Judges 18
1 In tho daies was no kyng in Israel; and the lynage of Dan souyte possessioun to it silf, to dwelle ther ynne; for `til to that dai it hadde not take eritage among other lynagis.
En ces jours-là il n’y avait point de roi en Israël, et la tribu de Dan se cherchait une possession pour y habiter; car jusqu’à ce jour elle n’avait pas reçu de lot parmi les autres tribus.
2 Therfor the sones of Dan senten fyue the strongeste men of her generacioun and meynee fro Saraa and Escahol, that thei schulden aspie the lond, and biholde diligentli. And thei seiden to hem, Go ye, and biholde the lond. And whanne thei goynge hadden come in to the hil of Effraym, and hadden entrid in to the hows of Mycha, thei restiden there.
Les enfants de Dan envoyèrent donc cinq hommes de leur race et de leur famille, des plus vaillants de Saraa et d’Esthaol, pour explorer la terre, et l’examiner avec soin; et ils leur dirent: Allez et considérez la terre. Lorsque ceux-ci, s’étant mis en chemin, furent venus à la montagne d’Ephraïm, et qu’ils furent entrés dans la maison de Michas, ils s’y reposèrent;
3 And thei knewen the voys of the yong wexynge dekene; and thei restiden in `the yn of hym, and seiden to hym, Who brouyte thee hidur? What doist thou here? For what cause woldist thou come hidur?
Et reconnaissant la voix du jeune Lévite, et se trouvant dans son logis, ils lui demandèrent: Qui t’a amené ici? qu’y fais-tu? pour quel motif as-tu voulu y venir?
4 Which answeride `to hem, Mychas yaf to me these and these thingis, and hiride me for meede, that Y be preest to hym.
Il leur répondit: Michas a fait pour moi telle et telle chose, et il ma loué moyennant un salaire, pour que je lui serve de prêtre.
5 Forsothe thei preieden hym, that he schulde counsele the Lord, and thei myyten wite, whether thei yeden in weie of prosperite, and the thing schulde haue effect.
Or, ils le prièrent de consulter le Seigneur, afin qu’ils pussent savoir s’ils feraient un heureux voyage, et si leur entreprise aurait son effet.
6 Which answeride to hem, Go ye with pees, the Lord biholdith youre weie, and the iourney whidur ye goon.
Il leur répondit: Allez en paix, le Seigneur regarde votre voie, et le chemin par lequel vous allez.
7 Therfor the fyue men yeden, and camen to Lachys; and thei siyen the puple dwellynge ther ynne with outen ony drede, bi the custom of Sidonyis, sikur and resteful, for no man outirli ayenstood hem, and `of grete richessis, and fer fro Sidon, and departid fro alle men.
S’en allant donc, les cinq hommes vinrent à Laïs, et ils virent que le peuple y habitait sans aucune crainte, selon la coutume des Sidoniens, en sécurité et tranquille, personne absolument ne s’opposant à lui, ayant de grandes richesses, loin de Sidon, et séparé de tous les hommes.
8 And thei turneden ayen to her britheren in Saraa and Escahol; and thei answeriden to `britheren axynge what thei hadden do,
Et étant retournés vers leurs frères à Saraa et à Esthaol, ils répondirent à ceux qui leur demandèrent ce qu’ils avaient fait:
9 Rise ye, and stie we to hem, for we siyen the lond ful riche and plenteuous; nyle ye be necgligent, nil ye ceesse, go we, and haue it in possessioun;
Levez-vous, montons vers eux, car nous avons vu la terre très riche et très fertile; ne mettez point de négligence, et ne différez point. Allons, et possédons-la, il n’y aura aucun labeur.
10 no trauel schal be; we schulen entre to sikir men, in to a largeste cuntrey; and the Lord schal bitake to vs a place, wher ynne is not pouert of ony thing of tho that ben brouyt forth in erthe.
Nous entrerons chez des gens en sécurité, dans une contrée très étendue, et le Seigneur nous livrera un lieu dans lequel il n’y a manque d’aucune chose de ce qui est produit sur la terre.
11 Therfor sixe hundrid men gird with armeris of batel yeden forth `of the kynrede of Dan, that is, fro Saraa and Escahol.
Ils partirent donc de la famille de Dan, c’est-à-dire de Saraa et d’Esthaol, six cents hommes, munis d’armes de guerre,
12 And thei stieden, and dwelliden in Cariathiarym of Juda, which place took fro that tyme the name of Castels of Dan, and is bihyndis the bak of Cariathiarym.
Et, montant, ils demeurèrent à Cariathiarim de Juda; lequel lieu, depuis ce temps-là, reçut le nom de Camp de Dan, et il est derrière Cariathiarim.
13 Fro thennus thei passiden in to the hil of Effraym; and whanne thei hadden come to the hows of Mychas, the fyue men,
De là ils passèrent à la montagne d’Ephraïm. Et lorsqu’ils furent venus à la maison de Michas,
14 that weren sent bifore to biholde the lond of Lachis, seiden to her other britheren, Ye knowen, that ephod, and theraphyn, and a grauun ymage and yotun is in these housis; se ye what plesith you.
Les cinq hommes qui auparavant avaient été envoyés pour considérer la terre de Laïs, dirent à tous leurs autres frères: Vous savez qu’en ces maisons-là il y a un ephod, des théraphims, une image taillée au ciseau, et une idole de fonte; voyez ce qui vous plaît.
15 And whanne thei hadden bowid a litil, thei entriden in to the hows of the yong dekene, that was in the hows of Mychas, and thei gretten hym with pesible wordis.
Lors donc qu’ils se furent un peu détournés, ils entrèrent dans la maison du jeune Lévite qui était dans la maison de Michas; et ils le saluèrent avec des paroles de paix.
