1 Kings 18
1 And the days are many, and the word of Jehovah hath been unto Elijah in the third year, saying, 'Go, appear unto Ahab, and I give rain on the face of the ground;'
Después de muchos días, llegó la palabra de Yahvé a Elías, en el tercer año, diciendo: “Ve, muéstrate a Ajab, y yo enviaré lluvia sobre la tierra.”
2 and Elijah goeth to appear unto Ahab. And the famine is severe in Samaria,
Elías fue a mostrarse a Acab. La hambruna era grave en Samaria.
3 and Ahab calleth unto Obadiah, who [is] over the house — and Obadiah hath been fearing Jehovah greatly,
Ajab llamó a Abdías, que estaba a cargo de la casa. (Ahora bien, Abdías temía mucho a Yahvé;
4 and it cometh to pass, in Jezebel's cutting off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah taketh a hundred prophets, and hideth them, fifty men in a cave, and hath sustained them with bread and water —
porque cuando Jezabel eliminó a los profetas de Yahvé, Abdías tomó a cien profetas y los escondió a cincuenta en una cueva, y los alimentó con pan y agua).
5 and Ahab saith unto Obadiah, 'Go through the land, unto all fountains of waters, and unto all the brooks, if so be we find hay, and keep alive horse and mule, and do not cut off any of the cattle.'
Ajab le dijo a Abdías: “Recorre la tierra, ve a todas las fuentes de agua y a todos los arroyos. Tal vez encontremos hierba y salvemos vivos a los caballos y a las mulas, para que no perdamos todos los animales”.
6 And they apportion to themselves the land, to pass over into it; Ahab hath gone in one way by himself, and Obadiah hath gone in another way by himself;
Así que se repartieron la tierra para pasar por ella. Ajab se fue por un camino, y Abdías por otro.
7 and Obadiah [is] in the way, and lo, Elijah — to meet him; and he discerneth him, and falleth on his face, and saith, 'Art thou he — my lord Elijah?'
Cuando Abdías iba por el camino, he aquí que Elías le salió al encuentro. Lo reconoció, se postró sobre su rostro y dijo: “¿Eres tú, mi señor Elías?”.
8 And he saith to him, 'I [am]; go, say to thy lord, Lo, Elijah.'
Él le respondió: “Soy yo. Ve y dile a tu señor: “¡Hay que ver que Elías está aquí!”.
9 And he saith, 'What have I sinned, that thou art giving thy servant into the hand of Ahab — to put me to death?
Él dijo: “¿En qué he pecado, para que entregues a tu siervo en manos de Ajab, para que me mate?
10 Jehovah thy God liveth, if there is a nation and kingdom whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee; and they said, He is not, then he caused the kingdom and the nation to swear, that it doth not find thee;
Vive Yahvé, tu Dios, que no hay nación ni reino donde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarte. Cuando le dijeron: ‘No está aquí’, juró al reino y a la nación que no te encontrarían.
11 and now, thou art saying, Go, say to thy lord, Lo, Elijah;
Ahora dices: “Ve y dile a tu señor: “Aquí está Elías””.
12 and it hath been, I go from thee, and the Spirit of Jehovah doth lift thee up, whither I know not, and I have come to declare to Ahab, and he doth not find thee, and he hath slain me; and thy servant is fearing Jehovah from my youth.
Ocurrirá que, en cuanto te deje, el Espíritu de Yahvé te llevará no sé a dónde; y así, cuando venga y se lo diga a Ajab, y no te encuentre, me matará. Pero yo, tu siervo, he temido al Señor desde mi juventud.
13 'Hath it not been declared to my lord that which I have done in Jezebel's slaying the prophets of Jehovah, that I hide of the prophets of Jehovah a hundred men, fifty by fifty in a cave, and sustained them with bread and water?
¿No se le dijo a mi señor lo que hice cuando Jezabel mató a los profetas de Yahvé, cómo escondí a cien hombres de los profetas de Yahvé con cincuenta a una cueva, y los alimenté con pan y agua?
14 and now thou art saying, Go, say to my lord, Lo, Elijah — and he hath slain me!'
Ahora dices: “Ve y dile a tu señor: “Aquí está Elías”. Me matará”.
15 And Elijah saith, 'Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood, surely to-day I appear unto him.'
Elías dijo: “Vive el Señor de los Ejércitos, ante quien estoy, que hoy me mostraré ante él”.
16 And Obadiah goeth to meet Ahab, and declareth [it] to him, and Ahab goeth to meet Elijah,
Entonces Abdías fue a reunirse con Ajab y se lo comunicó, y Ajab fue a reunirse con Elías.
17 and it cometh to pass at Ahab's seeing Elijah, that Ahab saith unto him, 'Art thou he — the troubler of Israel?'
