Jonah 1
1 And the word of the Lord was maad to Jonas,
Có lời Đức Giê-hô-va phán cho Giô-na con trai A-mi-tai như vầy:
2 sone of Amathi, and seide, Rise thou, and go in to Nynyue, the greet citee, and preche thou ther ynne, for the malice therof stieth vp bifore me.
Ngươi khá chổi dậy! Hãy đi đến thành lớn Ni-ni-ve, và kêu la nghịch cùng nó; vì tội ác chúng nó đã lên thấu trước mặt ta.
3 And Jonas roos for to fle in to Tharsis, fro the face of the Lord. And he cam doun to Joppe, and foond a schip goynge in to Tharsis, and he yaf schip hire to hem; and he wente doun in to it, for to go with hem in to Tharsis, fro the face of the Lord.
Nhưng Giô-na chổi dậy đặng trốn qua Ta-rê-si, để lánh khỏi mặt Đức Giê-hô-va. Người xuống đến Gia-phô, gặp một chiếc tàu đi Ta-rê-si. Người trả tiền quá giang, và xuống tàu đặng đi Ta-rê-si với họ, để khỏi mặt Đức Giê-hô-va.
4 Forsothe the Lord sente a greet wynd in the see, and a greet tempest was maad in the see, and the schip was in perel for to be al to-brokun.
Nhưng Đức Giê-hô-va khiến gió lớn thổi trên biển; trên biển có trận bão lớn, chiếc tàu hầu vỡ.
5 And schip men dredden, and men crieden to her god; and senten vessels, that weren in the schip, in to the see, that it were maad liytere of hem. And Jonas wente doun in to the ynnere thingis of the schip, and slepte bi a greuouse sleep.
Những thủy thủ đều sợ hãi, ai nấy kêu cầu thần của mình. Đoạn, họ quăng những đồ đạc trong tàu xuống biển, để cho nhẹ tàu. Giô-na đã xuống dưới lòng tàu, nằm và ngủ mê.
6 And the gouernour cam to him, and seide to hym, Whi art thou cast doun in sleep? rise thou, clepe thi God to help, if perauenture God ayenthenke of vs, and we perische not.
Chủ tàu bèn đến gần người và bảo rằng: Hỡi người ngủ kia, làm sao vậy? Khá chờ dậy! Hãy kêu cầu Đức Chúa Trời ngươi. Có lẽ Đức Chúa Trời sẽ tưởng đến chúng ta, thì chúng ta khỏi chết.
7 And a man seide to his felowe, Come ye, and caste we lottis, and wite we, whi this yuel is to vs. And thei kesten lottis, and lot felle on Jonas.
Kế đó, chúng nói cùng nhau rằng: Hãy đến, chúng ta hãy bắt thăm, để cho biết tai vạ nầy đến cho chúng ta là vì cớ ai. Vậy họ bắt thăm, và thăm trúng nhằm Giô-na.
8 And thei seiden to hym, Schewe thou to vs, for cause of what thing this yuel is to vs; what is thi werk, which is thi lond, and whidur goist thou, ether of what puple art thou?
Bấy giờ họ nói cùng người rằng: Khá cho chúng ta biết vì điều chi mà tai vạ nầy đến trên chúng ta. Ngươi làm nghề gì, và từ đâu mà đến? Xứ ngươi ở đâu, ngươi thuộc về dân nào?
9 And he seide to hem, Y am an Ebrew, and Y drede the Lord God of heuene, that made the see and the drie lond.
Người trả lời rằng: Ta là người Hê-bơ-rơ, và ta kính sợ, Đức Giê-hô-va, là Đức Chúa Trời trên trời, Ngài đã làm nên biển và đất khô.
10 And the men dredden with greet drede, and seiden to him, Whi didist thou this thing? for the men knewen that he flei fro the face of the Lord, for Jonas hadde schewide to hem.
Những người ấy cả sợ, và bảo người rằng: Ngươi đã làm việc gì đó? Bấy giờ họ đã biết rằng người trốn khỏi mặt Đức Giê-hô-va; vì người đã khai ra cho họ.
11 And thei seiden to hym, What schulen we do to thee, and the see schal seesse fro vs? for the see wente, and wexe greet on hem.
Vậy họ nói rằng: Chúng ta sẽ làm gì về ngươi, hầu cho biển yên lặng cho chúng ta? Vì biển càng động thêm mãi.
12 And he seide to hem, Take ye me, and throwe in to the see, and the see schal ceesse fro you; for Y woot, that for me this greet tempest is on you.
Người trả lời rằng: Hãy bắt lấy ta; hãy ném ta xuống biển, thì biển yên lặng cho các anh; vì ta biết rằng ấy là vì cớ ta mà các anh đã gặp phải trận bão lớn nầy.
13 And men rowiden, for to turne ayen to the drie lond, and thei miyten not, for the see wente, and wexe greet on hem.
Những người ấy bắt tay chèo vào bờ; song không được, vì biển càng nổi lên nghịch cùng họ mãi.
14 And thei crieden to the Lord, and seiden, Lord, we bisechen, that we perische not in the lijf of this man, and that thou yyue not on vs innocent blood; for thou, Lord, didist as thou woldist.
Họ bèn kêu cầu Đức Giê-hô-va mà rằng: Hỡi Đức Giê-hô-va, chúng tôi nài xin Ngài, chúng tôi nài xin Ngài chớ làm cho chúng tôi chết vì cớ mạng sống của người nầy, và chớ khiến máu vô tội đổ lại trên chúng tôi! Hỡi Đức Giê-hô-va, vì chính Ngài là Đấng đã làm điều mình muốn.
15 And thei token Jonas, and threwen in to the see; and the see stood of his buylyng.
Đoạn họ bắt Giô-na, quăng xuống biển, thì sự giận dữ của biển yên lặng.
16 And the men dredden the Lord with greet drede, and offriden oostis to the Lord, and vowiden avowis.
Vì vậy mà những người ấy rất kính sợ Đức Giê-hô-va. Họ dâng của lễ cho Đức Giê-hô-va, và hứa nguyện cùng Ngài.
17 And the Lord made redi a greet fisch, that he shulde swolowe Jonas; and Jonas was in the wombe of the fisch thre daies and thre niytis.
Đức Giê-hô-va sắm sửa một con cá lớn đặng nuốt Giô-na; Giô-na ở trong bụng cá ba ngày ba đêm.
