Numbers 11
1 Yn the meene tyme the grutchyng of the puple, as of men sorewynge for trauel, roos ayens the Lord. And whanne Moises hadde herd this thing, he was wrooth; and the fier of the Lord was kyndelid on hem, and deuouride the laste part of the tentis.
Le peuple se mit à murmurer du mal aux oreilles de Yahweh. Yahweh l'entendit, et sa colère s'enflamma, et le feu de Yahweh s'alluma contre eux et il dévorait à l'extrémité du camp.
2 And whanne the puple hadde cried to Moises, Moises preiede the Lord, and the fier was quenchid.
Le peuple cria vers Moïse, et Moïse pria Yahweh, et le feu s'éteignit.
3 And he clepid the name of that place Brennyng, for the fier of the Lord was kyndlid ayens hem.
On donna à ce lieu le nom de Thabéera, parce que le feu de Yahweh s'était allumé contre eux.
4 And the comyn puple of `malis and femalis, that hadde stied with hem, brent with desire of fleischis, and sat, and wepte with the sones of Israel ioyned togidere to hem, and seide, Who schal yyue to vs fleischis to ete?
Le ramas de gens qui se trouvaient au milieu d'Israël s'enflamma de convoitise, et même les enfants d'Israël recommencèrent à pleurer et dirent: « Qui nous donnera de la viande à manger?
5 We thenken on the fischis whiche we eten in Egipt freli; gourdis, and melouns, and lekis, and oyniouns, and garlekis comen in to mynde `to vs;
Il nous souvient des poissons que nous mangions pour rien en Egypte, des concombres, des melons, des poireaux, des oignons et de l'ail.
6 oure soule is drie; oure iyen byholden noon other thing `no but manna.
Maintenant notre âme est desséchée; plus rien! Nos yeux ne voient que de la manne. »
7 Forsothe manna was as the seed of coriaundre, of the colour of bdellyum, which is whijt and briyt as cristal.
La manne était semblable à la graine de coriandre, et avait l'aspect du bdellium.
8 And the puple yede aboute, and gaderide it, and brak with a queerne stoon, ether pownede in a morter, and sethide in a pot; and made therof litle cakis of the sauour, as of breed maad with oile.
Le peuple se répandait pour la ramasser; il la broyait avec des meules ou la pilait dans un mortier; il la cuisait au pot, et en faisait des gâteaux. Elle avait le goût d'un gâteau à l'huile.
9 And whanne dew cam doun in the niyt on the tentis, also manna cam doun togidere.
Quand la rosée descendait pendant la nuit sur le camp, la manne y descendait aussi.
10 Therfor Moises herde the puple wepynge bi meynees, and `alle bi hem silf bi the doris of her tentis; and the woodnesse of the Lord was wrooth greetli, but also the thing was seyn vnsuffrable to Moises.
Moïse entendit le peuple qui pleurait dans chaque famille, chacun à l'entrée de sa tente. La colère de Yahweh s'enflamma grandement. Moïse fut attristé,
11 And he seide to the Lord, Whi hast thou turmentid thi seruaunt? whi fynde Y not grace bifor thee? and whi hast thou put on me the burthun of al this puple?
et il dit à Yahweh: « Pourquoi avez-vous fait ce mal à votre serviteur, et pourquoi n'ai-je pas trouvé grâce à vos yeux, que vous ayez mis sur moi la charge de tout ce peuple?
12 whethir Y conseyuede al this multitude, ethir gendride it, that thou seie to me, Bere thou hem in thi bosum as a nurise is wont to bere a litil yong child, and bere thou in to the lond for which thou hast swore to the fadris `of hem.
Est-ce moi qui ai conçu tout ce peuple? est-ce moi qui l'ai enfanté, pour que vous me disiez: Porte-le sur ton sein, comme le nourricier porte un enfant qu'on allaite, jusqu'au pays que vous avez juré à ses pères de lui donner?
13 wherof ben fleischis to me, that Y `yyue to so greet multitude? Thei wepen bifore me, and seyn, `Yyue thou fleischis to vs that we ete;
Où prendrai-je de la viande pour en donner à tout ce peuple? Car ils pleurent autour de moi, en disant: Donne-nous de la viande à manger.
