1 And sons of Issachar; Tola, and Puah, Jashub, and Shimron, four.
Issachar’s four sons were Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron.
2 And sons of Tola: Uzzi, and Rephaiah, and Jeriel, and Jahmai, and Jibsam, and Shemuel, heads of the house of their fathers, [even] of Tola, mighty of valour in their generations: their number in the days of David [is] twenty and two thousand and six hundred.
Tola’s sons were Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Samuel (OR, Shemuel). They were all leaders of the clans [descended from] them. In the record of Tola’s descendants were the names of 22,600 men who served in the army during the time that David was the king [of Israel].
3 And sons of Uzzi: Izrahiah; and sons of Izrahiah: Michael, and Obadiah, and Joel, Ishiah, Hamishah — all of them heads.
Uzzi’s son was Izrahiah. Izrahiah’s five sons were Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Isshiah. Izrahiah and his sons were all leaders of their clans.
4 And beside them, by their generations, of the house of their fathers, [are] troops of the host of battle, thirty and six thousand, for they multiplied wives and sons;
In the record of Izrahiah’s descendants were the names of 36,000 men who served in the army because they had many wives and children.
5 and their brethren of all the families of Issachar [are] mighty of valour, eighty and seven thousand, all have their genealogy.
In the records of the clans descended from Issachar were the names of 87,000 men who served in the army.
6 Of Benjamin: Bela, and Becher, and Jediael, three.
[Some of the] sons of Benjamin were Bela, Beker, and Jediael.
7 And sons of Bela: Ezbon, and Uzzi, and Uzziel, and Jerimoth, and Iri, five; heads of a house of fathers, mighty of valour, with their genealogy, twenty and two thousand, and thirty and four.
Bela’s five sons were Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri. They were all leaders of clans. In the records of the clans descended from Bela there were names of 22,034 men who served in the army.
8 And sons of Becher: Zemirah, and Joash, and Eliezar, and Elioenai, and Omri, and Jerimoth, and Abijah, and Anathoth, and Alameth. All these [are] sons of Becher,
Beker’s sons were Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, Anathoth, and Alemeth.
9 with their genealogy, after their generations, heads of a house of their fathers, mighty of valour, twenty thousand and two hundred.
In the records of the clans descended from Beker were the names of 20,200 men and leaders of the clans who served in the army.
10 And sons of Jediael: Bilhan; and sons of Bilhan: Jeush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Chenaanah, and Zethan, and Tarshish, and Ahishahar.
Jediael’s son was Bilhan. Bilhan’s sons were Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Kenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish, and Ahishahar.
11 All these [are] sons of Jediael, even heads of the fathers, mighty in valour, seventeen thousand and two hundred going out to the host for battle.
They were all leaders of clans descended from them. There were 17,200 of them who served in the army.
12 And Shuppim and Huppim [are] sons of Ir; Hushim son of Aher.
Shuppim and Huppim were descendants of Ir. [One of] the descendants of Aher was Hushim.
13 Sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shallum, sons of Bilhah.
Naphtali’s sons were Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. They were all descendants of [Jacob’s slave wife] Bilhah.
14 Sons of Manasseh: Ashriel, whom Jaladah his Aramaean concubine bare, with Machir father of Gilead.
[This is a list of] Manasseh’s descendants. Manasseh had a slave wife who was from Syria. She was the mother of Asriel and Makir. Makir was the father of Gilead.
15 And Machir took wives for Huppim and for Shuppim, and the name of the one [is] Maachah, and the name of the second Zelophehad, and Zelophehad hath daughters.
Makir [had two wives]. They were from the clans of Huppim and Shuppim. One of Makir’s wives was named Maacah. Another descendant [of Makir] was Zelophehad. Zelophehad [had no sons; he] had only daughters.
16 And Maachah wife of Machir beareth a son and calleth his name Peresh, and the name of his brother [is] Sheresh, and his sons [are] Ulam and Rakem.
Makir’s wife Maacah gave birth to two sons whom she named Peresh and Sheresh. Sheresh’s sons were Ulam and Rakem.
17 And son of Ulam: Bedan. These [are] sons of Gilead son of Machir, son of Manasseh.
Ulam’s son was Bedan. All those [men were considered to be] descendants of Gilead, who was the son of Makir and grandson of Manasseh.
18 And his sister Hammolecheth bare Ishhod, and Abiezer, and Mahalah.
Makir’s sister name was Hammoleketh who was the mother of Ishdod, Abiezer, and Mahlah.
19 And the sons of Shemida are Ahian, and Shechem, and Likhi, and Aniam.
[One son of Gilead was] Shemida, whose sons were Ahian, Shechem, Likhi, and Aniam.