Cuando Ajab vio a Elías, le dijo: “¿Eres tú, perturbador de Israel?”
18 And he saith, 'I have not troubled Israel, but thou and the house of thy father, in your forsaking the commands of Jehovah, and thou goest after the Baalim;
El respondió: “No he molestado a Israel, sino a ti y a la casa de tu padre, porque habéis abandonado los mandamientos de Yahvé y habéis seguido a los baales.
19 and now, send, gather unto me all Israel, unto the mount of Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the shrine, four hundred — eating at the table of Jezebel.'
Ahora, pues, envía y reúne conmigo a todo Israel en el monte Carmelo, y a cuatrocientos cincuenta de los profetas de Baal, y a cuatrocientos de los profetas de Asera, que comen en la mesa de Jezabel.”
20 And Ahab sendeth among all the sons of Israel, and gathereth the prophets unto the mount of Carmel;
Entonces Acab envió a todos los hijos de Israel y reunió a los profetas en el monte Carmelo.
21 and Elijah cometh nigh unto all the people, and saith, 'Till when are ye leaping on the two branches? — if Jehovah [is] God, go after Him; and if Baal, go after him;' and the people have not answered him a word.
Elías se acercó a todo el pueblo y dijo: “¿Hasta cuándo vacilaréis entre los dos bandos? Si Yahvé es Dios, seguidlo; pero si es Baal, seguidlo”. La gente no dijo nada.
22 And Elijah saith unto the people, 'I — I have been left a prophet of Jehovah — by myself; and the prophets of Baal [are] four hundred and fifty men;
Entonces Elías dijo al pueblo: “Yo, sólo yo, he quedado como profeta de Yahvé; pero los profetas de Baal son cuatrocientos cincuenta hombres.
23 and let them give to us two bullocks, and they choose for themselves the one bullock, and cut it in pieces, and place [it] on the wood, and place no fire; and I — I prepare the other bullock, and have put [it] on the wood, and fire I do not place; —
Que nos den, pues, dos toros, y que escojan un toro para ellos, lo corten en pedazos, lo pongan sobre la leña y no pongan fuego debajo; y yo aderezaré el otro toro, lo pondré sobre la leña y no pondré fuego debajo.
24 and ye have called in the name of your god, and I — I call in the name of Jehovah, and it hath been, the god who answereth by fire — He [is] the God.' And all the people answer and say, 'Good [is] the word.'
Tú invocas el nombre de tu dios, y yo invocaré el nombre de Yahvé. El Dios que responde con fuego, que sea Dios”. Toda la gente respondió: “Lo que dices es bueno”.
25 And Elijah saith to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose for you the one bullock, and prepare first, for ye [are] the multitude, and call ye in the name of your god, and place no fire.'
Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: “Escoged un solo toro para vosotros y aderezadlo primero, porque sois muchos; e invocad el nombre de vuestro dios, pero no pongáis fuego debajo.”
26 And they take the bullock that [one] gave to them, and prepare, and call in the name of Baal from the morning even till the noon, saying, 'O Baal, answer us!' and there is no voice, and there is none answering; and they leap on the altar that one had made.
Tomaron el toro que les habían dado, lo aderezaron e invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: “¡Baal, escúchanos!”. Pero no hubo voz, ni nadie respondió. Saltaron alrededor del altar que se había hecho.
27 And it cometh to pass, at noon, that Elijah playeth on them, and saith, 'Call with a loud voice, for he [is] a god, for he is meditating, or pursuing, or on a journey; it may be he is asleep, an doth awake.'
Al mediodía, Elías se burló de ellos y dijo: “Griten, porque es un dios. O está sumido en sus pensamientos, o se ha ido a alguna parte, o está de viaje, o tal vez duerme y hay que despertarlo”.
28 And they call with a loud voice, and cut themselves, according to their ordinance, with swords and with spears, till a flowing of blood [is] on them;
Gritaron en voz alta y se cortaron en su camino con cuchillos y lanzas hasta que la sangre brotó sobre ellos.
29 and it cometh to pass, at the passing by of the noon, that they feign themselves prophets till the going up of the present, and there is no voice, and there is none answering, and there is none attending.
Cuando pasó el mediodía, profetizaron hasta la hora de la ofrenda de la tarde; pero no hubo voz ni respuesta, y nadie les prestó atención.
30 And Elijah saith to all the people, 'Come nigh unto me;' and all the people come nigh unto him, and he repaireth the altar of Jehovah that is broken down;
Elías dijo a todo el pueblo: “¡Acérquense a mí!”; y todo el pueblo se acercó a él. Él reparó el altar de Yahvé que había sido derribado.
31 and Elijah taketh twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah was, saying, 'Israel is thy name;'
Elías tomó doce piedras, según el número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, a quienes llegó la palabra de Yahvé diciendo: “Israel será tu nombre.”