16 Forsothe sixe hundrid men stoden bifore the dore, so as thei weren armed. And thei, that entriden in to the `hows of the yong man, enforsiden to take awey the grauun ymage, and the ephod, and theraphin, and the yotun ymage; and the preest stood bifore the dore,
Cependant, les six cents hommes, tels qu’ils étaient armés, se tenaient devant la porte.
17 while sixe hundrid strongeste men abideden not fer.
Mais ceux qui étaient entrés dans la maison du jeune homme s’efforçaient d’enlever l’image taillée au ciseau, l’éphod, les théraphims et l’idole de fonte; et le prêtre se tenait devant la porte, les six cents hommes très vaillants se tenant non loin de là.
18 Therfor thei that entriden token the grauun ymage, ephod, and idols, and the yotun ymage; to whiche the preest seide, What doen ye?
Ceux donc qui étaient entrés enlevèrent l’image taillée au ciseau, l’éphod, les idoles, et celle de fonte. Le prêtre leur dit: Que faites-vous?
19 To whom thei answeriden, Be thou stille, and putte the fyngur on thi mouth, and come with vs, that we haue thee fadir and preest. What is betere to thee, that thou be preest in the hows of o man, whether in o lynage and meynee in Israel?
Ils lui répondirent: Tais-toi, et mets ton doigt sur ta bouche; et viens avec nous, afin que nous t’ayons pour père et pour prêtre. Lequel est le meilleur pour toi, que tu sois prêtre dans la maison d’un homme, ou dans une tribu et une famille en Israël?
20 And whanne he hadde herd this, he assentide to `the wordis of hem, and he took the ephod, and ydols, and the grauun ymage, and yede forth with hem.
Ce qu’ayant entendu, il acquiesça à leurs paroles, prit l’éphod, les idoles et l’image taillée au ciseau, et partit avec eux.
21 And whanne thei yeden, and hadden maad the litle children, and werk beestis, and al thing that was preciouse, to go bifor hem;
Lorsqu’ils étaient en chemin, et qu’ils avaient fait aller devant eux les enfants, les bestiaux et tout ce qui était précieux,
22 and whanne thei weren now fer fro `the hows of Mychas, men that dwelliden in the housis of Mychas, crieden togidere, and sueden,
Et que déjà ils étaient loin de la maison de Michas, les hommes qui demeuraient dans la maison de Michas, s’appelant les uns les autres, les suivirent,
23 and bigunnun to crye `aftir the bak. Whiche whanne thei hadden biholde, seiden to Mychas, What wolt thou to thee? whi criest thou?
Et se mirent à crier après eux. Ceux-ci s’étant retournés, dirent à Michas: Que demandes-tu? Pourquoi cries-tu?
24 Which answeride, Ye han take awey my goddis whiche Y made to me, and the preest, and alle thingis whiche Y haue; and ye seien, What is to thee?
Il répondit: Vous m’avez enlevé mes dieux que je me suis faits, mon prêtre, et tout ce que j’ai, et vous dites: Qu’as-tu?
25 And the sones of Dan seiden to hym, Be war, lest thou speke more to vs, and men styrid in soule come to thee, and thou perische with al thin hows.
Et les enfants de Dan lui dirent: Prends garde que tu ne nous parles davantage, que des hommes excités par la colère ne viennent contre toi, et que toi-même tu ne périsses avec toute ta maison.
26 And so thei yeden forth in the iourney bigunnun. Forsothe Mychas siy, that thei weren strongere than he, and turnede ayen in to his hows.
Et ils continuèrent ainsi leur chemin commencé. Mais Michas, voyant qu’ils seraient plus forts que lui, s’en retourna à sa maison.
27 Forsothe sixe hundrid men token the preest, and the thingis whiche we biforseiden, and camen in to Lachis to the puple restynge and sikur; and thei smytiden hem bi the scharpnesse of swerd, and bitoken the citee to brennyng,
Cependant les six cents hommes emmenèrent le prêtre et ce que nous avons dit plus haut; et ils vinrent à Laïs, chez un peuple tranquille et en sécurité, et ils les frappèrent du tranchant du glaive, et livrèrent la ville aux flammes,
28 while no man outirli yaf help, for thei dwelliden fer fro Sydon, and hadden not ony thing of felouschipe and cause with ony of men. Forsothe the citee was set in the cuntrei of Roob; which citee thei bildiden eft, and dwelliden ther ynne;
Personne absolument ne portant secours aux habitants de Laïs, parce qu’ils habitaient loin de Sidon, et qu’ils n’avaient avec quelque homme que ce soit aucune société et aucun commerce. Or, la ville était située dans la contrée de Rohob; et l’ayant reconstruite, ils y habitèrent,
29 while the name of the citee was clepid Dan, bi the name of her fadir, whom Israel hadde gendrid, which citee was seid Lachis bifore.
Appelant cette ville du nom de Dan, selon le nom de leur père qu’avait engendré Israël, elle qui auparavant était appelée Laïs.
30 And `thei settiden there the grauun ymage, and Jonathas, sone of Jerson, sone of Moises, and `Jonathas sones, preestis, in the lynage of Dan, til in to the dai of her caitifte.
Ils érigèrent pour eux l’image taillée au ciseau, et ils établirent Jonathan, fils de Gersam, fils de Moïse, et ses fils prêtres dans la tribu de Dan, jusqu’au jour de leur captivité.
31 And the idol of Mychas dwellide at hem, in al the tyme `in which the hows of God was in Silo. In tho daies was no kyng in Israel.
Et l’idole de Michas demeura parmi eux pendant tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo. En ces jours-là il n’y avait point de roi dans Israël.
