Genesis 29
1 Therfor Jacob passide forth, and cam in to the eest lond;
Et levant les pieds, Jacob s'en alla au pays des enfants de l'orient.
2 and seiy a pit in the feeld, and thre flockis of scheep restynge bisidis it, for whi scheep weren watrid therof, and the mouth therof was closid with a greet stoon.
Et il regarda, et voici, c'était une fontaine dans la campagne, et voici, là à côté reposaient trois troupeaux de brebis; car c'est à cette fontaine qu'on abreuvait les troupeaux, et grande était la pierre qui en fermait l'ouverture.
3 And the custom was that whanne alle scheep weren gaderid togidere, thei schulden turne awei the stoon, and whanne the flockis weren fillid thei schulden put it eft on the mouth of the pit.
Et tous les troupeaux y étaient ramassés, puis les bergers écartaient la pierre de l'ouverture de la fontaine, et abreuvaient leurs troupeaux, et ramenaient la pierre sur l'ouverture de la fontaine à sa place.
4 And Jacob seide to the scheepherdis, Brithren, of whennus ben ye? Whiche answeriden, Of Aran.
Alors Jacob leur dit: Mes frères, d'où êtes-vous? Et ils répondirent: Nous sommes de Charan.
5 And he axide hem and seide, Wher ye knowen Laban, the sone of Nachor? Thei seiden, We knowen.
Et il leur dit: Connaissez-vous Laban, fils de Nachor? Et ils répondirent: Nous le connaissons.
6 Jacob seide, Is he hool? Thei seiden, He is in good staat; and lo! Rachel, his douytir, cometh with his flok.
Et il leur dit: Tout va-t-il bien pour lui? Et ils répondirent: Bien; et voici venir Rachel, sa fille, avec son troupeau.
7 And Jacob seide, Yit myche of the dai is to come, and it is not tyme that the flockis be led ayen to the fooldis; sotheli yyue ye drynk to the scheep, and so lede ye hem ayen to mete.
Et il dit: Voici, il est encore grand jour; et il n'est pas temps de réunir les troupeaux; abreuvez les brebis, puis allez, faites-les paître!
8 Whiche answeriden, We moun not til alle scheep be gederid to gidere, and til we remouen the stoon fro the mouth of the pit to watir the flockis.
Et ils répondirent: Nous ne le pouvons pas que tous les troupeaux ne soient ramassés; c'est alors qu'on écarte la pierre de l'ouverture de la fontaine, et nous abreuvons les brebis.
9 Yit thei spaken, and lo! Rachel cam with the scheep of hir fadir.
Il s'entretenait encore avec eux, lorsque Rachel arriva avec le troupeau de son père, car elle était bergère.
10 And whanne Jacob seiy hir, and knewe the douytir of his modris brothir, and the scheep of Laban his vncle, he remeuyde the stoon with which the pit was closid;
Et lorsque Jacob vit Rachel, fille de Laban, frère de sa mère, et le troupeau de Laban, frère de sa mère, il s'approcha, et écarta la pierre de l'ouverture de la fontaine, et abreuva le troupeau de Laban, frère de sa mère.
11 and whanne the flok was watrid, he kisside hir, and he wepte with `vois reisid.
Et Jacob embrassa Rachel, et éleva sa voix et pleura.
12 And he schewide to hir that he was the brothir of hir fadir, and the sone of Rebecca; and sche hastide, and telde to hir fadir.
Et Jacob découvrit à Rachel qu'il était parent de son père, et qu'il était fils de Rebecca; et elle courut en donner avis à son père.
13 And whanne he hadde herd, that Jacob, the sone of his sistir, cam, he ran ayens hym, and he biclippide Jacob and kisside hym, and ledde in to his hows. Forsothe whanne the causis of the iurney weren herd,
Et lorsque Laban ouït parler de Jacob, fils de sa sœur, il accourut au devant de lui, et l'étreignit et l'embrassa, et l'amena dans sa maison; et il raconta à Laban tous ces détails.
14 Laban answeride, Thou art my boon and my fleisch. And aftir that the daies of o moneth weren fillid, Laban seide to him,
Alors Laban lui dit: Oui, tu es ma chair et mes os! Et il demeura chez lui un mois de temps.
15 `Whethir for thou art my brothir, thou schalt serue me frely? seie thou what mede thou schalt take.
Alors Laban dit à Jacob: Mais n'es-tu pas mon parent, et me servirais-tu gratuitement? Dis-moi quel doit être ton salaire.
16 Forsothe Laban hadde twei douytris, the name of the more was Lya, sotheli the lesse was clepid Rachel;
Or Laban avait deux filles, l'aînée s'appelait Léa et la cadette, Rachel;
17 but Lya was blere iyed, Rachel was of fair face, and semeli in siyt.
et Léa avait les yeux délicats, mais Rachel était belle de taille et belle de figure.
