< Genesis 32 >

1 Forsothe Jacob wente forth in the weie in which he began, and the aungels of the Lord metten him.
and Jacob to go: went to/for way: journey his and to fall on in/on/with him messenger: angel God
2 And whanne he hadde seyn hem, he seide, These ben the castels of God; and he clepide the name of that place Manaym, that is, castels.
and to say Jacob like/as as which to see: see them camp God this and to call: call by name [the] place [the] he/she/it Mahanaim
3 Sotheli Jacob sente bifore him also messangeris to Esau, his brother, in to the lond of Seir, in the cuntrey of Edom;
and to send: depart Jacob messenger to/for face: before his to(wards) Esau brother: male-sibling his land: country/planet [to] Seir land: country Edom
4 and comaundide to hem, and seide, Thus speke ye to my lord Esau, Thi brothir Jacob seith these thingis, Y was a pilgrym at Laban, `and Y was `til in to present dai;
and to command [obj] them to/for to say thus to say [emph?] to/for lord my to/for Esau thus to say servant/slave your Jacob with Laban to sojourn and to delay till now
5 Y haue oxun, and assis, and scheep, and seruauntis, and hand maydis, and Y sende now a message to my lord, that Y fynde grace in thi siyt.
and to be to/for me cattle and donkey flock and servant/slave and maidservant and to send: depart [emph?] to/for to tell to/for lord my to/for to find favor in/on/with eye: seeing your
6 And the messageris turneden ayen to Jacob, and seiden, We camen to Esau, thi brother, and lo! he hastith in to thi comyng, with foure hundrid men.
and to return: return [the] messenger to(wards) Jacob to/for to say to come (in): come to(wards) brother: male-sibling your to(wards) Esau and also to go: come to/for to encounter: meet you and four hundred man with him
7 Jacob dredde greetli, and he was aferd, and departide the puple that was with hym, and he departide the flockis, and scheep, and oxun, and camels, in to twei cumpenyes;
and to fear Jacob much and be distressed to/for him and to divide [obj] [the] people which with him and [obj] [the] flock and [obj] [the] cattle and [the] camel to/for two camp
8 and seide, If Esau schal come to o cumpeny, and schal smyte it, the tothir cumpeny which is residue schal be saued.
and to say if to come (in): come Esau to(wards) [the] camp [the] one and to smite him and to be [the] camp [the] to remain to/for survivor
9 And Jacob seide, A! God of my fadir Abraham, and God of my fadir Isaac, A! Lord, that seidist to me, Turne thou ayen in to thi lond, and in to the place of thi birthe, and Y schal do wel to thee,
and to say Jacob God father my Abraham and God father my Isaac LORD [the] to say to(wards) me to return: return to/for land: country/planet your and to/for relatives your and be good with you
10 Y am lesse than alle thi merciful doyngis, and than thi treuthe which thou hast fillid to thi seruaunt; with my staf Y passide this Jordan, and now Y go ayen with twei cumpanyes;
be small from all [the] kindness and from all [the] truth: faithful which to make: do with servant/slave your for in/on/with rod my to pass [obj] [the] Jordan [the] this and now to be to/for two camp
11 delyuere thou me fro the hond of my brothir Esau, for Y drede him greetli, lest he come and sle the modris with the sones.
to rescue me please from hand: power brother: male-sibling my from hand: power Esau for afraid I [obj] him lest to come (in): come and to smite me mother upon son: child
12 Thou spakist that thou schuldist do wel to me, and shuldist alarge my seed as the grauel of the see, that mai not be noumbrid for mychilnesse.
and you(m. s.) to say be good be good with you and to set: make [obj] seed: children your like/as sand [the] sea which not to recount from abundance
13 And whanne Jacob hadde slept there in that nyyt, he departide of tho thingis whiche he hadde yiftis to Esau, his brothir,
and to lodge there in/on/with night [the] he/she/it and to take: take from [the] to come (in): bring in/on/with hand: to his offering: gift to/for Esau brother: male-sibling his
14 two hundrid geet, and twenti buckis of geet, two hundrid scheep, and twenti rammys,
goat hundred and male goat twenty ewe hundred and ram twenty
15 camels fulle with her foolis thretti, fourti kyen, and twenti boolis, twenti sche assis, and ten foolis of hem.
camel to suckle and son: young animal their thirty heifer forty and bullock ten she-ass twenty and colt ten
16 And he sente bi the hondis of his seruauntis alle flockis bi hem silf; and he seide to hise children, Go ye bifore me, and a space be betwixe flok and flok.
and to give: give in/on/with hand: to servant/slave his flock flock to/for alone him and to say to(wards) servant/slave his to pass to/for face: before my and space to set: put between flock and between flock
17 And he comaundide to the formere, and seide, If thou schalt mete my brothir Esau, and he schal axe thee, whos man thou art, ether whidir thou goist, ether whos ben these thingis whiche thou suest,
and to command [obj] [the] first to/for to say for to meet you Esau brother: male-sibling my and to ask you to/for to say to/for who? you(m. s.) and where? to go: went and to/for who? these to/for face: before your
18 thou schalt answere, Of thi seruaunt Jacob, he hath sent yiftis to his lord Esau, and he cometh aftir vs.

