2 Chronicles 32
1 After these things and this truth, come hath Sennacherib king of Asshur, yea, he cometh in to Judah, and encampeth against the cities of the bulwarks, and saith to rend them unto himself.
Après ces faits et ces actes de fidélité [d'Ézéchias], parut Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, et il envahit Juda et assiégea les places fortes et parlait de s'y ouvrir la brèche.
2 And Hezekiah seeth that Sennacherib hath come, and his face [is] to the battle against Jerusalem,
Et Ezéchias voyant que Sanchérib était venu et projetait d'attaquer Jérusalem,
3 and he taketh counsel with his heads and his mighty ones, to stop the waters of the fountains that [are] at the outside of the city — and they help him,
il décida avec ses chefs et ses braves d'obstruer les sources d'eau qui sont en dehors de la ville, et ils l'aidèrent.
4 and much people are gathered, and they stop all the fountains and the brook that is rushing into the midst of the land, saying, 'Why do the kings of Asshur come, and have found much water?'
Et il y eut concours d'une grande foule de gens qui obstruèrent toutes les sources et le cours d'eau qui arrose le milieu de la contrée, et disaient: Pourquoi faudrait-il que les rois d'Assyrie vinssent et trouvassent des eaux abondantes?
5 And he strengtheneth himself, and buildeth the whole of the wall that is broken, and causeth [it] to ascend unto the towers, and at the outside of the wall another, and strengtheneth Millo, [in] the city of David, and maketh darts in abundance, and shields.
Et il prit courage et releva tous les murs écroulés et les éleva jusqu'aux tours, et en dehors il construisit un autre mur, et fortifia Millo, Cité de David, et fit quantité de projectiles et boucliers.
6 And he putteth heads of war over the people, and gathereth them unto him, unto the broad place of a gate of the city, and speaketh unto their heart, saying,
Et il préposa des chefs militaires sur le peuple, et les assembla auprès de lui dans la place à la porte de la ville et leur parla affectueusement en ces termes:
7 'Be strong and courageous, be not afraid, nor be cast down from the face of the king of Asshur, and from the face of all the multitude that [is] with him, for with us [are] more than with him.
Courage et fermeté! N'ayez ni crainte ni appréhension du roi d'Assyrie, non plus que de toute la multitude qu'il a avec lui! car nous, nous avons avec nous plus que lui.
8 With him [is] an arm of flesh, and with us [is] Jehovah our God, to help us, and to fight our battles;' and the people are supported by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
Avec lui est un bras de chair, et avec nous, l'Éternel, notre Dieu, pour nous être en aide et combattre notre combat. Et le peuple s'assura sur les paroles d'Ézéchias, roi de Juda.
9 After this hath Sennacherib king of Asshur sent his servants to Jerusalem — and he [is] by Lachish, and all his power with him — against Hezekiah king of Judah, and against all Judah, who [are] in Jerusalem, saying,
Sur ces entrefaites Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem (lui-même étant devant Lachis, ayant avec lui toutes les forces de son empire) vers Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et vers tout le monde de Juda qui était à Jérusalem, pour dire:
10 'Thus said Sennacherib king of Asshur, On what are ye trusting and abiding in the bulwark, in Jerusalem?
Ainsi parle Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie: En quoi vous confiez-vous, et pourquoi restez-vous bloqués dans Jérusalem?
11 'Is not Hezekiah persuading you, to give you up to die by famine, and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God doth deliver us from the hand of the king of Asshur?
N'êtes-vous pas les dupes d'Ézéchias qui vous mène à la mort par la famine et la soif, quand il dit: L'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous tirera des mains du roi d'Assyrie?
12 Hath not Hezekiah himself turned aside His high places, and His altars, and speaketh to Judah and to Jerusalem, saying, Before one altar ye bow yourselves, and on it ye make perfume?
N'est-ce pas Ezéchias qui a aboli ses tertres et ses autels, et fait cette injonction à Juda et à Jérusalem: Devant l'unique autel vous adorerez et offrirez l'encens?
13 'Do ye not know what I have done — I and my fathers — to all peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands at all able to deliver their land out of my hand?
Ne savez-vous pas ce que moi et mes pères avons fait à tous les peuples des pays divers? Les dieux des nations des pays divers ont-ils été capables de sauver leurs pays de ma main?
14 Who among all the gods of these nations whom my fathers have devoted to destruction [is] he who hath been able to deliver his people out of my hand, that your God is able to deliver you out of my hand?
De tous ces dieux des nations anéantis par mes pères lequel est-ce qui a pu sauver son peuple de ma main, pour que votre Dieu puisse vous en sauver?
15 'And, now, let not Hezekiah lift you up, nor persuade you thus, nor give credence to him, for no god of any nation and kingdom is able to deliver his people from my hand, and from the hand of my fathers: also, surely your God doth not deliver you from my hand!'
Eh bien! donc, ne soyez pas les dupes d'Ézéchias, et ne vous laissez pas leurrer de la sorte, et ne le croyez pas! Car aucun dieu d'aucune nation ni royaume n'a su sauver son peuple de ma main et de celles de mes pères combien moins votre Dieu vous sauverait-il de ma main?
16 And again have his servants spoken against Jehovah God, and against Hezekiah His servant,
Et plus encore en dirent ses serviteurs contre Dieu, l'Éternel, et contre Ézéchias, son serviteur.
