Joshua 2
1 Therfor Josue, the sone of Nun, sente fro Sethym twei men, aspieris in hiddlis, and seide to hem, Go ye, and biholde ye the lond, and the citee of Jerico. Whiche yeden, and entriden into the hous of a womman hoore, `Raab bi name, and restiden at hir.
Et Josué, fils de Nun, envoya secrètement de Sittim deux éclaireurs avec cette instruction: Allez explorer le pays, surtout Jéricho. Et ils partirent et arrivèrent chez une courtisane nommée Rahab, et y couchèrent.
2 And it was teld, `and seid to the kyng of Jerico, Lo! men of the sones of Israel entriden hidir bi nyyt, to aspie the lond.
Et l'avis en fut donné au Roi de Jéricho en ces termes: Voilà que cette nuit il est arrivé ici deux hommes de la part des enfants d'Israël pour reconnaître le pays.
3 Therfor the kyng of Jerico sente to Raab the hoore, and seide, Brynge out the men, that camen to thee, and entriden in to thin hous; for thei ben aspieris, and thei camen to biholde al the lond.
Alors le Roi de Jéricho fit faire ce message à Rahab: Livre les hommes arrivés chez toi et introduits dans ta maison, car c'est pour explorer tout le pays qu'ils sont venus.
4 And the womman took the men, and hidde hem, and seide, Y knowleche, thei camen to me, but Y wiste not of whenus thei weren;
Mais cette femme prit les deux hommes et les cacha et dit: En effet, ces hommes sont arrivés chez moi, mais sans que je sache d'où ils sont,
5 and whanne the yate was closid in derknessis, and thei yeden out to gidire, Y noot whidur thei yeden; pursue ye soone, and ye schulen take hem.
et comme la porte allait être fermée à la tombée de la nuit, ces hommes s'en sont allés; j'ignore où ils se sont rendus; courez vite après eux, car vous les atteindrez.
6 Forsothe sche made the men to stie in to the soler of hir hows, and hilide hem with stobil of flex, that was there.
Or elle les avait fait monter sur le toit et cachés sous des tiges de lin étendues par elle sur le toit.
7 Sotheli thei, that weren sent, sueden hem bi the weie that ledith to the fordis of Jordan; and whanne thei weren goon out, anoon the yate was closid.
Et ces gens se mirent à leur poursuite sur le chemin qui mène au Jourdain par les gués, et l'on ferma la porte après la sortie des gens qui allaient à leur poursuite.
8 Thei that weren hid, slepten not yit, and lo! the womman stiede to hem, and seide,
Et avant qu'ils se couchassent, elle monta vers eux sur le toit,
9 Y knowe that the Lord hath bitake to you this lond; for youre feerdfulnesse felde in to vs, and alle the dwelleris of the lond `weren sike.
et elle dit à ces hommes: Je sais que l'Éternel vous a donné le pays; et que vous nous inspirez la terreur et que tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant vous.
10 We herden, that the Lord driede the watris of the Reed See at youre entryng, whanne ye yeden out of Egipt; and what thingis ye diden to twei kyngis of Ammorreis, that weren biyende Jordan, to Seon and Og, whiche ye killiden;
Car nous avons appris comment l'Éternel a desséché les eaux de la Mer aux algues devant vous lorsque vous sortiez de l'Egypte, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amoréens au delà du Jourdain, Sihon et Og, que vous avez dévoués.
11 and we herden these thingis, and we dredden, and oure herte `was sike, and spirit dwellide not in vs at youre entryng; for youre Lord God hym silf is God in heuene aboue, and in erthe bynethe.
A cette nouvelle notre cœur a été déconcerté, et il n'existe plus chez personne aucun courage pour vous tenir tête, car c'est l'Éternel, votre Dieu, qui est Dieu, en haut dans les Cieux, et en bas sur la terre.
12 Now therfor swere ye to me bi the Lord God, that as Y dide merci with you, so and ye do with the hows of my fadir; and yyue ye to me a veri signe,
A présent jurez-moi donc par l'Éternel, que comme je vous ai montré de la bonté, vous montrerez aussi de la bonté à la maison de mon père, et donnez-moi une preuve de loyauté,
13 that ye saue my fadir and modir, and my britheren and sistris, and alle thingis that ben herne, and dilyuere oure lyues fro deeth.
et laissez la vie à mon père et à ma mère et à mes frères et à mes sœurs et à tous ceux qui leur appartiennent, et sauvez nos âmes de la mort.