19 In lijk maner, he yaf comaundementis to the secounde, and to the thridde, and to alle that sueden flockis; and seide, Speke ye bi the same wordis to Esau,
and to command also [obj] [the] second also [obj] [the] third also [obj] all [the] to go: follow after [the] flock to/for to say like/as Chronicles [the] this to speak: speak [emph?] to(wards) Esau in/on/with to find you [obj] him
20 whanne ye fynden hym, and ye schulen adde, Also Jacob hym silf thi seruaunt sueth oure weie. For Jacob seide, Y schal plese Esau with yiftis that goon bifore, and aftirward Y schal se hym; in hap he schal be mercyful to me.
and to say also behold servant/slave your Jacob after us for to say to atone face of his in/on/with offering: gift [the] to go: went to/for face: before my and after so to see: see face his perhaps to lift: kindness face: kindness my
21 And so the yiftis yeden bifore hym; sotheli he dwellide in that nyyt in the tentis.

22 And whanne Jacob hadde arise auysseli, he took hise twei wyues, and so many seruauntessis with enleuen sones, and passide the forthe of Jaboth.
and to arise: rise in/on/with night he/she/it and to take: take [obj] two woman: wife his and [obj] two maidservant his and [obj] one ten youth his and to pass [obj] ford Jabbok
23 And whanne alle thingis that perteyneden to hym weren led ouer, he dwellide aloone, and, lo!
and to take: take them and to pass them [obj] [the] torrent: river and to pass [obj] which to/for him
24 a man wrastlide with him til to the morwetid.
and to remain Jacob to/for alone him and to wrestle man with him till to ascend: dawn [the] dawn
25 And whanne the man seiy that he miyte not ouercome Jacob, he touchide the senewe of Jacobis hipe, and it driede anoon.
and to see: see for not be able to/for him and to touch in/on/with palm: dish thigh his and to dislocate/hang palm: dish thigh Jacob in/on/with to wrestle he with him
26 And he seide to Jacob, Leeue thou me, for the morewtid stieth now. Jacob answeride, Y schal not leeue thee, no but thou blesse me.
and to say to send: let go me for to ascend: dawn [the] dawn and to say not to send: let go you that if: except if: except to bless me
27 Therfore he seide, What name is to thee? He answeride, Jacob.
and to say to(wards) him what? name your and to say Jacob
28 And the man seide, Thi name schal no more be clepid Jacob, but Israel; for if thou were strong ayens God, hou miche more schalt thou haue power ayens men.
and to say not Jacob to say still name your that if: except if: except Israel for to strive with God and with human and be able
29 Jacob axide him, Seie thou to me bi what name thou art clepid? He answerde, Whi axist thou my name, whiche is wondirful? And he blesside Jacob in the same place.
and to ask Jacob and to say to tell [emph?] please name your and to say to/for what? this to ask to/for name my and to bless [obj] him there
30 And Jacob clepide the name of that place Fanuel, and seide, Y siy the Lord face to face, and my lijf is maad saaf.
and to call: call by Jacob name [the] place Peniel for to see: see God face to(wards) face and to rescue soul: life my
31 And anoon the sunne roos to hym, aftir that he passide Fanuel; forsothe he haltide in the foot.
and to rise to/for him [the] sun like/as as which to pass [obj] Peniel and he/she/it to limp upon thigh his
32 For which cause the sones of Israel eten not `til in to present day the senewe, that driede in the hipe of Jacob; for the man touchide the senewe of Jacobs hipe, and it driede.
upon so not to eat son: descendant/people Israel [obj] sinew [the] hamstring which upon palm: dish [the] thigh till [the] day: today [the] this for to touch in/on/with palm: dish thigh Jacob in/on/with sinew [the] hamstring
