Job 28
1 Siluer hath bigynnyngis of his veynes; and a place is to gold, in which it is wellid togidere.
»Denn wohl gibt es für das Silber einen Fundort und eine Stätte für das Golderz, wo man es auswäscht.
2 Irun is takun fro erthe, and a stoon resolued, `ethir meltid, bi heete, is turned in to money.
Eisen wird aus der Erde herausgeholt, und Gestein schmelzt man zu Kupfer um.
3 God hath set tyme to derknessis, and he biholdith the ende of alle thingis.
Der Finsternis hat (der Mensch) ein Ziel gesetzt, und bis in die äußersten Tiefen durchforscht das in Nacht und Grauen verborgene Gestein.
4 Also a stronde departith a stoon of derknesse, and the schadewe of deth, fro the puple goynge in pilgrymage; it departith tho hillis, whiche the foot of a nedi man foryat, and hillis with out weie.
Man bricht einen Stollen fern von den im Licht Wohnenden; vergessen und fern vom Fuß der über ihnen Hinschreitenden hangen sie da (an Seilen), fern von den Menschen schweben sie.
5 The erthe, wher of breed cam forth in his place, is destried bi fier.
Die Erde, aus welcher Brotkorn hervorwächst, wird in der Tiefe umgewühlt wie mit Feuer.
6 The place of saphir ben stoonys therof, and the clottis therof ben gold.
Man findet Saphir im Gestein und Staub, darin Gold ist.
7 A brid knewe not the weie, and the iye of a vultur, ethir rauenouse brid, bihelde it not.
Den Pfad dorthin kennt der Adler nicht, und das Auge des Falken hat ihn nicht erspäht;
8 The sones of marchauntis tretiden not on it, and a lyonesse passide not therbi.
nicht betreten ihn die stolzen Raubtiere, noch schreitet der Leu auf ihm einher.
9 God stretchide forth his hond to a flynt; he distriede hillis fro the rootis.
An das harte Gestein legt (der Mensch) seine Hand, wühlt die Berge um von der Wurzel aus;
10 He hewide doun ryuers in stoonys; and his iye siy al precious thing.
in die Felsen bricht er Schächte, und allerlei Kostbares erblickt sein Auge.
11 And he souyte out the depthis of floodis; and he brouyte forth hid thingis in to liyt.
Die Wasseradern verbaut er, daß sie nicht durchsickern, und zieht so die verborgenen Schätze ans Licht hervor.«
12 But where is wisdom foundun, and which is the place of vndurstondyng?
»Die Weisheit aber – wo findet man diese? und wo ist die Fundstätte der Erkenntnis?
13 A man noot the prijs therof, nether it is foundun in the lond of men lyuynge swetli, `ether delicatli.
Kein Mensch kennt den Weg zu ihr, und im Lande der Lebendigen ist sie nicht zu finden.
14 The depthe of watris seith, It is not in me; and the see spekith, It is not with me.
Die Flut der Tiefe sagt: ›In mir ist sie nicht‹; und das Meer erklärt: ›Bei mir weilt sie nicht‹.
15 Gold ful cleene schal not be youun for wisdom, nether siluer schal be weied in the chaungyng therof.
Für geläutertes Gold ist sie nicht feil, und Silber kann nicht als Kaufpreis für sie dargewogen werden;
16 It schal not be comparysound to the died colours of Iynde, not to the moost preciouse stoon of sardius, nether to saphir.
sie läßt sich nicht aufwägen mit Feingold von Ophir, mit kostbarem Onyx und Saphir.
17 Nether gold, nether glas schal be maad euene worth therto;
Gold und Prachtglas kann man ihr nicht gleichstellen, noch sie eintauschen gegen Kunstwerke von gediegenem Gold;
18 and hiye and fer apperynge vessels of gold schulen not be chaungid for wisdom, nether schulen be had in mynde in comparisoun therof. Forsothe wisdom is drawun of pryuy thingis;
Korallen und Kristall kommen (neben ihr) nicht in Betracht, und der Besitz der Weisheit ist mehr wert als Perlen.
19 topasie of Ethiope schal not be maad euene worth to wisdom, and moost preciouse diyngis schulen not be set togidere in prijs, `ether comparisound, therto.
Äthiopiens Topas reicht nicht an sie heran, mit reinstem Feingold wird sie nicht aufgewogen.
20 Therfor wherof cometh wisdom, and which is the place of vndurstondyng?
Die Weisheit also – woher kommt sie, und wo ist die Fundstätte der Erkenntnis?
21 It is hid fro the iyen of alle lyuynge men; also it is hid fro briddis of heuene.
Verborgen ist sie vor den Augen aller lebenden Wesen und verhüllt sogar vor den Vögeln des Himmels.
22 Perdicioun and deeth seiden, With oure eeris we herden the fame therof.
Die Unterwelt und das Totenreich sagen von ihr: ›Nur ein Gerücht von ihr ist uns zu Ohren gedrungen.‹«
23 God vndurstondith the weye therof, and he knowith the place therof.
»Gott hat den Weg zu ihr (allein) erschaut, und er kennt ihre Fundstätte;
24 For he biholdith the endis of the world, and biholdith alle thingis that ben vndur heuene.
denn er blickt bis zu den Enden der Erde und sieht, was unter dem ganzen Himmel ist.
25 `Which God made weiyte to wyndis, and weiede watris in mesure.
Als er dem Winde seine Wucht bestimmte und die Wasser mit dem Maß abwog,
26 Whanne he settide lawe to reyn, and weie to tempestis sownynge;
als er dem Regen sein Gesetz vorschrieb und dem Wetterstrahl die Bahn anwies:
27 thanne he siy wisdom, and telde out, and made redi, and souyte out.
da sah er sie und betätigte sie, setzte sie ein und erforschte sie auch.
28 And he seide to man, Lo! the drede of the Lord, thilke is wisdom; and to go awei fro yuel, is vndurstondyng.
Zu dem Menschen aber sprach er: ›Wisse wohl: die Furcht vor dem Allherrn – das ist Weisheit, und das Böse meiden – das ist Verstand!‹«
