Acts 14

1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they did enter together into the synagogue of the Jews, and spake, so that there believed both of Jews and Greeks a great multitude;

Il arriva qu'à Iconium, ils se rendirent ensemble à la synagogue, juive et y parlèrent de telle sorte que Juifs et Grecs devinrent croyants en grand nombre.

2 and the unbelieving Jews did stir up and made evil the souls of the nations against the brethren;

Mais les Juifs restés incrédules excitèrent et indisposèrent la population païenne contre les frères.

3 long time, indeed, therefore, did they abide speaking boldly in the Lord, who is testifying to the word of His grace, and granting signs and wonders to come to pass through their hands.

Ceux-ci prolongèrent alors leur séjour, pleins de courage et se confiant au Seigneur qui rendait témoignage à la prédication de sa grâce en leur donnant de faire des miracles et des prodiges.

4 And the multitude of the city was divided, and some were with the Jews, and some with the apostles,

Cependant la population de la ville se divisa, les uns furent pour les Juifs, les autres pour les apôtres;

5 and when there was a purpose both of the nations and of the Jews with their rulers to use [them] despitefully, and to stone them,

et comme les Juifs et les païens, d'accord avec les autorités, parlaient de les maltraiter et de les lapider,

6 they having become aware, did flee to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra, and Derbe, and to the region round about,

les apôtres, l'ayant appris, se réfugièrent dans les villes de Lycaonie, à Lystre, à Derbé et aux environs,

7 and there they were proclaiming good news.

et ils y annoncèrent l'Évangile.

8 And a certain man in Lystra, impotent in the feet, was sitting, being lame from the womb of his mother — who never had walked,

Or, il y avait à Lystre un homme paralysé des jambes, estropié de naissance; toujours assis, il n'avait jamais marché.

9 this one was hearing Paul speaking, who, having stedfastly beheld him, and having seen that he hath faith to be saved,

Cet homme écoutait Paul parler et lui, arrêtant sur lui son regard, vit qu'il avait la foi pour être guéri. Il lui dit alors à haute voix:

10 said with a loud voice, 'Stand up on thy feet upright;' and he was springing and walking,

«Lève-toi droit sur tes pieds; » il se leva d'un saut; il marchait!

11 and the multitudes having seen what Paul did, did lift up their voice, in the speech of Lycaonia, saying, 'The gods, having become like men, did come down unto us;'

Le peuple, voyant ce que Paul avait fait, se mit à pousser des acclamations, et à s'écrier en langue lycaonienne: «Les dieux sous forme humaine sont descendus vers nous»!

12 they were calling also Barnabas Zeus, and Paul Hermes, since he was the leader in speaking.

Barnabas fut appelé Zeus, et Paul Hermès, parce que c'était lui qui portait la parole.

13 And the priest of the Zeus that is before their city, oxen and garlands unto the porches having brought, with the multitudes did wish to sacrifice,

Le prêtre de Zeus, qui avait un temple à l'entrée de la ville, amena des taureaux et apporta des guirlandes devant les portes, et, d'accord avec le peuple, il allait offrir un sacrifice.

14 and having heard, the apostles Barnabas and Paul, having rent their garments, did spring into the multitude, crying

Mais les apôtres Barnabas et Paul, apprenant cela, déchirèrent leurs vêtements, et se jetèrent au milieu de la foule en s'écriant:

15 and saying, 'Men, why these things do ye? and we are men like-affected with you, proclaiming good news to you, from these vanities to turn unto the living God, who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all the things in them;

Lycaoniens «Pourquoi faites-vous cela? Nous sommes de même nature que vous, nous ne sommes que des hommes, nous vous prêchons l'Évangile qui vous dit de renoncer à ces idoles inutiles, de vous tourner vers le Dieu vivant, créateur du ciel, de la terre, de la mer,

16 who in the past generations did suffer all the nations to go on in their ways,

et de tout ce qu'ils renferment. Il a laissé, dans les siècles passés, toutes les nations païennes suivre leurs propres voies;

17 though, indeed, without witness He did not leave himself, doing good — from heaven giving rains to us, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness;'

et cependant il s'est fait connaître à vous par ses bienfaits; c'est lui qui vous donne la pluie du ciel, les saisons avec leurs fruits, la nourriture et toutes les joies du coeur dont vous êtes comblés.»

18 and these things saying, scarcely did they restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.

Malgré ces paroles, ce ne fut pas sans peine qu'ils empêchèrent le peuple de leur offrir un sacrifice.

19 And there came thither, from Antioch and Iconium, Jews, and they having persuaded the multitudes, and having stoned Paul, drew him outside of the city, having supposed him to be dead;

Cependant, survinrent d'Antioche et d'Iconium des Juifs qui gagnèrent le peuple et Paul fut lapidé, traîné hors de la ville et laissé pour mort.

20 and the disciples having surrounded him, having risen he entered into the city, and on the morrow he went forth with Barnabas to Derbe.

Quand les disciples vinrent l'entourer, il se releva et rentra dans la ville. Le lendemain, il partit avec Barnabas pour Derbé.

21 Having proclaimed good news also to that city, and having discipled many, they turned back to Lystra, and Iconium, and Antioch,

Ils y annoncèrent l'Évangile et y firent de nombreux disciples, puis retournèrent à Lystre, à Iconium et à Antioche,

22 confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting to remain in the faith, and that through many tribulations it behoveth us to enter into the reign of God,

affermissant l'esprit des disciples, les exhortant à persévérer dans la foi et leur apprenant que c'est par beaucoup de tribulations qu'on entre dans le Royaume de Dieu.

23 and having appointed to them by vote elders in every assembly, having prayed with fastings, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Ils firent nommer des Anciens dans chaque Église, puis ils les recommandèrent par des jeûnes et des prières au Seigneur en qui ils avaient cru.

24 And having passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia,

Ils traversèrent ensuite la Pisidie, vinrent en Pamphylie

25 and having spoken in Perga the word, they went down to Attalia,

et, après avoir annoncé la parole à Perge, ils descendirent à Attalie.

26 and thence did sail to Antioch, whence they had been given by the grace of God for the work that they fulfilled;

De là ils firent voile pour Antioche, où ils avaient été livrés à la grâce de Dieu pour l'oeuvre qu'ils venaient d'accomplir.

27 and having come and gathered together the assembly, they declared as many things as God did with them, and that He did open to the nations a door of faith;

A leur arrivée, ils convoquèrent l'Église et racontèrent les choses que Dieu avait faites par eux. «Il a ouvert aux païens, dirent-ils, la porte de la foi.»

28 and they abode there not a little time with the disciples.
