Ezra 4
1 And adversaries of Judah and Benjamin hear that the sons of the captivity are building a temple to Jehovah, God of Israel,
Et les ennemis de Juda et de Benjamin entendirent que les fils de la transportation bâtissaient le temple de l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël;
2 and they draw nigh unto Zerubbabel, and unto heads of the fathers, and say to them, 'Let us build with you; for, like you, we seek to your God, and we are not sacrificing since the days of Esar-Haddon king of Asshur, who brought us up hither.'
et ils s’approchèrent de Zorobabel et des chefs des pères, et leur dirent: Nous bâtirons avec vous, car nous recherchons votre Dieu, comme vous, et nous lui offrons des sacrifices depuis les jours d’Ésar-Haddon, roi d’Assyrie, qui nous a fait monter ici.
3 And Zerubbabel saith to them, also Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, 'Not for you, and for us, to build a house to our God; but we ourselves together do build to Jehovah God of Israel, as the king Cyrus, king of Persia, commanded us.'
Et Zorobabel, et Jéshua, et le reste des chefs des pères d’Israël, leur dirent: Vous n’avez pas affaire avec nous pour bâtir une maison à notre Dieu, mais nous seuls, nous bâtirons à l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, comme nous l’a commandé le roi Cyrus, roi de Perse.
4 And it cometh to pass, the people of the land are making the hands of the people of Judah feeble, and troubling them in building,
Alors le peuple du pays rendit lâches les mains du peuple de Juda; et ils leur firent peur de bâtir,
5 and are hiring against them counsellors to make void their counsel all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even till the reign of Darius king of Persia.
et ils soudoyèrent contre eux des conseillers pour faire échouer leur plan, durant tous les jours de Cyrus, roi de Perse, et jusqu’au règne de Darius, roi de Perse.
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the commencement of his reign, they have written an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem;
Et sous le règne d’Assuérus, au commencement de son règne, ils écrivirent une accusation contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem.
7 and in the days of Artaxerxes have Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions written unto Artaxerxes king of Persia, and the writing of the letter is written in Aramaean, and interpreted in Aramaean.
Et aux jours d’Artaxerxès, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeël et le reste de ses collègues, écrivirent à Artaxerxès, roi de Perse; et la lettre était écrite en écriture syriaque et traduite en syriaque:
8 Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe have written a letter concerning Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king, thus:
Rehum, chancelier, et Shimshaï, secrétaire, écrivirent une lettre contre Jérusalem au roi Artaxerxès, en ces termes.
9 Then Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions, Dinaites, and Apharsathchites, Tarpelites, Apharsites, Archevites, Babylonians, Susanchites, (who are Elamites),
Alors Rehum, chancelier, et Shimshaï, secrétaire, et le reste de leurs collègues, les Dinites, les Apharsathkites, les Tarpelites, les Apharsites, les Arkévites, les Babyloniens, les Susankites, les Déhaviens, les Élamites,
10 and the rest of the nations that the great and honourable Asnapper removed and set in the city of Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, and at such a time:
et le reste des peuplades que le grand et noble Osnappar transporta et fit habiter dans les villes de Samarie et dans le reste [du pays] de ce côté du fleuve, etc.
11 This [is] a copy of a letter that they have sent unto him, unto Artaxerxes the king: 'Thy servants, men beyond the river, and at such a time;
C’est ici la copie de la lettre qu’ils lui envoyèrent: Au roi Artaxerxès: Tes serviteurs, les hommes de ce côté du fleuve, etc.
12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who have come up from thee unto us, have come in to Jerusalem, the rebellious and base city they are building, and the walls they have finished, and the foundations they join.
Que le roi sache que les Juifs qui sont montés de chez toi vers nous [et] sont venus à Jérusalem, bâtissent la ville rebelle et méchante, et que les murailles s’achèvent, et qu’ils restaurent les fondements.
13 'Now, be it known to the king, that if this city be builded, and the walls finished, toll, tribute, and custom they do not give; and at length [to] the kings it doth cause loss.
Que le roi sache donc que si cette ville est bâtie et que ses murailles s’achèvent, ils ne paieront ni tribut, ni impôt, ni péage, et, plus tard, cela portera préjudice aux rois.
14 Now, because that the salt of the palace [is] our salt, and the nakedness of the king we have no patience to see, therefore we have sent and made known to the king;
Or comme nous mangeons le sel du palais, et qu’il n’était pas convenable pour nous de voir qu’on faisait tort au roi, à cause de cela nous avons envoyé et nous avons informé le roi,
15 so that he doth seek in the book of the records of thy fathers, and thou dost find in the book of the records, and dost know, that this city [is] a rebellious city, and causing loss [to] kings and provinces, and makers of sedition [are] in its midst from the days of old, therefore hath this city been wasted.
afin qu’on cherche dans le livre des annales de tes pères: et tu trouveras dans le livre des annales et tu sauras que cette ville est une ville rebelle, et qu’elle a porté préjudice aux rois et aux provinces, et que, dès les jours anciens, on y a fait des séditions; c’est pourquoi cette ville a été détruite.
16 We are making known to the king that, if this city be builded and the walls finished, by this means a portion beyond the river thou hast none.'
Nous faisons savoir au roi que si cette ville est rebâtie et que ses murailles s’achèvent, à cause de cela, tu n’auras plus de possession de ce côté du fleuve.
17 An answer hath the king sent unto Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions who are dwelling in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, 'Peace, and at such a time:
Le roi envoya un rescrit à Rehum, chancelier, et à Shimshaï, secrétaire, et au reste de leurs collègues qui habitaient à Samarie, et dans le reste [du pays] de l’autre côté du fleuve: Paix, etc.
18 The letter that ye sent unto us, explained, hath been read before me,
La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue exactement devant moi.
19 and by me a decree hath been made, and they sought, and have found that this city from the days of old against kings is lifting up itself, and rebellion and sedition is made in it,
Et de par moi un ordre a été donné, et on a cherché, et on a trouvé que, dès les jours anciens, cette ville s’est soulevée contre les rois, et qu’il s’y est fait des révoltes et des séditions,
20 and mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, even rulers over all beyond the river, and toll, tribute, and custom is given to them.
et qu’il y a eu sur Jérusalem de puissants rois qui ont régné sur tout ce qui est de l’autre côté du fleuve, et que le tribut, l’impôt, et le péage leur ont été payés.
21 'Now, make ye a decree to cause these men to cease, and this city is not builded, till by me a decree is made.
Ainsi, donnez ordre de faire cesser ces hommes, et que cette ville ne soit pas bâtie, jusqu’à ce que l’ordre en soit donné de par moi.
22 And beware ye of negligence in doing this; why doth the hurt become great to the loss of the kings?'
Gardez-vous de manquer à faire cela: pourquoi le dommage augmenterait-il au préjudice des rois?
23 Then from the time that a copy of the letter of king Artaxerxes is read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they have gone in haste to Jerusalem, unto the Jews, and caused them to cease by force and strength;
Alors, aussitôt que la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxès eut été lue devant Rehum et Shimshaï, le secrétaire, et leurs collègues, ils allèrent en hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et les firent cesser par force et par puissance.
24 then ceased the service of the house of God that [is] in Jerusalem, and it ceased till the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Alors le travail de la maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem cessa; et il fut arrêté jusqu’à la seconde année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.
