Jeremiah 34
1 The word that was maad of the Lord to Jeremye, whanne Nabugodonosor, kyng of Babiloyne, and al his oost, and alle the rewmes of erthe, that weren vndur the power of his hond, and alle puplis fouyten ayens Jerusalem, and ayens alle citees therof; and he seide,
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l’Éternel, en ces mots, lorsque Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, avec toute son armée, et tous les royaumes des pays sous sa domination, et tous les peuples, faisaient la guerre à Jérusalem et à toutes les villes qui en dépendaient:
2 The Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, Go thou, and speke to Sedechie, kyng of Juda; and thou schalt seie to hym, The Lord seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal bitake this citee in to the hond of the kyng of Babiloyne, and he schal brenne it bi fier.
Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël: Va, et dis à Sédécias, roi de Juda, dis-lui: Ainsi parle l’Éternel: Voici, je livre cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone, et il la brûlera par le feu.
3 And thou schalt not ascape fro his hond, but thou schalt be takun bi takyng, and thou schalt be bitakun in to his hond; and thin iyen schulen se the iyen of the kyng of Babiloyne, and his mouth schal speke with thi mouth, and thou schalt entre in to Babiloyne.
Et toi, tu n’échapperas pas à ses mains, mais tu seras pris et livré entre ses mains, tes yeux verront les yeux du roi de Babylone, et il te parlera bouche à bouche, et tu iras à Babylone.
4 Netheles Sedechie, the kyng of Juda, here thou the word of the Lord; the Lord seith these thingis to thee, Thou schalt not die bi swerd,
Seulement écoute la parole de l’Éternel, Sédécias, roi de Juda! Ainsi parle l’Éternel sur toi: Tu ne mourras point par l’épée.
5 but thou schalt die in pees, and bi the brennyngis of thi fadris, the formere kyngis that weren bifore thee, so thei schulen brenne thee, and thei schulen biweile thee, Wo! lord; for Y spak a word, seith the Lord.
Tu mourras en paix; et comme on a brûlé des parfums pour tes pères, les anciens rois qui t’ont précédé, ainsi on en brûlera pour toi, et l’on te pleurera, en disant: Hélas, seigneur! Car j’ai prononcé cette parole, dit l’Éternel.
6 And Jeremye, the profete, spak to Sedechie, kyng of Juda, alle these wordis in Jerusalem.
Jérémie, le prophète, dit toutes ces paroles à Sédécias, roi de Juda, à Jérusalem.
7 And the oost of the kyng of Babiloyne fauyt ayens Jerusalem, and ayens alle the citees of Juda, that weren left; ayens Lachis, and ayens Azecha; for whi these strong citees weren left of the citees of Juda.
Et l’armée du roi de Babylone combattait contre Jérusalem et contre toutes les autres villes de Juda, contre Lakis et Azéka, car c’étaient des villes fortes qui restaient parmi les villes de Juda.
8 The word that was maad of the Lord to Jeremye, aftir that kyng Sedechie smoot boond of pees with al the puple in Jerusalem,
La parole fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l’Éternel, après que le roi Sédécias eut fait un pacte avec tout le peuple de Jérusalem, pour publier la liberté,
9 and prechide, that ech man schulde delyuere his seruaunt, and ech man his handmaide, an Ebreu man and an Ebru womman fre, and that thei schulden not be lordis of hem, that is, in a Jew, and her brothir.
afin que chacun renvoyât libres son esclave et sa servante, l’Hébreu et la femme de l’Hébreu, et que personne ne tînt plus dans la servitude le Juif, son frère.
10 Therfor alle the princes and al the puple herden, whiche maden couenaunt, that thei schulden delyuere ech man his seruaunt, and ech man his handmaide fre, and schulde no more be lordis of hem; therfor thei herden, and delyueriden;
Tous les chefs et tout le peuple, qui étaient entrés dans le pacte, s’engagèrent à renvoyer libres chacun son esclave et sa servante, afin de ne plus les tenir dans la servitude; ils obéirent, et les renvoyèrent.
11 and thei weren turned aftirward, and drowen ayen her seruauntis, and handmaidis, whiche thei hadden left fre, and thei maden suget in to seruauntis, and in to seruauntessis.
Mais ensuite ils changèrent d’avis; ils reprirent les esclaves et les servantes qu’ils avaient affranchis, et les forcèrent à redevenir esclaves et servantes.
