Judges 9
1 Forsothe Abymelech, the sone of Gerobaal, yede in to Sichem to the britheren of his modir; and he spak to hem, and to al the kynrede of `the hows of his modir, and seide,
Et Abimélec, fils de Jérubbahal, s'en alla à Sichem vers les frères de sa mère, et leur parla, et à toute la famille de la maison du père de sa mère, en disant:
2 Speke ye to alle the men of Sichem, What is betere to you, that seuenti men, alle the sones of Gerobaal, be lordis of you, whether that o man be lord to you? and also biholde, for Y am youre boon, and youre fleisch.
Je vous prie, faites entendre ces paroles à tous les Seigneurs de Sichem; Lequel vous semble le meilleur, ou que soixante-dix hommes, tous enfants de Jérubbahal, dominent sur vous; ou qu'un seul homme domine sur vous? et souvenez-vous que je suis votre os et votre chair.
3 And the britheren of his modir spaken of hym alle these wordis to alle the men of Sichem; and bowiden her hertis aftir Abymelech, and seiden, He is oure brother.
Les frères donc de sa mère dirent de sa part toutes ces paroles, les Seigneurs de Sichem l'entendant; et leur cœur fut incliné vers Abimélec; car ils dirent, c'est notre frère.
4 And thei yauen to hym seuenti weiytis of siluer of the temple of Baal Berith; and he hiride to hym therof men pore and hauynge no certeyn dwellynge, and thei sueden hym.
Et ils lui donnèrent soixante-dix [pièces] d'argent [prises] de la maison de Bahal-bérith, avec lesquelles Abimélec leva des hommes n'ayant rien, et vagabonds, qui le suivirent.
5 And he cam in to `the hows of his fadir in Ephra, and killide hise britheren the sones of Gerobaal, `seuenti men, on o stoon. And Joathan, the leste sone of Gerobaal, lefte, and was hid.
Et il vint en la maison de son père à Hophra, et tua sur une même pierre ses frères, enfants de Jérubbahal, qui étaient soixante-dix hommes; mais Jotham, le plus petit fils de Jérubbahal, demeura de reste, parce qu'il s'était caché.
6 Forsothe alle the men of Sichem, and alle the meynees of the citee of Mello, weren gadirid to gydere, and thei yeden, and maden Abymelech kyng, bysidis the ook that stood in Sichem.
Et tous les Seigneurs de Sichem s'assemblèrent, avec toute la maison de Millo, et ils vinrent, et établirent Abimélec pour Roi auprès du bois de chênes qui est en Sichem.
7 And whanne this thing was teld to Joathan, he yede, and stood in the cop of the hil Garisym, and cried with `vois reisid, and seide, Ye men of Sichem, here me, so that God here you.
Et on le rapporta à Jotham, qui s'en alla, et se tint au sommet de la montagne de Guérizim, et élevant sa voix, il cria, et leur dit: Ecoutez-moi, Seigneurs de Sichem, et que Dieu vous entende.
8 Trees yeden to anoynte a kyng on hem; and tho seiden to the olyue tre, Comaunde thou to vs.
Les arbres allèrent [un jour] en toute diligence pour oindre sur eux un Roi, et ils dirent à l'olivier: Règne sur nous.
9 Whiche answeride, Whether Y may forsake my fatnesse, which bothe Goddis and men vsen, and come, that Y be auaunsid among trees?
Mais l'olivier leur répondit: Me ferait-on quitter ma graisse, par laquelle Dieu et les hommes sont honorés, afin que j'aille m'agiter pour les [autres] arbres?
10 And the trees seiden to the fige tree, Come thou, and take the rewme on vs.
Puis les arbres dirent au figuier: Viens toi, [et] règne sur nous.
11 Which answeride to hem, Whether Y may forsake my swetnesse and swetteste fruytis, and go that Y be auaunsid among othere trees?
