Exodus 32
1 And the people see that Moses is delaying to come down from the mount, and the people assemble against Aaron, and say unto him, 'Rise, make for us gods who go before us, for this Moses — the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt — we have not known what hath happened to him.'
Le peuple, voyant que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne, s’assembla autour d’Aaron et lui dit: « Allons, fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous. Car pour ce Moïse, l’homme qui nous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il en est devenu. »
2 And Aaron saith unto them, 'Break off the rings of gold which [are] in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring in unto me;'
Aaron leur dit: « Otez les anneaux d’or qui sont aux oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi. »
3 and all the people themselves break off the rings of gold which [are] in their ears, and bring in unto Aaron,
Tout le monde ôta les anneaux d’or qu’ils avaient aux oreilles, et ils les apportèrent à Aaron.
4 and he receiveth from their hand, and doth fashion it with a graving tool, and doth make it a molten calf, and they say, 'These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'
Il les reçut de leurs mains, façonna l’or au burin, et en fit un veau en fonte. Et ils dirent: « Israël, voici ton Dieu, qui t’a fait monter du pays d’Égypte. »
5 And Aaron seeth, and buildeth an altar before it, and Aaron calleth, and saith, 'A festival to Jehovah — to-morrow;'
Ayant vu cela, Aaron construisit un autel devant l’image, et il s’écria: « Demain il y aura fête en l’honneur de Yahweh. »
6 and they rise early on the morrow, and cause burnt-offerings to ascend, and bring nigh peace-offerings; and the people sit down to eat and to drink, and rise up to play.
Le lendemain, s’étant levés de bon matin, ils offrirent des holocaustes et présentèrent des sacrifices pacifiques; et le peuple s’assit pour manger et pour boire, puis ils se levèrent pour se divertir.
7 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Go, descend, for thy people whom thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt hath done corruptly,
Yahweh dit à Moïse: « Va, descends; car ton peuple que tu as fait monter du pays d’Égypte, s’est conduit très mal.
8 they have turned aside hastily from the way that I have commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten calf, and bow themselves to it, and sacrifice to it, and say, These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'
Ils se sont bien vite détournés de la voie que je leur avais prescrite; ils se sont fait un veau en fonte, ils se sont prosternés devant lui, et ils lui ont offert des sacrifices, et ils ont dit: Israël, voici ton Dieu, qui t’a fait monter du pays d’Égypte. »
9 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'I have seen this people, and lo, it [is] a stiff-necked people;
Yahweh dit à Moïse: « Je vois que ce peuple est un peuple au cou raide.
10 and now, let Me alone, and My anger doth burn against them, and I consume them, and I make thee become a great nation.'
Maintenant laisse-moi: que ma colère s’embrase contre eux et que je les consume! Mais je ferai de toi une grande nation. »
11 And Moses appeaseth the face of Jehovah his God, and saith, 'Why, O Jehovah, doth Thine anger burn against Thy people, whom Thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?
Moïse implora Yahweh, son Dieu, et dit: « Pourquoi, Yahweh, votre colère s’embraserait-elle contre votre peuple, que vous avez fait sortir du pays d’Égypte par une grande puissance et par une main forte?
12 why do the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil He brought them out to slay them among mountains, and to consume them from off the face of the ground? turn back from the heat of Thine anger, and repent of the evil against Thy people.
Pourquoi les Égyptiens diraient-ils: C’est pour leur malheur qu’il les a fait sortir, c’est pour les faire périr dans les montagnes et pour les anéantir de dessus la terre? Revenez de l’ardeur de votre colère, et repentez-vous du mal que vous voulez faire à votre peuple.
13 'Be mindful of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, Thy servants, to whom Thou hast sworn by Thyself, and unto whom Thou speakest: I multiply your seed as stars of the heavens, and all this land, as I have said, I give to your seed, and they have inherited to the age;'
Souvenez-vous d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, vos serviteurs, auxquels vous avez dit, en jurant par vous-même: Je multiplierai votre postérité comme les étoiles du ciel, et tout ce pays dont j’ai parlé, je le donnerai à vos descendants, et ils le posséderont à jamais. »
14 and Jehovah repenteth of the evil which He hath spoken of doing to His people.
Et Yahweh se repentit du mal qu’il avait parlé de faire à son peuple.
15 And Moses turneth, and goeth down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony [are] in his hand, tables written on both their sides, on this and on that [are] they written;
Moïse revint et descendit de la montagne, ayant dans sa main les deux tables du témoignage, tables écrites sur leurs deux côtés; elles étaient écrites sur l’une et l’autre face.
16 and the tables are the work of God, and the writing is the writing of God, graven on the tables.
Les tables étaient l’ouvrage de Dieu, et l’écriture était l’écriture de Dieu, gravée sur les tables.
17 And Joshua heareth the voice of the people in their shouting, and saith unto Moses, 'A noise of battle in the camp!'
Josué entendit le bruit que faisait le peuple en poussant des cris, et il dit à Moïse: Il y a un cri de bataille dans le camp! »
18 and he saith, 'It is not the voice of the crying of might, nor is it the voice of the crying of weakness — a voice of singing I am hearing.'