17 and letters he hath written to give reproach to Jehovah, God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, 'As the gods of the nations of the lands that have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah doth not deliver His people from my hand.'
Et il écrivit une lettre pour outrager l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, et l'attaquer par ses discours, en disant: De même que les dieux des nations des pays divers qui n'ont pu sauver leur peuple de ma main, de même le Dieu d'Ézéchias ne sauvera pas son peuple de ma main.
18 And they call with a great voice [in] Jewish, against the people of Jerusalem who [are] on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them, that they may capture the city,
Et ils crièrent à voix forte en hébreu au peuple de Jérusalem assis sur le mur, pour les effrayer et les épouvanter, à l'effet de venir à bout de la ville.
19 and they speak against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the peoples of the land — work of the hands of man.
Et ils parlèrent du Dieu de Jérusalem comme des dieux des peuples de la terre, ouvrages de mains d'homme.
20 And Hezekiah the king prayeth, and Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, concerning this, and they cry to the heavens,
Et sur cela, le roi Ezéchias fut en prière ainsi que Ésaïe, fils d'Atmos, le prophète, et ils crièrent au ciel.
21 and Jehovah sendeth a messenger, and cutteth off every mighty one of valour — both leader and head — in the camp of the king of Asshur, and he turneth back with shame of face to his land, and entereth the house of his god, and those coming out of his bowels have caused him to fall there by the sword.
Alors l'Éternel envoya un ange qui fit périr tous les guerriers et princes et généraux dans le camp du roi d'Assyrie, qui retourna la honte au front dans son pays. Et comme il entrait dans le temple de son dieu, [les fils] sortis de ses entrailles l'y firent périr par l'épée.
22 And Jehovah saveth Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Asshur, and from the hand of all, and He leadeth them round about;
Ainsi l'Éternel sauva Ézéchias et les habitants de Jérusalem de la main de Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, et de la main de tous, et les mit en sûreté de toutes parts.
23 and many are bringing in an offering to Jehovah, to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, and he is lifted up before the eyes of all the nations after this.
Et un grand nombre apportèrent des offrandes à l'Éternel, à Jérusalem, et des objets de prix à Ézéchias, roi de Juda, qui dorénavant fut éminent aux yeux de toutes les nations.
24 In those days hath Hezekiah been sick even unto death, and he prayeth unto Jehovah, and He speaketh to him, and a wonder hath appointed for him;
Dans ces mêmes temps Ézéchias fut malade à la mort, et il fit sa prière à l'Éternel, qui l'exauça et lui accorda un prodige.
25 and Hezekiah hath not returned according to the deed [done] unto him, for his heart hath been lofty, and there is wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem;
Mais Ézéchias ne fut pas reconnaissant en raison du bienfait dont il était l'objet, car son cœur s'éleva; ce qui attira de la colère sur lui et sur Juda et Jérusalem.
26 and Hezekiah is humbled for the loftiness of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the wrath of Jehovah hath not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
Alors Ézéchias s'humilia de l'orgueil de son cœur, lui et les habitants de Jérusalem, et la colère de l'Éternel n'éclata pas sur eux du vivant d'Ézéchias.
27 And Hezekiah hath riches and honour very much, and treasures he hath made to himself of silver, and of gold, and of precious stone, and of spices, and of shields, and of all [kinds] of desirable vessels,
Et Ézéchias eut richesse et gloire en grande abondance; et il se fit des trésors pour l'argent et l'or et les pierres précieuses et les aromates et les boucliers et toutes sortes de vases précieux,
28 and storehouses for the increase of corn, and new wine, and oil, and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and herds for stalls;
et des magasins pour les produits en blé et moût et huile, et des râteliers pour toute espèce de bestiaux et des parcs pour les troupeaux.
29 and cities he hath made for himself, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance, for God hath given to him very much substance.
Et il se créa des villes et des troupeaux de menu et de gros bétail, en quantité, car Dieu lui avait accordé des biens très considérables.
30 And Hezekiah himself hath stopped the upper source of the waters of Gihon, and directeth them beneath to the west of the city of David, and Hezekiah prospereth in all his work;
Et ce même Ézéchias boucha l'issue supérieure de l'eau de Gihon qu'il conduisit en bas à l'occident de la Cité de David. Et Ézéchias réussit dans toutes ses entreprises.
31 and so with the ambassadors of the heads of Babylon, those sending unto him to inquire of the wonder that hath been in the land, God hath left him to try him, to know all in his heart,
Et en conséquence lors des messages des princes de Babel qui députèrent vers lui pour s'enquérir du miracle arrivé dans le pays, Dieu l'abandonna pour l'éprouver afin de connaître tout son cœur.
32 And the rest of the matters of Hezekiah, and his kind acts, lo, they are written in the vision of Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, on the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
Le reste des actes d'Ézéchias et ses actions pieuses sont d'ailleurs consignés dans la Vision d'Ésaïe, fils d'Amots, le prophète, dans le livre des rois de Juda et d'Israël.
33 And Hezekiah lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in the uppermost of the graves of the sons of David, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem have done honour to him at his death, and reign doth Manasseh his son in his stead.
Et Ézéchias reposa à côté de ses pères, et reçut la sépulture sur l'éminence des tombeaux des fils de David, et dans sa mort il fut l'objet de témoignages magnifiques de la part de tout Juda et des habitants de Jérusalem. Et Manassé, son fils, devint roi en sa place.
