Ruth 4

1 Therfor Booz stiede to the yate, and sat there; and whanne he hadde seyn the kynesman passe forth, of whom the word was had, Booz seide to hym, Bowe thou a litil, and sitte here; and he clepide hym bi his name. And he turnede, and sat.

Or, Booz était monté à la porte et y avait pris place; et voilà que vint à passer le parent dont Booz avait parlé. Celui-ci dit: "Veuille t’approcher et t’asseoir là, un tel et tel." Il s’approcha et s’assit.

2 Forsothe Booz took ten `men of the eldere men of the citee, and seide to hem, Sitte ye here.

Puis Booz prit dix hommes d’entre les anciens de la ville et dit: "Asseyez-vous là." Et ils s’assirent.

3 And while thei saten, Booz spak to the kynesman, Noemy, that turnede ayen fro the cuntrey of Moab, seelde the part of the feeld of oure brother Elymelech,

S’Adressant au parent, il dit: "La pièce de terre qui appartenait à notre parent Elimélec, Noémi, revenue des plaines de Moab, veut la vendre.

4 which thing Y wolde that thou here; and Y wolde seie to thee bifor alle `men syttynge and grettere in birthe of my puple. If thou wolt haue in possessioun the feeld bi riyt of nyy kyn, bye thou, and `haue thou in possessioun; sotheli if it displesith thee, schewe thou this same thing to me, that Y wyte what Y `owe to do; for noon is niy in kyn, outakun thee which art the formere, and outakun me which am the secunde. And he answeride, Y schal bie the feeld.

J’Ai jugé bon de te rendre attentif à la chose et de te dire: Acquiers cette propriété en présence des personnes assises là et en présence des anciens de mon peuple. Si tu te décides à la racheter, c’est bien; si non, veuille me faire connaître tes intentions; car seul tu disposes du droit de rachat, moi ne venant qu’après toi." Il répondit: "Je ferai le rachat."

5 To whom Booz seide, Whanne thou hast bouyte the feeld of the `hond of the womman, thou owist `to take also Ruth of Moab, that was the wijf of the deed man, that thou reise the name of thi kynesman in his eritage.

Booz continua et dit: "Le jour où tu acquiers le champ de la main de Noémi, tu acquiers aussi Ruth, la Moabite, la femme du défunt, pour maintenir le nom du défunt à son patrimoine."

6 Which answeride, Y forsake the ryyt of nyy kyn; for Y owe not to do awei the eritage of my meynee; vse thou my priuelegie, which priuelegie Y knowleche me to wante gladli.

Le parent répliqua: "Je ne puis faire ce rachat à mon profit, sous peine de ruiner mon patrimoine à moi. Exerce toi-même mon droit de rachat, car moi je ne puis le faire."

Or, jadis en Israël, quand il s’agissait de rachat ou d’échange, tel était le procédé pour rendre définitif un contrat: l’un des contractants retirait sa sandale et la donnait à l’autre. Voilà quelle était la règle en Israël.

8 Therfor Booz seide to his kynesman, Take the scho fro thee; `which scho he vnlaside anoon fro his foot.

Donc le parent dit à Booz: "Fais l’acquisition à ton profit!" Et il retira sa sandale.

9 And Booz seide to the grettere men in birthe and to al the puple, Ye ben witnessis to dai, that Y haue take in possessioun alle thingis that weren of Elymelech, and of Chelion, and of Maalon, bi the yifte of Noemy;

Alors Booz dit aux anciens et à tout le peuple: "Vous êtes témoins aujourd’hui que j’acquiers de la main de Noémi tout ce qui appartenait à Elimélec, ainsi qu’à Mahlon et Kilion.

10 and that Y haue take in to wedlok Ruth of Moab, the wijf of Maalon, that Y reise the name of the deed man in his erytage; lest his name be doon awey fro his meynee and britheren and puple. Ye, he seide, ben witnessis of this thing.

Et Ruth aussi, la Moabite, femme de Mahlon, je l’acquiers comme épouse pour maintenir le nom du défunt à son patrimoine et empêcher que le nom du défunt ne s’éteigne parmi ses frères et dans sa ville natale. Vous en êtes témoins en ce jour!"

11 Al the puple, that was in the yate, answeride, and the grettere men in birthe answeriden, We ben witnessis; the Lord make this womman, that entrith in to thin hows, as Rachel and Lia, that bildiden the hows of Israel, that sche be ensaumple of vertu in Effrata, and haue a solempne name in Bethleem;

Tout le peuple qui se trouvait à la porte et les anciens répondirent: "Nous sommes témoins! Que l’Eternel rende l’épouse qui va entrer dans ta maison semblable à Rachel et à Léa, qui ont édifié à elles deux la maison d’Israël! Toi-même, puisses-tu prospérer à Efrata et illustrer ton nom à Bethléem!

12 and thin hows be maad as the hows of Fares, whom Thamar childide to Judas, of the seed which the Lord schal yyue to thee of this damesel.

Que ta maison soit comme la maison de Péréç, que Tamar enfanta à Juda, grâce aux enfants que le Seigneur te fera naître de cette femme!"

13 Therfor Booz took Ruth, and took hir to wijf; and he entride to hir, and the Lord yaf to hir, that sche conseyuede, `and childide a sone.

Booz épousa donc Ruth, elle devint sa compagne et il cohabita avec elle. L’Eternel accorda à Ruth le bonheur de devenir mère: elle mit au monde un fils.

14 And wymmen seiden to Noemy, Blessid be the Lord, which `suffride not, that an eir failide to thi meynee, and his name were clepid in Israel;

Alors les femmes dirent à Noémi: "Loué soit l’Eternel qui, dès ce jour, ne te laisse plus manquer d’un défenseur! Puisse son nom être illustre en Israël!

15 and that thou haue `a man, that schal coumforte thi soule, and nursche elde age. For a child is borun of thi douytir in lawe, `which child schal loue thee, and he is myche betere to thee, than if thou haddist seuene sones.

Puisse-t-il devenir le consolateur de ton âme, l’appui de ta vieillesse, puisqu’aussi bien c’est ta bru qui l’a mis au monde, elle qui t’aime tant et qui est meilleure pour toi que sept fils!"

16 And Noemy puttide the child resseyued in hir bosum; and sche dide the office of a nurische, and of a berere.

Noémi prit le nouveau-né, le mit sur son giron et se chargea de lui donner ses soins.

17 Forsothe wymmen neiyboris thankiden hir, and seiden, A sone is borun to Noemy, and clepide his name Obeth. This is the fadir of Ysay, fadir of Dauid.

Et les voisines désignèrent l’enfant en disant: "Un fils est né à Noémi." Et elles l’appelèrent Obed. Celui-ci devint le père de Jessé, père de David.

18 These ben the generaciouns of Fares; Fares gendride Esrom;

Or, voici quels furent les descendants de Péréç: Péréç engendra Héçron;

19 Esrom gendride Aram; Aram gendride Amynadab;

Héçron engendra Râm et Râm engendra Amminadab;

20 Amynadab gendride Naason; Naason gendride Salmon; Salmon gendride Booz;

Amminadab engendra Nahchon et Nahchon engendra Salmâ;

21 Booz gendride Obeth;

Salmâ engendra Booz et Booz engendra Obed;

22 Obeth gendride Isay; Isay gendride Dauid the kyng.

Obed engendra Jessé, et Jessé engendra David.
