Numbers 13
1 And there the Lord spak to Moises,
Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo Môi-se:
2 and seide, Sende thou men that schulen biholde the lond of Canaan, which Y schal yyue to the sones of Israel, of ech lynage o man of the princes.
“Con chọn trong số các nhà lãnh đạo, mỗi đại tộc một người, sai họ đi do thám Ca-na-an, đất Ta cho Ít-ra-ên.”
3 Moises dide that that the Lord comaundide, and sente fro the deseert of Pharan princes, men of whiche these ben the names.
Vậy từ hoang mạc Pha-ran, Môi-se cử họ ra đi, theo lệnh Chúa Hằng Hữu. Tất cả đều là những người lãnh đạo của người Ít-ra-ên.
4 Of the lynage of Ruben, Semmya, the sone of Zectur.
Đây là danh sách của họ: Đại tộc Ru-bên: Sam-mua, con của Xác-cua.
5 Of the lynage of Symeon, Saphat, the sone of Hury.
Đại tộc Si-mê-ôn: Sa-phát, con của Hô-ri.
6 Of the lynage of Juda, Caleph, the sone of Jephone.
Đại tộc Giu-đa: Ca-lép, con của Giê-phu-nê.
7 Of the lynage of Isachar, Igal, the sone of Joseph.

8 Of the lynage of Effraym, Osee, the sone of Nun.
Đại tộc Ép-ra-im: Ô-sê, con của Nun.
9 Of the lynage of Beniamyn, Phalti, the sone of Raphu.
Đại tộc Bên-gia-min: Phan-thi, con của Ra-phu.
10 Of the lynage of Zabulon, Gediel, the sone of Sodi.
Đại tộc Sa-bu-luân: Gát-đi-ên, con của Sô-đi.
11 Of the lynage of Joseph, of the gouernaunce of Manasses, Gaddi, the sone of Susy.

12 Of the lynage of Dan, Amyel, the sone of Gemalli.
Đại tộc Đan: A-mi-ên, con của Ghê-ma-li.
13 Of the lynage of Aser, Sur, the sone of Mychael.
Đại tộc A-se: Sê-thu, con của Mi-ca-ên.
14 Of the lynage of Neptalym, Nabdi, the sone of Napsi.
Đại tộc Nép-ta-li: Nách-bi, con của Vấp-si.
15 Of the lynage of Gad, Guel, the sone of Machi.
Đại tộc Gát: Gu-ên, con của Ma-ki.
16 These ben the names of men, which Moises sente to biholde the lond of Canaan; and he clepide Osee, the sone of Nun, Josue.
Đó là danh sách các thám tử Môi-se sai đi trinh sát xứ Ca-na-an. Ông đổi tên Ô-sê, con của Nun, thành Giô-suê.
17 Therfor Moises sente hem to biholde the lond of Canaan, and seide to hem, `Stie ye bi the south coost; and whanne ye comen to the hillis,
Môi-se dặn họ: “Các anh đi lên miền bắc ngang qua xứ Nê-ghép đến tận vùng đồi núi;
18 biholde ye the lond, what maner lond it is; and biholde ye the puple which is the dwellere therof, whether it is strong, ethir feble, `whether thei ben fewe in noumbre, ether manye;
xem thử địa thế ra sao, dân tình thế nào, đông hay thưa, mạnh hay yếu,
19 whether that lond is good, ethir yuel; what maner citees ben, wallid, ether without wallis;
đất tốt hay xấu, thành thị có hào lũy kiên cố hay trống trải,
20 whether the lond is fat, ether bareyn, `whether it is ful of woodis, ethir without trees. Be ye coumfortid, and `brynge ye to vs of the fruytis of that lond. Sotheli the tyme was, whanne grapis first ripe myyten be etun thanne.
đất đai màu mỡ hay khô cằn, có nhiều cây cối hay tiêu điều. Hãy cố gắng đem về một ít hoa quả, đừng ngại ngùng.” (Lúc ấy đúng vào mùa hái nho đầu màu.)
21 And whanne thei hadden stied, thei aspieden the lond, fro the deseert of Syn `til to Rohob, as men entryth to Emath.
Vậy, họ ra đi trinh sát đất này, từ hoang mạc Xin tới Rê-hốp, gần Lê-bô Ha-mát.
