Numbers 21
1 And whanne Chananei, the kyng of Arad, that dwellide at the south, hadde herd this, that is, that Israel cam bi the weye of aspieris, he fauyt ayens hem; and Chananei was ouercomere and ledde pray of Israel.
El rey cananeo de Arad, que vivía en el Néguev, se enteró de que los israelitas se acercaban por el camino de Atharim. Fue y atacó a Israel y tomó a algunos de ellos prisioneros.
2 And Israel bounde hym sylf bi avow to the Lord, and seide, If thou schalt bitake this puple in myn hond, Y schal do awei `the citees therof.
Así que Israel hizo una promesa solemne al Señor: “Si nos entregas a esta gente, nos comprometemos a destruir completamente sus pueblos”.
3 And the Lord herde the preieris of Israel, and bitook the Chananey; and Israel killid hym, and distruyede hise citees; and clepide the name of that place Horma, that is, cursyng, `ethir hangyng up.
El Señor respondió a su invitación y les entregó a los cananeos. Los israelitas los destruyeron completamente a ellos y a sus pueblos, y llamaron al lugar Horma.
4 `Forsothe thei yeden forth also fro the hil of Hor, bi the weie that ledith to the reed see, that thei schulden cumpasse the lond of Edom; and it bigan to anoye the puple, of the weie and trauel.
Los israelitas dejaron el Monte Hor por el camino que lleva al Mar Rojo para evitar viajar por el país de Edom. Pero el pueblo se puso de mal humor en el camino
5 And the puple spak ayens the Lord and Moises, and seide, Whi leddist thou vs out of Egipt, that we schulden die in wildirnesse? breed failith, watris ben not; oure soule wlatith now on this `meete moost liyt.
y se quejó contra Dios y contra Moisés, diciendo: “¿Por qué nos sacaste de Egipto para morir en el desierto? No tenemos ni pan ni agua, y odiamos esta horrible comida!”
6 Wherfor the Lord sente `firid serpentis in to the puple; at the woundis of whiche serpentis, and the dethis of ful many men,
Así que el Señor envió serpientes venenosas para atacarlos, y muchos israelitas fueron mordidos y murieron.
7 thei camen to Moyses, and seiden, We synneden, for we spaken ayens the Lord and thee; preie thou, that he take awey fro vs the serpentis.
El pueblo fue a ver a Moisés y le dijo: “Nos equivocamos al presentar quejas contra el Señor y contra ti. Por favor, ruega al Señor que nos quite las serpientes de encima”. Moisés rezó al Señor en su nombre.
8 And Moises preiede for the puple; and the Lord seide to hym, Make thou a serpent of bras, and sette thou it for a signe; he that is smytun and biholdith it, schal lyue.
El Señor le dijo a Moisés: “Haz una maqueta de una serpiente y ponla en un palo. Cuando alguien que haya sido mordido la mire, vivirá”.
9 Therfor Moyses made a serpent of bras, and settide for a signe; and men smytun and biholdynge it, weren heelid.
Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la puso en un poste. Aquellos que la miraron vivieron.
10 And the sones of Israel yeden forth,
Los israelitas salieron y acamparon en Obot.
11 and settiden tentis in Oboth; fro whennus thei yeden forth, and settiden tentis in Neabarym, in the wildirnesse, that biholdith Moab, ayens the eest coost.
Luego se fueron de Obot y acamparon en Iye-abarim en el desierto en el lado este de Moab.
12 And thei moueden fro thennus, and camen to the stronde of Zareth;
Se fueron de allí y acamparon en el Valle de Zered.
13 which thei leften, and settiden tentis ayens Arnon, which is in the deseert, and apperith in the coostis of Amorrei. Forsothe Arnon is the terme of Moab, and departith Moabitis and Ammoreis.
Luego se trasladaron de allí y acamparon en el lado más alejado del río Arnón, en el desierto cerca del territorio de Amorite. El río Arnón es la frontera entre Moab y los amorreos.
14 Wherfor it is seid in the book of batels of the Lord, As he dide in the reed see, so he schal do in the strondis of Arnon;
Por eso el Libro de las Guerras del Señor se refiere “al pueblo de Vaheb en Sufa y al barranco de Arnón,
15 the harde rochis of the strondis weren bowid, that tho schulen reste in Arnon, and schulden ligge in the coostis of Moabitis.
a las laderas del barranco que llegan al pueblo de Ar que está en la frontera con Moab”.
16 Fro that place the pit apperide, of which the Lord spak to Moyses, Gadere thou the puple, and Y schal yyue watir to it.
Desde allí se trasladaron a Beer, el pozo donde el Señor le dijo a Moisés, “Haz que el pueblo se reúna para que pueda darles agua”.
17 Thanne Israel soong this song, The pit stie;
Entonces los israelitas cantaron esta canción: “¡Echen agua en el pozo! ¡Cada uno de ustedes, cante!
