Numbers 23
1 And Balaam seide to Balaach, Bilde thou here to me seuene auteris, and make redi so many caluys, and rammes of the same noumbre.
Balaam dit à Balac: Elève-moi ici sept autels, et prépare ici sept bœufs et sept béliers.
2 And whanne he hadde do bi the word of Balaam, thei puttiden a calf and a ram to gidere on the auter.
Balac fit comme avait dit Balaam, et il sacrifia un bœuf et un bélier par autel.
3 And Balaam seide to Balaach, Stond thou a litil while bisidis thi brent sacrifice, while Y go, if in hap the Lord meete me; and Y schal `speke to thee what euer thing he schal comaunde.
Balaam dit encore à Balac: Reste auprès de tes victimes, et j'irai voir si Dieu se manifeste à moi; ce qu'il m'apprendra, je te le répèterai. Et Balac resta près des victimes.
4 And whanne he hadde go swiftli, God cam to hym; and Balaam spak to hym, and seide, Y reiside seuene auteris, and Y puttide a calf and a ram aboue.
Balaam alla donc interroger Dieu; il marcha droit devant lui, et Dieu lui apparut; Balaam dit à Dieu: J'ai préparé sept autels, et j'ai placé sur chaque autel un bœuf et un bélier.
5 Forsothe the Lord `puttide a word in his mouth, and seide, Turne ayen to Balaach, and thou schalt speke these thingis.
Alors, Dieu mit sa parole en la bouche de Balaam, et il lui dit: Quand tu seras de retour auprès de Balac, Voici ce que tu lui diras.
6 He turnede ayen, and fond Balach stondynge bisidis his brent sacrifice, and alle the princes of Moabitis.
Balaam retourna ensuite vers Balac; or, celui-ci se tenait auprès de ses holocaustes, avec tous les princes de Moab; et l'Esprit de Dieu vint en Balaam.
7 And whanne his parable `was takun, he seide, Balaach, the kyng of Moabitis, brouyte me fro Aran, fro the `hillis of the eest; and he seide, Come thou and curse Jacob; haaste thou, and greetli curse thou Israel.
Et Balaam, commençant son discours prophétique, dit: Balac, roi de Moab, m'a fait venir de la Mésopotamie et des montagnes de l'orient, et il m'a dit: Viens, fais des imprécations contre Jacob; maudis Israël.
8 How schal Y curse whom God cursid not? bi what resoun schal Y `haue abhomynable whom God `hath not abhomynable?
Pourquoi ferais-je des imprécations contre celui à qui le Seigneur ne veut point de mal? Pourquoi maudirais-je celui que Dieu ne maudit point?
9 Fro the hiyeste flyntis Y schal se hym, and fro litle hillis Y schal biholde hym; the puple schal dwelle aloone, and it schal not be arettid among hethene men.
Je le vois de ces montagnes, je l'aperçois du haut de ces collines: voici un peuple qui demeurera isolé, il ne sera point compté parmi les nations.
10 Who may noumbre the dust, that is, kynrede, of Jacob, and knowe the noumbre of the generacioun of Israel? My lijf die in the deeth of iust men, and my laste thingis be maad lijk hem!
Qui connaîtra la race de Jacob, et qui énumèrera les tribus d'Israël? Puisse mon âme mourir avec les âmes justes; puisse ma race être comme celle-là!
11 And Balaach seide to Balaam, What is this that thou doist? Y clepide thee, that thou schuldist curse myn enemyes, and ayenward thou blessist hem.
Balac dit alors à Balaam: Qu'as-tu fait? Je t'ai appelé pour que tu maudisses mes ennemis, et voilà que tu les bénis!
12 To whom Balaam answeride, Whether Y may speke othir thing no but that that the Lord comaundith?
Balaam répondit à Balac: Ne dois-je pas fidèlement répéter les paroles que Dieu a mises dans ma bouche?
13 Therfor Balaach seide to Balaam, Come with me in to anothir place, fro whennus thou se a part of Israel, and mayst not se al; fro thennus curse thou hym.
Balac répartit: Viens avec moi en un autre lieu d'où tu ne pourras voir tout ce peuple; tu en verras une part sans le voir tout entier; maudis-le de cet endroit.
14 And whanne he hadde led Balaam in to an hiy place, on the cop of the hil of Phasga, he bildide seuene auteris to Balaam, and whanne calues and rammes weren put aboue,
Et il l'emmena au plus haut du champ, sur le plateau d'un rocher, et il y éleva sept autels, et il plaça sur chaque autel un bœuf et un bélier.
