Exodus 22
1 'When a man doth steal an ox or sheep, and hath slaughtered it or sold it, five of the herd he doth repay for the ox, and four of the flock for the sheep.
Quando un uomo ruba un bue o un montone e poi lo scanna o lo vende, darà come indennizzo cinque capi di grosso bestiame per il bue e quattro capi di bestiame per il montone.
2 'If in the breaking through, the thief is found, and he hath been smitten, and hath died, there is no blood for him;
Se un ladro viene sorpreso mentre sta facendo una breccia in un muro e viene colpito e muore, non vi è vendetta di sangue.
3 if the sun hath risen upon him, blood [is] for him, he doth certainly repay; if he have nothing, then he hath been sold for his theft;
Ma se il sole si era gia alzato su di lui, a suo riguardo vi è vendetta di sangue. Il ladro dovrà dare l'indennizzo: se non avrà di che pagare, sarà venduto in compenso dell'oggetto rubato.
4 if the theft is certainly found in his hand alive, whether ox, or ass, or sheep — double he repayeth.
Se si trova ancora in vita e in suo possesso ciò che è stato rubato, si tratti di bue, di asino o di montone, restituirà il doppio.
5 'When a man depastureth a field or vineyard, and hath sent out his beast, and it hath pastured in the field of another, [of] the best of his field, and the best of his vineyard, he doth repay.
Quando un uomo usa come pascolo un campo o una vigna e lascia che il suo bestiame vada a pascolare nel campo altrui, deve dare l'indennizzo con il meglio del suo campo e con il meglio della sua vigna.
6 'When fire goeth forth, and hath found thorns, and a stack, or the standing corn, or the field, hath been consumed, he who causeth the burning doth certainly repay.
Quando un fuoco si propaga e si attacca ai cespugli spinosi, se viene bruciato un mucchio di covoni o il grano in spiga o il grano in erba, colui che ha provocato l'incendio darà l'indennizzo.
7 'When a man doth give unto his neighbour silver, or vessels to keep, and it hath been stolen out of the man's house; if the thief is found, he repayeth double.
Quando un uomo dà in custodia al suo prossimo argento od oggetti e poi nella casa di questo uomo viene commesso un furto, se si trova il ladro, restituirà il doppio.
8 'If the thief is not found, then the master of the house hath been brought near unto God, whether he hath not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbour;
Se il ladro non si trova, il padrone della casa si accosterà a Dio per giurare che non ha allungato la mano sulla proprietà del suo prossimo.
9 for every matter of transgression, for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, for any lost thing of which it is said that it is his; unto God cometh the matter of them both; he whom God doth condemn, he repayeth double to his neighbour.
Qualunque sia l'oggetto di una frode, si tratti di un bue, di un asino, di un montone, di una veste, di qualunque oggetto perduto, di cui uno dice: «E' questo!», la causa delle due parti andrà fino a Dio: colui che Dio dichiarerà colpevole restituirà il doppio al suo prossimo.
10 'When a man doth give unto his neighbour an ass, or ox, or sheep, or any beast to keep, and it hath died, or hath been hurt, or taken captive, none seeing —
Quando un uomo dà in custodia al suo prossimo un asino o un bue o un capo di bestiame minuto o qualsiasi bestia, se la bestia è morta o si è prodotta una frattura o è stata rapita senza testimone,
11 an oath of Jehovah is between them both, that he hath not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbour, and its owner hath accepted, and he doth not repay;
tra le due parti interverrà un giuramento per il Signore, per dichiarare che il depositario non ha allungato la mano sulla proprietà del suo prossimo. Il padrone della bestia accetterà e l'altro non dovrà restituire.
12 but if it is certainly stolen from him, he doth repay to its owner;
Ma se la bestia è stata rubata quando si trovava presso di lui, pagherà l'indennizzo al padrone di essa.
13 if it is certainly torn, he bringeth it in — a witness; the torn thing he doth not repay.
Se invece è stata sbranata, la porterà in testimonianza e non dovrà dare l'indennizzo per la bestia sbranata.
