Genesis 24
1 Forsothe Abraham was eld, and of many daies, and the Lord hadde blessid hym in alle thingis.
Abraham était déjà vieux, ayant vécu bien des jours; et le Seigneur l'avait béni en toutes choses.
2 And he seide to the eldere seruaunt of his hows, that was souereyn on alle thingis that he hadde, Put thou thin hond vndur myn hipe,
Il dit à son serviteur le plus âgé de sa maison, l'intendant de toutes ses possessions (Éliézer): Mets ta main sous ma cuisse.
3 that Y coniure thee bi the Lord God of heuene and of erthe, that thou take not a wijf to my sone of the douytris of Chanaan, among whiche Y dwelle;
Je veux t'adjurer, par le Seigneur Dieu du ciel et de la terre, de ne pas prendre une femme pour mon fils Isaac parmi les filles des Chananéens, au milieu desquels je suis passager,
4 but that thou go to my lond and kynrede, and therof take a wijf to my sone Ysaac.
Mais d'aller en la terre où je suis né, dans ma tribu, et de ramener de là une femme pour mon fils Isaac.
5 The seruaunt aunswerde, If the womman nyle come with me in to this lond, whether Y owe lede ayen thi sone to the place, fro which thou yedist out?
Le serviteur lui dit: Si par hasard la femme ne veut pas revenir ici avec moi, ferai-je retourner ton fils dans la terre d'où tu es venu?
6 Abraham seide, Be war, lest ony tyme thou lede ayen thidur my sone;
Abraham reprit: Garde-toi de faire retourner mon fils en ce lieu.
7 the Lord of heuene that took me fro the hows of my fadir, and fro the lond of my birthe, which spak to me, and swoor, and seide, Y schal yyue this lond to thi seed, he schal sende his aungel bifore thee, and thou schalt take fro thennus a wijf to my sone; forsothe if the womman nyle sue thee,
Le Seigneur Dieu du ciel et de la terre, qui m'a fait sortir de la maison de mon père, et du pays où je suis né, Celui qui m'a parlé, qui m'a fait serment, disant: Je donnerai cette terre à toi et à ta race; lui-même enverra son ange devant toi, et tu ramèneras de là une femme à mon fils.
8 thou schalt not be holdun bi the ooth; netheles lede not ayen my sone thidur.
Mais si la femme ne veut point venir ici avec toi, tu seras dégagé de ton serment, seulement ne fais point retourner là-bas mon fils.
9 Therfore the seruaunt puttide his hond vndur the hipe of Abraham, his lord, and swoor to him on this word.
Et le serviteur mit sa main sous la cuisse d'Abraham son seigneur, et il lui prêta serment sur cette affaire.
10 And he took ten camels of the floc of his lord, and yede forth, and bar with him of alle the goodis of his lord; and he yede forth, and cam to Mesopotanye, to the citee of Nachor.
Après quoi, le serviteur prit avec lui dix chamelles, parmi les chameaux de son maître, et une part de tous les objets précieux de son seigneur; et, s'étant mis en marche, il alla en Mésopotamie, dans la ville de Nachor.
11 And whanne he hadde maad the camels to reste with out the citee, bisidis the pit of watir, in the euentid, in that tyme in which wymmen ben wont to go out to drawe watir,
Comme il était près de la ville, vers le puits des Eaux, sur le soir, au moment où les femmes sortent pour puiser de l'eau, il fit arrêter ses chamelles.
12 he seide, Lord God of my lord Abraham, Y biseche, meete with me to dai, and do mersi with my lord Abraham.
Et il dit: Seigneur Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, préparez devant moi une heureuse voie aujourd'hui, et soyez miséricordieux envers mon seigneur Abraham.
13 Lo! Y stonde nyy the welle of watir, and the douytris of enhabiters of this citee schulen go out to drawe watir;
Je me suis arrêté vers cette fontaine, au moment où les filles des habitants de la ville sortent pour puiser de l'eau.
14 therfor the damysel to which Y schal seie, Bowe doun thi watir pot that Y drynke, and schal answere, Drynke thou, but also Y schal yyue drynke to thi camels, thilke it is which thou hast maad redi to thi seruaunt Ysaac; and bi this Y schal vndirstonde that thou hast do mersi with my lord Abraham.
