< Psalms 88 >

1 The song of salm, to the sones of Chore, to victorie on Mahalat, for to answere, the lernyng of Heman Ezraite. Lord God of myn helthe; Y criede in dai and nyyt bifore thee.
A Canticle Psalm to the sons of Korah. Unto the end. For Mahalath, to answer the understanding of Heman the Ezrahite. O Lord, God of my salvation: I have cried out, day and night, in your presence.
2 Mi preier entre bifore thi siyt; bowe doun thin eere to my preier.
Let my prayer enter in your sight. Incline your ear to my petition.
3 For my soule is fillid with yuels; and my lijf neiyede to helle. (Sheol h7585)
For my soul has been filled with evils, and my life has drawn near to Hell. (Sheol h7585)
4 I am gessid with hem that goon doun in to the lake; Y am maad as a man with outen help,
I am considered to be among those who will descend into the pit. I have become like a man without assistance,
5 and fre among deed men. As men woundid slepinge in sepulcris, of whiche men noon is myndeful aftir; and thei ben put awei fro thin hond.
idle among the dead. I am like the wounded sleeping in sepulchers, whom you no longer remember, and who have been repelled by your hand.
6 Thei han put me in the lower lake; in derke places, and in the schadewe of deth.
They have lain me in the lower pit: in dark places and in the shadow of death.
7 Thi strong veniaunce is confermed on me; and thou hast brouyt in alle thi wawis on me.
Your fury has been confirmed over me. And you have brought all your waves upon me.
8 Thou hast maad fer fro me my knowun; thei han set me abhomynacioun to hem silf. I am takun, and Y yede not out;
You have sent my acquaintances far from me. They have set me as an abomination to themselves. I was handed over, yet I did not depart.
9 myn iyen weren sijk for pouert. Lord, Y criede to thee; al dai Y spredde abrood myn hondis to thee.
My eyes languished before destitution. All day long, I cried out to you, O Lord. I stretched out my hands to you.
10 Whethir thou schalt do merueils to deed men; ether leechis schulen reise, and thei schulen knouleche to thee?
Will you perform wonders for the dead? Or will physicians raise to life, and so confess to you?
11 Whether ony man in sepulcre schal telle thi merci; and thi treuthe in perdicioun?
Could anyone declare your mercy in the sepulcher, or your truth from within perdition?
12 Whether thi merueilis schulen be knowun in derknessis; and thi riytfulnesse in the lond of foryetyng?
Will your wonders be known in the darkness, or your justice in the land of oblivion?
13 And, Lord, Y criede to thee; and erli my preier schal bifor come to thee.
And I have cried out to you, O Lord, and in early morning, my prayer will come before you.
14 Lord, whi puttist thou awei my preier; turnest awei thi face fro me?
Lord, why do you reject my prayer? Why do you turn your face away from me?
15 I am pore, and in traueils fro my yongthe; sotheli Y am enhaunsid, and Y am maad low, and disturblid.
I am poor, and I have been amid hardships from my youth. And, though I have been exalted, I am humbled and disturbed.
16 Thi wraththis passiden on me; and thi dredis disturbliden me.
Your wrath has crossed into me, and your terrors have disturbed me.
17 Thei cumpassiden me as watir al dai; thei cumpassiden me togidere.
They have surrounded me like water, all day long. They have surrounded me, all at once.
18 Thou madist fer fro me a frend and neiybore; and my knowun fro wretchidnesse.
Friend and neighbor, and my acquaintances, you have sent far away from me, away from misery.
