Isaiah 58
1 Crye thou, ceesse thou not; as a trumpe enhaunse thi vois, and schewe thou to my puple her grete trespassis, and to the hous of Jacob her synnes.
Crie à plein gosier, ne te ménage point! Comme le cor fais retentir ta voix! Et expose à mon peuple son iniquité, à la maison de Jacob ses péchés.
2 For thei seken me fro dai in to dai, and thei wolen knowe my weies; as a folk, that hath do riytfulnesse, and that hath not forsake the doom of her God; thei preien me domes of riytfulnesse, and wolen neiy to God.
Jour par jour ils s’adressent à moi et manifestent le désir de connaître mes voies; à la façon d’un peuple pratiquant la justice, qui n’aurait jamais trahi la loi de son Dieu, ils me demandent des règles de justice, ils sollicitent la présence de Dieu.
3 Whi fastiden we, and thou biheldist not; we mekiden oure soulis, and thou knewist not? Lo! youre wille is foundun in the dai of youre fastyng, and ye axen alle youre dettouris.
"Pourquoi jeûnons-nous, sans que tu t’en aperçoives? Mortifions-nous notre personne, sans que tu le remarques?" C’Est qu’au jour de votre jeûne, vous poursuivez vos intérêts et tyrannisez vos débiteurs.
4 Lo! ye fasten to chidyngis and stryuyngis, and smyten with the fist wickidli. Nyl ye fast, as `til to this dai, that youre cry be herd an hiy.
Oui, vous jeûnez pour fomenter querelles et dissensions, pour frapper d’un poing brutal; vous ne jeûnez point à l’heure présente pour que votre voix soit entendue là-haut.
5 Whether sich is the fastyng which Y chees, a man to turmente his soule bi dai? whether to bynde his heed as a sercle, and to make redi a sak and aische? Whethir thou schalt clepe this a fastyng, and a dai acceptable to the Lord?
Est-ce là un jeûne qui peut m’être agréable, un jour où l’homme se mortifie lui-même? Courber la tête comme un roseau, se coucher sur le cilice et la cendre, est-ce là ce que tu appelles un jeûne, un jour bienvenu de l’Eternel?
6 Whether not this is more the fastyng, which Y chees? Vnbynde thou the byndingis togidere of vnpitee, releesse thou birthuns pressynge doun; delyuere thou hem free, that ben brokun, and breke thou ech birthun.
Mais voici le jeûne que j’aime: c’est de rompre les chaînes de l’injustice, de dénouer les liens de tous les jougs, de renvoyer libres ceux qu’on opprime, de briser enfin toute servitude;
7 Breke thi breed to an hungri man, and brynge in to thin hous nedi men and herborles; whanne thou seest a nakid man, hile thou hym, and dispise not thi fleisch.
puis encore, de partager ton pain avec l’affamé, de recueillir dans ta maison les malheureux sans asile; quand tu vois un homme nu, de le couvrir, de ne jamais te dérober à ceux qui sont comme ta propre chair!
8 Thanne thi liyt schal breke out as the morewtid, and thin helthe schal rise ful soone; and thi riytfulnesse schal go bifore thi face, and the glorie of the Lord schal gadere thee.
C’Est alors que ta lumière poindra comme l’aube, que ta guérison sera prompte à éclore; ta vertu marchera devant toi, et derrière toi la majesté de l’Eternel fermera la marche.
9 Thanne thou schalt clepe to help, and the Lord schal here; thou schalt crie, and he schal seie, Lo! Y am present, for Y am merciful, thi Lord God. If thou takist awei a chayne fro the myddis of thee, and ceessist to holde forth the fyngur, and to speke that profitith not;
Alors tu appelleras et le Seigneur répondra, tu supplieras et il dira: "Me voici!" Oui, si tu bannis de ton sein toute oppression, le geste violent et la parole malfaisante,
10 whanne thou schedist out thi soule to an hungri man, and fillist a soule, `that is turmentid, thi liyt schal rise in derknessis, and thi derknessis schulen be as myddai.
si tu témoignes ta bienveillance à l’affamé et rassasies celui qui est torturé par le besoin, ta lumière brillera au milieu des ténèbres, et ta nuit sera comme le plein midi.
11 And the Lord thi God schal yyue euere reste to thee, and schal fille thi soule with schynyngis, and schal delyuere thi boonys; and thou schalt be as a watri gardyn, and as a welle of watris, whose waters schulen not faile.
Et constamment l’Eternel te guidera, il prodiguera à ton âme des jouissances pures, et fortifiera tes membres; et tu seras comme un jardin bien arrosé, comme une source jaillissante, dont les eaux ne causent aucune déception.
12 And the forsakun thingis of worldis schulen be bildid in thee, and thou schalt reise the foundementis of generacioun and generacioun; and thou schalt be clepid a bildere of heggis, turnynge awei the pathis of wickidnessis.
On restaurera, grâce à toi, les ruines antiques, tu relèveras des fondations qui datent des siècles passés, et tu seras proclamé le réparateur des brèches, le restaurateur des routes désormais populeuses.
13 If thou turnest awei thi foot fro the sabat, to do thi wille in myn hooli dai, and clepist the sabat delicat, and hooli, the gloriouse of the Lord, and glorifiest him, while thou doist not thi weies, and thi wille is not foundun, that thou speke a word;
Si tu cesses de fouler aux pieds le sabbat, de vaquer à tes affaires en ce jour qui m’est consacré, si tu considères le sabbat comme un délice, la sainte journée de l’Eternel comme digne de respect, si tu le tiens en honneur en t’abstenant de suivre tes voies ordinaires, de t’occuper de tes intérêts et d’en faire le sujet de tes entretiens,
14 thanne thou schalt delite on the Lord, and Y schal reise thee on the hiynesse of erthe, and Y schal fede thee with the eritage of Jacob, thi fadir; for whi the mouth of the Lord spak.
alors tu te délecteras dans le Seigneur et je te ferai dominer sur les hauteurs de la terre et jouir—de l’héritage de ton aïeul Jacob… C’Est la bouche de l’Eternel qui l’a dit.