20 And sons of Ephraim: Shuthelah, and Bered his son, and Tahath his son, and Eladah his son, and Tahath his son,
[This is a list of] the descendants of Ephraim. One son of Ephraim’s was Shuthelah. Shuthelah’s son was Bered. Bered’s son was Tahath. Tahath’s son was Eleadah. Eleadah’s son was [also named] Tahath.
21 and Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead; and slain them have men of Gath who are born in the land, because they came down to take their cattle.
Tahath’s son was Zabad. Zabad’s son was Shuthelah. [Ephraim’s other sons, ] Ezer and Elead, went to Gath [city] to steal some cows and sheep. But they were both killed by some of the men from that city.
22 And Ephraim their father mourneth many days, and his brethren come in to comfort him,
Their father Ephraim cried/mourned for them for many days, and his family came to comfort him.
23 and he goeth in unto his wife, and she conceiveth and beareth a son, and he calleth his name Beriah, because in evil had been his house, —
Then he and his wife had sex [EUP] [again], and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Ephraim named him Beriah [which resembles the word ‘trouble’, ] because of the trouble that his family had experienced.
24 and his daughter [is] Sherah, and she buildeth Beth-Horon, the lower and the upper, and Uzzen-Sherah —
Ephraim’s daughter was Sheerah. Her workers built [three towns]: Lower Beth-Horon, Upper Beth-Horon, and Uzzen-Sheerah.
25 and Rephah [is] his son, and Resheph, and Telah his son, and Tahan his son,
[Another] son of Ephraim was Rephah. Rephah’s son was Resheph. Resheph’s son was Telah. Telah’s son was Tahan.
26 Laadan his son, Ammihud his son, Elishama his son,
Tahan’s son was Ladan. Ladan’s son was Ammihud. Ammihud’s son was Elishama.
27 Non his son, Jehoshua his son.
Elishama’s son was Nun. Nun’s son was Joshua, [the man who led the Israelis after Moses died].
28 And their possession and their dwellings [are] Beth-El and its small towns, and to the east Naaran, and to the west Gezer and its small towns, and Shechem and its small towns, unto Gaza and its small towns;
[This is a list of] the cities and areas where the descendants of Ephraim lived: Bethel and the nearby villages; Naaran to the east; Gezer to the west and the nearby villages; and Shechem and the nearby villages. Those villages extended [north] as far as Ayyah and the nearby villages.
29 and by the parts of the sons of Manasseh, Beth-Shean and its small towns, Taanach and its small towns, Megiddo and its small towns, Dor and its small towns; in these dwelt the sons of Joseph son of Israel.
Along the border of the area where the descendants of Manasseh lived were these towns: Beth-Shan, Taanach, Megiddo, and Dor, and the nearby villages. The people who lived in all those places were descendants of Jacob’s son Joseph.
30 Son of Asher: Imnah, and Ishve, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister.
Asher’s sons were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah.
31 And sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malchiel — he [is] father of Birzavith.
Beriah’s sons were Heber and Malkiel. Malkiel was the father of Birzaith
32 And Heber begat Japhlet, and Shomer, and Hotham, and Shua their sister.
Heber was the father of Japhlet, Shomer, and Hotham. Their sister was Shua.
33 And sons of Japhlet: Pasach, and Bimhal, and Ashvath; these [are] sons of Japhlet.
Japhlet’s sons were Pasach, Bimhal, and Ashvath.
34 and sons of Shamer: Ahi, and Rohgah, Jehubbah, and Aram.
Japhlet’s [younger] brother was Shomer. Shomer’s sons were Rohgah, Hubbah, and Aram.
35 And son of Helem his brother: Zophah, and Imna, and Shelesh, and Amal.
Shomer’s [younger] brother was Hotham (OR, Helem). Hotham’s sons were Zophah, Imna, Shelesh, and Amal.
36 Sons of Zophah: Suah, and Harnepher, and Shual, and Beri, and Imrah,
Zophah’s sons were Suah, Harnepher, Shual, Beri, Imrah,
37 Bezer, and Hod, and Shamma, and Shilshah, and Ithran, and Beera.
Bezer, Hod, Shamma, Shilshah, Ithran [whose other name was Jether], and Beera.
38 And sons of Jether: Jephunneh, and Pispah, and Ara.
Jether’s sons were Jephunneh, Pispah, and Ara.
39 And sons of Ulla: Arah, and Hanniel, and Rezia.
[Another descendant of Asher was] Ulla, whose sons were Arah, Hanniel, and Rizia.
40 All these [are] sons of Asher, heads of the house of the fathers, chosen ones, mighty in valour, heads of the princes, with their genealogy, for the host, for battle, their number [is] twenty and six thousand men.
All those men were descendants of Asher, and they were all leaders of their clans. They were brave warriors and excellent leaders. In the record of the clans that are descended from Asher are [the names of] 26,000 men who served in the army.
