2 Samuel 18
1 And David inspecteth the people who [are] with him, and setteth over them heads of thousands and heads of hundreds,
Nun musterte David das Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, und setzte Anführer ein über je tausend und über je hundert Mann.
2 and David sendeth the third of the people by the hand of Joab, and the third by the hand of Abishai, son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, and the third by the hand of Ittai the Gittite, and the king saith unto the people, 'I certainly go out — I also — with you.'
Dann ließ David das Heer ausrücken, ein Drittel unter dem Befehl Joabs, ein Drittel unter Abisai, dem Sohn der Zeruja, dem Bruder Joabs, und das letzte Drittel unter dem Befehl Itthais aus Gath. Dabei sagte der König zu der Mannschaft: »Ich will auch mit euch ausziehen!«
3 And the people say, 'Thou dost not go out, for if we utterly flee, they do not set [their] heart upon us; and if half of us die, they do not set [their] heart unto us — for now like us [are] ten thousand; and now, better that thou be to us from the city for an helper.'
Aber die Leute entgegneten: »Nein, du darfst nicht mitziehen! Denn wenn wir geschlagen werden, wird man sich um uns nicht kümmern; und wenn auch die Hälfte von uns fiele, würde man sich um uns nicht kümmern, du dagegen bist so viel wert wie zehntausend von uns. Außerdem ist es besser, wenn du uns jederzeit von der Stadt aus Hilfe leisten kannst.«
4 And the king saith unto them, 'That which is good in your eyes I do;' and the king standeth at the side of the gate, and all the people have gone out by hundreds and by thousands,
Da antwortete ihnen der König: »Ich will eurem Wunsche nachkommen!« Hierauf trat der König neben das Tor, während das ganze Heer nach Hunderten und Tausenden auszog.
5 and the king chargeth Joab, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, 'Gently — for me, for the youth, for Absalom;' and all the people heard in the king's charging all the heads concerning Absalom.
Dem Joab, Abisai und Itthai aber erteilte der König den Befehl: »Geht mir schonend mit dem jungen Mann, mit Absalom, um!« Und das gesamte Kriegsvolk hörte es mit an, wie der König allen Anführern diesen Befehl in betreff Absaloms erteilte.
6 And the people goeth out into the field to meet Israel, and the battle is in a forest of Ephraim;
Als so das Heer ins Feld gegen die Israeliten gezogen war und es im Walde Ephraim zur Schlacht kam,
7 and smitten there are the people of Israel before the servants of David, and the smiting there is great on that day — twenty thousand;
wurde dort das Heer der Israeliten von den Leuten Davids besiegt, so daß sie an diesem Tage dort eine schwere Niederlage, einen Verlust von zwanzigtausend Mann, erlitten.
8 and the battle is there scattered over the face of all the land, and the forest multiplieth to devour among the people more than those whom the sword hath devoured in that day.
Der Kampf breitete sich dann über die ganze Gegend dort aus, und der Wald brachte an diesem Tage noch mehr Leuten den Tod, als das Schwert es getan hatte.
9 And Absalom meeteth before the servants of David, and Absalom is riding on the mule, and the mule cometh in under an entangled bough of the great oak, and his head taketh hold on the oak, and he is placed between the heavens and the earth, and the mule that [is] under him hath passed on.
Da kam Absalom zufällig den Leuten Davids zu Gesicht. Er ritt nämlich auf einem Maultier, und als dieses unter die verschlungenen Zweige einer großen Terebinthe geraten war, blieb er mit dem Haupt (-haar) an der Terebinthe hangen, so daß er zwischen Himmel und Erde schwebte, nachdem das Maultier unter ihm davongelaufen war.
10 And one man seeth, and declareth to Joab, and saith, 'Lo, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.'
Als das ein Mann sah, erstattete er dem Joab die Meldung: »Ich habe soeben Absalom an einer Terebinthe hängen sehen.«
11 And Joab saith to the man who is declaring [it] to him, 'And lo, thou hast seen — and wherefore didst thou not smite him there to the earth — and on me to give to thee ten silverlings and one girdle?'