Et le figuier leur répondit: Me ferait-on quitter ma douceur, et mon bon fruit, afin que j'aille m'agiter pour les [autres] arbres?
12 Also `the trees spaken to the vyne, Come thou, and comaunde to vs.
Puis les arbres dirent à la vigne: Viens toi, et règne sur nous.
13 Which answeride, Whether Y may forsake my wyn, that gladith God and men, and be auaunsid among othere trees?
Et la vigne répondit: Me ferait-on quitter mon bon vin, qui réjouit Dieu et les hommes, afin que j'aille m'agiter pour les [autres] arbres?
14 And alle trees seiden to the ramne, ether theue thorn, Come thou, and be lord on vs.
Alors tous les arbres dirent à l'épine: Viens toi, et règne sur nous.
15 Whiche answeride to hem, If ye maken me verili kyng to you, come ye, and reste vndur my schadewe; sotheli, if ye nylen, fier go out of the ramne, and deuoure the cedris of the Liban.
Et l'épine répondit aux arbres: Si c'est en sincérité que vous m'oignez pour Roi sur vous, venez, et retirez-vous sous mon ombre; sinon, que le feu sorte de l'épine, et qu'il dévore les cèdres du Liban.
16 Now therfor if riytfuli and without synne `ye han maad Abymelech kyng on you, and ye han do wel with Jerobaal, and with his hows, and ye han yolde while to the benefices of hym,
Maintenant donc, si vous avez agi avec sincérité et avec intégrité, en établissant Abimélec pour Roi, et si vous en avez bien usé envers Jérubbahal et sa maison, et si vous lui avez fait selon qu'il vous y a obligés par ses actions.
17 that fauyt for you, and yaf his lijf to perelis, that he schulde delyuere you fro the hond of Madian;
(Car mon père a combattu pour vous, et a exposé sa vie, et vous a délivrés de la main de Madian.
18 and ye han rise now ayens the hows of my fadir, and han slayn hyse sones, seuenti men, on o stoon, and `han maad Abymelech, sone of his handmayde, kyng on the dwelleris of Sichem, for he is youre brother;
Mais vous vous êtes élevés aujourd'hui contre la maison de mon père, et avez tué sur une pierre ses enfants, [qui étaient] soixante-dix hommes, et avez établi pour Roi Abimélec fils de sa servante, sur les Seigneurs de Sichem, parce qu'il est votre frère.)
19 therfor if ye han do riytfuli, and with out synne with Gerobaal and his hows, to dai be ye glad in Abymelech, and be he glad in you; but if ye han do weiwardli,
Si, dis-je, vous avez agi aujourd'hui avec sincérité et avec intégrité envers Jérubbahal, et envers sa maison, réjouissez-vous d'Abimélec, et qu'il se réjouisse aussi de vous.
20 fier go out `of hym, and waste the dwelleris of Sichem, and the citee of Mello; and fier go out of the men of Sichem, and of the citee of Mello, and deuoure Abymelech.
Sinon, que le feu sorte d'Abimélec, et qu'il dévore les Seigneurs de Sichem, et la maison de Millo; et que le feu sorte des Seigneurs de Sichem, et de la maison de Millo, et qu'il dévore Abimélec.
21 And whanne he hadde seide these thingis, he fledde, and yede in to Berara, and dwellide there, for drede of Abymelech, his brother.
Puis Jotham s'enfuit en diligence, et s'en alla à Béer, et y demeura, à cause d'Abimélec son frère.
22 And Abymelech regnede on Israel thre yeer.
Et Abimélec domina sur Israël trois ans.
23 And the Lord sente the worste spirit bitwixe Abymelech and the dwelleris of Sichem, whiche bigynnen to holde hym abomynable,
Mais Dieu envoya un mauvais esprit entre Abimélec et les Seigneurs de Sichem; et les Seigneurs de Sichem furent infidèles à Abimélec.
24 and to arette the felony of sleyng of seuenti sones of Gerobaal, and the schedyng out of her blood, in to Abymelech her brother, and to othere princes of Sichem, that hadden helpid hym.