Que la vierge à laquelle je dirai: Penche ta cruche afin que je boive, et qui me dira: Bois, et je ferai boire tes chamelles jusqu'à ce qu'elles cessent de boire, soit celle que vous aurez préparée pour votre serviteur Isaac; par là je reconnaîtrai que vous avez été miséricordieux envers mon seigneur Abraham.
15 And he hadde not yit fillid the wordis with ynne hym silf, and lo! Rebecca, the douytir of Batuel, sone of Melcha, wijf of Nachor, brothir of Abraham, yede out, hauynge a watir pot in hir schuldre;
Il avait à peine achevé ces paroles au fond de son cœur que Rébécca, celle qui était née à Bathuel, fils de Melcha, femme de Nachor, frère d'Abraham, sortait avec une cruche sur l'épaule.
16 a damysel ful comeli, and faireste virgyn, and vnknowun of man. Sotheli sche cam doun to the welle, and fillide the watir pot, and turnide ayen.
La jeune fille était d'une grande beauté; elle était vierge, nul homme ne l'avait connue; étant descendue à la fontaine, elle remplit sa cruche et remonta.
17 And the seruaunt mette hir, and seide, Yyue thou to me a litil of the watir of thi pot to drynke.
Le serviteur courut à sa rencontre, et dit: Fais-moi boire un peu d'eau de ta cruche.
18 Which answerde, Drynke thou, my lord. And anoon sche dide doun the watir pot on hir schuldre, and yaf drynk to hym.
Elle dit aussitôt: Bois, seigneur; et, se hâtant, elle descendit la cruche sur son bras, et le fit boire jusqu'à ce qu'il cessât de boire.
19 And whanne he hadde drunke, sche addide, But also Y schal drawe watir to thi camelis, til alle drynken.
Elle dit ensuite: Je puiserai aussi de l'eau pour tes chamelles, jusqu'à ce que toutes aient bu.
20 And sche helde out the watir pot in trouyis, and ran ayen to the pit, to drawe watir, and sche yaf watir drawun to alle the camels.
Et, se hâtant, elle vida sa cruche dans l'abreuvoir, courut au puits pour puiser encore, et puisa pour toutes les chamelles.
21 Sotheli he bihelde hir priueli, and wolde wite whether the Lord hadde sped his wei, ethir nay.
Cependant, l'homme l'observait, en gardant le silence, pour connaître si le Seigneur lui avait heureusement préparé sa voie ou non.
22 Therfor after that the camels drunken, the man brouyte forth goldun eere ryngis, weiynge twei siclis, and as many bies of the arm, in the weiyte of ten siclis.
Lorsque toutes les chamelles eurent cessé de boire, il prit des boucles d'oreilles d'or pesant une drachme, et lui mit au bras deux bracelets pesant dix drachmes d'or.
23 And he seide to hir, Whos douyter art thou? schewe thou to me, is ony place in the hows of thi fadir to dwelle?
Puis il l'interrogea, en disant: De qui es-tu fille? dis-moi si chez ton père il y a place où nous loger.
24 Which answerde, Y am the douyter of Batuel, sone of Nachor, whom Melcha childide to him.
Elle répondit: Je suis la fille de Bathuel, fils de Melcha qui l'a enfanté à Nachor.
25 And sche addide, seiynge, Also ful myche of prouendre and of hey is at vs, and a large place to dwelle.
Il y a, ajouta-t-elle, chez nous beaucoup de paille et de foin, et place où vous loger.
26 The man bowide hym silf,
Et l'homme rendant grâces, adora le Seigneur, en disant:
27 and worschipide the Lord, and seide, Blessid be the Lord God of my lord Abraham, which God took not aweie his mersy and treuthe fro my lord, and ledde me bi riyt weie in to the hous of the brother of my lord.
Béni soit le Seigneur Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, qui n'a point détourné de mon seigneur sa justice et sa vérité; le Seigneur a heureusement dirigé mes pas jusqu'à la maison du frère de mon seigneur.
