Judges 12

1 `Lo! forsothe discencioun roos in Effraym; for whi thei, that passiden ayens the north, seiden to Jepte, Whi yedist thou to batel ayens the sones of Amon, and noldist clepe vs, that we schulden go with thee? Therfor we schulen brenne thin hows.

Et les hommes d'Ephraïm se rassemblèrent, et montèrent vers le nord et dirent à Jephthé: Pourquoi t'es-tu mis en marche pour la guerre des Ammonites sans nous appeler à faire la campagne avec toi?

2 To whiche he answeride, Greet strijf was to me and to my puple ayens the sones of Amon, and Y clepide you, that ye schulden `yyue help to me, and ye nolden do.

Nous allons brûler par le feu ta maison sur toi. Et Jephthé leur dit: J'étais en grande contestation, moi et mon peuple, avec les Ammonites, et je vous fis un appel, mais vous ne m'avez pas aidé à me tirer de leurs mains.

3 `Which thing Y siy, and puttide my lijf in myn hondis; and Y passide to the sones of Amon, and `the Lord bitook hem in to myn hondis; what haue Y disseruyd, that ye ryse togidere ayens me in to batel?

Et voyant que vous ne vouliez pas m'aider, j'osai, au péril de ma vie, marcher contre les Ammonites. Et l'Éternel les a livrés entre mes mains. Pourquoi donc aujourd'hui vous avancer contre moi pour me faire la guerre?

4 Therfor whanne alle the men of Galaad weren clepid to hym, he fauyt ayens Effraym; and the men of Galaad smytiden Effraym; for he seide, Galaad is `fugitif ether exilid fro Effraym, and dwellith in the myddis of Effraym and of Manasses.

Et Jephthé réunit tous les hommes de Galaad, et il en vint aux mains avec les Ephraïmites, et les hommes de Galaad défirent ceux d'Ephraïm, car ils disaient: Gens de Galaad, vous êtes des réchappés d'Ephraïm, un juste milieu entre Ephraïm et Manassé.

5 And the men of Galaad ocupieden the forthis of Jordan, bi whiche Effraym schulden turne ayen. And whanne a man fleynge of the noumbre of Effraym hadde come to tho forthis, and hadde seid, Y biseche, that thou suffre me passe; men of Galaad seiden to hym, Whether thou art a man of Effraym? And whanne he seide, Y am not,

Et les Galaadites s'emparèrent des gués du Jourdain vers Ephraïm. Et lorsque quelqu'un des fuyards d'Ephraïm disait: Laissez-moi passer! les hommes de Galaad lui demandaient: Es-tu Ephraïmite? et celui-ci répondant: Non!

6 thei axiden hym, Seie thou therfor Sebolech, `whiche is interpretid, `an eer of corn. Which answeride, Thebolech, and myyte not brynge forth an eer of corn bi the same lettre. And anoon thei strangeliden hym takun in thilke passyng of Jordan; and two and fourti thousynde of Effraym felden doun in that tyme.

ils lui disaient: Prononce donc Schibboleth! Et s'il prononçait Sibboleth, sans s'aviser pour prononcer bien, ils le saisissaient et l'égorgeaient dans le gué du Jourdain. Et dans ce temps-là il périt quarante-deux mille Ephraïmites.

7 And so Jepte, `a man of Galaad, demyde Israel sixe yeer; and he `was deed, and biried in his citee Galaad.

Et Jephthé jugea Israël pendant six ans; puis Jephthé de Galaad mourut, et il reçut la sépulture dans l'une des villes de Galaad.

8 Abethsan of Bethleem, that hadde thretti sones, and so many douytris, demyde Israel aftir Jepte;

Et après lui Ibtsan de Bethléhem jugea Israël.

9 whiche douytris he sente out, and yaf to hosebondis, and he took wyues to hise sones of the same noumbre, and brouyte in to hys hows; which demyde Israel seuene yeer;

Et il eut trente fils et il maria ses trente fils au dehors, et du dehors il introduisit chez lui pour ses fils trente filles, et il jugea Israël pendant sept ans;

10 and he `was deed, and biried in Bethleem.

puis Ibtsan mourut, et reçut la sépulture à Bethléhem.

11 Whos successour was Hailon of Zabulon; and he demyde Israel ten yeer;

Et après lui Elon de Zabulon fut Juge d'Israël, et il jugea Israël pendant dix ans;

12 and he was deed, and biried in Zabulon.

puis Elon de Zabulon mourut et reçut la sépulture à Ajalon dans le pays de Zabulon.

13 Aftir hym Abdon, the sone of Ellel, of Pharaton, demyde Israel;

Et après lui Abdon, fils de Hillel, de Pirathon, jugea Israël.

14 which Abdon hadde fourti sones, and of hem thretti sones, stiynge on seuenti coltis of femal assis, `that is, mulis, and he demyde Israel eiyte yeer;

Et il eut quarante fils et trente petits-fils qui montaient soixante-dix ânes poulains. Et il jugea Israël pendant huit ans.

15 and he `was deed, and biried in Pharaton, in the loond of Effraym, in the hil of Amalech.

Puis Abdon, fils de Hillel, de Pirathon, mourut et reçut la sépulture à Pirathon, dans le pays d'Ephraïm, sur le mont Amalécite.
