Exodus 1
1 And these [are] the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;
Questi sono i nomi dei figli d'Israele entrati in Egitto con Giacobbe e arrivati ognuno con la sua famiglia:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
Ruben, Simeone, Levi e Giuda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
Issacar, Zàbulon e Beniamino,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Dan e Nèftali, Gad e Aser.
5 And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.
Tutte le persone nate da Giacobbe erano settanta, Giuseppe si trovava gia in Egitto.
6 And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;
Giuseppe poi morì e così tutti i suoi fratelli e tutta quella generazione.
7 and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.
I figli d'Israele prolificarono e crebbero, divennero numerosi e molto potenti e il paese ne fu ripieno.
8 And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,
Allora sorse sull'Egitto un nuovo re, che non aveva conosciuto Giuseppe.
9 and he saith unto his people, 'Lo, the people of the sons of Israel [is] more numerous and mighty than we;
E disse al suo popolo: «Ecco che il popolo dei figli d'Israele è più numeroso e più forte di noi.
10 give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'
Prendiamo provvedimenti nei suoi riguardi per impedire che aumenti, altrimenti, in caso di guerra, si unirà ai nostri avversari, combatterà contro di noi e poi partirà dal paese».
11 And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;
Allora vennero imposti loro dei sovrintendenti ai lavori forzati per opprimerli con i loro gravami, e così costruirono per il faraone le città-deposito, cioè Pitom e Ramses.
12 and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;
Ma quanto più opprimevano il popolo, tanto più si moltiplicava e cresceva oltre misura; si cominciò a sentire come un incubo la presenza dei figli d'Israele.
13 and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,
Per questo gli Egiziani fecero lavorare i figli d'Israele trattandoli duramente.
14 and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every [kind] of service in the field; all their service in which they have served [is] with rigour.
Resero loro amara la vita costringendoli a fabbricare mattoni di argilla e con ogni sorta di lavoro nei campi: e a tutti questi lavori li obbligarono con durezza.
15 And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one [is] Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),
Poi il re d'Egitto disse alle levatrici degli Ebrei, delle quali una si chiamava Sifra e l'altra Pua:
16 and saith, 'When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it [is] a son — then ye have put him to death; and if it [is] a daughter — then she hath lived.'
«Quando assistete al parto delle donne ebree, osservate quando il neonato è ancora tra le due sponde del sedile per il parto: se è un maschio, lo farete morire; se è una femmina, potrà vivere».
17 And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;
Ma le levatrici temettero Dio: non fecero come aveva loro ordinato il re d'Egitto e lasciarono vivere i bambini.
18 and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, 'Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'
Il re d'Egitto chiamò le levatrici e disse loro: «Perché avete fatto questo e avete lasciato vivere i bambini?».
19 And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, 'Because the Hebrew women [are] not as the Egyptian women, for they [are] lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them — they have borne!'
Le levatrici risposero al faraone: «Le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane: sono piene di vitalità: prima che arrivi presso di loro la levatrice, hanno gia partorito!».
20 And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;
Dio beneficò le levatrici. Il popolo aumentò e divenne molto forte.
21 and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;
E poiché le levatrici avevano temuto Dio, egli diede loro una numerosa famiglia.
22 and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, 'Every son who is born — into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'
Allora il faraone diede quest'ordine a tutto il suo popolo: «Ogni figlio maschio che nascerà agli Ebrei, lo getterete nel Nilo, ma lascerete vivere ogni figlia».