28 And so the damesel ran, and telde in the hous of hir modir alle thingis whiche sche hadde herd.
Et l'enfant, ayant couru, annonça dans la maison de sa mère ce qui venait de se passer.
29 Sotheli Rebecca hadde a brothir, Laban bi name, whiche yede out hastili to the man, where he was with out forth.
Or, Rébécca avait un frère nommé Laban; celui-ci sortit à la hâte et courut vers l'homme auprès de la fontaine.
30 And whanne he hadde seyn the eere ryngis and byes of the arm in the hondis of his sister, and hadde herd alle the wordis of hir tellynge, the man spak to me these thingis, he cam to the man that stood bisidis the camels, and nyy the welle of watir,
Lorsqu'il eut vu les boucles d'oreilles et les bracelets aux bras de sa sœur, lorsqu'il eut entendu Rébécca dire: L'homme m'a parlé ainsi, il vint à son tour vers l'homme qui se tenait, avec ses chamelles, auprès de la fontaine.
31 and seide to him, Entre thou, the blessid of the Lord; whi stondist thou with outforth? I haue maad redi the hows, and a place to thi camels.
Et il lui dit: Viens, entre, ô toi béni du Seigneur: pourquoi restes-tu dehors? j'ai préparé la maison et une place pour tes chamelles.
32 And he brouyte hym in to the ynne, and unsadlide the camels, and yaf prouendre, and hey, and watir to waische the feet of camels, and of men that camen with hym.
Et l'homme entra dans la maison; Laban ôta les bâts des chamelles, donna de la paille et du foin aux chamelles, ainsi que de l'eau à l'homme et aux hommes de sa suite, pour se laver les pieds.
33 And breed was set forth in his siyt, which seide, Y schal not ete til Y speke my wordis. He answerde to the man, Speke thou.
Puis, il leur offrit des pains à manger, mais l'homme dit: Je ne mangerai point que je n'aie dit ce que j'ai à dire; et Laban dit: Parle.
34 And the man seide, Y am the seruaunt of Abraham,
L'homme dit alors: Je suis serviteur d'Abraham.
35 and the Lord hath blessid my lord greetli, and he is maad greet; and God yaf to hym scheep, and oxun, siluer, and gold, seruauntis, and handmaides, camels, and assis.
Le Seigneur a béni extrêmement mon seigneur; il l'a grandi, il lui a donné des menus troupeaux, et des bœufs, et de l'argent, et de l'or, et des serviteurs, et des servantes, et des chameaux, et des ânes.
36 And Sare, `the wijf of my lord, childide a sone to my lord in his eelde, and he yaf alle thingis that he hadde to that sone.
De plus Sarra, femme de mon seigneur, a enfanté à mon seigneur, dans ses vieux jours, un fils unique, auquel mon seigneur a donné tout ce qu'il possédait.
37 And my lord chargide me greetli, and seide, Thou schalt not take to my sone a wijf of the douytris of Canaan, in whos lond Y dwelle,
Et mon seigneur m'a adjuré, disant: Tu ne prendras pas une femme pour mon fils parmi les filles des Chananéens, au milieu desquels je suis passager en leur terre.
38 but thou schalt go to the hous of my fadir, and of myn kynrede thou schalt take a wijf to my sone.
Mais tu t'en iras dans la maison de mon père et dans ma tribu, et tu ramèneras de là une femme pour mon fils.
39 Forsothe Y answerde to my lord, What if the womman nyle come with me?
Peut-être, répondis-je à mon seigneur, la femme ne voudra-t-elle pas venir avec moi.
40 He seide, The Lord in whose siyt Y go, schal sende his aungel with thee, and he schal dresse thi weie; and thou schalt take a wijf to my sone of my kynrede, and of my fadris hows.
Et il m'a dit: Le Seigneur Dieu, devant qui j'ai trouvé grâce, enverra son ange avec toi, et préparera heureusement ta voie, et tu prendras une femme pour mon fils, en ma tribu, dans la maison de mon père.
41 Thou schalt be innocent fro my curs, whanne thou comest to my kynesmen, and thei yyuen not `the womman to thee.
Si, quand tu seras allé dans ma tribu, ils ne t'accordent rien, tu seras délié de ma malédiction et dégagé du serment que je t'ai fait prêter.
