Proverbs 30
1 The wordis of hym that gaderith, of the sone spuynge. The prophesie which a man spak, with whom God was, and which man was coumfortid bi God dwellyng with hym,
Paroles d'Agur, fils de Jakeh, la révélation: l'homme dit à Ithiel, à Ithiel et Ucal:
2 and seide, Y am the moost fool of men; and the wisdom of men is not with me.
« Certes, je suis l'homme le plus ignorant, et n'ont pas la compréhension d'un homme.
3 Y lernede not wisdom; and Y knew not the kunnyng of hooli men.
Je n'ai pas appris la sagesse, je n'ai pas non plus la connaissance du Saint.
4 Who stiede in to heuene, and cam doun? Who helde togidere the spirit in hise hondis? who bonde togidere watris as in a cloth? Who reiside alle the endis of erthe? What is name of hym? and what is the name of his sone, if thou knowist?
Qui est monté au ciel, et qui est descendu? Qui a rassemblé le vent dans ses poings? Qui a lié les eaux dans son vêtement? Qui a établi toutes les extrémités de la terre? Quel est son nom, et quel est le nom de son fils, si vous le savez?
5 Ech word of God is a scheld set a fiere, to alle that hopen in hym.
« Toute parole de Dieu est sans défaut. Il est un bouclier pour ceux qui se réfugient en lui.
6 Adde thou not ony thing to the wordis of hym, and thou be repreued, and be foundun a liere.
N'ajoutez pas à ses paroles, de peur qu'il ne te réprimande et que tu ne sois trouvé menteur.
7 I preiede thee twei thingis; denye not thou to me, bifor that Y die.
« Je vous demande deux choses. Ne me renie pas avant que je ne meure.
8 Make thou fer fro me vanyte and wordis of leesyng; yyue thou not to me beggery and richessis; yyue thou oneli necessaries to my lijflode;
Éloigne de moi la fausseté et le mensonge. Ne me donnez ni pauvreté ni richesse. Nourris-moi de la nourriture qui m'est nécessaire,
9 lest perauenture Y be fillid, and be drawun to denye, and seie, Who is the Lord? and lest Y compellid bi nedynesse, stele, and forswere the name of my God.
de peur que je ne sois rassasié, que je ne vous renie et que je ne dise: « Qui est Yahvé? ». ou de peur que je sois pauvre et que je vole, et ainsi déshonorer le nom de mon Dieu.
10 Accuse thou not a seruaunt to his lord, lest perauenture he curse thee, and thou falle doun.
« Ne calomnie pas un serviteur devant son maître, de peur qu'il ne vous maudisse et que vous soyez jugé coupable.
11 A generacioun that cursith his fadir, and that blessith not his modir.
Il y a une génération qui maudit son père, et ne bénit pas leur mère.
12 A generacioun that semeth cleene to it silf, and netheles is not waischun fro hise filthis.
Il y a une génération qui est pure à ses propres yeux, mais ne sont pas lavés de leurs souillures.
13 A generacioun whose iyen ben hiy, and the iye liddis therof ben reisid in to hiy thingis.
Il y a une génération, ô combien hautaine est leur regard! Leurs paupières sont relevées.
14 A generacioun that hath swerdis for teeth, and etith with hise wank teeth; that it ete nedi men of erthe, and the porails of men.
Il y a une génération dont les dents sont comme des épées, et leurs mâchoires comme des couteaux, pour dévorer les pauvres de la terre, et les nécessiteux d'entre les hommes.
15 The watir leche hath twei douytris, seiynge, Brynge, bringe. Thre thingis ben vnable to be fillid, and the fourthe, that seith neuere, It suffisith;
« La sangsue a deux filles: « Donne, donne. « Il y a trois choses qui ne sont jamais satisfaites; quatre qui ne disent pas « Assez! »:
16 helle, and the mouth of the wombe, and the erthe which is neuere fillid with water; but fier seith neuere, It suffisith. (Sheol h7585)
Sheol, l'utérus stérile, la terre qui ne se contente pas d'eau, et le feu qui ne dit pas: « Assez! ». (Sheol h7585)
17 Crowis of the stronde picke out thilke iye, that scorneth the fadir, and that dispisith the child beryng of his modir; and the briddis of an egle ete that iye.
« L'œil qui se moque de son père, et méprise l'obéissance à sa mère, les corbeaux de la vallée le ramasseront, les jeunes aigles le mangeront.
18 Thre thingis ben hard to me, and outirli Y knowe not the fourthe thing;
« Il y a trois choses qui sont trop étonnantes pour moi, quatre que je ne comprends pas:
19 the weye of an egle in heuene, the weie of a serpent on a stoon, the weie of a schip in the myddil of the see, and the weie of a man in yong wexynge age.
La voie de l'aigle dans les airs, le chemin d'un serpent sur un rocher, le chemin d'un navire au milieu de la mer, et le chemin d'un homme avec une jeune fille.
20 Siche is the weie of a womman auowtresse, which etith, and wipith hir mouth, and seith, Y wrouyte not yuel.
« Ainsi va la femme adultère: Elle mange et s'essuie la bouche, et dit: « Je n'ai rien fait de mal.
21 The erthe is moued bi thre thingis, and the fourthe thing, which it may not susteyne;
« A cause de trois choses, la terre tremble, et en dessous de quatre, il ne peut pas supporter:
22 bi a seruaunt, whanne he regneth; bi a fool, whanne he is fillid with mete;
Pour un serviteur quand il est roi, un fou quand il est rempli de nourriture,
23 bi an hateful womman, whanne sche is takun in matrymonye; and bi an handmaide, whanne sche is eir of hir ladi.
pour une femme mal aimée quand elle est mariée, et une servante qui est l'héritière de sa maîtresse.
24 Foure ben the leeste thingis of erthe, and tho ben wisere than wise men;
« Il y a quatre choses qui sont peu de chose sur la terre, mais ils sont extrêmement sages:
25 amtis, a feble puple, that maken redi mete in heruest to hem silf;
Les fourmis ne sont pas un peuple fort, mais ils fournissent leur nourriture en été.
26 a hare, a puple vnmyyti, that settith his bed in a stoon;
Les hyrax ne sont qu'un peuple faible, mais ils font leurs maisons dans les rochers.
27 a locust hath no kyng, and al goith out bi cumpanyes; an euete enforsith with hondis,
Les sauterelles n'ont pas de roi, mais ils avancent en rangs.
28 and dwellith in the housis of kingis.
Tu peux attraper un lézard avec tes mains, pourtant, il est dans les palais des rois.
29 Thre thingis ben, that goon wel, and the fourthe thing, that goith richeli.
« Il y a trois choses qui sont majestueuses dans leur marche, quatre qui vont majestueusement:
30 A lioun, strongeste of beestis, schal not drede at the meetyng of ony man;
Le lion, qui est le plus puissant des animaux, et ne se détourne pour aucun;
31 a cok gird the leendis, and a ram, and noon is that schal ayenstonde him.
le lévrier; la chèvre mâle; et le roi contre lequel on ne peut s'élever.
32 He that apperith a fool, aftir that he is reisid an hiy; for if he hadde vndurstonde, he hadde sett hond on his mouth.
« Si vous avez fait une folie en vous élevant, ou si vous avez eu de mauvaises pensées, mets ta main sur ta bouche.
33 Forsothe he that thristith strongli teetis, to drawe out mylk, thristith out botere; and he that smytith greetli, drawith out blood; and he that stirith iris, bringith forth discordis.
Car, comme le barattage du lait produit du beurre, et le tordage du nez produit du sang, ainsi le forçage de la colère produit des querelles. »