18 thei sungen togidere, The pit which the princes diggiden, and the duykis of the multitude maden redi, in the yyuere of the lawe, and in her stauys. And thei yeden forth fro the wildirnesse to Mathana,
Los jefes de las tribus cavaron el pozo; sí, los jefes del pueblo cavaron el pozo con sus varas de autoridad y sus bastones”. Los israelitas dejaron el desierto y siguieron hasta Matanaá
19 fro Mathana to Naaliel, fro Naaliel in to Bamoth;
Desde Mataná viajaron a Nahaliel, de Nahaliel a Bamot,
20 Bamoth is a valey in the cuntrey of Moab, in the cop of Phasga, that biholdith ayens the deseert.
y de Bamoth al valle en el territorio de Moab donde la cima del Monte Pisga mira hacia los páramos.
21 Forsothe Israel sente messangeris to Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, and seide,
Entonces Israel envió mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, con la siguiente petición:
22 Y biseche that it be leueful to me to passe thorou thi loond; we schulen not bowe in to the feeldis and vyneris; we schulen not drynke watris of pittis; we schulen go in the kyngis weie, til we passen thi termes.
“Por favor, permítanos viajar a través de su país. No cruzaremos ninguno de sus campos o viñedos, ni beberemos agua de ninguno de sus pozos. Permaneceremos en la Carretera del Rey hasta que hayamos pasado por su país”.
23 Which nolde graunte that Israel schulde passe thury hise coostis, but rather, whanne the oost was gaderid, he yede out ayens Israel, in to deseert. And he cam in to Yasa, and fauyt ayens Israel;
Pero Sehón se negó a permitir que los israelitas viajaran por su territorio. En su lugar, llamó a todo su ejército y salió al encuentro de los israelitas de frente en el desierto. Cuando llegó a Jahaz, atacó a los israelitas.
24 of whom he was smytun in the scharpnesse of swerd, and his lond was weldid fro Arnon `til to Jeboth and `the sones of Amon; for the termes of Amonytis weren holdun bi strong help.
Los israelitas los derrotaron, matándolos con sus espadas. Se apoderaron de su tierra desde el río Arnón hasta el río Jaboc, pero sólo hasta la frontera de los amonitas, porque estaba bien defendida.
25 Therfor Israel took alle `the citees of hym, and dwelliden in the citees of Amorrei, that is, in Esebon, and hise townes.
Los israelitas conquistaron todos los pueblos amorreos y se apoderaron de ellos, incluyendo Hesbón y sus pueblos vecinos.
26 The citee of Esebon was Seons, kyng of Ammorei, which Seon fauyt ayens the kyng of Moab, and took al the lond that was of his lordschip, `til to Arnon.
Hesbón era la capital de Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que había luchado contra el anterior rey de Moab y le había quitado todas sus tierras hasta el río Arnón.
27 Therfor it is seid in prouerbe, Come ye in to Esebon, be it bildid, and maad the citee of Seon;
Por eso los antiguos compositores escribieron: “¡Vengan a Hesbón y hagan que la reconstruyan; restauren la ciudad de Sehón!
28 fier yede out of Esebon, flawme yede out of the citee `ethir greet castel of Seon, and deuouryde Ar of Moabitis, and the dwelleris of the `hiye places of Arnon.
Porque un fuego salió de Hesbón, una llama de la ciudad de Sihón. Quemó a Ar en Moab, donde los gobernantes viven en las alturas de Arnón.
29 Moab, wo to thee! thou, puple of Chamos, perischidist; it yaf the sones therof in to fliyt, and the douytris in to caitifte to Seon, kyng of Ammoreis;
¡Qué desastre enfrentas, Moab! ¡Vais a morir todos, pueblo de Quemos! Entregaste a tus hijos como exiliados y a tus hijas como prisioneras a Sehón, rey de los amorreos.
30 the yok of hem perischide, fro Esebon `til to Dibon; the wery men camen in to Jophe, and `til to Medaba.
¡Pero ahora hemos derrotado a los amorreos! El gobierno de Heshbon ha sido destruido hasta Dibon. Los aniquilamos hasta Nofa y hasta Medeba”.
31 And so Israel dwellide in the lond of Ammorrey.
Los israelitas ocuparon el país de los amorreos.
32 And Moises sente men that schulden aspie Jaser, whos `townes thei token, and weldiden the dwelleris.
Moisés envió hombres a explorar Jazer. Los israelitas conquistaron los pueblos de los alrededores y expulsaron a los amorreos que vivían allí.
33 And thei turniden hem silf, and stieden bi the weie of Basan. And Og, the kyng of Basan, with al his puple cam ayens hem, to fiyte in Edray.
Luego continuaron en el camino hacia Basán. Og, rey de Basán, dirigió a todo su ejército para enfrentarse a ellos de frente, y luchó contra ellos en Edrei.
34 And the Lord seide to Moises, Drede thou not hym, for Y haue bitake hym, and al his loond, and puple, in thin hoond; and thou schalt do to hym as thou didist to Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, the dwellere of Esebon.
El Señor le dijo a Moisés: “No tienes que temerle, porque yo te lo he entregado, junto con todo su pueblo y su tierra. Hazle lo que hiciste con Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que gobernó desde Hesbón”.
35 Therfor thei smytiden `bothe hym with hise sones and al his puple, `til to deeth; and thei weldiden `the lond of hym.
Así que mataron a Og, a sus hijos y a todo su ejército. Nadie sobrevivió, y los israelitas se apoderaron de su país.
