Judges 18
1 In tho daies was no kyng in Israel; and the lynage of Dan souyte possessioun to it silf, to dwelle ther ynne; for `til to that dai it hadde not take eritage among other lynagis.
A cette époque il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël, et à cette époque la Tribu des Danites se cherchait une propriété où s'établir, car jusqu'à ce jour il ne lui était rien échu en propriété parmi les Tribus d'Israël.
2 Therfor the sones of Dan senten fyue the strongeste men of her generacioun and meynee fro Saraa and Escahol, that thei schulden aspie the lond, and biholde diligentli. And thei seiden to hem, Go ye, and biholde the lond. And whanne thei goynge hadden come in to the hil of Effraym, and hadden entrid in to the hows of Mycha, thei restiden there.
Et les fils de Dan envoyèrent de Tsoréa et d'Esthaol cinq hommes de leur race pris sur eux tous, hommes de cœur, pour explorer et scruter le pays, et ils leur dirent: Partez et explorez le pays! Et ils pénétrèrent dans la montagne d'Ephraïm jusqu'à la maison de Micha, et ils firent là leur halte pour la nuit.
3 And thei knewen the voys of the yong wexynge dekene; and thei restiden in `the yn of hym, and seiden to hym, Who brouyte thee hidur? What doist thou here? For what cause woldist thou come hidur?
Comme ils étaient près de la maison de Micha, ils reconnurent le langage du jeune homme, du Lévite, et ils se dirigèrent de ce côté-là et lui dirent: Qui t'a amené ici? et que fais-tu dans ce lieu? et qu'y as-tu?
4 Which answeride `to hem, Mychas yaf to me these and these thingis, and hiride me for meede, that Y be preest to hym.
Et il leur dit: Micha m'a traité de telle et telle manière, il me salarie pour que je sois son prêtre.
5 Forsothe thei preieden hym, that he schulde counsele the Lord, and thei myyten wite, whether thei yeden in weie of prosperite, and the thing schulde haue effect.
Et ils lui dirent: Consulte donc Dieu pour que nous sachions si nous réussirons dans le voyage que nous faisons!
6 Which answeride to hem, Go ye with pees, the Lord biholdith youre weie, and the iourney whidur ye goon.
Et le prêtre leur dit: Allez en paix! Le voyage que vous faites est sous le regard de l'Éternel.
7 Therfor the fyue men yeden, and camen to Lachys; and thei siyen the puple dwellynge ther ynne with outen ony drede, bi the custom of Sidonyis, sikur and resteful, for no man outirli ayenstood hem, and `of grete richessis, and fer fro Sidon, and departid fro alle men.
Et les cinq hommes partirent et parvinrent à Laïs. Et ils virent que le peuple qui y était, vivait en sécurité, à la manière des Sidoniens, paisible et confiant, et que dans le pays il n'y avait pas de maître du pouvoir qui leur fît injure en rien; d'ailleurs, ils étaient à distance des Sidoniens et ils n'avaient pas affaire avec les hommes.
8 And thei turneden ayen to her britheren in Saraa and Escahol; and thei answeriden to `britheren axynge what thei hadden do,
Et ils revinrent auprès de leurs frères à Tsoréa et Esthaol, et leurs frères leur dirent: Qu'apportez-vous?
9 Rise ye, and stie we to hem, for we siyen the lond ful riche and plenteuous; nyle ye be necgligent, nil ye ceesse, go we, and haue it in possessioun;
Et ils répondirent: Levons-nous et marchons contre eux; car nous avons examiné le pays; et voici, il est excellent; mais ne dites mot! Ne tardez pas à marcher, à aller conquérir le pays!
10 no trauel schal be; we schulen entre to sikir men, in to a largeste cuntrey; and the Lord schal bitake to vs a place, wher ynne is not pouert of ony thing of tho that ben brouyt forth in erthe.
En arrivant vous arriverez chez un peuple en sécurité; et le pays est vaste dans les deux sens. Car Dieu livre ce pays entre vos mains, cette contrée où rien ne manque de tout ce qui est sur la terre.
11 Therfor sixe hundrid men gird with armeris of batel yeden forth `of the kynrede of Dan, that is, fro Saraa and Escahol.
Alors de là, de Tsoréa et d'Esthaol, partirent six cents hommes de la Tribu des Danites, munis de l'attirail de guerre.
12 And thei stieden, and dwelliden in Cariathiarym of Juda, which place took fro that tyme the name of Castels of Dan, and is bihyndis the bak of Cariathiarym.
Et s'étant avancés ils campèrent à Kiriath-Jearim en Juda. C'est pourquoi ce lieu conserve jusqu'aujourd'hui le nom de Mahaneh-Dan (camp de Dan).
13 Fro thennus thei passiden in to the hil of Effraym; and whanne thei hadden come to the hows of Mychas, the fyue men,
Voici, il est derrière Kiriath-Jearim. Et de là ils passèrent sur les monts d'Ephraïm, et atteignirent la maison de Micha.
14 that weren sent bifore to biholde the lond of Lachis, seiden to her other britheren, Ye knowen, that ephod, and theraphyn, and a grauun ymage and yotun is in these housis; se ye what plesith you.
Alors les cinq hommes qui étaient allés explorer la région de Laïs, prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères: Savez-vous que dans [l'une de] ces maisons il y a un Ephod et des Théraphims et une image de taille et de fonte? Voyez donc ce que vous avez à faire.
15 And whanne thei hadden bowid a litil, thei entriden in to the hows of the yong dekene, that was in the hows of Mychas, and thei gretten hym with pesible wordis.
