1 Kings 20
1 And Ben-Hadad king of Aram hath gathered all his force, and thirty and two kings [are] with him, and horse and chariot, and he goeth up and layeth siege against Samaria, and fighteth with it,
Benhadad aber, der König von Syrien, bot seine ganze Streitmacht auf, zweiunddreißig Könige leisteten ihm Heeresfolge mit Rossen und Wagen; so zog er heran, belagerte Samaria und bestürmte es.
2 and sendeth messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, to the city,
Dann schickte er Gesandte in die Stadt zu Ahab, dem König von Israel,
3 and saith to him, 'Thus said Ben-Hadad, 'Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy sons — the best — are mine.'
und ließ ihm sagen: »So spricht Benhadad: ›Dein Silber und Gold gehört mir, und deine Frauen und deine [schönsten] Kinder gehören ebenfalls mir.‹«
4 And the king of Israel answereth and saith, 'According to thy word, my lord, O king: I [am] thine, and all that I have.'
Der König von Israel gab ihm zur Antwort: »Wie du befiehlst, mein Herr und König: dein bin ich mit allem, was mir gehört.«
5 And the messengers turn back and say, 'Thus spake Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy sons, to me thou dost give;
Darauf kamen die Gesandten noch einmal und sagten: »So spricht Benhadad: ›Ich habe zu dir gesandt und dir sagen lassen: Dein Silber und dein Gold, deine Frauen und deine Kinder sollst du mir geben;
6 for if, at this time to-morrow, I send my servants unto thee then they have searched thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it hath been, every desirable thing of thine eyes they place in their hand, and have taken away.'
morgen also um diese Zeit werde ich meine Diener zu dir senden, damit sie deinen Palast und die Häuser deiner Diener durchsuchen; und sie sollen dann alles, was ihnen beachtenswert erscheint, mit Beschlag belegen und mitnehmen.‹«
7 And the king of Israel calleth to all the elders of the land, and saith, 'Know, I pray you, and see that evil this [one] is seeking, for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I withheld not from him.'
Da berief der König von Israel alle Ältesten des Landes und sagte: »Da könnt ihr nun klar erkennen, wie böse dieser Mensch es meint; denn als er zu mir sandte, um meine Frauen und meine Kinder, mein Silber und mein Gold zu fordern, habe ich es ihm nicht verweigert.«
8 And all the elders and all the people say unto him, 'Do not hearken, nor consent.'
Da antworteten ihm alle Ältesten und das gesamte Volk: »Da gehorchst du nicht und willigst nicht ein!«
9 And he saith to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, 'Say to my lord the king, All that thou didst send for unto thy servant at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do;' and the messengers go and take him back word.
So erwiderte er denn den Gesandten Benhadads: »Meldet meinem Herrn, dem Könige: ›Alles, was du von deinem Knecht zuerst verlangt hast, will ich tun, aber auf diese letzte Forderung kann ich nicht eingehen.‹« Als nun die Gesandten hingegangen waren und den Bescheid überbracht hatten,
10 And Ben-Hadad sendeth unto him, and saith, 'Thus do the gods to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who [are] at my feet.'
sandte Benhadad zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: »Die Götter sollen mich jetzt und künftig strafen, wenn der Schutt von Samaria hinreicht, allen Kriegern, an deren Spitze ich stehe, die hohlen Hände zu füllen!«
11 And the king of Israel answereth and saith, 'Speak ye: let not him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing [his armour].'
Darauf gab ihm der König von Israel zur Antwort: »Sagt ihm nur: ›Wer sich das Schwert umgürtet, darf sich nicht brüsten, als ob er es schon wieder ablegte.‹«
12 And it cometh to pass at the hearing of this word — and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the booths — that he saith unto his servants, 'Set yourselves;' and they set themselves against the city.
Als Benhadad diesen Bescheid vernahm, während er gerade mit den Königen in den Weinberglauben bei einem Trinkgelage zechte, rief er seinen Leuten zu: »Zum Angriff!«, und sie stellten sich zum Angriff gegen die Stadt auf.