14 I mai not aloone suffre al this puple, for it is greuouse to me.
Je ne puis pas, à moi seul, porter tout ce peuple; il est trop pesant pour moi.
15 If in other maner it semeth to thee, Y biseche that thou sle me, and that Y fynde grace in thin iyen, that Y be not punyschid bi so grete yuelis.
Pour me traiter ainsi, tuez-moi plutôt, je vous prie, si j'ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, et que je ne voie pas mon malheur! »
16 And the Lord seide to Moises, Gadere thou to me seuenti men of the eldre men of Israel, whiche thou knowist, `that thei ben the elde men and maistris of the puple; and thou schalt lede hem to the dore of the tabernacle of boond of pees, and thou schalt make to stonde there with thee,
Yahweh dit à Moïse: « Assemble-moi soixante-dix hommes des anciens d'Israël, que tu connais pour être anciens du peuple et préposés sur lui; amène-les à la tente de réunion et qu'ils se tiennent là avec toi.
17 that Y come doun, and speke to thee; and Y schal take awey of thi spirit, and Y schal yyue to hem, that thei susteyne with thee the birthun of the puple, and not thou aloone be greuyd.
Je descendrai et je te parlerai là; je prendrai de l'esprit qui est sur toi et je le mettrai sur eux, afin qu'ils portent avec toi la charge du peuple, et tu ne la porteras plus toi seul.
18 And thou schalt seie to the puple, Be ye halewid; to morew ye schulen ete fleischis; for Y herde you seie, Who schal yyue to vs the metis of fleischis? it was wel to vs in Egipt; that the Lord yyue `fleischis to you,
Tu diras au peuple: Sanctifiez-vous pour demain, et vous aurez de la viande à manger, puisque vous avez pleuré aux oreilles de Yahweh, en disant: Qui nous fera manger de la viande? car nous étions bien en Egypte! Et Yahweh vous donnera de la viande, et vous en mangerez;
19 and that ye ete not o dai, ethir tweyne, ethir fyue, ethir ten, sotheli nether twenti,
ce n'est pas un jour que vous en mangerez, ni deux jours, ni cinq jours, ni dix jours, ni vingt jours,
20 but `til to a monethe of daies, til it go out bi youre nosethirlis, and turne in to wlatyng; for ye han put awei the Lord, which is in the myddis of you, and ye wepten bifor hym, and seiden, Whi yeden we out of Egipt?
mais un mois entier, jusqu'à ce qu'elle vous sorte par les narines et qu'elle vous soit en dégoût, parce que vous avez rejeté Yahweh qui est au milieu de vous, et que vous avez pleuré devant lui, en disant: Pourquoi donc sommes-nous sortis d'Egypte? »
21 And Moises seide to the Lord, Sixe hundrid thousynde of foot men ben of this puple, and thou seist, Y schal yyue to hem `mete of fleischis an hool monethe.
Moïse dit: « Le peuple au milieu duquel je suis est de six cent mille hommes de pied, et vous dites: Je leur donnerai de la viande, et ils en mangeront un mois entier!
22 Whether the multitude of scheep and of oxun schal be slayn, that it may suffice to mete, ethir alle the fischis of the see schulen be gaderid to gidere, that tho fille hem?
Egorgera-t-on pour eux les brebis et les bœufs, pour qu'ils en aient assez? Ou leur ramassera-t-on tous les poissons de la mer, pour qu'ils en aient assez? »
23 To whom the Lord answeride, Whether the `hond of the Lord is vnmyyti? riyt now thou schalt se, wher my word schal be fillid in werk.
Yahweh répondit à Moïse: « La main de Yahweh est-elle trop courte? Tu verras maintenant si ce que j'ai dit t'arrivera ou non. »
24 Therfor Moises cam, and telde to the puple the wordis of the Lord; and he gaderide seuenti men of the eldere of Israel, whiche he made stonde aboute the tabernacle.