Et ils se dirigèrent de ce côté-là, et ils entrèrent dans la maison du jeune Lévite, dans la maison de Micha, et ils le saluèrent.
16 Forsothe sixe hundrid men stoden bifore the dore, so as thei weren armed. And thei, that entriden in to the `hows of the yong man, enforsiden to take awey the grauun ymage, and the ephod, and theraphin, and the yotun ymage; and the preest stood bifore the dore,
Or les six cents hommes (qui étaient d'entre les Danites) munis de leurs armes de guerre étaient postés à l'entrée de la porte.
17 while sixe hundrid strongeste men abideden not fer.
Alors les cinq hommes qui étaient allés explorer le pays montèrent, entrèrent là, et prirent l'image taillée et l'Ephod et les Théraphims et l'image de fonte; or le prêtre se tenait à l'entrée de la porte comme les six cents hommes munis d'armes de guerre.
18 Therfor thei that entriden token the grauun ymage, ephod, and idols, and the yotun ymage; to whiche the preest seide, What doen ye?
Ceux-là donc pénétrèrent dans la maison de Micha et enlevèrent l'image taillée et l'Ephod et les Théraphims et l'image de fonte.
19 To whom thei answeriden, Be thou stille, and putte the fyngur on thi mouth, and come with vs, that we haue thee fadir and preest. What is betere to thee, that thou be preest in the hows of o man, whether in o lynage and meynee in Israel?
Alors le prêtre leur dit: Que faites-vous? Et ils lui dirent: Tais-toi! mets ta main sur ta bouche et viens avec nous, et sois pour nous un père et un prêtre! Vaut-il mieux pour toi être le prêtre de la maison d'un seul homme, ou bien être le prêtre d'une tribu et d'une race en Israël?
20 And whanne he hadde herd this, he assentide to `the wordis of hem, and he took the ephod, and ydols, and the grauun ymage, and yede forth with hem.
Et cela satisfit le cœur du prêtre, qui prit l'Ephod et les Théraphims et l'image taillée et se mêla à ce peuple.
21 And whanne thei yeden, and hadden maad the litle children, and werk beestis, and al thing that was preciouse, to go bifor hem;
Et ils firent volte-face et partirent en se faisant précéder par les enfants, le bétail et les bagages.
22 and whanne thei weren now fer fro `the hows of Mychas, men that dwelliden in the housis of Mychas, crieden togidere, and sueden,
Ils étaient à distance de la maison de Micha lorsque les gens logés dans les maisons voisines de la maison de Micha se rassemblèrent et se mirent à la poursuite des Danites.
23 and bigunnun to crye `aftir the bak. Whiche whanne thei hadden biholde, seiden to Mychas, What wolt thou to thee? whi criest thou?
Et ils hélèrent les Danites, et ceux-ci tournant la tête dirent à Micha: Que veux-tu avec ta bande?
24 Which answeride, Ye han take awey my goddis whiche Y made to me, and the preest, and alle thingis whiche Y haue; and ye seien, What is to thee?
Et il dit: Vous avez enlevé mes dieux que j'ai faits et le prêtre et vous êtes partis; et que me reste-t-il? et que faites-vous de me dire: que veux-tu?
25 And the sones of Dan seiden to hym, Be war, lest thou speke more to vs, and men styrid in soule come to thee, and thou perische with al thin hows.
Et les Danites lui dirent: Ne nous fais pas entendre ta voix, si tu ne veux pas que des hommes exaspérés fondent sur vous et mettent en danger ta vie et la vie de ta maison.
26 And so thei yeden forth in the iourney bigunnun. Forsothe Mychas siy, that thei weren strongere than he, and turnede ayen in to his hows.
Là-dessus les Danites suivirent leur route, et Micha voyant qu'ils étaient plus forts que lui, fit volte-face et retourna dans sa maison.
27 Forsothe sixe hundrid men token the preest, and the thingis whiche we biforseiden, and camen in to Lachis to the puple restynge and sikur; and thei smytiden hem bi the scharpnesse of swerd, and bitoken the citee to brennyng,
Cependant ils avaient pris l'ouvrage fait par Micha et le prêtre qui était à lui. Ils attaquèrent Laïs, des gens paisibles et pleins de sécurité, et ils les frappèrent avec le tranchant de l'épée et ils incendièrent la ville.
28 while no man outirli yaf help, for thei dwelliden fer fro Sydon, and hadden not ony thing of felouschipe and cause with ony of men. Forsothe the citee was set in the cuntrei of Roob; which citee thei bildiden eft, and dwelliden ther ynne;
Et il n'y eut point de libérateur, car elle était éloignée de Sidon, et ils n'avaient point affaire avec les hommes: or elle était dans la vallée qui avoisine Beth-Rehob. Et ils rebâtirent la ville et s'y établirent.
29 while the name of the citee was clepid Dan, bi the name of her fadir, whom Israel hadde gendrid, which citee was seid Lachis bifore.
Et ils nommèrent la ville Dan du nom de Dan, leur père, qui était né à Israël; mais Laïs était primitivement le nom de la ville.
30 And `thei settiden there the grauun ymage, and Jonathas, sone of Jerson, sone of Moises, and `Jonathas sones, preestis, in the lynage of Dan, til in to the dai of her caitifte.
Et les Danites érigèrent l'image pour leur usage, et Jonathan, fils de Gersom, fils de Moïse, lui et ses fils furent prêtres de la Tribu des Danites jusqu'à l'époque de la captivité du pays.
31 And the idol of Mychas dwellide at hem, in al the tyme `in which the hows of God was in Silo. In tho daies was no kyng in Israel.
Et l'image faite par Micha resta debout pour leur usage pendant tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo.
