Genesis 41
1 Aftir twei yeer Farao seiy a dreem; he gesside that he stood on a flood,
Après deux ans, Pharaon vit un songe. Il croyait qu’il était debout sur le bord du fleuve,
2 fro which seuene faire kiyn and ful fatte stieden, and weren fed in the places of mareis;
Duquel montaient sept vaches extrêmement belles et grasses; et elles paissaient dans les marécages.
3 and othere seuene, foule and leene, camen out of the flood, and weren fed in thilk brenke of the watir, in grene places;
Sept autres vaches aussi sortaient du fleuve, hideuses et consumées de maigreur; et elles paissaient sur la rive même du fleuve, dans des lieux verdoyants;
4 and tho deuoureden thilke kien of whiche the fairnesse and comelynesse of bodies was wondurful.
Et elles dévorèrent celles dont la beauté et l’embonpoint étaient merveilleux. Pharaon s’étant réveillé,
5 Farao wakide, and slepte eft, and seiy another dreem; seuen eeris of corn ful and faire camen forth in o stalke,
S’endormit de nouveau et vit un autre songe: Sept épis poussaient sur une seule tige, pleins et beaux.
6 and othere as many eeris of corn, thinne and smytun with corrupcioun of brennynge wynd,
Et autant d’autres épis grêles et frappés par un vent brûlant se levaient aussi,
7 camen forth, deuourynge al the fairenesse of the firste. Farao wakide aftir reste,
Dévorant toute la beauté des premiers. Pharaon s’éveillant après son sommeil,
8 and whanne morewtid was maad, he was aferd bi inward drede, and he sente to alle the expowneris of Egipt, and to alle wise men; and whanne thei weren clepid, he telde the dreem, and noon was that expownede.
Et, le matin venu, frappé d’épouvante, il envoya vers tous les devins de l’Égypte et tous les sages; et les ayant mandés, il leur raconta le songe, et il n’y en avait aucun qui put l’interpréter.
9 Thanne at the laste the maistir `of boteleris bithouyte, and seide, Y knowleche my synne;
Alors enfin le grand échanson, se souvenant, dit: Je confesse ma faute.
10 the kyng was wrooth to hise seruauntis, and comaundide me and the maister `of bakeris to be cast doun in to the prisoun of the prince of knyytis,
Le roi irrité contre ses serviteurs ordonna que moi et le grand panetier fussions ramenés dans la prison du chef des soldats,
11 where we bothe saien a dreem in o nyyt, biforeschewynge of thingis to comynge.
Où dans une seule nuit nous vîmes chacun un songe, présage des choses futures.
12 An Ebrew child, seruaunt of the same duk of knyytis was there, to whom we telden the dremes,
Il y avait là un jeune Hébreu, serviteur du même chef des soldats, et auquel ayant raconté nos songes,
13 and herden what euer thing the bifallyng of thing preuede afterward; for Y am restorid to myn office, and he was hangid in a cros.
Nous entendîmes tout ce que dans la suite l’événement confirma; car moi je fus rendu à ma charge, et lui fut suspendu à une croix.
14 Anoon at the comaundement of the kyng thei polliden Joseph led out of prisoun, and whanne `the clooth was chaungid, thei brouyten Joseph to the kyng.
Aussitôt par l’ordre du roi, on tondit Joseph qu’on avait tiré de la prison, et, ses vêtements changés, on le lui présenta.
15 To whom the kyng seide, Y seiye dremes, and noon is that expowneth tho thingis that Y seiy, I haue herd that thou expownest moost prudentli.
Le roi lui dit: J’ai vu des songes, et il n’y a personne qui puisse les expliquer: j’ai appris que tu les interprètes très sagement.
16 Joseph answerde, With out me, God schal answere prosperitees to Farao.
Joseph répondit: Sans moi, Dieu répondra des choses favorables à Pharaon.
17 Therfor Farao telde that that he seiy; Y gesside that Y stood on the brenke of the flood,
Pharaon raconta donc ce qu’il avait vu: Je croyais que j’étais debout sur la rive du fleuve,
18 and seuene kiyn, ful faire and with fleischis able to etyng, stieden fro the watir, whiche kiyn gaderiden grene seggis in the pasture of the marreis;
Et que sept vaches sortaient du fleuve, extrêmement belles et aux chairs grasses; elles paissaient l’herbe verte dans les marécages.
19 and lo! seuene othere kiyn, so foule and leene, sueden these, that Y seiy neuere siche in the lond of Egipt;
Et voilà que sept autres vaches les suivaient, si difformes et si maigres, que jamais je n’en vis de telles dan s la terre d’Égypte.