Da erwiderte Joab dem Manne, der ihm die Mitteilung gemacht hatte: »Nun, wenn du ihn gesehen hast, warum hast du ihn dort nicht gleich zur Erde heruntergeschlagen? Ich wäre dann in der Lage gewesen, dir zehn Silberstücke und einen Gürtel zu geben!«
12 And the man saith unto Joab, 'Yea, though I am weighing on my hand a thousand silverlings, I do not put forth my hand unto the son of the king; for in our ears hath the king charged thee, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, Observe ye who [is] against the youth — against Absalom;
Der Mann aber antwortete dem Joab: »Und wenn mir tausend Silberstücke in die Hand gezahlt würden, wollte ich mich doch nicht an dem Sohne des Königs vergreifen; wir haben ja mit eigenen Ohren gehört, wie der König dir und Abisai und Itthai den bestimmten Befehl gegeben hat: ›Verfahrt mir schonend mit dem jungen Manne, mit Absalom!‹
13 or I had done against my soul a vain thing, and no matter is hid from the king, and thou — thou dost station thyself over-against.'
Hätte ich mich nun frevelhaft an seinem Leben vergriffen, so wäre die ganze Sache dem König doch nicht verborgen geblieben, und du selbst würdest dich abseits stellen.«
14 And Joab saith, 'Not right — I tarry before thee;' and he taketh three darts in his hand, and striketh them into the heart of Absalom, while he [is] alive, in the midst of the oak.
Da sagte Joab: »Ich mag hier bei dir keine Zeit verlieren!« Hierauf nahm er drei Speere in die Hand und stieß sie dem Absalom ins Herz, während er, noch lebend, in den Zweigen der Terebinthe hing.
15 And they go round — ten youths bearing weapons of Joab — and smite Absalom, and put him to death.
Dann traten zehn Knappen, Joabs Waffenträger, rings hinzu, schlugen Absalom herunter und töteten ihn vollends.
16 And Joab bloweth with a trumpet, and the people turneth back from pursuing after Israel, for Joab hath kept back the people;
Darauf ließ Joab ein Zeichen mit der Posaune geben, da standen die Leute Davids von der Verfolgung der Israeliten ab; denn dem Volk wollte Joab Schonung erweisen.
17 and they take Absalom and cast him in the forest unto the great pit, and set up over him a very great heap of stones, and all Israel have fled — each to his tent.
Darauf nahmen sie Absalom, warfen ihn im Walde in eine große Grube und türmten einen gewaltigen Steinhaufen über ihm auf. Alle Israeliten aber flohen, ein jeder in seinen Wohnort. –
18 And Absalom hath taken, and setteth up for himself in his life, the standing-pillar that [is] in the king's valley, for he said, 'I have no son to cause my name to be remembered;' and he calleth the standing-pillar by his own name, and it is called 'The monument of Absalom' unto this day.
Absalom hatte aber schon bei seinen Lebzeiten den Denkstein, der im Königstal steht, genommen und ihn für sich aufgerichtet; er hatte nämlich gedacht: »Ich habe keinen Sohn, der meinen Namen in der Erinnerung erhalten könnte.« Er hatte also den Denkstein nach seinem Namen benannt; und darum heißt er bis auf den heutigen Tag ›Absaloms Denkmal‹.
19 And Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run, I pray thee, and I bear the king tidings, for Jehovah hath delivered him out of the hand of his enemies;'
Ahimaaz aber, der Sohn Zadoks, sagte (zu Joab): »Ich möchte gern hinlaufen und dem König die Botschaft bringen, daß der HERR ihm den Sieg über seine Feinde verliehen hat!«
20 and Joab saith to him, 'Thou art not a man of tidings this day, but thou hast borne tidings on another day, and this day thou dost not bear tidings, because the king's son [is] dead.'
Aber Joab erwiderte ihm: »Du bist heute nicht der rechte Mann für diese Botschaft; ein andermal magst du Bote sein, aber heute darfst du die Botschaft nicht überbringen, weil ja der Sohn des Königs tot ist.«
21 And Joab saith to Cushi, 'Go, declare to the king that which thou hast seen;' and Cushi boweth himself to Joab, and runneth.
Hierauf befahl Joab seinem Mohren: »Gehe hin, melde dem König, was du gesehen hast!« Da warf sich der Mohr vor Joab nieder und eilte davon.
22 And Ahimaaz son of Zadok addeth again, and saith unto Joab, 'And whatever it be, let me run, I pray thee, I also, after the Cushite.' And Joab saith, 'Why [is] this — thou art running, my son, and for thee there are no tidings found?' —
Aber Ahimaaz, der Sohn Zadoks, sagte nochmals zu Joab: »Mag kommen, was da will: laß doch auch mich hinter dem Mohren herlaufen!« Joab entgegnete: »Wozu willst du denn laufen, mein Sohn? Dir wird doch kein Botenlohn ausgezahlt werden.«
23 'And, whatever it be, [said he, ] let me run.' And he saith to him, 'Run;' and Ahimaaz runneth the way of the circuit, and passeth by the Cushite.