Moïse répondit: « Ce n’est ni un bruit de cris de victoire, ni un bruit de cris de défaite; j’entends la voix de gens qui chantent. »
19 And it cometh to pass, when he hath drawn near unto the camp, that he seeth the calf, and the dancing, and the anger of Moses burneth, and he casteth out of his hands the tables, and breaketh them under the mount;
Lorsqu’il fut près du camp, il vit le veau et les danses. Et la colère de Moïse s’enflamma; il jeta de ses mains les tables et les brisa au pied de la Montagne.
20 and he taketh the calf which they have made, and burneth [it] with fire, and grindeth until [it is] small, and scattereth on the face of the waters, and causeth the sons of Israel to drink.
Et, prenant le veau qu’ils avaient fait, il le brûla au feu, le broya jusqu’à le réduire en poudre, répandit cette poudre sur l’eau, et en fit boire aux enfants d’Israël.
21 And Moses saith unto Aaron, 'What hath this people done to thee, that thou hast brought in upon it a great sin?'
Moïse dit à Aaron: « Que t’a fait ce peuple pour que tu aies amené sur lui un si grand péché? »
22 and Aaron saith, 'Let not the anger of my lord burn; thou — thou hast known the people that it [is] in evil;
Aaron répondit: « Que la colère de mon seigneur ne s’enflamme pas! Tu sais toi-même que ce peuple est porté au mal.
23 and they say to me, Make for us gods, who go before us, for this Moses — the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt — we have not known what hath happened to him;
Ils m’ont dit: Fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous; car pour ce Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il en est devenu.
24 and I say to them, Whoso hath gold, let them break [it] off, and they give to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf cometh out.'
Je leur ai dit: Que ceux qui ont de l’or s’en dépouillent! Ils m’en ont donné, je l’ai jeté au feu, et il en est sorti ce veau. »
25 And Moses seeth the people that it [is] unbridled, for Aaron hath made it unbridled for contempt among its withstanders,
Moïse vit que le peuple n’avait plus de frein, parce qu’Aaron lui avait ôté tout frein, l’exposant à devenir une risée parmi ses ennemis.
26 and Moses standeth in the gate of the camp, and saith, 'Who [is] for Jehovah? — unto me!' and all the sons of Levi are gathered unto him;
Et Moïse se plaça à la porte du camp, et il dit: « A moi ceux qui sont pour Yahweh! » Et tous les enfants de Lévi se rassemblèrent auprès de lui.
27 and he saith to them, 'Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, Put each his sword by his thigh, pass over and turn back from gate to gate through the camp, and slay each his brother, and each his friend, and each his relation.'
Il leur dit: « Ainsi parle Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël: Que chacun de vous mette son épée à son côté; passez et repassez dans le camp d’une porte à l’autre, et que chacun tue son frère, chacun son ami, chacun son parent! »
28 And the sons of Levi do according to the word of Moses, and there fall of the people on that day about three thousand men,
Les enfants de Lévi firent ce qu’ordonnait Moïse, et il périt ce jour-là environ trois mille hommes du peuple.
29 and Moses saith, 'Consecrate your hand to-day to Jehovah, for a man [is] against his son, and against his brother, so as to bring on you to-day a blessing.'
Moïse dit: « Consacrez-vous aujourd’hui à Yahweh, puisque chacun de vous a été contre son fils et son père, afin qu’il vous donne aujourd’hui une bénédiction. »
30 And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Moses saith unto the people, 'Ye — ye have sinned a great sin, and now I go up unto Jehovah, if so be I atone for your sin.'
Le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple: « Vous avez commis un grand péché. Et maintenant je vais monter vers Yahweh: peut-être obtiendrai-je le pardon de votre péché. »
31 And Moses turneth back unto Jehovah, and saith, 'Oh this people hath sinned a great sin, that they make to themselves a god of gold;
Moïse retourna vers Yahweh et dit: « Ah! ce peuple a commis un grand péché! Ils se sont fait un dieu d’or.
32 and now, if Thou takest away their sin — and if not — blot me, I pray thee, out of Thy book which Thou hast written.'
Pardonnez maintenant leur péché; sinon effacez-moi de votre livre que vous avez écrit. »
33 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Whoso hath sinned against Me — I blot him out of My book;
Yahweh dit à Moïse: « C’est celui qui a péché contre moi que j’effacerai de mon livre.
34 and now, go, lead the people whithersoever I have spoken to thee of; lo, My messenger goeth before thee, and in the day of my charging — then I have charged upon them their sin.'
Va maintenant, conduis le peuple où je t’ai dit. Voici, mon ange marchera devant toi, mais, au jour de ma visite, je les punirai de leur péché. »
35 And Jehovah plagueth the people, because they made the calf which Aaron made.
C’est ainsi que Yahweh frappa le peuple, parce qu’ils avaient fait le veau qu’Aaron avait fait.
