Genesis 4
1 Forsothe Adam knewe Eue his wijf, which conseyuede, and childide Cayn, and seide, Y haue gete a man bi God.
Or Adam connut sa femme Ève, qui conçut et enfanta Caïn, disant: J’ai acquis un homme par la grâce de Dieu.
2 And efte sche childide his brother Abel. Forsothe Abel was a kepere of scheep, and Cayn was an erthe tilyere.
Et de nouveau elle enfanta son frère Abel. Or Abel fut pasteur de brebis, et Caïn laboureur.
3 Sotheli it was don after many daies, that Cayn offride yiftis to the Lord of the fruytis of erthe;
Et il arriva après bien des jours que Caïn offrait des fruits de la terre en présent au Seigneur.
4 and Abel offride of the first gendrid of his floc, and of the fatnesse of tho. And the Lord bihelde to Abel and to the yiftis of hym;
Abel aussi offrit des premiers-nés de son troupeau, et des plus gras: et le Seigneur regarda Abel et ses dons.
5 sotheli he bihelde not to Cayn and to hise yiftis. And Cayn was wrooth greetli, and his cheer felde doun.
Mais Caïn et ses dons, il ne les regarda pas: aussi Caïn fut violemment irrité, et son visage fut abattu.
6 And the Lord seide to hym, Whi art thou wrooth, and whi felde doun thi face?
Et le Seigneur lui dit: Pourquoi es-tu irrité, et pourquoi ton visage est-il abattu?
7 Whether not if thou schalt do wel, thou schalt resseyue; but if thou doist yuele, thi synne schal be present anoon in the yatis? but the desir therof schal be vndur thee, and thou schalt be lord therof.
Si tu fais bien, n’en recevras-tu pas la récompense? et si tu fais mal, le péché ne sera-t-il pas soudain à ta porte? Mais la concupiscence qui t’entraîne vers lui sera sous toi, et tu la domineras.
8 And Cayn seide to Abel his brother, Go we out. And whanne thei weren in the feeld, Cayn roos ayens his brother Abel, and killide him.
Or Caïn dit à Abel son frère: Sortons dehors. Et lorsqu’ils étaient dans la campagne, Caïn se leva contre son frère Abel et le tua.
9 And the Lord seide to Cayn, Where is Abel thi brother? Which answerde, Y woot not; whether Y am the kepere of my brothir?
Le Seigneur dit alors à Caïn: Où est Abel ton frère? Il répondit: Je ne sais; suis-je le gardien de mon frère, moi?
10 And God seide to Cayn, What hast thou do? the vois of the blood of thi brother crieth to me fro erthe.
Mais le Seigneur lui repartit: Qu’as-tu fait? la voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre jusqu’à moi.
11 Now therfor thou schalt be cursid on erthe, that openyde his mouth, and resseyuede of thin hond the blood of thi brothir.
Maintenant donc, maudit tu seras sur la terre qui a ouvert sa bouche et qui a reçu de ta main le sang de ton frère.
12 Whanne thou schalt worche the erthe, it schal not yyue his fruytis to thee; thou schalt be vnstable of dwellyng and fleynge aboute on erthe in alle the daies of thi lijf.
Lors même que tu l’auras cultivée, elle ne te donnera pas ses fruits: tu seras errant et fugitif sur la terre.
13 And Cayn seide to the Lord, My wickidnesse is more than that Y disserue foryyuenesse; lo!
Mais Caïn dit au Seigneur: Elle est trop grande, mon iniquité, pour que je mérite le pardon.
14 to dai thou castist me out fro the face of the erthe; and Y schal be hid fro thi face, and Y schal be vnstable of dwellyng and fleynge aboute in erthe; therfore ech man that schal fynde me schal slee me.
Voilà que vous me rejetez aujourd’hui de la face de la terre, je me cacherai de votre face, et je serai errant et fugitif sur la terre: quiconque donc me trouvera, me tuera.
15 And the Lord seide to hym, It schal not be don so, but ech man that schal slee Cayn shal be punyschid seuenfold. And the Lord settide a signe in Cayn, that ech man that schulde fynde hym schulde not slee hym.
Mais le Seigneur lui répondit: Non, il n’en sera pas ainsi; car quiconque tuera Caïn, sera puni sept fois. Et le Seigneur mit un signe sur Caïn, afin que quiconque le trouverait, ne le tuât pas.
16 And Cayn yede out fro the face of the Lord, and dwellide fleynge aboute in erthe, at the eest coost of Eden.
Étant donc sorti de la présence du Seigneur, Caïn fugitif habita dans le pays qui est au côté oriental d’Eden.
17 Forsothe Cayn knewe his wiif, which conseyuede, and childide Enoth; and Cayn bildide a citee, and clepide the name therof of the name of hise sone Enoth.
Cependant Caïn connut sa femme, laquelle conçut et enfanta Hénoch, et il bâtit une ville, et il lui donna le nom d’Hénoch, tiré du nom de son fils.
18 Forsothe Enoth gendride Irad, and Irad gendride Manyael, and Manyael gendride Matusael, and Matusael gendride Lameth;
Or Hénoch engendra Irad, Irad engendra Maviaël, Maviaël engendra Mathusaël, et Mathusaël engendra Lamech,
19 that took twei wyues, the name to o wijf was Ada, and the name to the tother was Sella.
Lequel prit deux femmes: le nom de l’une était Ada, et le nom de l’autre. Sella.
20 And Ada gendride Jabel, that was the fadir of dwellers in tentis and of shepherdis;
Et Ada enfanta Jabel, qui fut le père de ceux qui habitent sous les tentes, et des pasteurs.
21 and the name of his brother was Tubal, he was the fadir of syngeris in harpe and orgun.
Et le nom de son frère était Jubal; c’est le père de ceux qui jouent de la harpe et de l’orgue.
22 And Sella gendride Tubalcayn, that was an hamerbetere, and smyyt on alle werkis of bras and of yrun; forsothe the sistir of Tubalcayn was Neoma.
Sella aussi engendra Tubalcaïn, qui sut travailler avec le marteau, et faire toutes sortes d’ouvrages d’airain et de fer. La sœur de Tubalcaïn fut Noëma.
23 And Lameth seide to his wyues Ada and Sella, Ye wyues of Lameth, here my vois, and herkne my word; for Y haue slayn a man bi my wounde, and a yong wexynge man bi my `violent betyng;
Or Lamech dit à ses femmes Ada et Sella: Entendez ma voix, femmes de Lamech, prêtez l’oreille à mes paroles: j’ai tué un homme à cause de ma blessure, et un jeune homme à cause de ma meurtrissure.
24 veniaunce schal be youun seuenfold of Cayn, forsothe of Lameth seuentisithis seuensithis.
Caïn sera vengé sept fois, mais Lamech septante fois sept fois.
25 Also yit Adam knewe his wijf, and sche childide a sone, and clepide his name Seth, and seide, God hath put to me another seed for Abel, whom Cayn killide.
Adam connut encore sa femme, et elle enfanta un fils, et elle l’appela du nom de Seth, disant: Dieu m’a donné un autre fils à la place d’Abel qu’a tué Caïn.
26 But also a sone was borun to Seth, which sone he clepide Enos; this Enos bigan to clepe inwardli the name of the Lord.
Et à Seth aussi naquit un fils qu’il appela Enos; celui-ci commença à invoquer le nom du Seigneur.
