Numbers 22
1 And thei yeden forth, and settiden tentis in the feeldi places of Moab, where Jerico is set ouer Jordan.
Et étant partis, ils campèrent dans les plaines de Moab, vis-à-vis de l’endroit où est situé Jéricho, au-delà du Jourdain.
2 Forsothe Balach, the sone of Sephor, siy alle thingis whiche Israel hadde do to Ammorrei,
Or, Balac, fils de Séphor, voyant tout ce qu’avait fait Israël à l’Amorrhéen:
3 and that men of Moab `hadden dred Israel, and miyten not bere the assailing of him.
Que les Moabites le craignaient extrêmement, et qu’ils ne pourraient en soutenir l’attaque,
4 And he seide to the grettere men in birthe of Madian, So this puple schal do a wei alle men that dwellen in oure coostis, as an oxe is wont to do awei an eerbe `til to the rootis. Forsothe he, `that is, Balaac, was kyng in that tyme in Moab.
Dit aux enfants de Madian: Ce peuple détruira tous ceux qui demeurent à nos confins, de la même manière que le bœuf broute les herbes jusqu’aux racines. C’est lui qui était en ce temps-là roi de Moab.
5 Therfor he sente messangeris to Balaam, the sone of Beor, a fals diuynour, that dwellide on the flood of the lond of the sones of Amon, that thei schulden clepe hym, and schulden seie, Lo! a puple yede out of Egipt, `which puple hilide the face of erthe, and sittith ayens me.
Il envoya donc des messagers à Balaam, fils de Béor, devin, qui habitait sur le fleuve du pays des enfants d’Ammon, pour l’appeler et lui dire: Voilà qu’un peuple est sorti de l’Egypte; il a couvert la surface de la terre, campé vis-à-vis de moi.
6 Therfor come thou, and curse this puple, which is strongere than Y, if in ony maner Y may smyte and dryue hym out of my lond; for Y knowe, that he is blissid whom thou blissist, and he is cursid whom thou hast cursid.
Viens donc, et maudis ce peuple, parce qu’il est plus fort que moi: si par quelque moyen je pourrais le battre et le chasser de ma terre: car je sais que sera béni celui que tu béniras, et maudit celui sur qui tu accumuleras les malédictions.
7 The eldere men of Moab and the grettere men in birthe of Madian yeden forth, hauynge in hondis the prijs of fals dyuynyng; and whanne thei hadden come to Balaam, and hadden teld to hym alle the wordis of Balaach, he answeride,
Ainsi, les vieillards de Moab et les anciens de Madian allèrent, ayant le prix de la divination dans leurs mains. Or, lorsqu’ils furent venus auprès de Balaam, et qu’ils lui eurent raconté toutes les paroles de Balac,
8 Dwelle ye here to nyyt, and Y schal answere what euer thing the Lord schal seie to me. Sotheli while thei dwelliden at Balaam, God cam, and seide to hym,
Balaam répondit: Demeurez ici cette nuit, et je vous répondrai tout ce que m’aura dit le Seigneur. Ceux-ci demeurant chez Balaam and no_verset=Dieu vint et lui dit:
9 What wolen these men at thee `to hem silf?
Que signifient ces hommes chez toi?
10 Balaam answeride, Balaach, the sone of Sephor, kyng of Moabitis, sente to me, and seide, Lo!
Il répondit: Balac, fils de Séphor, roi des Moabites, a envoyé vers moi,
11 a puple which is gon out of Egipt hilide the face of erthe; come thou, and curse hem, if in ony maner Y may fiyte, and dryue hym awey.
Disant: Voilà qu’un peuple, qui est sorti de l’Egypte, a couvert la surface de la terre: viens et maudis-le: si par quelque moyen je pouvais, en le combattant, le chasser.
12 And God seide to Balaam, Nyle thou go with hem, nether curse thou the puple, for it is blessid.
Et Dieu dit à Balaam: Ne va pas avec eux, et ne maudis pas ce peuple, parce qu’il est béni,
13 Which Balaam roos eerli, and seide to the princes, Go ye in to youre lond, for God forbeed me to come with you.
Balaam s’étant levé le matin, dit aux princes: Allez en votre terre, parce que le Seigneur m’a défendu d’aller avec vous.