32 and he buildeth with the stones an altar, in the name of Jehovah, and maketh a trench, as about the space of two measures of seed, round about the altar.
Con las piedras construyó un altar en nombre de Yahvé. Hizo una zanja alrededor del altar lo suficientemente grande como para contener dos seahs de semillas.
33 And he arrangeth the wood, and cutteth in pieces the bullock, and placeth [it] on the wood, and saith, 'Fill ye four pitchers of water, and pour on the burnt-offering, and on the wood;
Puso la madera en orden, cortó el toro en pedazos y lo puso sobre la madera. Dijo: “Llena cuatro tinajas con agua, y viértela sobre el holocausto y sobre la madera”.
34 and he saith, 'Do [it] a second time;' and they do [it] a second time; and he saith, 'Do [it] a third time;' and they do [it] a third time;
Dijo: “Háganlo por segunda vez;” y lo hicieron por segunda vez. Dijo: “Háganlo por tercera vez”, y lo hicieron por tercera vez.
35 and the water goeth round about the altar, and also, the trench he hath filled with water.
El agua corrió alrededor del altar, y también llenó de agua la zanja.
36 And it cometh to pass, at the going up of the [evening -]present, that Elijah the prophet cometh nigh and saith, 'Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, to-day let it be known that Thou [art] God in Israel, and I Thy servant, that by Thy word I have done the whole of these things;
A la hora de la ofrenda de la tarde, el profeta Elías se acercó y dijo: “Yahvé, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, haz que se sepa hoy que tú eres Dios en Israel y que yo soy tu siervo, y que he hecho todo esto por tu palabra.
37 answer me, O Jehovah, answer me, and this people doth know that Thou [art] Jehovah God; and Thou hast turned their heart backward.'
Escúchame, Yahvé, escúchame, para que este pueblo sepa que tú, Yahvé, eres Dios, y que has hecho volver su corazón”.
38 And there falleth a fire of Jehovah, and consumeth the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and the water that [is] in the trench it hath licked up.
Entonces el fuego del Señor cayó y consumió el holocausto, la madera, las piedras y el polvo; y lamió el agua que estaba en la zanja.
39 And all the people see, and fall on their faces, and say, 'Jehovah, He [is] the God, Jehovah, He [is] the God.'
Cuando todo el pueblo lo vio, se postró sobre sus rostros. Decían: “¡Yahvé, él es Dios! Yahvé, él es Dios!”
40 And Elijah saith to them, 'Catch ye the prophets of Baal; let not a man escape of them;' and they catch them, and Elijah bringeth them down unto the stream Kishon, and doth slaughter them there.
Elías les dijo: “¡Atrapen a los profetas de Baal! No dejéis que se escape ni uno de ellos”. Los apresaron, y Elías los hizo descender al arroyo Cisón, y allí los mató.
41 And Elijah saith to Ahab, 'Go up, eat and drink, because of the sound of the noise of the shower.'
Elías dijo a Ajab: “Levántate, come y bebe, porque se oye el ruido de la lluvia abundante”.
42 And Ahab goeth up to eat, and to drink, and Elijah hath gone up unto the top of Carmel, and he stretcheth himself out on the earth, and he placeth his face between his knees,
Entonces Acab subió a comer y a beber. Elías subió a la cima del Carmelo, se postró en tierra y puso su rostro entre sus rodillas.
43 and saith unto his young man, 'Go up, I pray thee, look attentively the way of the sea;' and he goeth up and looketh attentively, and saith, 'There is nothing;' and he saith, 'Turn back,' seven times.
Dijo a su siervo: “Sube ahora y mira hacia el mar”. Subió, miró y dijo: “No hay nada”. Dijo: “Vuelve a ir” siete veces.
44 And it cometh to pass, at the seventh, that he saith, 'Lo, a little thickness as the palm of a man is coming up out of the sea.' And he saith, 'Go up, say unto Ahab, 'Bind — and go down, and the shower doth not restrain thee.'
A la séptima vez, dijo: “He aquí que una pequeña nube, como la mano de un hombre, se levanta del mar”. Dijo: “Sube y dile a Ajab: “Prepárate y baja, para que la lluvia no te detenga””.
45 And it cometh to pass, in the meantime, that the heavens have become black — thick clouds and wind — and the shower is great; and Ahab rideth, and goeth to Jezreel,
Al poco tiempo, el cielo se oscureció con nubes y viento, y hubo una gran lluvia. Acab cabalgó y se dirigió a Jezreel.
46 and the hand of Jehovah hath been on Elijah, and he girdeth up his loins, and runneth before Ahab, till thine entering Jezreel.
La mano de Yahvé estaba sobre Elías; éste se metió el manto en el cinturón y corrió delante de Ajab hasta la entrada de Jezreel.
