2 Timothy 2

1 Thou, therefore, my child, be strong in the grace that [is] in Christ Jesus,

Toi donc, mon enfant, fortifie-toi dans la grâce qui est en Christ Jésus;

2 and the things that thou didst hear from me through many witnesses, these things be committing to stedfast men, who shall be sufficient also others to teach;

et, ce que tu m'as entendu dire devant plusieurs témoins, confie-le à des hommes fidèles, qui soient capables d'en instruire aussi d'autres.

3 thou, therefore, suffer evil as a good soldier of Jesus Christ;

Prends ta part des souffrances comme un bon soldat de Christ Jésus;

4 no one serving as a soldier did entangle himself with the affairs of life, that him who did enlist him he may please;

aucun homme qui porte les armes ne se laisse entraver par les occupations de la vie ordinaire, afin de plaire à celui qui a rassemblé l'armée;

5 and if also any one may strive, he is not crowned, except he may strive lawfully;

de même encore nul athlète n'est couronné, s'il n'a lutté selon les règles;

6 the labouring husbandman it behoveth first of the fruits to partake;

c'est le laboureur qui travaille, qui, le premier, doit avoir sa part des fruits.

7 be considering what things I say, for the Lord give to thee understanding in all things.

Réfléchis à ce que je dis; car le seigneur te donnera l'intelligence de toutes choses.

8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised out of the dead, of the seed of David, according to my good news,

Rappelle-toi Jésus-Christ ressuscité des morts, issu de la postérité de David, selon mon évangile,

9 in which I suffer evil — unto bonds, as an evil-doer, but the word of God hath not been bound;

dans la prédication duquel je souffre jusques à être chargé de chaînes comme un malfaiteur; mais la parole de Dieu n'est point enchaînée;

10 because of this all things do I endure, because of the choice ones, that they also salvation may obtain that [is] in Christ Jesus, with glory age-during. (aiōnios g166)

c'est pourquoi je supporte tout à cause des élus, afin qu'eux aussi obtiennent le salut qui est en Christ Jésus, avec une gloire éternelle. (aiōnios g166)

11 Stedfast [is] the word: For if we died together — we also shall live together;

C'est une vérité certaine. En effet, si nous mourons avec lui, nous vivrons aussi avec lui;

12 if we do endure together — we shall also reign together; if we deny [him], he also shall deny us;

si nous persévérons, nous régnerons aussi avec lui; si nous le renions, lui aussi, il nous reniera;

13 if we are not stedfast, he remaineth stedfast; to deny himself he is not able.

si nous sommes infidèles, lui, il demeure fidèle, car il ne peut se renier lui-même.

14 These things remind [them] of, testifying fully before the Lord — not to strive about words to nothing profitable, but to the subversion of those hearing;

Voilà ce que tu dois remémorer, en prenant le seigneur à témoin. Abstiens-toi des disputes de mots; cela ne sert de rien, c'est la ruine des auditeurs.

15 be diligent to present thyself approved to God — a workman irreproachable, rightly dividing the word of the truth;

Empresse-toi de te mettre à la disposition de Christ, comme un ouvrier qui n'a point à rougir et qui se conforme fidèlement à la parole de la vérité;

16 and the profane vain talkings stand aloof from, for to more impiety they will advance,

mais évite les bavardages profanes, car ceux qui s'y livrent avanceront de plus en plus dans l'impiété,

17 and their word as a gangrene will have pasture, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus,

et leur parole rongera comme une gangrène; parmi eux se trouvent Hyménée et Philète,

18 who concerning the truth did swerve, saying the rising again to have already been, and do overthrow the faith of some;

qui se sont éloignés de la vérité, prétendant que la résurrection a déjà eu lieu; et ils détruisent la foi de quelques personnes.

19 sure, nevertheless, hath the foundation of God stood, having this seal, 'The Lord hath known those who are His,' and 'Let him depart from unrighteousness — every one who is naming the name of Christ.'

Néanmoins le fondement que Dieu a posé demeure ferme, portant pour sceau ces paroles: « Le Seigneur connaît ceux qui Lui appartiennent, » et: Que quiconque prononce le nom du seigneur se détourne de l'injustice.

20 And in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth, and some to honour, and some to dishonour:

Or, dans une grande maison, il n'y a pas seulement des ustensiles d'or et d'argent, mais aussi de bois et de terre; tandis que les uns sont destinés à un noble emploi, les autres le sont à un emploi ignoble.

21 if, then, any one may cleanse himself from these, he shall be a vessel to honour, sanctified and profitable to the master — to every good work having been prepared,

Si donc quelqu'un se purifie lui-même pour n'être pas de ceux-ci, il sera un ustensile destiné à un noble emploi, sanctifié, utile à son possesseur, préparé pour tout bon usage.

22 and the youthful lusts flee thou, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those calling upon the Lord out of a pure heart;

Eh bien, fuis les convoitises juvéniles, mais recherche la justice, la foi, la charité, et la paix avec tous ceux qui aiment le Seigneur d'un cœur pur.

23 and the foolish and uninstructed questions be avoiding, having known that they beget strife,

Repousse, au contraire, les discussions folles et déréglées, sachant qu'elles engendrent des querelles;

24 and a servant of the Lord it behoveth not to strive, but to be gentle unto all, apt to teach, patient under evil,

or, il ne faut point que l'esclave du Seigneur se querelle, mais qu'il soit doux avec tout le monde, capable d'enseigner, patient,

25 in meekness instructing those opposing — if perhaps God may give to them repentance to an acknowledging of the truth,

redressant avec mansuétude les opposants, afin de voir si Dieu ne leur donnera peut-être point de se repentir, pour arriver à la connaissance de la vérité,

26 and they may awake out of the devil's snare, having been caught by him at his will.

et s'ils ne redeviendront point sages, en se dégageant des pièges du diable, par qui ils ont été capturés pour faire sa volonté.