Moïse sortit et rapporta au peuple les paroles de Yahweh, et il assembla soixante-dix hommes des anciens du peuple et les plaça autour de la tente.
25 And the Lord cam doun bi a cloude, and spak to Moises, and took a weye of the spirit that was in Moises, and yaf to the seuenti men; and whanne the spirit hadde restid in hem, thei profesieden, and ceessiden not `aftirward.
Yahweh descendit dans la nuée et parla à Moïse; il prit de l'esprit qui était sur lui et le mit sur les soixante-dix anciens; et, dès que l'esprit reposa sur eux, ils prophétisèrent; mais ils ne continuèrent pas.
26 Forsothe twei men dwelliden stille in the tentis, of whiche men oon was clepid Heldad, and the tothir Medad, on whiche the spirit restide; for also thei weren descryued, and thei yeden not out to the tabernacle.
Deux hommes, l'un nommé Eldad, et l'autre Médad, étaient restés dans le camp, et l'esprit reposa aussi sur eux; ils étaient parmi les inscrits, mais ils ne s'étaient pas rendus à la tente; et ils prophétisèrent dans le camp.
27 And whanne thei profesieden in the tentis, a child ran, and teld to Moises, and seide, Heldad and Medad profecien in the tentis.
Un jeune garçon courut l'annoncer à Moïse, en disant: « Eldad et Médad prophétisent dans le camp. »
28 Anoon Josue, the sone of Nun, the `mynystre of Moises, and chosun of manye, seide, My lord Moises, forbede thou hem.
Aussitôt Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de Moïse depuis sa jeunesse, prenant la parole dit: « Moïse, mon seigneur, empêche-les. »
29 And he seide, What hast thou enuye for me? who yyueth that al the puple profesie, and that God yyue his spirit to hem?
Moïse lui répondit: « Es-tu donc jaloux pour moi? Plût à Dieu que tout le peuple de Yahweh fût prophète, et que Yahweh mit son esprit sur eux! »
30 And Moises turnede ayen, and the eldre men in birthe of Israel in to the tentis.
Et Moïse se retira dans le camp, lui et les anciens d'Israël.
31 Forsothe a wynde yede forth fro the Lord, and took curlewis, and bar ouer the see, and lefte in to the tentis, in the iurney, as myche as mai be parformed in o day, bi ech part of the tentis bi cumpas; and tho flowen in the eir bi twei cubitis in `hiynesse ouer the erthe.
Un vent souffla de par l'ordre de Yahweh, qui, de la mer, amena des cailles et les abattit sur le camp, sur l'étendue d'environ une journée de chemin d'un côté, d'environ une journée de chemin de l'autre côté, autour du camp; et il y en avait près de deux coudées de haut sur la surface de la terre.
32 Therfor the puple roos in al that dai and nyyt and in to the tothir dai, and gaderide the multitude of curlewis; he that gaderide litil, gaderide ten `mesuris clepid chorus; `and o chorus conteyneth ten buschels; and thei drieden tho curlewis bi the cumpas of the tentis.
Pendant tout ce jour, toute la nuit et toute la journée du lendemain, le peuple se leva et ramassa les cailles; celui qui en avait ramassé le moins en avait dix gomors; et ils les étendirent pour eux, tout autour du camp.
33 Yit `fleischis weren in the teeth `of hem, and siche mete failide not; and lo! the woodnesse of the Lord was reisid ayens the puple, and smoot it with a ful greet veniaunce.
Mais la chair était encore entre leurs dents, avant d'être consommée, que la colère de Yahweh s'enflamma contre le peuple, et Yahweh frappa le peuple d'une très grande plaie.
34 And thilke place was clepid The sepulcris of coueitise, for there thei birieden the puple that desiride fleischis.
On donna à ce lieu le nom de Qibroth-Hattaava, parce qu'on y enterra le peuple qui s'était enflammé de convoitise.
35 Sotheli thei yeden `out of the sepulcris of coueitise, and camen in to Asseroth, and dwelliden there.
De Qibroth-Hattaava le peuple partit pour Haséroth, et il s'arrêta à Haséroth.
