Job 9
1 Joob answeride, and seide, Verili Y woot, that it is so,
Mais Job répondit, et dit:
2 and that a man comparisound to God schal not be maad iust.
Certainement je sais que cela est ainsi; et comment l'homme [mortel] se justifierait-il devant le [Dieu] Fort?
3 If he wole stryue with God, he may not answere to God oon for a thousynde.
Si [Dieu] veut plaider avec lui, de mille articles il ne saurait lui répondre sur un seul.
4 He is wiys in herte, and strong in myyt; who ayenstood hym, and hadde pees?
[Dieu] est sage de cœur, et puissant en force. Qui est-ce qui s'est opposé à lui, et s'en est bien trouvé?
5 Which bar hillis fro o place to anothir, and thei wisten not; whiche he distriede in his strong veniaunce.
Il transporte les montagnes, et quand il les renverse en sa fureur, elles n'en connaissent rien.
6 Which stirith the erthe fro his place, and the pilers therof schulen `be schakun togidere.
Il remue la terre de sa place, et ses piliers sont ébranlés.
7 Which comaundith to the sunne, and it risith not; and he closith the sterris, as vndur a signet.
Il parle au soleil, et le soleil ne se lève point; et c'est lui qui tient les étoiles sous son cachet.
8 Which aloone stretchith forth heuenes, and goith on the wawis of the see.
C'est lui seul qui étend les cieux; qui marche sur les hauteurs de la mer;
9 Which makith Ariture, and Orionas, and Hiadas, `that is, seuene sterris, and the innere thingis of the south.
Qui a fait le chariot, et l'Orion, et la Poussinière, et les signes qui sont au fond du Midi;
10 Which makith grete thingis, and that moun not be souyt out, and wondurful thingis, of whiche is noon noumbre.
Qui fait des choses si grandes qu'on ne les peut sonder; et tant de choses merveilleuses, qu'on ne les peut compter.
11 If he cometh to me, `that is, bi his grace, Y schal not se hym; if he goith awey, `that is, in withdrawynge his grace, Y schal not vndurstonde.
Voici, il passera près de moi, et je ne le verrai point; et il repassera, et je ne l'apercevrai point.
12 If he axith sodeynli, who schal answere to hym? ethir who may seie to hym, Whi doist thou so?
Voilà, s'il ravit, qui le lui fera rendre? et qui est-ce qui lui dira: Que fais-tu?
13 `God is he, whos wraththe no man may withstonde; and vndur whom thei ben bowid, that beren the world.
Dieu ne retire point sa colère, et les hommes superbes qui viennent au secours, sont abattus sous lui.
14 Hou greet am Y, that Y answere to hym, and speke bi my wordis with hym?
Combien moins lui répondrais-je, moi et arrangerais-je mes paroles contre lui?
15 Which also schal not answere, thouy Y haue ony thing iust; but Y schal biseche my iuge.
Moi, je ne lui répondrai point, quand même je serais juste, [mais] je demanderai grâce à mon juge.
16 And whanne he hath herd me inwardli clepynge, Y bileue not, that he hath herd my vois.
Si je l'invoque, et qu'il me réponde, [encore] ne croirai-je point qu'il ait écouté ma voix.
17 For in a whirlewynd he schal al to-breke me, and he schal multiplie my woundis, yhe, without cause.
Car il m'a écrasé du milieu d'un tourbillon, et il a ajouté plaie sur plaie, sans que je l'aie mérité.
18 He grauntith not, that my spirit haue reste, and he fillith me with bittirnesses.
Il ne me permet point de reprendre haleine, mais il me remplit d'amertumes.
19 If strengthe is souyt, `he is moost strong; if equyte of doom is souyt, no man dar yelde witnessynge for me.
S'il est question de savoir qui est le plus fort; voilà, il est fort; et [s'il est question d'aller] en justice, qui est-ce qui m'y fera comparaître?
20 If Y wole make me iust, my mouth schal dampne me; if Y schal schewe me innocent, he schal preue me a schrewe.
Si je me justifie, ma propre bouche me condamnera; [si je me fais] parfait, il me convaincra d'être coupable.
21 Yhe, thouy Y am symple, my soule schal not knowe this same thing; and it schal anoye me of my lijf.
Quand je serais parfait, je ne me soucierais pas de vivre, je dédaignerais la vie.
22 O thing is, which Y spak, he schal waste `bi deth also the innocent and wickid man.
Tout revient à un; c'est pourquoi j'ai dit qu'il consume l'homme juste et le méchant.
23 If he betith, sle he onys, and leiye he not of the peynes of innocent men.
[Au moins] si le fléau [dont il frappe] faisait mourir tout aussitôt; [mais] il se rit de l'épreuve des innocents.
24 The erthe is youun in to the hondis of the wickid; he hilith the face of iugis; that if he is not, who therfor is?
[C'est par lui que] la terre est livrée entre les mains du méchant; c'est lui qui couvre la face des juges de la [terre]; et si ce n'est pas lui, qui est-ce donc?
25 Mi daies weren swiftere than a corour; thei fledden, and sien not good.
Or mes jours ont été plus vite qu'un courrier; ils s'en sont fuis, et n'ont point vu de bien.
26 Thei passiden as schippis berynge applis, as an egle fleynge to mete.
Ils ont passé [comme] des barques de poste; comme un aigle qui vole après la proie.
27 Whanne Y seie, Y schal not speke so; Y chaunge my face, and Y am turmentid with sorewe.
Si je dis: J'oublierai ma plainte, je renoncerai à ma colère, je me fortifierai;
28 Y drede alle my werkis, witynge that thou `woldist not spare the trespassour.
Je suis épouvanté de tous mes tourments. Je sais que tu ne me jugeras point innocent.
29 Sotheli if Y am also thus wickid, whi haue Y trauelid in veyn?
Je serai [trouvé] méchant; pourquoi travaillerais-je en vain?
30 Thouy Y am waischun as with watris of snow, and thouy myn hondis schynen as moost cleene,
Si je me lave dans de l'eau de neige, et que je nettoie mes mains dans la pureté,
31 netheles thou schalt dippe me in filthis, and my clothis, `that is, werkis, schulen holde me abhomynable.
Alors tu me plongeras dans un fossé, et mes vêtements m'auront en horreur.
32 Trewli Y schal not answere a man, which is lijk me; nether that may be herd euenli with me in doom.
Car il n'est pas comme moi un homme, pour que je lui réponde, [et] que nous allions ensemble en jugement.
33 `Noon is, that may repreue euer eithir, and sette his hond in bothe.
[Mais] il n'y a personne qui prît connaissance de la cause qui serait entre nous, [et] qui mît la main sur nous deux.
34 Do he awei his yerde fro me, and his drede make not me aferd.
Qu'il ôte [donc] sa verge de dessus moi, et que la frayeur que j'ai de lui ne me trouble plus.
35 Y schal speke, and Y schal not drede hym; for Y may not answere dredynge.
Je parlerai, et je ne le craindrai point; mais dans l'état où je suis je ne suis point à moi-même.