22 And thei stieden to the south, and camen in to Ebron, where Achyman, and Sisai, and Tholmai, the sones of Enach, weren; for Hebron was maad bi seuen yeer bifor Thamnys, the citee of Egipt.
Họ đi lên miền bắc, ngang qua xứ Nê-ghép tới Hếp-rôn, nơi con cháu A-nác là A-hi-man, Sê-sai, và Thanh-mai sinh sống. (Thành Hếp-rôn được xây trước Xô-an ở Ai Cập bảy năm.)
23 And thei yeden til to the stronde of clustre, and kittiden doun a sioun with his grape, which twei men baren in a barre; also thei token of pumgarnadis, and of the figis of that place which is clepid Nehelescol,
Họ đến thung lũng Ếch-côn, cắt một chùm nho, hai người phải dùng đòn mới khiêng nổi. Họ cũng hái mấy trái thạch lựu và trái vả đem về.
24 that is, the stronde of grape, for the sones of Israel baren a clustre fro thennus.
Thung lũng ấy được gọi là Ếch-côn, vì các thám tử Ít-ra-ên đã hái nho ở đó.
25 And the aspieris of the lond, whanne thei hadden cumpassid al the cuntrey, after fourti daies camen to Moises and Aaron,
Sau bốn mươi ngày do thám, họ trở về.
26 and to al the cumpany of the sones of Israel, in to the deseert of Pharan which is in Cades. And `the aspieris spaken to hem, and schewiden the fruytis of the lond to al the multitude, and telden,
Họ quay về với Môi-se, A-rôn, và toàn thể người Ít-ra-ên trong hoang mạc Pha-ran. Các thám tử báo cho họ và toàn thể người Ít-ra-ên và cho xem hoa quả trong xứ.
27 and seiden, We camen to the lond, to which thou sentest vs, which lond treuli flowith with mylk and hony, as it may be knowun bi these fruytis;
Họ báo với Môi-se: “Chúng tôi đã vào đất ấy theo lệnh ông sai bảo chúng tôi; thật là đất tràn đầy sữa và mật. Đây là hoa quả của xứ ấy.
28 but it hath strongeste inhabiteris, and grete cytees, and wallid; we sien there the kynrede of Anachym; Amalech dwellith in the south;
Tuy nhiên, dân ở đó rất cường tráng, thành thị rộng lớn, và hào lũy kiên cố. Ngoài ra, chúng tôi có thấy bọn khổng lồ, thuộc dòng dõi A-nác ở đó nữa.
29 Ethei, and Jebusei, and Amorey dwellen in the hilli placis; forsothe Cananey dwellith bisidis the see, and bisidis the floodis of Jordan.
Người A-ma-léc ở Nê-ghép, người Hê-tít, người Giê-bu, và người A-mô-rít ở vùng cao nguyên, còn người Ca-na-an ở miền biển và dọc theo Thung lũng Giô-đan.”
30 Among thes thingis Caleph peeside the grutchyng of the puple, that was maad ayens Moises, and seide, `Stie we, and welde we the lond, for we moun gete it.
Ca-lép lên tiếng để trấn an dân chúng đang nghi hoặc trước mặt Môi-se: “Chúng ta phải đi ngay vào chiếm lấy đất ấy, chúng ta thừa sức chinh phục xứ này.”
31 Forsothe other aspieris, that weren with hym, seiden, We moun not stie to this puple, for it is strongere than we.
Nhưng các thám tử khác nói: “Chúng ta không đủ sức đâu, vì họ mạnh hơn chúng ta.”
32 And thei deprauyden the lond which thei hadden biholde, anentis the sones of Israel, and seiden, The lond which we cumpassiden deuourith hise dwelleris; the puple which we bihelden is of large stature; there we syen summe wondris ayens kynde,
Những người này thổi phồng những điểm bất lợi: “Đất này sẽ nuốt chửng dân ta, vì dân cư chúng nó là giống khổng lồ.
33 of the sones of Enach, of the kynde of geauntis, to whiche we weren comparisound, and weren seien as locustis.
Chúng tôi đã thấy bọn người khổng lồ con cháu A-nác. Họ to lớn đến độ chúng tôi cảm thấy mình bé nhỏ như những con cào cào khi đứng trước mặt họ.”