14 'And when a man doth ask [anything] from his neighbour, and it hath been hurt or hath died — its owner not being with it — he doth certainly repay;
Quando un uomo prende in prestito dal suo prossimo una bestia e questa si è prodotta una frattura o è morta in assenza del padrone, dovrà pagare l'indennizzo.
15 if its owner [is] with it, he doth not repay, — if it [is] a hired thing, it hath come for its hire.
Ma se il padrone si trova presente, non deve restituire; se si tratta di una bestia presa a nolo, la sua perdita è compensata dal prezzo del noleggio.
16 'And when a man doth entice a virgin who [is] not betrothed, and hath lain with her, he doth certainly endow her to himself for a wife;
Quando un uomo seduce una vergine non ancora fidanzata e pecca con lei, ne pagherà la dote nuziale ed essa diverrà sua moglie.
17 if her father utterly refuse to give her to him, money he doth weigh out according to the dowry of virgins.
Se il padre di lei si rifiuta di dargliela, egli dovrà versare una somma di denaro pari alla dote nuziale delle vergini.
18 'A witch thou dost not keep alive.
Non lascerai vivere colei che pratica la magìa.
19 'Whoever lieth with a beast is certainly put to death.
Chiunque si abbrutisce con una bestia sia messo a morte.
20 'He who is sacrificing to a god, save to Jehovah alone, is devoted.
Colui che offre un sacrificio agli dei, oltre al solo Signore, sarà votato allo sterminio.
21 'And a sojourner thou dost not oppress, nor crush him, for sojourners ye have been in the land of Egypt.
Non molesterai il forestiero né lo opprimerai, perché voi siete stati forestieri nel paese d'Egitto.
22 'Any widow or orphan ye do not afflict;
Non maltratterai la vedova o l'orfano.
23 if thou dost really afflict him, surely if he at all cry unto Me, I certainly hear his cry;
Se tu lo maltratti, quando invocherà da me l'aiuto, io ascolterò il suo grido,
24 and Mine anger hath burned, and I have slain you by the sword, and your wives have been widows, and your sons orphans.
la mia collera si accenderà e vi farò morire di spada: le vostre mogli saranno vedove e i vostri figli orfani.
25 'If thou dost lend My poor people with thee money, thou art not to him as a usurer; thou dost not lay on him usury;
Se tu presti denaro a qualcuno del mio popolo, all'indigente che sta con te, non ti comporterai con lui da usuraio: voi non dovete imporgli alcun interesse.
26 if thou dost at all take in pledge the garment of thy neighbour, during the going in of the sun thou dost return it to him:
Se prendi in pegno il mantello del tuo prossimo, glielo renderai al tramonto del sole,
27 for it alone is his covering, it [is] his garment for his skin; wherein doth he lie down? and it hath come to pass, when he doth cry unto Me, that I have heard, for I [am] gracious.
perché è la sua sola coperta, è il mantello per la sua pelle; come potrebbe coprirsi dormendo? Altrimenti, quando invocherà da me l'aiuto, io ascolterò il suo grido, perché io sono pietoso.
28 'God thou dost not revile, and a prince among thy people thou dost not curse.
Non bestemmierai Dio e non maledirai il principe del tuo popolo.
29 'Thy fulness and thy liquids thou dost not delay; the first-born of thy sons thou dost give to Me;
Non ritarderai l'offerta di ciò che riempie il tuo granaio e di ciò che stilla dal tuo frantoio. Il primogenito dei tuoi figli lo darai a me.
30 so thou dost to thine ox, to thy sheep; seven days it is with its dam, on the eighth day thou dost give it to Me.
Così farai per il tuo bue e per il tuo bestiame minuto: sette giorni resterà con sua madre, l'ottavo giorno me lo darai.
31 'And ye are holy men to Me, and flesh torn in the field ye do not eat, to a dog ye do cast it.
Voi sarete per me uomini santi: non mangerete la carne di una bestia sbranata nella campagna, la getterete ai cani.