20 and whanne the formere kien weren deuourid and wastid, tho secounde yauen no steppe of fulnesse,
Or celles-ci ayant dévoré et consumé les premières,
21 but weren slowe bi lijk leenesse and palenesse. I wakide, and eft Y was oppressid bi sleep, and Y seiy a dreem;
Ne donnèrent aucun signe de satiété; mais elles demeuraient engourdies dans la même maigreur et la même laideur. M’étant éveillé et de nouveau assoupi,
22 seuene eeris of corn, ful and faireste, camen forth in o stalke,
Je vis un songe: sept épis poussaient sur une seule tige, pleins et très beaux.
23 and othere seuene, thinne and smytun with `corrupcioun of brennynge wynd, camen forth of the stobil,
Sept autres aussi, grêles et frappés par un vent brûlant s’élevaient d’un chaume;
24 whiche deuouriden the fairenesse of the formere;
Ils dévorèrent la beauté des premiers. J’ai raconté le songe aux devins, et il n’y a personne qui puisse l’expliquer.
25 Y telde the dreem to expowneris, and no man is that expowneth. Joseph answerde, The dreem of the king is oon; God schewide to Farao what thingis he schal do.
Joseph répondit: Le songe du roi est un: ce que Dieu doit faire, il l’a montré à Pharaon.
26 Seuene faire kiyn, and seuene ful eeris of corn, ben seuene yeeris of plentee, and tho comprehenden the same strengthe of dreem;
Les sept vaches belles et les sept épis pleins sont sept années d’abondance, et ont dans le songe la même signification.
27 and seuene kiyn thinne and leene, that stieden aftir tho, and seuene thinne eeris of corn and smytun with brennynge wynd, ben seuene yeer of hungur to comynge,
Pareillement, les sept vaches maigres et décharnées qui sont montées après les premières, et les sept épis grêles et frappés d’un vent brûlant, sont sept années d’une famine qui doit venir.
28 whiche schulen be fillid bi this ordre.
Ces années s’accompliront dans cet ordre:
29 Lo! seuene yeer of greet plentee in al the lond of Egipt schulen come,
Voilà que viendront dans toute la terre d’Égypte sept années d’une grande fertilité,
30 and seuene othre yeer of so greet bareynesse schulen sue tho, that al the abundaunce bifore be youun to foryetyng; for the hungur schal waste al the lond,
Que suivront sept autres années d’une si grande stérilité, que toute l’abondance précédente sera livrée à l’oubli; car la famine doit consumer toute la terre.
31 and the greetnesse of pouert schal leese the greetnesse of plentee.
Et la grandeur de la disette doit détruire la grandeur de l’abondance.
32 Forsothe this that thou siyest the secunde tyme a dreem, perteynynge to the same thing, is a `schewyng of sadnesse, for the word of God schal be doon, and schal be fillid ful swiftli.
Mais le songe que vous avez vu en second lieu, et qui se rapporte à la même chose, c’est un signe certain que la parole de Dieu aura son effet et qu’elle s’accomplira promptement.
33 Now therfor puruey the kyng a wijs man and a redi, and make the kyng hym souereyn to the lond of Egipt,
Maintenant donc, que le roi choisisse un homme sage et habile, et qu’il le prépose sur la terre d’Égypte;
34 which man ordeyne gouernouris bi alle cuntreis, and gadere he in to bernys the fyuethe part of fruytis bi seuene yeer of plentee,
Afin qu’il établisse des intendants dans toutes les provinces; et que la cinquième partie des fruits des sept années d’abondance,
35 that schulen come now; and al the wheete be kept vndur the power of Farao, and be it kept in citees,
Qui déjà maintenant vont venir, il l’amasse dans les greniers: et que tout le blé soit mis sous la puissance de Pharaon, et gardé dans les villes;
36 and be it maad redi to the hungur to comynge of seuene yeer that schal oppresse Egipt, and the lond be not wastid bi pouert.
Et qu’il soit tenu prêt pour la famine des sept ans qui pèsera sur l’Égypte, et que le pays ne soit pas consumé par la disette.
37 The counsel pleside Farao,
Ce conseil plut à Pharaon et à tous ses ministres;
38 and alle his mynystris, and he spak to hem, Wher we moun fynde sich a man which is ful of Goddis spirit?
Et il leur demanda: Pourons-nous trouver un tel homme qui soit plein de l’esprit de Dieu?
39 Therfor Farao seide to Joseph, For God hath schewid to thee alle thingis whiche thou hast spoke, wher Y mai fynde a wisere man and lijk thee?
Il dit donc à Joseph: Puisque Dieu t’a montré tout ce que tu as dit, pourrai-je trouver quelqu’un plus sage que toi, et même semblable à toi?
40 Therfor thou schalt be ouer myn hous, and al the puple schal obeie to the comaundement of thi mouth; Y schal passe thee onely by o trone of the rewme.
C’est toi qui seras préposé sur ma maison, et au commandement de ta bouche, tout le peuple obéira; et c’est par le trône royal seulement que j’aurai sur toi la préséance.