42 Therfor Y cam to day to the welle of watir, and Y seide, Lord God of my lord Abraham, if thou hast dressid my weie in which Y go now, lo!
Or, étant arrivé aujourd'hui vers la fontaine, j'ai dit: Seigneur Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, si vous dirigez heureusement mes pas,
43 Y stonde bisidis the welle of watir, and the maide that schal go out to drawe watir herith me, yyue thou to me a litil of water to drynke of thi pot,
Voilà que je me suis arrêté vers la fontaine, au moment où les filles des hommes de la ville sortent pour puiser de l'eau; que la vierge à laquelle je dirai: Fais-moi boire un peu d'eau de ta cruche,
44 and seith to me, And thou drynke, and Y schal drawe watir to thi camels, thilke is the womman which the Lord hath maad redi to the sone of my lord.
Et qui dira: Bois, je vais puiser de l'eau pour tes chamelles; que cette vierge soit la femme préparée par le Seigneur pour son serviteur Isaac; par là je reconnaîtrai que vous avez été miséricordieux envers mon seigneur Abraham.
45 While Y turnede in thouyte these thingis with me, Rebecca apperide, comynge with a pot which sche bare in the schuldre; and sche yede doun to the welle, and drowe watir. And Y seide to hir, Yyue thou a litil to me to drynke; and sche hastide,
J'avais à peine achevé ces mots dans mon cœur, qu'aussitôt Rébécca sortit, ayant une cruche sur son épaule; elle descendit à la fontaine, elle puisa, et je lui dis: Fais-moi boire.
46 and dide doun the pot of the schuldre, and seide to me, And thou drynke, and Y schal yyue drynke to thi camels; Y drank, and watride the camels.
Et, s'étant hâtée, elle descendit la cruche sur son bras, en disant: Bois, puis je ferai boire tes chamelles; et je bus, et elle fit boire mes chamelles.
47 And Y axide hir, and seide, Whos douytir art thou? Which answerde, Y am the douytir of Batuel, sone of Nachor, whom Melcha childide to him. And so Y hangide eere ryngis to ourne hir face, and Y puttide bies of the arm in hir hondis,
Je l'interrogeai ensuite, et lui dis: De qui es-tu fille? apprends-le- moi. Je suis, répondit-elle, fille de Bathuel, fils de Nachor, que lui a enfanté Melcha. Et je lui mis les boucles d'oreilles, et je mis à ses bras les bracelets.
48 and lowliche Y worschipide the Lord, and Y blessid the Lord God of my lord Abraham, which God ledde me bi riyt weie, that Y schulde take the douytir of the brothir of my lord to his sone.
Et, rendant grâces, j'adorai le Seigneur; je bénis le Seigneur Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, qui m'avait heureusement dirigé dans la véritable voie, afin que je prisse, pour son fils, la fille du frère de mon seigneur;
49 Wherfor if ye don mercy and treuthe with `my lord, schewe ye to me; ellis if othir thing plesith, also seie ye this, that Y go to the riyt side ethir to the left side.
Si donc vous voulez traiter mon seigneur selon la miséricorde et la justice, dites-le-moi; sinon, congédiez-moi, afin que je rebrousse chemin, à droite ou à gauche.
50 Laban and Batuel answeriden, The word is gon out of the Lord; we moun not speke ony other thing with thee without his plesaunce.
Laban et Bathuel répondirent: C'est du Seigneur que vient la chose, nous ne pouvons t'objecter ni bien ni mal.
51 Lo! Rebecca is bifore thee; take thou hir, and go forth, and be sche wijf of the sone of thi lord, as the Lord spak.
Voici devant toi Rébécca; prends-la, pars, et qu'elle soit la femme du fils de ton seigneur, selon ce que le Seigneur a dit.
52 And whanne the child of Abraham hadde herd this, he felde doun, and worschipide the Lord in erthe.
En entendant leurs paroles, le serviteur d'Abraham se prosterna la face contre terre devant le Seigneur.
53 And whanne vessels of siluer, and of gold, and clothis weren brouyt forth, he yaf tho to Rebecca for yifte, and he yaf yiftis to hir britheren, and modir.
