Numbers 11
1 Yn the meene tyme the grutchyng of the puple, as of men sorewynge for trauel, roos ayens the Lord. And whanne Moises hadde herd this thing, he was wrooth; and the fier of the Lord was kyndelid on hem, and deuouride the laste part of the tentis.
Le peuple affecta de se plaindre amèrement aux oreilles du Seigneur. Le Seigneur l’entendit et sa colère s’enflamma, le feu de l’Éternel sévit parmi eux, et déjà il dévorait les dernières lignes du camp.
2 And whanne the puple hadde cried to Moises, Moises preiede the Lord, and the fier was quenchid.
Mais le peuple implora Moïse; Moïse pria le Seigneur, et le feu s’affaissa.
3 And he clepid the name of that place Brennyng, for the fier of the Lord was kyndlid ayens hem.
On nomma cet endroit Tabérah, parce que le feu de l’Éternel y avait sévi parmi eux.
4 And the comyn puple of `malis and femalis, that hadde stied with hem, brent with desire of fleischis, and sat, and wepte with the sones of Israel ioyned togidere to hem, and seide, Who schal yyue to vs fleischis to ete?
Or, le ramas d’étrangers qui était parmi eux fut pris de convoitise; et, à leur tour, les enfants d’Israël se remirent à pleurer et dirent: "Qui nous donnera de la viande à manger?
5 We thenken on the fischis whiche we eten in Egipt freli; gourdis, and melouns, and lekis, and oyniouns, and garlekis comen in to mynde `to vs;
Il nous souvient du poisson que nous mangions pour rien en Egypte, des concombres et des melons, des poireaux, des oignons et de l’ail.
6 oure soule is drie; oure iyen byholden noon other thing `no but manna.
Maintenant, nous sommes exténués, nous manquons de tout: point d’autre perspective que la manne!"
7 Forsothe manna was as the seed of coriaundre, of the colour of bdellyum, which is whijt and briyt as cristal.
(Or, la manne était comme de la graine de coriandre, et son aspect comme l’aspect du bdellium.
8 And the puple yede aboute, and gaderide it, and brak with a queerne stoon, ether pownede in a morter, and sethide in a pot; and made therof litle cakis of the sauour, as of breed maad with oile.
Le peuple se dispersait pour la recueillir, puis on l’écrasait sous la meule ou on la pilait au mortier; on la mettait cuire au pot, et l’on en faisait des gâteaux. Elle avait alors le goût d’une pâtisserie à l’huile.
9 And whanne dew cam doun in the niyt on the tentis, also manna cam doun togidere.
Lorsque la rosée descendait sur le camp, la nuit, la manne y tombait avec elle).
10 Therfor Moises herde the puple wepynge bi meynees, and `alle bi hem silf bi the doris of her tentis; and the woodnesse of the Lord was wrooth greetli, but also the thing was seyn vnsuffrable to Moises.
Moïse entendit le peuple gémir, groupé par familles, chacun à l’entrée de sa tente. L’Éternel entra dans une grande colère; Moïse en fut contristé,
11 And he seide to the Lord, Whi hast thou turmentid thi seruaunt? whi fynde Y not grace bifor thee? and whi hast thou put on me the burthun of al this puple?
et il dit à l’Éternel: "Pourquoi as-tu rendu ton serviteur malheureux? Pourquoi n’ai-je pas trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et m’as-tu imposé le fardeau de tout ce peuple?
12 whethir Y conseyuede al this multitude, ethir gendride it, that thou seie to me, Bere thou hem in thi bosum as a nurise is wont to bere a litil yong child, and bere thou in to the lond for which thou hast swore to the fadris `of hem.
Est-ce donc moi qui ai conçu tout ce peuple, moi qui l’ai enfanté, pour que tu me dises: Porte-le dans ton sein, comme le nourricier porte le nourrisson, jusqu’au pays que tu as promis par serment à ses pères?
13 wherof ben fleischis to me, that Y `yyue to so greet multitude? Thei wepen bifore me, and seyn, `Yyue thou fleischis to vs that we ete;
Où trouverai-je de la chair pour tout ce peuple, qui m’assaille de ses pleurs en disant: Donne-nous de la chair à manger!