14 The princes turneden ayen, and seiden to Balaach, Balaam nolde come with vs.
Etant retournés, les princes dirent à Balac: Balaam n’a pas voulu venir avec nous.
15 Eft Balaach sente many mo and noblere men, than he hadde sent bifore;
Balac envoya de nouveau des messagers beaucoup plus nombreux et plus nobles que ceux qu’il avait d’abord envoyés.
16 whiche seiden, whanne thei hadden come to Balaam, Balaach, the sone of Sephor, seith thus, Tarye thou not to come to me, redi to onoure thee;
Lorsqu’ils furent venus chez Balaam, ils dirent: Ainsi dit Balac, fils de Séphor: Ne tarde pas à venir vers moi;
17 and what euer thing thou wolt, Y schal yyue to thee; come thou, and curse this puple.
Je suis prêt à t’honorer, et tout ce que tu voudras, je te le donnerai; viens, et maudis ce peuple.
18 Balaam answeride, Thouy Balaach schal yyue to me his howsful of siluer and of gold, Y schal not mowe chaunge the word of my God, that Y speke ethir more ethir lesse.
Balaam répondit: Si Balac me donnait sa maison pleine d’argent et d’or, je ne pourrais changer la parole du Seigneur mon Dieu, pour dire plus ou moins.
19 Y biseche, that ye dwelle here also in this nyyt, that Y may wite what the Lord schal answere eft to me.
Je demande instamment que vous demeuriez ici encore cette nuit, et que je puisse savoir ce que le Seigneur me répondra de nouveau.
20 Therfor the Lord cam to Balaam in the nyyt, and seide to hym, If these men comen to clepe thee, rise thou, and go with hem, so oneli that thou do that that Y schal comaunde to thee.
Dieu vint donc vers Balaam pendant la nuit, et lui dit: Si ces hommes sont venus t’appeler, lève-toi, et va avec eux, en sorte seulement que tu fasses ce que je t’ordonnerai.
21 Balaam roos eerli, and whanne his femal asse was sadelid, he yede forth with hem.
Balaam se leva le matin, et, son ânesse préparée, il partit avec eux.
22 And God was wrooth. And the `aungel of the Lord stood in the weie ayens Balam, that sat on the femal asse, and hadde twei children with hym.
Alors Dieu fut irrité; et l’ange du Seigneur se tint sur la voie en face de Balaam, qui était monté sur son ânesse, et avait deux serviteurs avec lui.
23 The femal asse siy the aungel stondynge in the weie, with swerd drawun, and `turnede a wei hir silf fro the weie, and yede bi the feeld. And whanne Balaam beet hir, and wolde lede ayen to the path,
L ânesse voyant l’ange qui se tenait sur la voie, son épée tirée du fourreau, se détourna du chemin, et elle allait à travers les champs. Comme Balaam la frappait, et voulait la ramener dans le sentier,
24 the aungel stood in the streitnessis of twei wallis, with whiche the vyneris weren cumpassid.
L’ange se tint dans le défilé de deux murailles, dont les vignes étaient entourées.
25 And the femal asse siy the aungel, and ioynede hir silf to the wal, and hurtlide the foot of the sittere; and he beet eft `the asse.
L’ânesse le voyant, se pressa contre le mur, et froissa le pied de celui qui la montait. Mais Balaam la frappait de nouveau;
26 And neuer the lesse the aungel yede to the streit place, where me `myyte not go out of the weie, nether to the riyt side nether to the left side, and stood ayens hym.
Et néanmoins l’ange, passant dans un lieu plus étroit, où elle ne pouvait dévier ni à droite, ni à gauche, s’arrêta à sa rencontre.
27 And whanne the femal asse siy the aungel stondynge, sche felde doun vndir the feet of the sittere, which was wrooth ful greetli, and beet hir sidis with a staaf.
Or, lorsque l’ânesse vit l’ange arrêté, elle tomba sous les pieds de celui qui la montait; Balaam irrité, lui frappait plus fort les flancs avec son bâton.
28 And the Lord openyde the `mouth of the femal asse, and sche spak, What have Y doon to thee? whi smytist thou me, lo! now the thridde tyme?
