< 1 Corinthians 8 >
1 And concerning the things sacrificed to idols, we have known that we all have knowledge: knowledge puffeth up, but love buildeth up;
devaprasaade sarvve. saam asmaaka. m j naanamaaste tadvaya. m vidma. h| tathaapi j naana. m garvva. m janayati kintu premato ni. s.thaa jaayate|
2 and if any one doth think to know anything, he hath not yet known anything according as it behoveth [him] to know;
ata. h ka"scana yadi manyate mama j naanamaasta iti tarhi tena yaad. r"sa. m j naana. m ce. s.titavya. m taad. r"sa. m kimapi j naanamadyaapi na labdha. m|
3 and if any one doth love God, this one hath been known by Him.
kintu ya ii"svare priiyate sa ii"svare. naapi j naayate|
4 Concerning the eating then of the things sacrificed to idols, we have known that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that there is no other God except one;
devataabaliprasaadabhak. sa. ne vayamida. m vidmo yat jaganmadhye ko. api devo na vidyate, eka"sce"svaro dvitiiyo naastiiti|
5 for even if there are those called gods, whether in heaven, whether upon earth — as there are gods many and lords many —
svarge p. rthivyaa. m vaa yadyapi ke. sucid ii"svara iti naamaaropyate taad. r"saa"sca bahava ii"svaraa bahava"sca prabhavo vidyante
6 yet to us [is] one God, the Father, of whom [are] the all things, and we to Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom [are] the all things, and we through Him;
tathaapyasmaakamadvitiiya ii"svara. h sa pitaa yasmaat sarvve. saa. m yadartha ncaasmaaka. m s. r.s. ti rjaataa, asmaaka ncaadvitiiya. h prabhu. h sa yii"su. h khrii. s.to yena sarvvavastuunaa. m yenaasmaakamapi s. r.s. ti. h k. rtaa|
7 but not in all men [is] the knowledge, and certain with conscience of the idol, till now, as a thing sacrificed to an idol do eat [it], and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
adhikantu j naana. m sarvve. saa. m naasti yata. h kecidadyaapi devataa. m sammanya devaprasaadamiva tad bhak. sya. m bhu njate tena durbbalatayaa te. saa. m svaantaani maliimasaani bhavanti|
8 But victuals do not commend us to God, for neither if we may eat are we in advance; nor if we may not eat, are we behind;
kintu bhak. syadravyaad vayam ii"svare. na graahyaa bhavaamastannahi yato bhu"nktvaa vayamutk. r.s. taa na bhavaamastadvadabhu"nktvaapyapak. r.s. taa na bhavaama. h|
9 but see, lest this privilege of yours may become a stumbling-block to the infirm,
ato yu. smaaka. m yaa k. samataa saa durbbalaanaam unmaathasvaruupaa yanna bhavet tadartha. m saavadhaanaa bhavata|
10 for if any one may see thee that hast knowledge in an idol's temple reclining at meat — shall not his conscience — he being infirm — be emboldened to eat the things sacrificed to idols,
yato j naanavi"si. s.tastva. m yadi devaalaye upavi. s.ta. h kenaapi d. r"syase tarhi tasya durbbalasya manasi ki. m prasaadabhak. sa. na utsaaho na jani. syate?
11 and the brother who is infirm shall perish by thy knowledge, because of whom Christ died?
tathaa sati yasya k. rte khrii. s.to mamaara tava sa durbbalo bhraataa tava j naanaat ki. m na vina. mk. syati?
12 and thus sinning in regard to the brethren, and smiting their weak conscience — in regard to Christ ye sin;
ityanena prakaare. na bhraat. r.naa. m viruddham aparaadhyadbhiste. saa. m durbbalaani manaa. msi vyaaghaatayadbhi"sca yu. smaabhi. h khrii. s.tasya vaipariityenaaparaadhyate|
13 wherefore, if victuals cause my brother to stumble, I may eat no flesh — to the age — that my brother I may not cause to stumble. (aiōn )
ato heto. h pi"sitaa"sana. m yadi mama bhraatu rvighnasvaruupa. m bhavet tarhyaha. m yat svabhraatu rvighnajanako na bhaveya. m tadartha. m yaavajjiivana. m pi"sita. m na bhok. sye| (aiōn )