13 And lo, a certain prophet hath come nigh unto Ahab king of Israel, and saith, 'Thus said Jehovah, 'Hast thou seen all this great multitude? lo, I am giving it into thy hand to-day, and thou hast known that I [am] Jehovah.'
Da trat plötzlich ein Prophet zu Ahab, dem König von Israel, und sagte: »So hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Siehst du diesen ganzen gewaltigen Heerhaufen? Wisse wohl: ich gebe ihn dir heute in die Hand, damit du erkennst, daß ich der HERR bin!‹«
14 And Ahab saith, 'By whom?' and he saith, 'Thus said Jehovah, By the young men of the heads of the provinces;' and he saith, 'Who doth direct the battle?' and he saith, 'Thou.'
Ahab fragte: »Durch wen?« Er antwortete: »So hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Durch die Leute der Landvögte.‹« Da fragte er weiter: »Wer soll den Kampf eröffnen?« Er erwiderte: »Du selbst.«
15 And he inspecteth the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred, two and thirty, and after them he hath inspecteth the whole of the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand,
Darauf musterte Ahab die Leute der Landvögte: es waren ihrer 232 Mann. Nach ihnen musterte er das gesamte übrige Kriegsvolk, alle Israeliten: es waren 7000 Mann.
16 and they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking — drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings, helping him.
Sie machten dann zur Mittagszeit einen Ausfall, als Benhadad sich gerade in den Lauben samt den zweiunddreißig mit ihm verbündeten Königen einen Rausch antrank.
17 And the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sendeth, and they declare to him, saying, 'Men have come out of Samaria.'
Als nun die Leute der Landvögte als Vortrab ausrückten und Benhadad durch Kundschafter, die er ausgesandt hatte, die Meldung erhielt, daß Leute aus Samaria ausgerückt seien,
18 And he saith, 'If for peace they have come out — catch them alive; and if for battle they have come out — alive catch them.'
befahl er: »Mögen sie in friedlicher oder in feindlicher Absicht ausgerückt sein: nehmt sie lebendig gefangen!«
19 And these have gone out of the city — the young men of the heads of the provinces — and the force that [is] after them,
Sobald aber jene aus der Stadt ausgerückt waren, nämlich die Leute der Landvögte und das ihnen folgende Heer,
20 and smite each his man, and Aram fleeth, and Israel pursueth them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapeth on a horse, and the horsemen;
schlugen sie wütend drein, so daß die Syrer flohen. Die Israeliten verfolgten sie, doch Benhadad, der König von Syrien, rettete sich zu Pferde mit einigen Reitern.
21 and the king of Israel goeth out, and smiteth the horses, and the charioteers, and hath smitten among the Aramaeans a great smiting.
Nun rückte auch der König von Israel selber aus, fiel über die Rosse und Wagen her und brachte den Syrern eine schwere Niederlage bei.
22 And the prophet cometh nigh unto the king of Israel, and saith to him, 'Go, strengthen thyself, and know and see that which thou dost, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against thee.'
Da trat der Prophet (wiederum) zum König von Israel und sagte zu ihm: »Wohlan, nimm dich zusammen und sieh wohl zu, was du zu tun hast! Denn übers Jahr wird der König von Syrien wieder gegen dich heranziehen.«
23 And the servants of the king of Aram said unto him, 'Gods of hills [are] their gods, therefore they were stronger than we; and yet, we fight with them in the plain — are we not stronger than they?
Die Heerführer des Königs von Syrien aber sagten zu ihm: »Ihr Gott ist ein Berggott, darum sind sie uns überlegen gewesen; wenn wir dagegen in der Ebene mit ihnen kämpfen könnten, würden wir sie gewiß besiegen.