Alors le Seigneur ouvrit la bouche de l’ânesse, et elle dit: Que vous ai-je fait? Pourquoi me frappez-vous? Voilà déjà trois fois!
29 Balaam answeride, For thou hast disserued, and hast scornyd me; Y wolde that Y hadde a swerd to sle thee.
Balaam répondit: Parce que tu l’as mérité, et que tu t’es jouée de moi: plût à Dieu que j’eusse un glaive, pour te frapper!
30 And the femal asse seide, Whether Y am not thi beeste on which thou were wont to sitte euere til in to this present dai? seie thou, what lijk thing Y dide euere to thee? And he seide, Neuere.
L’ânesse répliqua: Ne suis-je pas votre animal, sur lequel vous avez toujours accoutumé de monter jusqu’au présent jour? dites si je vous ai jamais fait quelque chose de semblable; or Balaam répondit: Jamais.
31 Anoon the Lord openyde `the iyen of Balaam, and he siy the aungel stondynge in the weie, holdynge a drawun swerd in the hoond; and Balaam worschipide hym lowli in to erthe.
Aussitôt Dieu ouvrit les yeux de Balaam, et il vit l’ange qui se tenait sur la voie, son épée tirée du fourreau, et il l’adora incliné vers la terre.
32 To whom the aungel seide, Whi `betist thou thi femal asse `the thridde tyme? Y cam to be aduersarie to thee, for thi weie is weiward, and contrarye to me;
Et l’ange à Balaam: Pourquoi, dit-il, as-tu frappé trois fois ton ânesse? Moi, je suis venu pour m’opposer à toi, parce que ta voie est perverse, et qu’elle m’est contraire:
33 and if the femal asse hadde not bowid a wey fro the weie, and youe place to ayenstondere, Y hadde slayn thee, and sche schulde lyue.
Et si l’ânesse ne se fût détournée, cédant la place à celui qui lui résistait, je t’aurais tué, et elle, elle vivrait.
34 Balaam seide, Y synnede, not witynge that thou stodist ayens me; and now, if it displesith thee that Y go, Y schal turne ayen.
Balaam répondit: J’ai péché, ne sachant pas que c’était vous qui vous teniez là contre moi: mais maintenant, s’il vous déplait que j’aille, je retournerai.
35 The aungel seide, Go thou with these men, but be war that thou speke not other thing than Y schal comaunde to thee. Therfor Balaam yede with the princes.
L’ange reprit: Va avec eux, et prends garde de dire autre chose que ce que je t’ordonnerai. Il alla donc avec les princes.
36 And whanne Balaach hadde herde this, he yede out in to the comyng of hym, in the citee of Moabitis, whiche is set in the laste coostis of Arnon.
Ce que Balac ayant appris, il sortit à sa rencontre jusqu’à une ville des Moabites qui est située aux derniers confins d’Arnon.
37 And he seide to Balaam, Y sente messangeris to clepe thee; whi camest thou not anoon to me? whethir for Y may not yelde meede to thi comyng?
Et il dit à Balaam: J’ai envoyé des messagers, pour t’appeler; pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu aussitôt vers moi? Est-ce parce que je ne puis pas donner une récompense à ton arrivée?
38 To whom Balaam answeride, Lo! Y am present, whethir Y schal mow speke other thing than that, that God schal putte in my mouth?
Balaam lui répondit: Me voici: est-ce que je pourrai dire autre chose que ce que Dieu mettra en ma bouche?
39 Therfor thei yeden forth to gidere, and camen in to a citee, which was in the laste coost of `his rewme.
Ils s’en allèrent donc ensemble, et ils vinrent dans une ville qui était aux derniers confins de son royaume.
40 And whanne Balaach hadde slayn scheep and oxun, he sente yiftis to Balaam and the princes that weren with hym.
Or, lorsque Balac eut tué des bœufs et des brebis, il envoya à Balaam et aux princes qui étaient avec lui des présents.
41 Forsothe whanne the morewtid was maad, Balaach ledde Balaam to the hiye placis of Baal, and he bihelde the laste part of the puple, `that is, al the oost til to the laste part.
Mais, le matin venu, il le conduisit sur les hauts lieux de Baal, et Balaam vit la partie du peuple qui était aux extrémités.