14 I mai not aloone suffre al this puple, for it is greuouse to me.
Je ne puis, moi seul, porter tout ce peuple: c’est un faix trop pesant pour moi.
15 If in other maner it semeth to thee, Y biseche that thou sle me, and that Y fynde grace in thin iyen, that Y be not punyschid bi so grete yuelis.
Si tu me destines un tel sort, ah! Je te prie, fais-moi plutôt mourir, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux! Et que je n’aie plus cette misère en perspective!"
16 And the Lord seide to Moises, Gadere thou to me seuenti men of the eldre men of Israel, whiche thou knowist, `that thei ben the elde men and maistris of the puple; and thou schalt lede hem to the dore of the tabernacle of boond of pees, and thou schalt make to stonde there with thee,
L’Éternel répondit à Moïse: "Assemble-moi soixante-dix hommes entre les anciens d’Israël, que tu connaisses pour être des anciens du peuple et ses magistrats; tu les amèneras devant la tente d’assignation, et là ils se rangeront près de toi.
17 that Y come doun, and speke to thee; and Y schal take awey of thi spirit, and Y schal yyue to hem, that thei susteyne with thee the birthun of the puple, and not thou aloone be greuyd.
C’Est là que je viendrai te parler, et je retirerai une partie de l’esprit qui est sur toi pour la faire reposer sur eux: alors ils porteront avec toi la charge du peuple, et tu ne la porteras plus à toi seul.
18 And thou schalt seie to the puple, Be ye halewid; to morew ye schulen ete fleischis; for Y herde you seie, Who schal yyue to vs the metis of fleischis? it was wel to vs in Egipt; that the Lord yyue `fleischis to you,
Quant à ce peuple, tu lui diras: Tenez-vous prêts pour demain, vous mangerez de la chair, puisque vous avez sangloté aux oreilles de l’Éternel en disant: "Qui nous donnera de la viande à manger? Nous étions plus heureux en Egypte!" L’Éternel vous en donnera à manger, de la viande.
19 and that ye ete not o dai, ethir tweyne, ethir fyue, ethir ten, sotheli nether twenti,
Ce n’est pas un jour ni deux que vous en mangerez; ce n’est pas cinq jours, ni dix jours, ni vingt jours,
20 but `til to a monethe of daies, til it go out bi youre nosethirlis, and turne in to wlatyng; for ye han put awei the Lord, which is in the myddis of you, and ye wepten bifor hym, and seiden, Whi yeden we out of Egipt?
mais un mois entier, tellement qu’elle vous ressortira de la gorge et vous deviendra en horreur; parce que vous avez outragé l’Éternel qui est au milieu de vous, et que vous avez pleuré devant lui en disant: Pourquoi sommes-nous sortis de l’Egypte?"
21 And Moises seide to the Lord, Sixe hundrid thousynde of foot men ben of this puple, and thou seist, Y schal yyue to hem `mete of fleischis an hool monethe.
Moïse repartit: "Six cent mille voyageurs composent le peuple dont je fais partie, et tu veux que je leur donne de la viande à manger pour un mois entier!
22 Whether the multitude of scheep and of oxun schal be slayn, that it may suffice to mete, ethir alle the fischis of the see schulen be gaderid to gidere, that tho fille hem?
Faudra-t-il leur tuer brebis et bœufs, pour qu’ils en aient assez? Leur amasser tous les poissons de la mer, pour qu’ils en aient assez?"
23 To whom the Lord answeride, Whether the `hond of the Lord is vnmyyti? riyt now thou schalt se, wher my word schal be fillid in werk.
Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Est-ce que le bras de l’Éternel est trop court? Tu verras bientôt si ma parole s’accomplit devant toi ou non."
24 Therfor Moises cam, and telde to the puple the wordis of the Lord; and he gaderide seuenti men of the eldere of Israel, whiche he made stonde aboute the tabernacle.
