Job 4
1 Forsothe Eliphat Themanytes answeride, and seide,
Or, répondant, Eliphaz, Thémanite, dit:
2 If we bigynnen to speke to thee, in hap thou schalt take it heuyli; but who may holde a word conseyued?
Si nous commençons à te parler, peut-être le supporteras-tu avec peine; mais qui pourrait retenir les paroles qu’il a conçues?
3 Lo! thou hast tauyt ful many men, and thou hast strengthid hondis maad feynt.
Voilà que tu as instruit un grand nombre de personnes et fortifié des mains affaiblies.
4 Thi wordis confermyden men doutynge, and thou coumfortidist knees tremblynge.
Tes discours ont affermi ceux qui vacillaient, et tu as fortifié les genoux tremblants.
5 But now a wounde is comun on thee, and thou hast failid; it touchide thee, and thou art disturblid.
Mais maintenant la plaie est venue sur toi, et tu as perdu courage; elle t’a touché, et tu es troublé.
6 Where is thi drede, thi strengthe, and thi pacience, and the perfeccioun of thi weies?
Où donc est ta crainte de Dieu, ta force, ta patience, la perfection de tes voies?
7 Y biseche thee, haue thou mynde, what innocent man perischide euere, ethir whanne riytful men weren doon awei?
Cherche dans ton souvenir, je t’en conjure; qui a jamais péri innocent? ou quand des justes ont-ils été exterminés?
8 Certis rathir Y siy hem, that worchen wickidnesse, and sowen sorewis,
Mais plutôt j’ai vu que ceux qui opèrent l’iniquité, sèment des douleurs et les moissonnent.
9 and repen tho, to haue perischid bi God blowynge, and to be wastid bi the spirit of his ire.
Ont péri au souffle de Dieu, et que par le vent de sa colère ils ont été consumés.
10 The roryng of a lioun, and the vois of a lionesse, and the teeth of `whelpis of liouns ben al to-brokun.
Le rugissement du lion, et la voix de la lionne et les dents des petits lions ont été brisés.
11 Tigris perischide, for sche hadde not prey; and the whelpis of a lioun ben distried.
Le tigre a péri, parce qu’il n’avait pas de proie, et les petits du lion ont été dissipés.
12 Certis an hid word was seid to me, and myn eere took as theueli the veynes of priuy noise therof.
Cependant une parole secrète m’a été dite, et mon oreille a saisi comme furtivement la suite de sa susurration.
13 In the hidousnesse of `nyytis siyt, whanne heuy sleep is wont to occupie men,
Dans l’horreur d’une vision nocturne, quand le sommeil a coutume de s’emparer des hommes,
14 drede and tremblyng helde me; and alle my boonys weren aferd.
L’effroi me saisit, et un tremblement; et tous mes os furent glacés d’épouvante.
15 And whanne the spirit `yede in my presence, the heiris of `my fleisch hadden hidousnesse.
Et comme un esprit passait, moi présent, les poils de ma chair se hérissèrent.
16 Oon stood, whos chere Y knewe not, an ymage bifor myn iyen; and Y herde a vois as of softe wynd.
Il s’arrêta quelqu’un dont je ne connaissais pas le visage, un spectre devant mes yeux, et j’entendis sa voix comme un léger souffle:
17 Whether a man schal be maad iust in comparisoun of God? ethir whethir a man schal be clennere than his Makere?
Est-ce qu’un mortel, comparé à Dieu, sera trouvé juste, ou un homme sera-t-il plus juste que son créateur?
18 Lo! thei that seruen hym ben not stidefast; and he findith schrewidnesse in hise aungels.
Voilà que ceux qui le servent ne sont pas stables, et même dans ses anges il a trouvé de la dépravation.
19 Hou myche more thei that dwellen in housis of cley, that han an ertheli foundement, schulen be wastyd as of a mouyte.
Combien plus ceux qui habitent des maisons de boue, qui ont un fondement de terre, seront comme rongés de vers!
20 Fro morewtid til to euentid thei schulen be kit doun; and for no man vndurstondith, thei schulen perische with outen ende.
Du matin au soir, ils seront moissonnés; parce que nul n’a l’intelligence, ils périront éternellement.
21 Sotheli thei, that ben residue, schulen be takun awei; thei schulen die, and not in wisdom.
Ceux mêmes qui sont restés d’entre eux seront emportés; ils mourront, mais non dans la sagesse.