24 'And this thing do thou: turn aside the kings each out of his place, and set captains in their stead;
Gehe also folgendermaßen zu Werke: Entferne die Könige sämtlich von ihren Stellen und ersetze sie durch Statthalter;
25 and thou, number to thee a force as the force that is fallen from thee, and horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we fight with them in the plain; are we not stronger than they?' and he hearkeneth to their voice, and doth so.
sodann biete ein ebenso großes Heer auf, wie das vorige war, das dir verlorengegangen ist, ebenso Rosse und Wagen wie das vorige Mal; dann wollen wir mit ihnen in der Ebene kämpfen, so werden wir sie gewiß besiegen.« Benhadad ging auf ihren Vorschlag ein und verfuhr demgemäß.
26 And it cometh to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspecteth the Aramaeans, and goeth up to Aphek, to battle with Israel,
Als dann das Jahr um war, bot Benhadad die Syrer auf und zog nach Aphek, um dort den Israeliten eine Schlacht zu liefern.
27 and the sons of Israel have been inspected, and supported, and go to meet them, and the sons of Israel encamp before them, like two flocks of goats, and the Aramaeans have filled the land.
Nachdem auch die Israeliten gemustert worden waren und sich mit Mundvorrat versorgt hatten, zogen sie ihnen entgegen und lagerten sich ihnen gegenüber wie ein Paar kleine Ziegenherden, während die Syrer die ganze Gegend füllten.
28 And there cometh nigh a man of God, and speaketh unto the king of Israel, and saith, 'Thus said Jehovah, Because that the Aramaeans have said, God of hills [is] Jehovah, and He [is] not God of valleys — I have given the whole of this great multitude into thy hand, and ye have known that I [am] Jehovah.'
Da trat der Gottesmann abermals herzu und sagte zum König von Israel: »So hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Weil die Syrer gesagt haben, der HERR sei ein Gott der Berge, aber kein Gott der Ebenen, so will ich diesen ganzen gewaltigen Heerhaufen in deine Hand geben, damit ihr erkennt, daß ich der HERR bin.‹«
29 And they encamp one over-against another seven days, and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the battle draweth near, and the sons of Israel smite Aram — a hundred thousand footmen in one day.
So lagerten sie denn sieben Tage lang einander gegenüber; am siebten Tage aber kam es zur Schlacht, und die Israeliten erschlugen von den Syrern hunderttausend Mann Fußvolk an einem einzigen Tage;
30 And those left flee to Aphek, unto the city, and the wall falleth on twenty and seven chief men who are left, and Ben-Hadad hath fled, and cometh in unto the city, into the innermost part.
die Übriggebliebenen flüchteten sich in die Stadt Aphek. Da fiel die Stadtmauer über den 27000 Mann zusammen, die übriggeblieben waren. Auch Benhadad war geflohen und in die Stadt gekommen (und versteckte sich) von einem Gemach in das andere.
31 And his servants say unto him, 'Lo, we pray thee, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel — that they are kind kings; let us put, we pray thee, sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and we go out unto the king of Israel; it may be he doth keep thee alive.'
Da sagten seine Diener zu ihm: »Wir haben oft genug gehört, daß die Könige der Israeliten großmütige Könige seien. So wollen wir uns denn Bußgewänder um unsere Lenden legen und Stricke um unseren Kopf und so zum König von Israel hinausgehen; vielleicht schenkt er dir das Leben.«
32 And they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes [are] on their heads, and they come in unto the king of Israel, and say, 'Thy servant Ben-Hadad hath said, Let me live, I pray thee;' and he saith, 'Is he yet alive? he [is] my brother.'
Sie gürteten sich also Bußgewänder um ihre Lenden und legten Stricke um ihren Kopf; und als sie zum König von Israel kamen, sagten sie: »Dein Knecht Benhadad läßt dich bitten, ihm das Leben zu schenken.« Er antwortete: »Lebt er noch? Er ist ja mein Bruder.«
33 And the men observe diligently, and hasten, and catch it from him, and say, 'Thy brother Ben-Hadad;' and he saith, 'Go ye in, bring him;' and Ben-Hadad cometh out unto him, and he causeth him to come up on the chariot.