Afin que la violence faite aux soixante-dix fils de Jérubbahal, et leur sang, retournât sur Abimélec leur frère, qui les avait tués; et sur les Seigneurs de Sichem qui lui avaient tenu la main pour tuer ses frères.
25 And thei settiden buyschementis ayens hym in the hiynesse of hillis; and the while thei abideden `the comyng of hym, thei hauntiden theftis, and token preies of men passynge forth; and it was teld to Abymelech.
Les Seigneurs de Sichem donc lui mirent des embûches sur le sommet des montagnes, et ils pillaient tous ceux qui passaient près d'eux par le chemin. Ce qui fut rapporté à Abimélec.
26 Forsothe Gaal, `the sone of Obed, cam with his britheren, and passide in to Siccima; at whos entryng the dwelleris of Sichem weren reisid, and yeden out `in to feeldis,
Alors Gahal, fils de Hébed, vint avec ses frères, et ils entrèrent dans Sichem; et les Seigneurs de Sichem eurent confiance en lui.
27 and wastiden vyneris, and `to-traden grapis; and with cumpeneys of syngeris maad thei entriden in to `the temple of her God, and among metis and drynkis thei cursiden Abymalech, while Gaal,
Puis étant sortis aux champs ils vendangèrent leurs vignes, et en foulèrent [les raisins], et firent bonne chère; et ils entrèrent dans la maison de leur Dieu, et ils mangèrent, et burent, et maudirent Abimélec.
28 the sone of Obed, criede, Who is this Abymelech? And what is Sichem, that we serue hym? Whether he is not the sone of Jerobaal, and made Zebul his seruaunt prince on the men of Emor, fadir of Sichem? Whi therfor schulen we serue hym?
Alors Gahal, fils de Hébed, dit: Qui est Abimélec, et quelle est Sichem, que nous servions Abimélec? [N'est-il pas] fils de Jérubbahal? Et Zébul [n'est-il pas] son prévôt? Servez [plutôt] les hommes de Hémor, père de Sichem. Mais pour quelle raison servirions-nous celui-ci?
29 `Y wolde, that sum man yaf this puple vndur myn hond, that Y schulde take awei Abimelech fro the myddis. And it was seid to Abymelech, Gadere thou the multitude of oost, and come thou.
Plût à Dieu qu'on me donnât ce peuple sous ma conduite, et je chasserais Abimélec. Et il dit à Abimélec: Multiplie ton armée, et sors.
30 For whanne the wordis of Gaal, sone of Obed, weren herd, Zebul, the prynce of the citee, was ful wrooth;
Et Zébul, capitaine de la ville, entendit les paroles de Gahal, fils de Hébed, et sa colère s'enflamma.
31 and he sente priueli messangeris to Abymelech, and seide, Lo! Gaal, sone of Obed, cam in to Siccymam, with hise britheren, and he excitith the citee to fiyte ayens thee;
Puis il envoya adroitement des messagers vers Abimélec, pour lui dire: Voici, Gahal fils de Hébed, et ses frères, sont entrés dans Sichem; et voici, ils arment la ville contre toi.
32 therfor rise thou bi niyt with the puple, which is with thee, and be thou hid in the feeld;
Maintenant donc lève-toi de nuit, toi, et le peuple qui est avec toi, et mets des embûches aux champs.
33 and first in the morewtid, whanne the sunne rysith, falle on the citee; forsothe whanne he goth out with his puple ayens thee, do thou to hym that that thou maist.
Et au matin, environ le soleil levant, tu te lèveras de matin, et te jetteras sur la ville; et voici, [Gahal] et le peuple qui est avec lui, sortiront contre toi, et tu lui feras selon que tu en trouveras le moyen.
34 Therfor Abymelech roos with al his oost bi nyyt, and settide buyschementis bisidis Siccimam, in foure placis.
Abimélec donc se leva de nuit, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, et ils mirent des embûches contre Sichem, et [les partagèrent] en quatre bandes.
