Numbers 25
1 Forsothe in that tyme Israel dwellide in Sechym; and the puple dide fornycacioun with the douytris of Moab;
Israël s’établit à Chittîm. Là, le peuple se livra à la débauche avec les filles de Moab.
2 whiche douytris clepiden hem to her sacrifices, and thei eten, and worschipiden the goddis of tho douytris;
Elles convièrent le peuple à leurs festins idolâtres; et le peuple mangea, et il se prosterna devant leurs dieux.
3 and Israel made sacrifice to Belphegor. And the Lord was wrooth,
Israël se prostitua à Baal-Peor et le courroux du Seigneur s’alluma contre Israël.
4 and seide to Moises, Take thou alle the princes of the puple, and hange hem ayens the sunne in iebatis, that my wodnesse, `that is stronge veniaunce, be turned awai fro Israel.
Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: "Prends tous les chefs du peuple et fais-les pendre au nom du Seigneur, à la face du soleil, pour que la colère divine se détourne d’Israël."
5 And Moises seide to the iugis of Israel, Ech man sle his neiyboris, that maden sacrifice to Belphagor.
Et Moïse dit aux juges d’Israël: "Que chacun de vous immole ceux des siens qui se sont livrés à Baal-Peor!
6 And, lo! oon of the sones of Israel entride bifor his britheren to `an hoore of Madian, in the siyt of Moises, and al the cumpeny of the sones of Israel, whiche wepten bifor the yatis of the tabernacle.
Cependant, quelqu’un des Israélites s’avança, amenant parmi ses frères la Madianite, à la vue de Moïse, à la vue de toute la communauté des enfants d’Israël, qui pleuraient au seuil de la tente d’assignation.
7 And whanne Phynees, the sone of Eleazar, sone of Aaron, preest, hadde seyn this, he roos fro the myddis of the multitude; and whanne he hadde take a swerd,
A cette vue, Phinéas, fils d’Eléazar, fils d’Aaron le pontife, se leva du milieu de la communauté, arma sa main d’une lance,
8 he entride aftir the man of Israel in to the `hoore hows, and stikide thorou both togidere, that is, the man and the womman, in the places of gendryng. And the veniaunce ceesside fro the sones of Israel,
entra, sur les pas de l’Israélite, dans la tente, et les perça tous deux, l’Israélite ainsi que cette femme, qu’il frappa au flanc; et le fléau cessa de sévir parmi les enfants d’Israël.
9 and foure and twenti thousand of men weren slayn.
Ceux qui avaient péri par suite du fléau étaient au nombre de vingt-quatre mille.
10 And the Lord seide to Moises,
L’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:
11 Fynees, the sone of Eleazar, sone of Aaron, preest, turnede away myn yre fro the sones of Israel; for he was stirid ayens hem bi my feruent loue, that Y my silf schulde not do awai the sones of Israel in my greet hete, `ether strong veniaunce.
"Phinéas, fils d’Eléazar, fils d’Aaron le pontife, a détourné ma colère de dessus les enfants d’Israël, en se montrant jaloux de ma cause au milieu d’eux, en sorte que je n’ai pas anéanti les enfants d’Israël, dans mon indignation.
12 Therfor speke thou to hym, Lo! Y yyue to hym the pees of my couenaunt,
C’Est pourquoi, tu annonceras que je lui accorde mon alliance amicale.
13 and it schal be an euerlastynge couenaunt of preesthod, as wel to hym silf as to his seed; for he louyde feruentli for his God, and he clenside the greet trespas of the sones of Israel.
Lui et sa postérité après lui posséderont, comme gage d’alliance, le sacerdoce à perpétuité; parce qu’il a pris parti pour son Dieu et procuré expiation aux enfants d’Israël."
14 Forsothe the name of the man of Israel, that was slayn with the womman of Madian, was Zambri, the sone of Salu, duyk of the kynrede and lynage of Symeon.
Or, le nom de l’Israélite frappé par lui, qui avait péri avec la Madianite, était Zimri, fils de Salou, chef d’une famille paternelle des Siméonites;
15 Forsothe the womman of Madian that was slayn togidere, was clepid Cobri, the douyter of Sur, the nobleste prince of Madianytis.
et la femme qui avait été frappée, la Madianite, se nommait Kozbi, fille de Cour, qui était chef des peuplades d’une famille paternelle de Madian.
16 And the Lord spak to Moises and seide,
L’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:
17 `Madianytis feele you enemyes, and smyte ye hem;
"Attaquez les Madianites et taillez-les en pièces!
18 for also thei diden enemyliche ayens you, and disseyueden thorow tresouns, bi the idol of Phegor, and bi `the douyter of Corbri, duyk of Madian, her sister, which douyter was sleyn in the dai of veniaunce, for the sacrilege of Phegor.
Car ils vous ont attaqués eux-mêmes, par les ruses qu’ils ont machinées contre vous au moyen de Peor, et au moyen de Kozbi, la fille du prince madianite, leur sœur, qui a été frappée, le jour de la mortalité, à cause de Peor."