18 And Jacob louede Rachel, and seide, Y schal serue thee seuene yeer for Rachel thi lesse douytir.
Et Jacob aimait Rachel et dit: Je te servirai sept ans pour Rachel, ta fille cadette.
19 Laban answeride, It is betere that Y yyue hir to thee than to anothir man; dwelle thou at me.
Et Laban dit: J'aime mieux te la donner que de la donner à un autre homme: reste avec moi!
20 Therfor Jacob seruyde seuene yeer for Rachel; and the daies semyden fewe to hym for the greetnesse of loue.
Et Jacob servit sept années pour Rachel, et elles lui semblèrent comme quelques jours, parce qu'il l'aimait.
21 And he seide to Laban, Yyue thou my wijf to me, for the tyme is fillid that Y entre to hir.
Et Jacob dit à Laban: Donne-moi ma femme, car mon temps est accompli, afin que j'habite avec elle.
22 And whanne many cumpenyes of freendis weren clepid to the feeste, he made weddyngis,
Alors Laban rassembla tous les gens du lieu, et fit un festin.
23 and in the euentid Laban brouyte in to hym Lya his douytir,
Et le soir il prit Léa, sa fille, et la lui amena, et il s'approcha d'elle.
24 and yaf an handmaide, Selfa bi name, to the douyter. And whanne Jacob hadde entrid to hir bi custom, whanne the morewtid was maad, he seiy Lya,
Et Laban donna à Léa, sa fille, pour servante, Zilpa sa servante.
25 and seide to his wyues fadir, What is it that thou woldist do? wher Y seruede not thee for Rachel? whi hast thou disseyued me?
Et le matin, voilà que c'était Léa! Et il dit à Laban: Pourquoi en as-tu agi ainsi avec moi? N'est-ce pas pour, Rachel que je t'ai servi? et pourquoi m'as-tu trompé?
26 Laban answerde, It is not custom in oure place that we yyue first the `lesse douytris to weddyngis;
Et Laban dit: Ce n'est pas la pratique de ce lieu de placer la cadette avant l'aînée.
27 fille thou the wouke of daies of this couplyng, and Y schal yyue to thee also this Rachel, for the werk in which thou schalt serue me bi othere seuene yeer.
Passe la semaine [de noces] de celle-ci, puis nous te donnerons aussi l'autre pour le service que tu feras chez moi sept nouvelles années encore.
28 Jacob assentide to the couenaunt, and whanne the wouke was passid,
Et ainsi fit Jacob, qui accomplit la semaine de Léa; puis il lui donna sa fille Rachel pour femme.
29 he weddide Rachel, to whom the fadir hadde youe Bala seruauntesse.
Et Laban donna pour servante à Rachel, sa fille, Bilha, sa servante.
30 And at the laste he vside the weddyngis desirid, and settide the loue of the `wijf suynge bifore the former; and he seruede at Laban seuene othere yeer.
Et il habita aussi avec Rachel et il aima aussi Rachel plus que Léa; et il le servit sept nouvelles années encore.
31 Forsothe the Lord seiy that he dispiside Lya, and openyde hir wombe while the sistir dwellide bareyn.
Et l'Éternel voyant que Léa n'était pas aimée, la rendit féconde, tandis que Rachel était stérile.
32 And Lia childide a sone conseyued, and clepide his name Ruben, and seide, The Lord seiy my mekenesse; now myn hosebonde schal loue me.
Et Léa devint enceinte, et enfanta un fils, et elle l'appela du nom de Ruben (voyez un fils); car elle dit: L'Éternel a vu ma misère; et maintenant mon mari m'aimera.
33 And eft sche conseyuede, `and childide a sone, and seide, For the Lord seiy that Y was dispisid, he yaf also this sone to me; and sche clepide his name Symeon.
Et elle devint encore enceinte et enfanta un fils et dit: L'Éternel a ouï que je ne suis pas aimée, et Il m'a accordé aussi celui-ci. Et elle l'appela du nom de Siméon (exaucement).
34 And sche conseyuede the thridde tyme, and childide anothir sone, and she seide also, Now myn hosebonde schal be couplid to me, for Y childide thre sones to him; and therfor sche clepide his name Leuy.
Et elle devint encore enceinte, et enfanta un fils et dit: Pour cette fois mon mari s'attachera à moi, car je lui ai enfanté trois fils; c'est pourquoi on l'appela du nom de Lévi (attachement).
35 The fourthe tyme sche conseyuede, and childide a sone, and seide, Now I schal knouleche to the Lord; and herfor she clepide his name Judas; and ceesside to childe.
Et elle devint encore enceinte et enfanta un fils et dit: Cette fois je louerai l'Éternel; c'est pourquoi elle l'appela du nom de Juda (louange de Dieu). Et elle cessa d'enfanter.