Moïse se retira, et rapporta au peuple les paroles de l’Éternel; puis il réunit soixante-dix hommes parmi les anciens du peuple et les rangea autour de la tente.
25 And the Lord cam doun bi a cloude, and spak to Moises, and took a weye of the spirit that was in Moises, and yaf to the seuenti men; and whanne the spirit hadde restid in hem, thei profesieden, and ceessiden not `aftirward.
L’Éternel descendit dans une nuée et lui parla, et, détournant une partie de l’esprit qui l’animait, la reporta sur ces soixante-dix personnages, sur les anciens. Et aussitôt que l’esprit se fut posé sur eux, ils prophétisèrent, mais ils ne le firent plus depuis.
26 Forsothe twei men dwelliden stille in the tentis, of whiche men oon was clepid Heldad, and the tothir Medad, on whiche the spirit restide; for also thei weren descryued, and thei yeden not out to the tabernacle.
Deux de ces hommes étaient restés dans le camp, l’un nommé Eldad, le second Médad. L’Esprit se posa également sur eux, car ils étaient sur la liste, mais ne s’étaient pas rendus à la tente; et ils prophétisèrent dans le camp.
27 And whanne thei profesieden in the tentis, a child ran, and teld to Moises, and seide, Heldad and Medad profecien in the tentis.
Un jeune homme courut l’annoncer à Moïse, en disant: "Eldad et Médad prophétisent dans le camp."
28 Anoon Josue, the sone of Nun, the `mynystre of Moises, and chosun of manye, seide, My lord Moises, forbede thou hem.
Alors Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de Moïse depuis sa jeunesse, prit la parole et dit: "Mon maître Moïse, empêche-les!"
29 And he seide, What hast thou enuye for me? who yyueth that al the puple profesie, and that God yyue his spirit to hem?
Moïse lui répondit: "Tu es bien zélé pour moi! Ah! Plût au Ciel que tout le peuple de Dieu se composât de prophètes, que l’Éternel fit reposer son esprit sur eux!"
30 And Moises turnede ayen, and the eldre men in birthe of Israel in to the tentis.
Et Moïse rentra dans le camp, ainsi que les anciens d’Israël.
31 Forsothe a wynde yede forth fro the Lord, and took curlewis, and bar ouer the see, and lefte in to the tentis, in the iurney, as myche as mai be parformed in o day, bi ech part of the tentis bi cumpas; and tho flowen in the eir bi twei cubitis in `hiynesse ouer the erthe.
Cependant un vent s’éleva de par l’Éternel, qui suscita des cailles du côté de la mer, et les abattit sur le camp dans un rayon d’une journée de part et d’autre, autour du camp, et à la hauteur de deux coudées environ sur le sol.
32 Therfor the puple roos in al that dai and nyyt and in to the tothir dai, and gaderide the multitude of curlewis; he that gaderide litil, gaderide ten `mesuris clepid chorus; `and o chorus conteyneth ten buschels; and thei drieden tho curlewis bi the cumpas of the tentis.
Le peuple s’occupa tout ce jour-là, toute la nuit, et toute la journée du lendemain, à ramasser les cailles; celui qui en recueillit le moins en eut encore dix omer. Et ils se mirent à les étaler autour du camp.
33 Yit `fleischis weren in the teeth `of hem, and siche mete failide not; and lo! the woodnesse of the Lord was reisid ayens the puple, and smoot it with a ful greet veniaunce.
La chair était encore entre leurs dents, elle n’était pas encore consommée, lorsque la colère du Seigneur éclata contre le peuple, et le Seigneur frappa le peuple d’une mortalité très considérable.
34 And thilke place was clepid The sepulcris of coueitise, for there thei birieden the puple that desiride fleischis.
On donna à ce lieu le nom de Kibroth-Hattaava, parce que c’est là qu’on ensevelit ce peuple pris de convoitise.
35 Sotheli thei yeden `out of the sepulcris of coueitise, and camen in to Asseroth, and dwelliden there.
De Kibroth-Hattaava, le peuple partit pour Hacêroth, et il s’arrêta à Hacêroth.
