Deuteronomy 29
1 These [are] the words of the covenant which Jehovah hath commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, apart from the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.
Voilà les conditions de l'alliance que le Seigneur prescrivit à Moïse de faire avec les fils d'Israël, en la terre de Moab, outre l'alliance qu'il avait précédemment faite avec eux en Horeb.
2 And Moses calleth unto all Israel, and saith unto them, 'Ye — ye have seen all that which Jehovah hath done before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land;
Et Moïse convoqua tous les fils d'Israël, et il leur dit: Vous avez vu tout ce que devant vous, en la terre d'Egypte, le Seigneur a fait au Pharaon, à ses serviteurs, et à toute la contrée;
3 the great trials which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders;
Vos yeux ont été frappés de ces grandes épreuves, de ces signes et de ces prodiges.
4 and Jehovah hath not given to you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, till this day,
Et jusqu'à ce jour le Seigneur ne vous a pas donné un cœur pour comprendre, des yeux pour voir, des oreilles pour écouter.
5 and I cause you to go forty years in a wilderness; your garments have not been consumed from off you, and thy shoe hath not worn away from off thy foot;
Il vous a fait errer pendant quarante ans dans le désert, et vos vêtements n'ont pas vieilli, vos sandales sous vos pieds ne se sont pas usées.
6 bread ye have not eaten, and wine and strong drink ye have not drunk, so that ye know that I [am] Jehovah your God.
Vous n'avez pas mangé de pain, vous n'avez bu ni vin ni liqueur fermentée, afin, a dit le Seigneur, que vous sachiez que je suis le Seigneur votre Dieu.
7 'And ye come in unto this place, and Sihon king of Heshbon — also Og king of Bashan — doth come out to meet us, to battle, and we smite them,
Vous êtes ainsi venus jusqu'au lieu où vous êtes, et Séhon, roi d'Esebon, et Og, roi de Basan, sont sortis à notre rencontre pour nous combattre, et nous les avons vaincus.
8 and take their land, and give it for an inheritance to the Reubenite, and to the Gadite, and to the half of the tribe of Manasseh;
Nous avons pris leur terre: je l'ai donnée en héritage à Ruben, à Gad, et à une demi-tribu de Manassé.
9 and ye have kept the words of this covenant, and done them, so that ye cause all that ye do to prosper.
Veillez à vous conformer à toutes les paroles de l'alliance, afin que vous fassiez toutes choses avec intelligence.
10 'Ye are standing to-day, all of you, before Jehovah your God — your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your authorities — every man of Israel;
Or, vous voici tous aujourd'hui devant le Seigneur votre Dieu: chefs et tribus, anciens, juges, scribes, peuple,
11 your infants, your wives, and thy sojourner who [is] in the midst of thy camps, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water —
Femmes, enfants, étrangers établis dans le camp, depuis le fendeur de bois jusqu'au porteur d'eau,
12 for thy passing over into the covenant of Jehovah thy God, and into His oath which Jehovah thy God is making with thee to-day;
Pour entrer dans l'alliance du Seigneur votre Dieu et pour entendre ses malédictions, comme le Seigneur les règle aujourd'hui devant vous
13 in order to establish thee to-day to Him for a people, and He Himself is thy God, as He hath spoken to thee, and as He hath sworn to thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
An moment de vous instituer son peuple; lui-même sera ton Dieu, comme il l'a dit et juré à tes pères Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
14 'And not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath;
Et ce n'est pas pour vous seuls que j'établis cette alliance et ces malédictions.
15 but with him who is here with us, standing to-day before Jehovah our God, and with him who is not here with us to-day,
C'est aussi bien pour ceux qui ne sont pas ici aujourd'hui avec vous, que pour ceux qui sont ici aujourd'hui avec vous devant le Seigneur.
16 for ye have known how ye dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we passed by through the midst of the nations which ye have passed by;
Car vous savez comment nous avons demeuré en la terre d'Egypte, et comment nous avons passé au milieu des nations que vous avez rencontrées.
17 and ye see their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which [are] with them,
Vous avez vu leurs abominations, et les idoles de bois ou de pierre, d'argent ou d'or, qui existent chez elles.