14 Whiche answeriden to hir, Oure lijf be for you in to deeth, if netheles thou bitraiest not vs; and whanne the Lord hath bitake to vs the lond, we schulen do mercy and treuthe in thee.
Et ces hommes lui dirent: Que nos âmes soient livrées à la mort pour vous! Si vous ne dénoncez pas notre démarche présente, nous agirons envers toi, quand l'Éternel nous livrera le pays, avec bonté et bonne foi.
15 Therfor sche let hem doun fro the wyndow bi a corde; for hir hows cleuyde to the wal.
Alors au moyen d'une corde, elle les dévala par la fenêtre, car sa maison était sur la muraille de la ville, et elle logeait sur la muraille de la ville.
16 And sche seide to hem, Stie ye to the hilli places, lest perauenture men turnynge ayen meete you; and be ye hidde there three daies, til thei comen ayen; and so ye schulen go bi youre weie.
Et elle leur dit: Gagnez la montagne pour n'être pas atteints par ceux qui vous poursuivent, et restez-y cachés trois jours jusqu'au retour des gens qui sont à votre poursuite, et ensuite continuez votre route.
17 Whiche seiden to hir, We schulen be giltles of this ooth, bi which thou hast chargid vs,
Et ces hommes lui dirent: Nous allons nous acquitter du serment que tu nous as fait faire.
18 if, whanne we entren in to the lond, this reed corde is not a signe, and thou byndist it not in the wyndow, bi which thou lettist vs doun; and thou gaderist not in to thi hows thi fadir and modir, and britheren, and al thi kynrede; the blood of hym schal be on his heed,
Voici, à notre entrée dans le pays attache ce cordon rouge à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous as dévalés et recueille chez toi dans ton logis ton père et ta mère et tes frères et toute la maison de ton père,
19 that goith out at the dore of thin hows, and we schulen be alien, that is, giltles; forsothe the blood of alle men that ben in the hows with thee, schal turne in to oure heed, if ony man touchith hem.
et si quelqu'un d'eux passe la porte de ta maison et paraît dans la rue, c'est sur sa tête que retombera la faute de sa mort, et nous-mêmes nous en serons innocents; mais si on met la main sur aucun de ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, la faute de sa mort retombera sur notre tête.
20 `That if thou wolt betraie vs, and brynge forth in to the myddis this word, we schulen be cleene of this ooth, bi which thou hast chargid vs.
Et si tu dénonces notre démarche présente, nous sommes déliés envers toi du serment que tu as exigé de nous.
21 And sche answeride, As ye han spoke, so be it doon. And sche lefte hem, that thei schulden go, and sche hangide a reed corde in her wyndow.
Et elle dit: Comme vous le dites, ainsi soit fait; et elle les congédia, et ils partirent. Et elle attacha le cordon rouge à la fenêtre.
22 Sotheli thei yeden, and camen to the hilli places, and dwelliden there three daies, til thei turneden ayen that pursueden; for thei souyten bi ech weie, and founden not hem.
Étant donc partis, ils arrivèrent à la montagne où ils restèrent trois jours jusqu'au retour de ceux qui les poursuivaient. Et ceux-ci les cherchèrent sur toute la route, mais ne les trouvèrent pas.
23 And whanne the sekeris entriden in to the citee, the spieris turneden ayen, and camen doun fro the hille; and whanne thei hadde passid Jordan, thei camen to Josue, the sone of Nun;
Alors les deux hommes s'en retournant descendirent la montagne et repassèrent [le Jourdain]; et étant venus auprès de Josué, fils de Nun, ils lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était avenu.
24 and thei telden to hym alle thingis that bifelden to hem, and seiden, The Lord hath bitake al the lond in to oure hondis, and alle the dwelleris thereof ben casten doun bi drede.
Et ils dirent à Josué: Oui, l'Éternel a livré tout ce pays entre nos mains, et même devant nous tous les habitants du pays tremblent.
