Deuteronomy 25

1 'When there is a strife between men, and they have come nigh unto the judgment, and they have judged, and declared righteous the righteous, and declared wrong the wrong-doer,

»Wenn es zwischen Männern zu einem Rechtsstreit kommt und sie vor Gericht getreten sind und man das Urteil über sie gesprochen hat, indem man den Unschuldigen freigesprochen und den Schuldigen verurteilt hat,

2 then it hath come to pass, if the wrong-doer is to be smitten, that the judge hath caused him to fall down, and [one] hath smitten him in his presence, according to the sufficiency of his wrong-doing, by number;

so soll, wenn der Schuldige Prügelstrafe verdient hat, der Richter ihn sich hinlegen lassen, und man soll ihm in seiner Gegenwart eine bestimmte Anzahl von Schlägen nach Maßgabe seiner Verschuldung geben.

3 forty [times] he doth smite him — he is not adding, lest, he is adding to smite him above these — many stripes, and thy brother is lightly esteemed in thine eyes.

Vierzig Schläge darf er ihm geben lassen, aber nicht mehr, damit dein Volksgenosse nicht, wenn man fortführe, ihm eine noch größere Zahl von Schlägen zu versetzen, in deinen Augen verächtlich gemacht wird. –

4 'Thou dost not muzzle an ox in its threshing.

Du sollst einem Ochsen, während er drischt, das Maul nicht verbinden.«

5 'When brethren dwell together, and one of them hath died, and hath no son, the wife of the dead is not without to a strange man; her husband's brother doth go in unto her, and hath taken her to him for a wife, and doth perform the duty of her husband's brother;

»Wenn Brüder beisammen wohnen und einer von ihnen stirbt, ohne einen Sohn zu hinterlassen, so soll sich die Ehefrau des Verstorbenen nicht nach auswärts an einen fremden Mann verheiraten, sondern ihr Schwager soll zu ihr eingehen und sie zu seiner Frau nehmen und die Schwagerehe mit ihr vollziehen;

6 and it hath been, the first-born which she beareth doth rise for the name of his dead brother, and his name is not wiped away out of Israel.

der erste Sohn aber, den sie dann gebiert, soll auf den Namen seines verstorbenen Bruders (in die Geschlechtsregister) eingetragen werden, damit dessen Name in Israel nicht ausstirbt.

7 'And if the man doth not delight to take his brother's wife, then hath his brother's wife gone up to the gate, unto the elders, and said, My husband's brother is refusing to raise up to his brother a name in Israel; he hath not been willing to perform the duty of my husband's brother;

Wenn aber der Mann sich nicht dazu verstehen will, seine Schwägerin zu heiraten, so soll seine Schwägerin ans Tor zu den Ältesten hingehen und sagen: ›Mein Schwager weigert sich, den Namen seines Bruders in Israel fortzupflanzen: er will die Schwagerehe nicht mit mir eingehen!‹

8 and the elders of his city have called for him, and spoken unto him, and he hath stood and said, I have no desire to take her;

Dann sollen die Ältesten der betreffenden Ortschaft ihn rufen lassen und ihm Vorstellungen machen; und wenn er trotzdem darauf besteht und erklärt: ›Ich bin nicht geneigt, sie zu heiraten!‹,

9 'Then hath his brother's wife drawn nigh unto him, before the eyes of the elders, and drawn his shoe from off his foot, and spat in his face, and answered and said, Thus it is done to the man who doth not build up the house of his brother;

so soll seine Schwägerin vor den Augen der Ältesten zu ihm hintreten, soll ihm den Schuh vom Fuß ziehen, ihm ins Angesicht speien und laut ausrufen: ›So soll es dem Mann ergehen, der das Haus seines Bruders nicht bauen will!‹

10 and his name hath been called in Israel — The house of him whose shoe is drawn off.

Mit einem Spottnamen soll dann sein Haus in Israel die ›Barfüßerfamilie‹ heißen.«

11 'When men strive together, one with another, and the wife of the one hath drawn near to deliver her husband out of the hand of his smiter, and hath put forth her hand, and laid hold on his secrets,

»Wenn zwei Männer, Volksgenossen, miteinander handgemein werden und die Frau des einen, die herbeigeeilt ist, um ihren Mann aus den Händen dessen, der ihn schlägt, zu retten, jenen mit ihrer Hand bei den Geschlechtsteilen faßt,

12 then thou hast cut off her hand, thine eye doth not spare.

so sollst du ihr die Hand abhauen, ohne einen Blick des Mitleids für sie zu haben! –

13 'Thou hast not in thy bag a stone and a stone, a great and a small.

Du sollst in deinem Beutel nicht zweierlei Gewichtsteine, einen größeren und einen kleineren, haben;

14 Thou hast not in thy house an ephah and an ephah, a great and a small.

du sollst in deinem Hause nicht zweierlei Hohlmaße, ein größeres und ein kleineres, haben:

15 Thou hast a stone complete and just, thou hast an ephah complete and just, so that they prolong thy days on the ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee;

volle und richtige Gewichte und volle und richtige Maße sollst du haben, damit du lange in dem Lande lebst, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir geben wird;

16 for the abomination of Jehovah thy God [is] any one doing these things, any one doing iniquity.

denn ein Greuel für den HERRN, deinen Gott, ist jeder, der solches tut, jeder, der Unredlichkeit übt.«

17 'Remember that which Amalek hath done to thee in the way, in your going out from Egypt,

»Denke daran, was die Amalekiter dir unterwegs bei eurem Auszug aus Ägypten angetan haben:

18 that he hath met thee in the way, and smiteth in all those feeble behind thee (and thou wearied and fatigued), and is not fearing God.

daß sie dich, während du müde und matt warst, auf der Wanderung ohne Furcht vor Gott überfallen und alle die niedergehauen haben, welche bei dir vor Ermattung zurückgeblieben waren.

19 And it hath been, in Jehovah thy God's giving rest to thee, from all thine enemies round about, in the land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee — an inheritance to possess it — thou dost blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens — thou dost not forget.

Wenn dir also der HERR, dein Gott, Ruhe vor allen deinen Feinden ringsum geschafft hat in dem Lande, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir als Erbgut zu seiner Besetzung geben wird, so sollst du das Andenken an die Amalekiter unter dem ganzen Himmel austilgen: vergiß es nicht!«