18 lest there be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart is turning to-day from Jehovah our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations, lest there be in you a root fruitful of gall and wormwood:
Et il n'y a parmi vous ni homme, ni femme, ni famille, ni tribu, dont la pensée se soit écartée du Seigneur votre Dieu, et qui ait servi les dieux des nations; il n'y a point parmi vous de racine nourrie de fiel et d'amertume.
19 'And it hath been, in his hearing the words of this oath, and he hath blessed himself in his heart, saying, I have peace, though in the stubbornness of my heart I go on, in order to end the fulness with the thirst.
Or, après avoir ouï les termes de cette malédiction, s'il arrive que quelqu'un s'encourage en son cœur, et dise: Que les menaces du Seigneur s'accomplissent sur moi, car je veux marcher dans l'égarement de mon âme; crains alors que le pécheur ne perde avec lui l'innocent.
20 Jehovah is not willing to be propitious to him, for then doth the anger of Jehovah smoke, also His zeal, against that man, and lain down on him hath all the oath which is written in this book, and Jehovah hath blotted out his name from under the heavens,
Dieu ne sera plus propice à cet homme; la jalousie, la colère du Seigneur s'enflammeront soudain contre lui; toutes les malédictions de l'alliance, écrites en ce livre, l'assailliront, et son nom sera effacé sous le ciel.
21 and Jehovah hath separated him for evil, out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the oaths of the covenant which is written in this book of the law.
Et le Seigneur le séparera des fils d'Israël par ses fléaux, conformément aux malédictions de l'alliance écrites en ce livre de la loi.
22 'And the latter generation of your sons who rise after you, and the stranger who cometh in from a land afar off, have said when they have seen the strokes of that land, and its sicknesses which Jehovah hath sent into it, —
Lorsqu'une autre génération, lorsque vos fils qui naîtront après vous, et l'étranger qui de loin viendra sur cette terre, verront ces plaies et les fléaux que le Seigneur fera tomber sur elle;
23 ([with] brimstone and salt is the whole land burnt, it is not sown, nor doth it shoot up, nor doth there go up on it any herb, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which Jehovah overturned in His anger, and in His fury, ) —
Lorsqu'ils verront le soufre et le sel fulminant, et ces champs qui ne seront point ensemencés, qui ne produiront rien, où nulle plante ne poussera, qui seront bouleversés comme Sodome, Gomorrhe et Adama-Siboïm, qu'en sa colère le Seigneur a détruites;
24 yea, all the nations have said, Wherefore hath Jehovah done thus to this land? what the heat of this great anger?
Ils diront et les Gentils diront pareillement: Pourquoi le Seigneur traite-t-il ainsi cette terre? Que veut dire ce grand courroux?
25 'And they have said, Because that they have forsaken the covenant of Jehovah, God of their fathers, which He made with them in His bringing them out of the land of Egypt,
Et on répondra: C'est parce qu'ils ont abandonné l'alliance du Seigneur Dieu de leurs pères, l'alliance que Dieu avait faite avec leurs pères, après les avoir tirés de la terre d'Egypte,
26 and they go and serve other gods, and bow themselves to them — gods which they have not known, and which He hath not apportioned to them;
Et parce que, s'en étant éloignés, ils ont servi d'autres dieux qu'ils n'avaient point connus, au culte desquels il ne les avait point destinés.
27 and the anger of Jehovah burneth against that land, to bring in on it all the reviling that is written in this book,
Voilà pourquoi le Seigneur s'est enflammé de courroux contre cette terre, au point de faire tomber sur elle toutes les malédictions écrites au livre de sa loi.
28 and Jehovah doth pluck them from off their ground in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath, and doth cast them unto another land, as [at] this day.
Et dans les transports de sa colère le Seigneur les a enlevés de cette contrée qui leur appartenait, et il les a chassés, comme vous voyez, sur une terre lointaine.
29 'The things hidden [are] to Jehovah our God, and the things revealed [are] to us and to our sons — to the age, to do all the words of this law.
Les choses secrètes sont au Seigneur notre Dieu; les choses révélées sont pour vous et vos enfants à toujours, afin que vous accomplissiez toutes les paroles de cette loi.