Er antwortete: »Mag kommen, was da will: ich laufe!« Da sagte Joab zu ihm: »Nun, so laufe!« Da schlug Ahimaaz den Weg durch die Jordanaue ein und überholte den Mohren.
24 And David is sitting between the two gates, and the watchman goeth unto the roof of the gate, unto the wall, and lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, a man running by himself.
David aber saß gerade inmitten der beiden Torpforten, während der Späher auf der Mauer nach dem Tordach zu ging. Als dieser nun Ausschau hielt, sah er einen einzelnen Mann heranlaufen.
25 And the watchman calleth, and declareth to the king, and the king saith, 'If by himself, tidings [are] in his mouth;' and he cometh, coming on and drawing near.
Da meldete es der Späher dem König durch Zuruf. Der König sagte: »Wenn es nur einer ist, so hat er gute Nachricht zu überbringen.« Während nun jener immer näher kam,
26 And the watchman seeth another man running, and the watchman calleth unto the gatekeeper, and saith, 'Lo, a man running by himself;' and the king saith, 'Also this one is bearing tidings.'
sah der Späher noch einen zweiten Mann heranlaufen und rief ins Tor hinein: »Ich sehe noch einen zweiten Mann allein heranlaufen!« Da sagte der König: »Auch der bringt gute Botschaft.«
27 And the watchman saith, 'I see the running of the first as the running of Ahimaaz son of Zadok.' And the king saith, 'This [is] a good man, and with good tidings he cometh.'
Der Späher rief dann weiter: »Am Laufen des ersten glaube ich Ahimaaz, den Sohn Zadoks, zu erkennen!« Der König sagte: »Das ist ein braver Mann: der kommt gewiß mit guter Botschaft!«
28 And Ahimaaz calleth and saith unto the king, 'Peace;' and he boweth himself to the king, on his face, to the earth, and saith, 'Blessed [is] Jehovah thy God who hath shut up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king.'
Ahimaaz aber rief dem König zu: »Sieg!« Dann warf er sich vor dem Könige mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder und rief aus: »Gepriesen sei der HERR, dein Gott, der die Männer dahingegeben hat, die ihre Hand gegen meinen Herrn, den König, erhoben haben!«
29 And the king saith, 'Peace to the youth — to Absalom?' And Ahimaaz saith, 'I saw the great multitude, at the sending away of the servant of the king, even thy servant [by] Joab, and I have not known what [it is].'
Der König aber fragte: »Geht es dem jungen Manne, dem Absalom, gut?« Ahimaaz antwortete: »Ich sah ein großes Getümmel, als des Königs Diener Joab deinen Knecht absandte, weiß aber nicht, was da vorging.«
30 And the king saith, 'Turn round, station thyself here;' and he turneth round and standeth still.
Der König entgegnete: »Tritt ab und bleibe hier stehen!« Da trat er ab und stellte sich abseits,
31 And lo, the Cushite hath come, and the Cushite saith, 'Let tidings be proclaimed, my lord, O king; for Jehovah hath delivered thee to-day out of the hand of all those rising up against thee.'
als auch schon der Mohr ankam und ausrief: »Mein Herr, der König, lasse sich die Freudenbotschaft melden, daß der HERR dir heute den Sieg über alle verliehen hat, die sich gegen dich empört haben!«
32 And the king saith unto the Cushite, 'Peace to the youth — to Absalom?' And the Cushite saith, 'Let them be — as the youth — the enemies of my lord the king, and all who have risen up against thee for evil.'
Da fragte der König den Mohren: »Geht es dem jungen Manne, dem Absalom, gut?« Der Mohr antwortete: »Wie dem jungen Manne, so möge es den Feinden des Königs, meines Herrn, und allen ergehen, die sich in böser Absicht gegen dich auflehnen!«
33 And the king trembleth, and goeth up on the upper chamber of the gate, and weepeth, and thus he hath said in his going, 'My son! Absalom my son; my son Absalom; oh that I had died for thee, Absalom, my son, my son.'
Da erbebte der König, stieg in das Obergemach des Torgebäudes hinauf und weinte; im Gehen aber rief er die Worte aus: »Mein Sohn Absalom! Mein Sohn! Mein Sohn Absalom! Wäre doch ich selber statt deiner gestorben! O Absalom, mein Sohn, mein Sohn!«
