Genesis 4
1 Forsothe Adam knewe Eue his wijf, which conseyuede, and childide Cayn, and seide, Y haue gete a man bi God.
Or, Adam connut Éve sa femme, qui, ayant conçu, enfanta Caïn; et elle dit: J'ai obtenu un homme grâce à Dieu.
2 And efte sche childide his brother Abel. Forsothe Abel was a kepere of scheep, and Cayn was an erthe tilyere.
Ensuite elle enfanta son frère Abel, qui fut pasteur des brebis; de son côté Caïn s'adonna au labourage de la terre.
3 Sotheli it was don after many daies, that Cayn offride yiftis to the Lord of the fruytis of erthe;
Après bien des jours, il arriva que Caïn apporta des fruits de la terre en offrande au Seigneur.
4 and Abel offride of the first gendrid of his floc, and of the fatnesse of tho. And the Lord bihelde to Abel and to the yiftis of hym;
Or, Abel apporta des premiers-nés de son troupeaux et de leur graisse. Et Dieu regarda Abel et ses présents.
5 sotheli he bihelde not to Cayn and to hise yiftis. And Cayn was wrooth greetli, and his cheer felde doun.
Mais il ne fit attention ni à Caïn, ni à son offrande; Caïn en fut très affligé, et eut le visage tout abattu.
6 And the Lord seide to hym, Whi art thou wrooth, and whi felde doun thi face?
Le Seigneur dit à Caïn: D'où vient que tu es si fort affligé et que ton visage est tout abattu?
7 Whether not if thou schalt do wel, thou schalt resseyue; but if thou doist yuele, thi synne schal be present anoon in the yatis? but the desir therof schal be vndur thee, and thou schalt be lord therof.
Si tu as bien fait de m'apporter des offrandes, en les choisissant mal n'as-tu pas péché? Calme-toi, le péché est sous ta puissance, et c'est à toi de le dominer.
8 And Cayn seide to Abel his brother, Go we out. And whanne thei weren in the feeld, Cayn roos ayens his brother Abel, and killide him.
Et Caïn dit à Abel son frère: Allons aux champs. Et voilà que comme ils étaient aux champs, Caïn se leva contre son frère Abel et le tua.
9 And the Lord seide to Cayn, Where is Abel thi brother? Which answerde, Y woot not; whether Y am the kepere of my brothir?
Et le Seigneur dit à Caïn: Où est Abel ton frère? Il répondit: Je ne sais: suis-je le gardien de mon frère?
10 And God seide to Cayn, What hast thou do? the vois of the blood of thi brother crieth to me fro erthe.
Le Seigneur Dieu dit: Qu'as-tu fait? Le cri du sang de ton frère a retenti de la terre jusqu'à moi.
11 Now therfor thou schalt be cursid on erthe, that openyde his mouth, and resseyuede of thin hond the blood of thi brothir.
Maintenant donc, maudit sois-tu sur la terre qui a ouvert la bouche pour recueillir de ta main le sang de ton frère.
12 Whanne thou schalt worche the erthe, it schal not yyue his fruytis to thee; thou schalt be vnstable of dwellyng and fleynge aboute on erthe in alle the daies of thi lijf.
Lorsque tu travailleras à la terre, elle n'emploiera pas sa force pour te faire ses dons; tu seras gémissant et tremblant sur la terre.
13 And Cayn seide to the Lord, My wickidnesse is more than that Y disserue foryyuenesse; lo!
Caïn dit au Seigneur: Mon crime est trop grand pour m'être pardonné.
14 to dai thou castist me out fro the face of the erthe; and Y schal be hid fro thi face, and Y schal be vnstable of dwellyng and fleynge aboute in erthe; therfore ech man that schal fynde me schal slee me.
Si vous me bannissez aujourd'hui de la face de cette terre, je serai caché loin de vos yeux; je serai gémissant et tremblant sur la terre, et le premier qui me rencontrera me tuera.
15 And the Lord seide to hym, It schal not be don so, but ech man that schal slee Cayn shal be punyschid seuenfold. And the Lord settide a signe in Cayn, that ech man that schulde fynde hym schulde not slee hym.
Le Seigneur lui dit: Il n'en sera point ainsi; tout être qui tuerait Caïn encourrait sept châtiments. Et le Seigneur Dieu mit un signe à Caïn, pour que tout être qui le rencontrerait ne le tuât point.
16 And Cayn yede out fro the face of the Lord, and dwellide fleynge aboute in erthe, at the eest coost of Eden.
Or, Caïn s'éloigna de la face de Dieu, et il habita la terre de Nod vis-à- vis Éden.
17 Forsothe Cayn knewe his wiif, which conseyuede, and childide Enoth; and Cayn bildide a citee, and clepide the name therof of the name of hise sone Enoth.
Après cela Caïn connut sa femme, qui, ayant conçu, enfanta Enoch; ensuite Caïn bâtit une ville, et du nom de son fils, il la nomma Enoch.
18 Forsothe Enoth gendride Irad, and Irad gendride Manyael, and Manyael gendride Matusael, and Matusael gendride Lameth;
Or, d'Enoch fut engendré Gaïdad, Gaïdad engendra Malalehël, Malalehël engendra Mathusala, et Mathusala engendra Lamech.
19 that took twei wyues, the name to o wijf was Ada, and the name to the tother was Sella.
Et Lamech épousa deux femmes: la première nommée Ada, la seconde nommée Sella.
20 And Ada gendride Jabel, that was the fadir of dwellers in tentis and of shepherdis;
Ada enfanta Jabel; celui-ci fut le père de ceux qui demeurèrent sous des tentes, des nourrisseurs de bestiaux.
21 and the name of his brother was Tubal, he was the fadir of syngeris in harpe and orgun.
Et son frère eut le nom Jubal; celui-ci inventa le psaltérion et la cithare.
22 And Sella gendride Tubalcayn, that was an hamerbetere, and smyyt on alle werkis of bras and of yrun; forsothe the sistir of Tubalcayn was Neoma.
Or Sella de son côté enfanta Thobel ou Tubalcaïn, et il fut ouvrier au marteau, forgeron du fer et de l'airain. La sœur de Tubalcaïn fut Noéma.
23 And Lameth seide to his wyues Ada and Sella, Ye wyues of Lameth, here my vois, and herkne my word; for Y haue slayn a man bi my wounde, and a yong wexynge man bi my `violent betyng;
Or, Lamech dit à ses femmes Ada et Sella: Écoutez ma voix, femmes de Lamech, faites attention à mes paroles: J'ai tué un homme pour mon malheur, un jeune homme pour ma meurtrissure.
24 veniaunce schal be youun seuenfold of Cayn, forsothe of Lameth seuentisithis seuensithis.
On eût vengé sept fois le meurtre de Caïn; celui de Lamech le serait septante fois sept.
25 Also yit Adam knewe his wijf, and sche childide a sone, and clepide his name Seth, and seide, God hath put to me another seed for Abel, whom Cayn killide.
Or, Adam connut Éve sa femme, et, ayant conçu, elle enfanta un fils à qui elle donna le nom de Seth (substitué). Car, dit-elle, Dieu a fait sortir de moi un autre rejeton, en place d'Abel que Caïn a tué.
26 But also a sone was borun to Seth, which sone he clepide Enos; this Enos bigan to clepe inwardli the name of the Lord.
Et à Seth naquit un fils, auquel il donna le nom d'Enos; celui-ci, plein de confiance, invoqua le nom du Seigneur Dieu.
