1 Samuel 5

1 And the Philistines have taken the ark of God, and bring it in from Eben-Ezer to Ashdod,

Die Philister aber hatten die Lade Gottes an sich genommen und sie von Eben Ha-eser nach Asdod überführt.

2 and the Philistines take the ark of God and bring it into the house of Dagon, and set it near Dagon.

Darauf nahmen die Philister die Lade Gottes, brachten sie in den Tempel Dagons und stellen sie neben Dagon hin.

3 And the Ashdodites rise early on the morrow, and lo, Dagon is fallen on its face to the earth, before the ark of Jehovah; and they take Dagon, and put it back to its place.

Als aber die Asdoditer am andern Morgen früh in den Tempel Dagons kamen, gewahrten sie, daß Dagon vor der Lade Jahwes niedergefallen war auf sein Angesicht. Da nahmen sie den Dagon und stellen ihn wieder an seinen Platz.

4 And they rise early in the morning on the morrow, and lo, Dagon is fallen on its face to the earth, before the ark of Jehovah, and the head of Dagon, and the two palms of its hands are cut off at the threshold, only the fishy part hath been left to him;

Am andern Morgen früh aber befand sich, daß Dagon abermals vor der Lade Jahwes auf sein Angesicht niedergefallen war, und zwar lagen der Kopf Dagons und seine beiden Hände abgeschlagen auf der Schwelle; nur der Rumpf Dagons war noch von ihm zurückgeblieben.

5 therefore the priests of Dagon, and all those coming into the house of Dagon, tread not on the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, till this day.

Daher treten die Priester Dagons und wer irgend den Dagonstempel besucht bis auf den heutigen Tag nicht auf die Schwelle Dagons in Asdod.

6 And the hand of Jehovah is heavy on the Ashdodites, and He maketh them desolate, and smiteth them with emerods, Ashdod and its borders.

Es lag aber die Hand Jahwes schwer auf den Asdoditern; er setzte sie in Schrecken und schlug sie mit Pestbeulen, sowohl Asdod als sein Gebiet.

7 And the men of Ashdod see that [it is] so, and have said, 'The ark of the God of Israel doth not abide with us, for hard hath been His hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.'

Als aber die Leute von Asdod merkten, daß es an dem sei, erklärten sie: Die Lade des Gottes Israels soll nicht länger bei uns bleiben, denn seine Hand lastet schwer auf uns und unserem Gott Dagon.

8 And they send and gather all the princes of the Philistines unto them, and say, 'What do we do to the ark of the God of Israel?' and they say, 'To Gath let the ark of the God of Israel be brought round;' and they bring round the ark of the God of Israel;

Darauf sandten sie hin, versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister zu sich und sprachen: Was sollen wir mit der Lade des Gottes Israels anfangen? Jene erklärten: Nach Gath soll die Lade des Gottes Israels übergeführt werden. Da führten sie die Lade des Gottes Israels dorthin über.

9 and it cometh to pass after they have brought it round, that the hand of Jehovah is against the city — a very great destruction; and He smiteth the men of the city, from small even unto great; and break forth on them do emerods.

Aber nachdem man sie übergeführt hatte, kam die Hand Jahwes über die Stadt in Gestalt einer gewaltigen Bestürzung, und er schlug die Bewohner der Stadt, klein und groß, daß die Beulen an ihnen hervorbrachen.

10 And they send the ark of God to Ekron, and it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of God to Ekron, that the Ekronites cry out, saying, 'They have brought round unto us the ark of the God of Israel, to put us to death — and our people.'

Da schickten sie die Lade Gottes nach Ekron. Als aber die Lade Gottes in Ekron ankam, da wehklagten die Ekroniter: Sie haben die Lade des Gottes Israels zu mir übergeführt, um mich und mein Volk dem Tode preiszugeben!

11 And they send and gather all the princes of the Philistines, and say, 'Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and it turneth back to its place, and it doth not put us to death — and our people;' for there hath been a deadly destruction throughout all the city, very heavy hath the hand of God been there,

Sodann sandten sie hin, versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister und forderten: Schickt die Lade des Gottes Israels fort, daß sie an ihren Ort zurückkomme und nicht mich und mein Volk umbringe! Denn es war eine tödliche Bestürzung über die ganze Stadt gekommen; gar schwer lag die Hand Gottes darauf.

12 and the men who have not died have been smitten with emerods, and the cry of the city goeth up into the heavens.

Die Leute, die nicht starben, wurden mit Pestbeulen geplagt, und das Wehgeschrei der Stadt stieg zum Himmel empor.
