2 Samuel 10

1 And it cometh to pass afterwards, that the king of the Bene-Ammon dieth, and Hanun his son reigneth in his stead,

Or, il arriva après cela que le roi des enfants d’Ammon mourut, et Hanon, son fils, régna en sa place.

2 and David saith, 'I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, as his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth to comfort him by the hand of his servants concerning his father, and the servants of David come in to the land of the Bene-Ammon.

Et David dit: Je ferai miséricorde à Hanon, fils de Naas, comme son père m’a fait miséricorde. David envoya donc, le consolant par ses serviteurs de la mort de son père. Mais lorsque les serviteurs de David furent venus dans la terre des enfants d’Ammon,

3 And the heads of the Bene-Ammon say unto Hanun their lord, 'Is David honouring thy father in thine eyes because he hath sent to thee comforters? for to search the city, and to spy it, and to overthrow it, hath not David sent his servants unto thee?'

Les princes des enfants d’Ammon dirent à Hanon leur seigneur: Pensez-vous que ce soit pour l’honneur de votre père, que David vous ait envoyé des consolateurs, et que ce ne soit pas pour s’enquérir de la ville, l’explorer et la détruire, que David a envoyé ses serviteurs vers vous?

4 And Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth off the half of their beard, and cutteth off their long robes in the midst — unto their buttocks, and sendeth them away;

C’est pourquoi Hanon prit les serviteurs de David, rasa la moitié de leur barbe, coupa la moitié de leurs vêtements jusqu’au haut des cuisses, et les renvoya.

5 and they declare [it] to David, and he sendeth to meet them, for the men have been greatly ashamed, and the king saith, 'Abide in Jericho till your beard doth spring up — then ye have returned.'

Lorsque cela eut été annoncé à David, il envoya au-devant d’eux; car ces hommes étaient très honteusement confus, et David leur manda: Demeurez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe croisse, et alors revenez.

6 And the Bene-Ammon see that they have been abhorred by David, and the Bene-Ammon send and hire Aram of Beth-Rehob, and Aram of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah [with] a thousand men, and Ish-Tob [with] twelve thousand men;

Mais les enfants d’Ammon, voyant qu’ils avaient fait injure à David, envoyèrent prendre à leur solde des Syriens de Rohob, et des Syriens de Soba, vingt mille hommes de pied, mille du roi de Maacha, et douze mille d’Istob.

7 and David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host — the mighty men.

Ce qu’ayant appris David, il envoya Joab et toute l’armée de ses guerriers.

8 And the Bene-Ammon come out, and set battle in array, at the opening of the gate, and Aram of Zoba, and Rehob, and Ish-Tob, and Maacah, [are] by themselves in the field;

Les enfants d’Ammon sortirent donc, et rangèrent leur armée en bataille devant l’entrée même de la porte, mais les Syriens de Soba et de Rohob, d’Istob et de Maacha, étaient séparément dans la plaine.

9 and Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him before and behind, and he chooseth of all the chosen in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

Joab donc, voyant que la bataille était préparée contre lui et par devant et par derrière, prit de toute l’élite d’Israël, et rangea son armée en bataille contre les Syriens;

10 and the rest of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and setteth in array to meet the Bene-Ammon.

Mais le reste du peuple, il le confia à Abisaï son frère, qui le rangea en bataille contre les enfants d’Ammon.

11 And he saith, 'If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation, and if the Bene-Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have come to give salvation to thee;

Et Joab dit: Si les Syriens prévalent contre moi, tu me seras en aide; mais si les enfants d’Ammon prévalent contre toi, je te secourrai.

12 be strong and strengthen thyself for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

Sois homme courageux, et combattons pour notre peuple, et la cité de notre Dieu: mais le Seigneur fera ce qui est bon à ses yeux.

13 And Joab draweth nigh, and the people who [are] with him, to battle against Aram, and they flee from his presence;

C’est pourquoi Joab et le peuple qui était avec lui engagèrent le combat contre les Syriens, qui aussitôt s’enfuirent devant lui.

14 and the Bene-Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee from the presence of Abishai, and go in to the city; and Joab turneth back from the Bene-Ammon, and cometh in to Jerusalem.

Mais les enfants d’Ammon voyant que les Syriens avaient fui, s’enfuirent aussi eux-mêmes devant Abisaï, et ils entrèrent dans la ville; et Joab s’en retourna après la défaite des enfants d’Ammon, et vint à Jérusalem.

15 And Aram seeth that it is smitten before Israel, and they are gathered together;

Les Syriens donc, voyant qu’ils avaient succombé devant Israël, s’assemblèrent tous.

16 and Hadadezer sendeth, and bringeth out Aram which [is] beyond the River, and they come in to Helam, and Shobach head of the host of Hadadezer [is] before them.

Et Adarézer envoya pour faire venir les Syriens, qui étaient au-delà du fleuve, et il amena leur armée; or, Sobach, maître de la milice d’Adarézer, était leur prince.

17 And it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in to Helam, and Aram setteth itself in array to meet David, and they fight with him;

Lorsque cela eut été annoncé à David, il réunit tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, et vint à Hélam; et les Syriens rangèrent leur armée en bataille contre David, et combattirent contre lui.

18 and Aram fleeth from the presence of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven hundred charioteers, and forty thousand horsemen, and Shobach head of its host he hath smitten, and he dieth there.

Et les Syriens s’enfuirent devant Israël, et David tua des Syriens sept cents hommes qui étaient sur les chariots, et quarante mille cavaliers; et il frappa Sobach, prince de la milice, lequel mourut sur-le-champ.

19 And all the kings — servants of Hadadezer — see that they have been smitten before Israel, and make peace with Israel, and serve them; and Aram is afraid to help any more the Bene-Ammon.

Or, tous les rois qui étaient venus au secours d’Adarézer, voyant qu’ils étaient vaincus par Israël, furent épouvantés, et cinquante-huit mille hommes s’enfuirent devant Israël. Et ils firent la paix avec Israël, et ils les servirent; et les Syriens craignirent de donner encore secours aux enfants d’Ammon.