Die Männer nahmen das als eine gute Vorbedeutung; darum beeilten sie sich, ihn beim Wort zu nehmen, und sagten: »Benhadad ist also dein Bruder?« Da antwortete er: »Geht, bringt ihn her!«, und als Benhadad dann zu ihm hinauskam, ließ er ihn zu sich auf den Wagen steigen.
34 And he saith unto him, 'The cities that my father took from thy father, I give back, and streets thou dost make for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria;' — 'and I, with a covenant, send thee away;' and he maketh with him a covenant, and sendeth him away.
Da sagte Benhadad zu ihm: »Die Städte, die mein Vater deinem Vater weggenommen hat, will ich dir zurückgeben; auch magst du dir Handelshäuser in Damaskus anlegen, wie mein Vater sich solche in Samaria angelegt hat.« »Und ich«, entgegnete Ahab, »will dich auf Grund dieses Abkommens freilassen.« Er schloß also einen Vertrag mit ihm und ließ ihn frei.
35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour by the word of Jehovah, 'Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man refuseth to smite him,
Einer aber von den Prophetenschülern forderte auf Geheiß des HERRN seinen Genossen auf: »Bringe mir eine Wunde bei!« Als jener sich weigerte, ihn zu verwunden,
36 and he saith to him, 'Because that thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, lo, thou art going from me, and the lion hath smitten thee;' and he goeth from him, and the lion findeth him, and smiteth him.
sagte er zu ihm: »Zur Strafe dafür, daß du dem Befehl des HERRN nicht nachgekommen bist, wird dich, sobald du von mir weggegangen bist, ein Löwe töten.« Kaum war er dann von ihm weggegangen, da fiel ein Löwe ihn an und tötete ihn.
37 And he findeth another man, and saith, 'Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man smiteth him, smiting and wounding,
Als jener hierauf einen anderen (Genossen) traf, forderte er ihn (wieder) auf: »Bringe mir eine Wunde bei!« Da verwundete ihn dieser durch einen Schlag.
38 and the prophet goeth and standeth for the king on the way, and disguiseth himself with ashes on his eyes.
Nun ging der Prophet hin und stellte sich auf den Weg, den der König kommen mußte, machte sich aber durch eine Binde über seinen Augen unkenntlich.
39 And it cometh to pass — the king is passing by — that he hath cried unto the king, and saith, 'Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle, and lo, a man hath turned aside and bringeth in unto me a man, and saith, Keep this man; if he be at all missing, then hath thy life been for his life, or a talent of silver thou dost weigh out;
Als dann der König vorüberkam, rief er ihn laut an mit den Worten: »Dein Knecht war mit in die Schlacht gezogen; da trat plötzlich ein Mann, ein Oberer, an mich heran und brachte mir einen Gefangenen mit der Weisung: ›Bewache diesen Mann! Sollte er dir abhanden kommen, so haftest du mit deinem Leben für ihn, oder du hast ein Talent Silber zu bezahlen.‹
40 and it cometh to pass, thy servant is working hither and thither, and he is not!' and the king of Israel saith unto him, Right [is] thy judgment; thou hast determined [it].'
Während nun dein Knecht hier und da zu tun hatte, war der Mensch verschwunden.« Da sagte der König von Israel zu ihm: »Da hast du dein Urteil; du hast es dir selbst gesprochen.«
41 And he hasteth and turneth aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerneth him, that he [is] of the prophets,
Da entfernte jener schnell die Binde von seinen Augen, und der König von Israel erkannte in ihm einen von den Propheten.
42 and he saith unto him, 'Thus said Jehovah, Because thou hast sent away the man I devoted, out of [thy] hand, even thy life hath been for his life, and thy people for his people;'
Der aber sagte zu ihm: »So hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Weil du den Mann, der von mir dem Tode geweiht war, aus der Hand gelassen hast, mußt du mit deinem Leben für ihn haften und dein Volk für sein Volk.‹«
43 and the king of Israel goeth unto his house, sulky and wroth, and cometh in to Samaria.
Da zog der König von Israel mißmutig und verstört nach Hause und gelangte nach Samaria.