41 And eft Farao seide to Joseph, Lo! Y haue ordeyned thee on al the lond of Egipt.
Pharaon dit encore à Joseph: Voici que je t’établis sur toute la terre d’Égypte.
42 And Farao took the ryng fro his hond, and yaf it in the hond of Joseph, and he clothide Joseph with a stoole of bijs, and puttide a goldun wrethe aboute the necke;
Et il ôta l’anneau de sa main, et le mit à la main de Joseph: il le revêtit aussi d’une robe de fin lin, et lui mit autour du cou un collier d’or.
43 and Farao made Joseph to `stie on his secounde chare, while a bidele criede, that alle men schulden knele bifore hym, and schulden knowe that he was souereyn of al the lond of Egipt.
Il le fit monter sur son second char, un héraut criant que tous devant lui fléchissent le genou, et sussent qu’il était préposé sur toute la terre d’Égypte.
44 And the kyng seide to Joseph, Y am Farao, without thi comaundement no man shal stire hond ether foot in al the lond of Egipt.
Le roi dit aussi à Joseph: Moi je suis Pharaon, mais sans ton commandement nul ne remuera la main ou le pied dans toute la terre d’Égypte.
45 And he turnede the name of Joseph, and clepide him bi Egipcian langage, the sauyour of the world; and he yaf to Joseph a wijf, Asenech, the douyter of Potifar, preest of Heliopoleos. And so Joseph yede out to the lond of Egipt.
Et il changea son nom, et il l’appela en langue égyptienne Sauveur du monde. Il lui donna pour femme Aseneth, fille de Putiphar, prêtre d’Héliopolis. Joseph sortit donc pour visiter la terre d’Égypte.
46 Forsothe Joseph was of thretti yeer, whanne he stood in the siyt of kyng Farao, and cumpasside alle the cuntreis of Egipt.
(Or il avait trente ans, quand il fut présenté au roi Pharaon), et il fit le tour de toutes les provinces de l’Égypte.
47 And the plente of seuene yeer cam, and ripe corn weren bounden into handfuls, and weren gaderid into the bernys of Egipt,
Cependant arriva la fertilité des sept années, et les blés, mis en gerbes, furent recueillis dans les greniers de l’Égypte.
48 also al the aboundaunce of cornes weren kept in alle citeis,
Toute l’abondance des grains fut mise aussi en réserve dans chacune des villes.
49 and so greet aboundaunce was of wheete, that it was maad euene to the grauel of the see, and the plente passide mesure.
Et si grande fut l’abondance du froment, qu’il égalait le sable de la mer, et que la quantité surpassait toute mesure.
50 Sotheli twei sones were born to Joseph bifor that the hungur came, whiche Asenech, douytir of Putifar, preest of Heliopoleos, childide to hym.
Or il naquit à Joseph, avant que la famine vînt, deux fils que lui enfanta Aseneth, fille de Putiphar, prêtre d’Héliopolis.
51 And he clepide the name of the firste gendrid sone, Manasses, and seide, God hath maad me to foryete alle my traueilis, and the hous of my fadir;
Il appela le premier-né du nom de Manassé, disant: Dieu m’a fait oublier toutes mes peines, et la maison de mon père.
52 and he clepide the name of the secunde sone Effraym, and seide, God hath maad me to encreesse in the lond of my pouert.
Et il appela le second du nom d’Ephraïm, disant: Dieu m’a fait croître dans la terre de ma pauvreté.
53 Therfor whanne seuene yeer of plentee that weren in Egipt weren passid,
Ainsi, les sept années de la fertilité de l’Égypte étant passées,
54 seuene yeer of pouert bigunnen to come, whiche Joseph bifore seide, and hungur hadde the maistri in al the world; also hungur was in al the lond of Egipt;
Commencèrent à venir les sept années de disette que Joseph avait prédites; et dans tout l’univers la famine prévalut; mais dans toute la terre d’Égypte il y avait du pain.
55 and whanne that lond hungride, the puple criede to Farao, and axide metis; to whiche he answeride, Go ye to Joseph, and do ye what euer thing he seith to you.
Or, l’Égypte affamée, le peuple cria à Pharaon, demandant des vivres. Pharaon leur répondit: Allez à Joseph, et tout ce qu’il vous dira, faites-le.
56 Forsothe hungur encreesside ech dai in al the lond, and Joseph openyde alle the bernys, and seelde to Egipcians, for also hungur oppresside hem;
Cependant la famine augmentait chaque jour sur toute la terre; et Joseph ouvrit tous les greniers; et il vendait du blé aux Égyptiens, car la famine pesait aussi sur eux.
57 and alle prouynces camen in to Egipt to bie metis, and to abate the yuel of nedynesse.
Et toutes les provinces venaient en Égypte pour acheter des vivres, et tempérer le mal de la disette.