35 And Gaal, the sone of Obed, yede out, and stood in the entryng of `the yate of the citee. Forsothe Abymelech and al the oost with hym roos fro the place of buyschementis.
Alors Gahal, fils de Hébed, sortit, et s'arrêta à l'entrée de la porte de la ville; et Abimélec, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent de l'embuscade.
36 And whanne Gaal hadde seyn the puple, he seide to Zebul, Lo! a multitude cometh doun fro the hillis. To whom he answeride, Thou seest the schadewis of hillis as the `heedis of men, and thou art disseyued bi this errour.
Et Gahal ayant aperçu ce peuple-là, dit à Zébul: Voici du peuple qui descend du sommet des montagnes. Et Zébul lui dit: Tu vois l'ombre des montagnes, comme si c'étaient des hommes.
37 And eft Gaal seide, Lo! a puple cometh doun fro the myddis of erthe, `that is, fro the hiynesse of hillis, and o cumpeny cometh bi the weie that biholdith the ook.
Et Gahal parla encore, et dit: Voilà du peuple qui descend du milieu du pays, et une bande vient du chemin du bois de chênes des devins.
38 To whom Zebul seide, Where is now thi mouth, bi which thou spekist, Who is Abymelech, that we serue hym? Whether this is not the puple, whom thou dispisidist? Go thou out, and fiyte ayens hym.
Et Zébul lui dit: Où est maintenant ta vanterie, quand tu disais: Qui est Abimélec, que nous le servions? N'est-ce pas ici ce peuple que tu as méprisé? Sors maintenant, je te prie, et combats contr'eux.
39 Therfor Gaal yede, while the puple of Sichen abood; and he fauyt ayens Abymelech.
Alors Gahal sortit conduisant les Seigneurs de Sichem, et combattit contre Abimélec.
40 Which pursuede Gaal fleynge, and constreynede to go in to the citee; and ful many of his part felde doun `til to the yate of the citee.
Et Abimélec le poursuivit, comme il s'enfuyait de devant lui, et plusieurs tombèrent morts jusqu'à l'entrée de la porte.
41 And Abymelech sat in Ranna; sotheli Zebul puttide Gaal and hise felowis out of the citee, and suffride not to dwelle ther ynne.
Et Abimélec s'arrêta à Aruma; et Zébul repoussa Gahal et ses frères, afin qu'ils ne demeurassent plus dans Sichem.
42 Therfor in the dai suynge the puple yede out in to the feeld; and whanne this thing was teld to Abymelech,
Et il arriva dès le lendemain que le peuple sortit aux champs; ce qui fut rapporté à Abimélec;
43 he took his oost, and departide `in to thre cumpenyes, and settide buyschementis in the feeldis; and he siy that the puple yede out of the citee, and he roos,
Lequel prit du peuple, et le divisa en trois bandes, et les mit en embuscade dans les champs, et ayant aperçu que le peuple sortait de la ville, il se leva contr'eux, et les défit.
44 and felde on hem with his cumpeny, and enpugnyde and bisegide the citee. Sothely twei cumpenyes yeden aboute opynli bi the feeld, and pursueden aduersaries.
car Abimélec, et la bande qui était avec lui se répandirent, et se tinrent à l'entrée de la porte de la ville, mais les deux autres bandes se jetèrent sur tous ceux qui étaient aux champs, et les défirent.
45 Certis Abymelech fauyt ayens the citee in al that dai, which he took, whanne the dwelleris weren slayn, and that citee was destried, so that he spreynte abrood salt ther ynne.
Ainsi Abimélec combattit tout ce jour-là contre la ville, et prit la ville, et tua le peuple qui y était, et ayant rasé la ville, y sema du sel.
46 And whanne thei, that dwelliden in the tour of Sichem, hadde herd this, thei entriden in to the temple of her god Berith, where thei hadden maad boond of pees with hym; and of that the place took name, which place was ful strong.
