Genesis 3
1 But and the serpent was feller than alle lyuynge beestis of erthe, whiche the Lord God hadde maad. Which serpent seide to the womman, Why comaundide God to you, that ye schulden not ete of ech tre of paradis?
Or le serpent était le plus fin de tous les animaux des champs que l'Eternel Dieu avait faits; et il dit à la femme: Quoi! Dieu a dit, vous ne mangerez point de tout arbre du jardin?
2 To whom the womman answerde, We eten of the fruyt of trees that ben in paradis;
Et la femme répondit au serpent: Nous mangeons du fruit des arbres du jardin;
3 sothely God commaundide to vs, that we schulden not eate of the fruyt of the tre, which is in the myddis of paradijs, and that we schulden not touche it, lest perauenture we dien.
Mais quant au fruit de l'arbre qui est au milieu du jardin, Dieu a dit: Vous n'en mangerez point, et vous ne le toucherez point, de peur que vous ne mouriez.
4 Forsothe the serpent seide to the womman, ye schulen not die bi deeth;
Alors le serpent dit à la femme: Vous ne mourrez nullement;
5 for whi God woot that in what euere dai ye schulen ete therof, youre iyen schulen be opened, and ye schulen be as Goddis, knowynge good and yuel.
Mais Dieu sait qu'au jour que vous en mangerez, vos yeux seront ouverts, et vous serez comme des Dieux, sachant le bien et le mal.
6 Therfore the womman seiy that the tre was good, and swete to ete, and fair to the iyen, and delitable in bi holdyng; and sche took of the fruyt therof, and eet, and yaf to hir hosebande, and he eet.
La femme donc voyant que [le fruit] de l'arbre était bon à manger, et qu'il était agréable à la vue, et que [cet] arbre était désirable pour donner de la science, en prit du fruit, et en mangea, et elle en donna aussi à son mari [qui était] avec elle, et il en mangea.
7 And the iyen of bothe weren openid; and whanne thei knowen that thei weren nakid, thei sewden the leeues of a fige tre, and maden brechis to hem silf.
Et les yeux de tous deux furent ouverts; ils connurent qu'ils étaient nus, et ils cousirent ensemble des feuilles de figuier, et s'en firent des ceintures.
8 And whanne thei herden the vois of the Lord God goynge in paradijs at the wynd after myddai, Adam and his wijf hidden hem fro the face of the Lord God in the middis of the tre of paradijs.
Alors ils ouïrent au vent du jour la voix de l'Eternel Dieu qui se promenait par le jardin; et Adam et sa femme se cachèrent de devant l'Eternel Dieu, parmi les arbres du jardin.
9 And the Lord God clepide Adam, and seide to hym, Where art thou?
Mais l'Eternel Dieu appela Adam, et lui dit: Où es-tu?
10 And Adam seide, Y herde thi vois in paradijs, and Y drede, for Y was nakid, and Y hidde me.
Et il répondit: J'ai entendu ta voix dans le jardin, et j'ai craint, parce que j'étais nu, et je me suis caché.
11 To whom the Lord seide, Who forsothe schewide to thee that thou were nakid, no but for thou hast ete of the tre of which Y comaundide to thee that thou schuldist not ete?
Et [Dieu] dit: Qui t'a montré que tu [étais] nu? N'as-tu pas mangé [du fruit] de l'arbre dont je t'avais défendu de manger?
12 And Adam seide, The womman which thou yauest felowe to me, yaf me of the tre, and Y eet.
Et Adam répondit: La femme que tu m'as donnée [pour être] avec moi, m'a donné [du fruit] de l'arbre, et j'en ai mangé.
13 And the Lord seide to the womman, Whi didist thou this thing? Which answerde, The serpent disseyued me, and Y eet.
Et l'Eternel Dieu dit à la femme: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? Et la femme répondit: Le serpent m'a séduite, et j'en ai mangé.
14 And the Lord God seide to the serpent, For thou didist this, thou schalt be cursid among alle lyuynge thingis and vnresonable beestis of erthe; thou schalt go on thi brest, and thou schalt ete erthe in alle daies of thi liif;
Alors l'Eternel Dieu dit au serpent: Parce que tu as fait cela, tu seras maudit entre tout le bétail, et entre toutes les bêtes des champs; tu marcheras sur ton ventre, et tu mangeras la poussière tous les jours de ta vie.
15 Y schal sette enemytees bitwixe thee and the womman, and bitwixe thi seed and hir seed; sche schal breke thin heed, and thou schalt sette aspies to hir heele.
Et je mettrai inimitié entre toi et la femme, et entre ta semence et la semence de la femme; cette [semence] te brisera la tête, et tu lui briseras le talon.
16 Also God seide to the womman, Y schal multiplie thi wretchidnessis and thi conseyuyngis; in sorewe thou schalt bere thi children; and thou schalt be vndur power of the hosebonde, and he schal be lord of thee.
[Et] il dit à la femme: J'augmenterai beaucoup ton travail et ta grossesse; tu enfanteras en travail les enfants; tes désirs se [rapporteront] à ton mari, et il dominera sur toi.
17 Sothely God seyde to Adam, For thou herdist the voys of thi wijf, and hast ete of the tree, of which Y comaundide to thee that thou schuldist not ete, the erthe schal be cursid in thi werk; in traueylis thou schalt ete therof in alle daies of thi lijf;
Puis il dit à Adam: Parce que tu as obéi à la parole de ta femme, et que tu as mangé [du fruit] de l'arbre duquel je t'avais commandé, en disant: Tu n'en mangeras point, la terre sera maudite à cause de toi; tu en mangeras [les fruits] en travail, tous les jours de ta vie.
18 it schal brynge forth thornes and breris to thee, and thou schalt ete eerbis of the erthe;
Et elle te produira des épines, et des chardons; et tu mangeras l'herbe des champs.
19 in swoot of thi cheer thou schalt ete thi breed, til thou turne ayen in to the erthe of which thou art takun; for thou art dust, and thou schalt turne ayen in to dust.
Tu mangeras le pain à la sueur de ton visage, jusqu'à ce que tu retournes en la terre, car tu en as été pris; parce que tu es poudre, tu retourneras aussi en poudre.
20 And Adam clepide the name of his wijf Eue, for sche was the moder of alle men lyuynge.
Et Adam appela sa femme Eve; parce qu'elle a été la mère de tous les vivants.
21 And the Lord God made cootis of skynnys to Adam and Eue his wijf, and clothide hem; and seide, Lo!
Et l'Eternel Dieu fit à Adam et à sa femme des robes de peaux, et les en revêtit.
22 Adam is maad as oon of vs, and knowith good and yuel; now therfore se ye, lest perauenture he putte his hond, and take of the tre of lijf, and ete, and lyue with outen ende.
Et l'Eternel Dieu dit: Voici, l'homme est devenu comme l'un de nous, sachant le bien et le mal; mais maintenant [il faut prendre garde] qu'il n'avance sa main, et aussi qu'il ne prenne de l'arbre de vie, et qu'il n'en mange, et ne vive à toujours.
23 And the Lord God sente hym out of paradijs of likyng, that he schulde worche the erthe, of which he was takun.
Et l'Eternel Dieu le mit hors du jardin d'Héden, pour labourer la terre, de laquelle il avait été pris.
24 And God castide out Adam, and settide bifore paradis of lykyng cherubyn, and a swerd of flawme and turnynge aboute to kepe the weie of the tre of lijf.
Ainsi il chassa l'homme, et mit des Chérubins vers l'Orient du jardin d'Héden, avec une lame d'épée qui se tournait çà et là, pour garder le chemin de l'arbre de vie.