Puis, le serviteur ayant montré des joyaux d'argent et d'or ainsi que des vêtements, les donna à Rébécca; il fit aussi des présents à son frère et à sa mère.
54 And whanne a feeste was maad, thei eeten and drunken to gider, and dwelliden there. Forsothe the child roos eerli, and spak, Delyuere ye me, that Y go to my lord.
Ils mangèrent alors et ils burent, lui et les hommes de sa suite, ensuite ils se couchèrent. Et, s'étant levé de grand matin, le serviteur dit: Congédiez-moi, afin que je retourne auprès de mon seigneur.
55 Hir britheren and modir answerden, The damesele dwelle nameli ten daies at vs, and aftirward sche schal go forth.
Les frères et la mère de la vierge dirent: Que la jeune fille reste avec nous dix jours encore, et ensuite elle partira.
56 The child seide, Nyle ye holde me, for the Lord hath dressid my weie; delyuere ye me, that I go to my lord.
Mais il leur dit: Ne me retenez pas; le Seigneur m'a heureusement préparé la voie; congédiez-moi afin que je retourne auprès de mon seigneur.
57 And thei seiden, Clepe we the damysele, and axe we hir wille.
Ils repartirent: Appelons l'enfant, interrogeons ses lèvres.
58 And whanne sche was clepid, and cam, thei axiden, Wolt thou go with this man?
Et ils appelèrent Rébécca, et ils lui dirent: Partiras-tu avec cet homme? Je partirai, répondit-elle.
59 And sche seide, Y schal go. Therfor they delyueriden hir, and hir nurse, and the seruaunt of Abraham, and hise felowis, and wischiden prosperitees to her sister,
Ils congédièrent donc Rébécca leur sœur avec ce qui lui appartenait, ainsi que le serviteur d'Abraham et les hommes de sa suite.
60 and seiden, Thou art oure sister, encreesse thou in to a thousand thousandis, and thi seed gete the yatis of hise enemyes.
Ils bénirent Rébécca, et ils lui dirent: Tu es notre sœur; sois mère de milliers de myriades, et que ta race possède les villes de ses ennemis.
61 Therfor Rebecca and hir damesels stieden on the camels, and sueden the man, which turnede ayen hasteli to his lord.
Ensuite Rébécca s'étant levée avec ses servantes, elles montèrent sur les chamelles et elles partirent avec l'homme. Et le serviteur, prenant avec lui Rébécca, se remit en marche.
62 In that tyme Ysaac walkide bi the weie that ledith to the pit, whos name is of hym that lyueth and seeth; for he dwellide in the south lond.
Or, Isaac se promenait alors dans le désert, vers le puits de la Vision, car il habitait en la terre qui est au midi.
63 And he yede out to thenke in the feeld, for the dai was `bowid thanne; and whanne he hadde reisid the iyen, he seiy camels comynge afer.
C'était le soir; Isaac était sorti dans la plaine pour se distraire, et, ayant levé les yeux, il vit les chamelles qui arrivaient.
64 And whanne Ysaac was seyn, Rebecca liyte doun of the camel,
Rébécca, ayant aussi levé les yeux, aperçut Isaac aussitôt elle descendit de sa chamelle
65 and seide to the child, Who is that man that cometh bi the feeld in to the metyng of vs? And the child seide to hir, He is my lord. And sche took soone a mentil, and hilide hir.
Et dit au serviteur: Quel est cet homme qui marche dans la plaine à notre rencontre? Le serviteur répondit: C'est mon seigneur. Ayant donc pris son grand voile: elle s'en enveloppa.
66 Forsothe the seruaunt tolde to his lord Ysaac alle thingis whiche he hadde do;
Le serviteur raconta à Isaac toutes les choses qu'il avait faites.
67 which Ysaac ledde hir in to the tabernacle of Sare, his modir, and took hir to wijf; and so myche he louede hir, that he temperide the sorewe which bifelde of the deeth of the modir.
Entré en la demeure de sa mère, Isaac prit Rébécca pour sa femme et il la chérit; et il fut consolé au sujet de Sarra, sa mère.