Et tous les Seigneurs de la Tour de Sichem, ayant appris cela, se retirèrent dans le fort, qui était la maison du Dieu Bérith.
47 And Abymelech herde the men of the tour of Sichem gaderid to gidere,
Et on rapporta à Abimélec que tous les Seigneurs de la Tour de Sichem s'étaient assemblés [dans le fort].
48 and he stiede in to the hil Selmon with al his puple; and with an axe takun he kittide doun a boow of a tre, and he bar it, put on the schuldur, and seide to felowis, Do ye this thing, which ye seen me do.
Alors Abimélec monta sur le mont Tsalmon, lui et tout le peuple qui était avec lui; et Abimélec prit une hache et coupa une branche d'arbre, et l'ayant mise sur son épaule, la porta, et dit au peuple qui était avec lui: Avez-vous vu ce que j'ai fait? dépêchez-vous, faites comme moi.
49 Therfor with strijf thei kittiden doun bowis of the trees, and sueden the duyk; whiche cumpassiden and brenten `the tour; and so it was doon, that with smooke and fier a thousynde of men weren slayn, men togidere and wymmen, of the dwelleris of the tour of Sichem.
Chacun donc de tout le peuple coupa une branche, et ils suivirent Abimélec, et mirent [ces branches] tout autour du fort, et y ayant mis le feu, ils brûlèrent le fort. Et toutes les personnes de la Tour de Sichem moururent, au nombre d'environ mille, tant hommes que femmes.
50 Forsothe Abymelech wente forth fro thennus, and cam to the citee of Thebes, which he cumpasside, and bisegide with an oost.
Puis Abimélec s'en allant à Tébets, y mit son camp, et la prit.
51 Forsothe the tour was hiy in the myddis of the citee, to which men togidere and wymmen fledden, and alle the princes of the citee, while the yate was closid stronglieste; and thei stoden on the roof of the tour bi toretis.
Or il y avait au milieu de la ville une Tour forte, où s'enfuirent tous les hommes et toutes les femmes, et tous les Seigneurs de la ville, et ayant fermé les portes après eux, ils montèrent sur le toit de la Tour.
52 And Abymelech cam bisidis the tour, and fauyt strongli, and he neiyede to the dore, and enforside to putte fier vndur; and lo!
Alors Abimélec venant jusqu'à la Tour, l'attaqua, et s'approcha jusqu'à la porte de la Tour pour la brûler par feu.
53 o womman castide fro aboue a gobet of a mylnestoon, and hurtlide to `the heed of Abymelech, and brak his brayn.
Mais une femme jeta une pièce de meule sur la tête d'Abimélec, et lui cassa le crâne.
54 And he clepide soone his squyer, and seide to hym, Drawe out thi swerd, and sle me, lest perauenture it be seid, that Y am slan of a womman. Which performede `the comaundementis, and `killide Abymelech;
Lequel ayant appelé incessamment le garçon qui portait ses armes, lui dit: Tire ton épée, et me tue, de peur qu'on ne dise de moi, une femme l'a tué. Son garçon donc le transperça, et il mourut.
55 and whanne he was deed, alle men of Israel that weren with hym turneden ayen to her seetis.
Et ceux d'Israël voyant qu'Abimélec était mort, s'en allèrent chacun en son lieu.
56 And God yeldide to Abymelech the yuel that he dide ayens his fadir, for he killide hise seuenti britheren.
Ainsi Dieu rendit à Abimélec le mal qu'il avait commis contre son père, en tuant ses soixante-dix frères;
57 Also that thing was yoldun to men of Sichem, which thei wrouyten, and the curs of Joathan, sone of Jerobaal, cam on hem.
Et toute la méchanceté des hommes de Sichem; Dieu, [dis-je], la fit retourner sur leurs têtes; et ainsi la malédiction de Jotham, fils de Jérubbahal, vint sur eux.
