Acts 17
1 And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was the synagogue of the Jews,
Paul et Silas passèrent par Amphipolis et par Apollonie; puis ils vinrent à Thessalonique, où les Juifs avaient une synagogue.
2 and according to the custom of Paul, he went in unto them, and for three sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings,
Selon sa coutume, Paul s'y rendit, et il discuta avec eux pendant trois sabbats,
3 opening and alleging, 'That the Christ it behoved to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that this is the Christ — Jesus whom I proclaim to you.'
expliquant et démontrant, par les Ecritures, qu'il fallait que le Christ souffrît, et qu'il ressuscitât des morts. Ce Christ, disait-il, c'est Jésus que je vous annonce.
4 And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few.
Quelques-uns d'entre eux furent persuadés; et ils se joignirent à Paul et à Silas, ainsi qu'une grande multitude de Grecs craignant Dieu, et à plusieurs femmes, des premières de la ville.
5 And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring [them] to the populace,
Mais les Juifs, pleins de jalousie, prirent avec eux quelques mauvais sujets des rues, et, ameutant la foule, ils jetèrent le trouble dans la ville. Ils assaillirent la maison de Jason, et ils y cherchèrent Paul et Silas pour les amener devant le peuple.
6 and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud — 'These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present,
Ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques-uns des frères devant les magistrats de la ville, en criant: Ces gens, qui ont bouleversé le monde, les voilà maintenant ici!
7 whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king — Jesus.'
Jason les a reçus chez lui. Or, ils sont tous rebelles aux édits de César, puisqu'ils disent qu'il y a un autre roi, Jésus.
8 And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,
Ces paroles émurent la foule et les magistrats.
9 and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
Ceux-ci, cependant, après avoir exigé une caution de Jason et des autres, les relâchèrent.
10 And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews;
Aussitôt, les frères firent partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés, ils entrèrent dans la synagogue des Juifs.
11 and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so;
Ceux-ci eurent des sentiments plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique, et ils accueillirent la Parole avec beaucoup d'empressement, examinant tous les jours les Écritures, pour vérifier ce qu'on leur disait.
12 many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few.
Plusieurs d'entre eux crurent, ainsi que des femmes grecques de haut rang, et des hommes en assez grand nombre.
13 And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes;
Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que Paul annonçait aussi la parole de Dieu à Bérée, ils y vinrent pour répandre l'agitation et le trouble parmi le peuple.
14 and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there.
Aussitôt, les frères firent partir Paul, dans la direction de la mer, tandis que Silas et Timothée restaient à Bérée.
15 And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed;
Ceux qui accompagnaient Paul le conduisirent jusqu'à Athènes; puis ils s'en retournèrent, apportant à Silas et à Timothée l'ordre de le rejoindre au plus tôt.
16 and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry,
Pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, il avait le coeur outré à la vue de cette ville toute pleine d'idoles.
17 therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshipping persons, and in the market-place every day with those who met with him.
Il discutait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et les prosélytes, et, chaque jour, sur la place publique, avec ceux qui s'y rencontraient.
18 And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, 'What would this seed picker wish to say?' and others, 'Of strange demons he doth seem to be an announcer;' because Jesus and the rising again he did proclaim to them as good news,
Quelques philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens conféraient aussi avec lui. Les uns disaient: Que veut dire ce discoureur? Et d'autres: Il semble annoncer des divinités étrangères. — car Paul leur annonçait Jésus et la résurrection. —
19 having also taken him, unto the Areopagus they brought [him], saying, 'Are we able to know what [is] this new teaching that is spoken by thee,
Ils le prirent avec eux et le menèrent à l'Aréopage, en lui disant: Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu enseignes?
20 for certain strange things thou dost bring to our ears? we wish, then, to know what these things would wish to be;'
Car tu nous fais entendre des choses étranges. Nous voudrions bien savoir ce que cela veut dire.
21 and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing.
Or, tous les Athéniens, aussi bien que les étrangers qui séjournaient à Athènes ne s'occupaient qu'à dire ou à écouter les nouvelles.
22 And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, 'Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious;
Alors Paul, se tenant au milieu de l'Aréopage, dit: Athéniens, je vois qu'à tous égards vous êtes, pour ainsi dire, dévots à l'excès.
23 for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I found also an erection on which had been inscribed: To God — unknown; whom, therefore — not knowing — ye do worship, this One I announce to you.
Car, en parcourant votre ville, et en considérant les objets de votre culte, j'ai trouvé un autel portant cette inscription: Au dieu inconnu. Eh bien, ce que vous honorez sans le connaître, c'est ce que je vous annonce!
24 'God, who did make the world, and all things in it, this One, of heaven and of earth being Lord, in temples made with hands doth not dwell,
Le Dieu qui a fait le monde, et tout ce qui s'y trouve, étant le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habite pas dans des temples bâtis par la main des hommes.
25 neither by the hands of men is He served — needing anything, He giving to all life, and breath, and all things;
Il n'est pas non plus servi par des mains humaines, comme s'il avait besoin de quoi que ce soit, lui qui donne à tous la vie, la respiration, tous les biens.
26 He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth — having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellings —
Il a fait naître d'un seul homme toutes les nations, et il les a fait habiter sur toute l'étendue de la terre, ayant fixé le temps précis de leur existence et les limites de leur demeure,
27 to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, — though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us,
afin qu'elles cherchent Dieu et s'efforcent de le trouver comme en tâtonnant, quoiqu'il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous.
28 for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring.
Car c'est en lui que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être, comme l'ont dit quelques-uns de vos poètes: «Nous sommes aussi de sa race!»
29 'Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man;
Étant donc de la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la divinité soit semblable à l'or, à l'argent ou à la pierre, sculptés par l'art et le génie de l'homme.
30 the times, indeed, therefore, of the ignorance God having overlooked, doth now command all men everywhere to reform,
C'est pourquoi, ne tenant pas compte de ces temps d'ignorance, Dieu invite maintenant tous les hommes, en tous lieux, à se repentir,
31 because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.'
parce qu'il a fixé un jour, où il doit juger le monde avec justice, par l'Homme qu'il a établi pour cela; et il en a donné à tous une preuve certaine en le ressuscitant des morts.
32 And having heard of a rising again of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, 'We will hear thee again concerning this;'
Quand ils entendirent parler de résurrection des morts, les uns se moquèrent, les autres dirent: Nous t'entendrons là-dessus une autre fois.
33 and so Paul went forth from the midst of them,
C'est ainsi que Paul se retira du milieu d'eux.
34 and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom [is] also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.
Il y eut cependant quelques personnes qui se joignirent à lui et qui crurent: de ce nombre étaient Denis, membre de l'Aréopage, une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres encore avec eux.