12 And the word of the Lord was maad of the Lord to Jeremye, and seide,
Alors la parole de l’Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l’Éternel, en ces mots:
13 The Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, Y smoot a boond of pees with youre fadris, in the dai in which Y ledde hem out of the lond of Egipt, out of the hous of seruage; and Y seide, Whanne seuene yeeris ben fillid,
Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël: J’ai fait une alliance avec vos pères, le jour où je les ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de servitude; et je leur ai dit:
14 ech man delyuere his brother, an Ebreu man, which is seeld to hym, and he schal serue thee sixe yeer, and thou schalt delyuere hym fro thee; and youre fadris herden not me, nether bowiden her eere.
Au bout de sept ans, chacun de vous renverra libre son frère hébreu qui se vend à lui; il te servira six années, puis tu le renverras libre de chez toi. Mais vos pères ne m’ont point écouté, ils n’ont point prêté l’oreille.
15 And ye ben conuertid to dai, and ye diden that, that is riytful bifore myn iyen, that ye precheden ech man fredom to his frend, and ye maden couenaunt in my siyt, in the hous wherynne my name is clepid to help on that fredom.
Vous, vous aviez fait aujourd’hui un retour sur vous-mêmes, vous aviez fait ce qui est droit à mes yeux, en publiant la liberté chacun pour son prochain, vous aviez fait un pacte devant moi, dans la maison sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué.
16 And ye turneden ayen, and defouliden my name, and ye brouyten ayen ech man his seruaunt, and ech man his handmaide, whiche ye delyueriden, that thei schulden be fre, and of her owne power; and ye maden hem suget, that thei be seruauntis and haundmaidis to you.
Mais vous êtes revenus en arrière, et vous avez profané mon nom; vous avez repris chacun les esclaves et les servantes que vous aviez affranchis, rendus à eux-mêmes, et vous les avez forcés à redevenir vos esclaves et vos servantes.
17 Therfor the Lord seith thes thingis, Ye herden not me, that ye prechiden fredom, ech man to his brothir, and ech man to his freend; lo! Y preeche to you fredom, seith the Lord, and to swerd, and to hungur, and to pestilence, and Y schal yyue you in to stiryng to alle rewmes of erthe.
C’est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Éternel: Vous ne m’avez point obéi, en publiant la liberté chacun pour son frère, chacun pour son prochain. Voici, je publie contre vous, dit l’Éternel, la liberté de l’épée, de la peste et de la famine, et je vous rendrai un objet d’effroi pour tous les royaumes de la terre.
18 And Y schal yyue the men, that breken my boond of pees, and kepten not the wordis of boond of pees, to whiche thei assentiden in my siyt, and kepten not the calf, which thei kittiden in to twei partis; and the princes of Juda,
Je livrerai les hommes qui ont violé mon alliance, qui n’ont pas observé les conditions du pacte qu’ils avaient fait devant moi, en coupant un veau en deux et en passant entre ses morceaux;
19 and the princes of Jerusalem, and the onest seruauntis, and preestis yeden bytwixe the partyngis therof, and al the puple of the lond, that yeden bitwixe the departyngis of the calf;
je livrerai les chefs de Juda et les chefs de Jérusalem, les eunuques, les sacrificateurs, et tout le peuple du pays, qui ont passé entre les morceaux du veau;
20 and Y schal yyue hem in to the hond of her enemyes, and in to the hond of hem that seken her lijf; and the deed careyn of hem schal be in to mete to the volatilis of the eir, and to the beestis of erthe.
je les livrerai entre les mains de leurs ennemis, entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et leurs cadavres serviront de pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre.
21 And Y schal yyue Sedechie, the kyng of Juda, and hise princes, in to the hond of her enemyes, and in to the hond of hem that seken her lijf, and in to the hond of the oostis of the kyng of Babiloyne, that yeden awei fro you.
Je livrerai Sédécias, roi de Juda, et ses chefs, entre les mains de leurs ennemis, entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, entre les mains de l’armée du roi de Babylone, qui s’est éloignée de vous.
22 Lo! Y comaunde, seith the Lord, and Y schal brynge hem ayen in to this citee, and thei schulen fiyte ayens it, and schulen take it, and schulen brenne it with fier; and Y schal yyue the citees of Juda in to wildirnesse, for ther is no dwellere.
Voici, je donnerai mes ordres, dit l’Éternel, et je les ramènerai contre cette ville; ils l’attaqueront, ils la prendront, et la brûleront par le feu. Et je ferai des villes de Juda un désert sans habitants.