15 he seide to Balaach, Stonde here bisidis thi brent sacrifice, while Y go.
Balaam dit à Balac: Reste auprès de tes victimes, je vais interroger Dieu.
16 And whanne the Lord hadde `come to him, and hadde put `a word in his mouth, he seide, Turne ayen to Balach, and thou schalt seie these thingis to hym.
Et Dieu vint à la rencontre de Balaam; il lui mit sa parole dans la bouche, et il lui dit: Retourne auprès de Balac; voici ce que tu lui diras.
17 He turnyde ayen, and foond Balach stondynge bisidis his brent sacrifice, and the princis of Moabitis with hym. To whom Balach seide, What spak the Lord?
Et Balaam retourna vers Balac, qui se tenait près de ses holocaustes, avec tous les princes de Moab. Balac lui dit: Que t'a dit le Seigneur?
18 And whanne his parable `was takun, he seide, Stonde, Balach, and herkene; here, thou sone of Sephor. God is not `as a man,
Et Balaam, commençant son discours prophétique, dit: Lève-toi, Balac, et écoute; écoute comme témoin, fils de Séphor:
19 that he lye, nethir he is as the sone of a man, that he be chaungid; therfor he seide, and schal he not do? he spak, and schal he not fulfille?
On ne tient pas Dieu en suspens comme l'homme; on ne le menace pas comme les fils de l'homme; lui qui a dit, ne fera-t-il pas? Il parlera: sa parole ne subsistera-t-elle pas?
20 Y am brouyt to blesse, Y may not forbede blessyng.
Quant à moi, il m'a choisi pour bénir, et je bénirai; rien ne m'en détournera.
21 Noon idol is in Jacob, nethir symylacre is seyn in Israel; his Lord God is with hym, and the sown of victorie of kyng is in hym.
Il n'y aura point de souffrance en Jacob, on ne verra point de douleur en Israël. Le Seigneur son Dieu est avec lui, la gloire de ses princes est en lui.
22 The Lord God ledde hym out of Egipt, whos strengthe is lijk an vnicorn;
C'est Dieu qui l'a tiré d'Egypte; sa gloire est comme celle de la licorne.
23 fals tellyng bi chiteryng of bryddis, `ethir idolatrie, is not in Jacob, nethir fals dyuynyng is in Israel. In his tymes it schal be seide to Jacob and Israel, What the Lord hath wrought!
Il n'y a point d'augures en Jacob, il n'y a point d'art divinatoire en Israël; au temps voulu Jacob entendra la parole, Israël entendra ce que Dieu doit accomplir.
24 Lo! the puple schal rise to gidere as a lionesse, and schal be reisid as a lioun; the lioun schal not reste, til he deuoure prey, and drynke the blood of hem that ben slayn.
Son peuple se lèvera comme un lionceau; il s'exaltera comme un lion; il ne dormira point qu'il n'ait dévoré sa proie et bu le sang du carnage.
25 And Balach seide to Balaam, Nether curse thou, nether blesse thou hym.
Et Balac dit à Balaam: Si tu n'as pu les maudire, du moins ne les bénis pas.
26 And he seide, Whether Y seide not to thee, that what euer thing that God comaundide to me, Y wolde do this?
Balaam répondit à Balac: Ne t'ai-je point dit: La parole que me dira le Seigneur, je la répèterai?
27 And Balach seide to hym, Come, and Y schal lede thee to an other place, if in hap it plesith God that fro thennus thou curse hym.
Et Balac dit à Balaam: Viens, je vais t'emmener ailleurs, pour voir si la du moins il plaira à Dieu que tu les maudisses.
28 And whanne Balaach hadde led hym out on the `cop of the hil of Phegor, that biholdith the wildirnesse,
Balac emmena Balaam sur la cime de Phégor, qui s'étend vers le désert.
29 Balaam seide to hym, Bilde here seuene auteris to me, and make redi so many caluys, and rammes of the same noumbre.
Et Balaam dit à Balac: Elève-moi ici sept autels, et prépare-moi sept bœufs et sept béliers.
30 Balaach dide as Balaam seide, and he puttide caluys and rammes, bi alle auteris.
Balac fit comme avait dit Balaam, et il sacrifia un bœuf et un bélier par autel.
