Genesis 20
1 Abraham yede forth fro thennus in to the lond of the south, and dwellide bitwixe Cades and Sur, and was a pilgrym in Geraris;
Abraham partit de là pour la contrée du Midi; il s’établit entre Cadès et Sur, et fit un séjour à Gérare.
2 and he seide of Sare, his wijf, Sche is my sistir. Therfor Abymalec, kyng of Gerare, sente, and took hir.
Abraham disait de Sara, sa femme: « C’est ma sœur. » Abimélech, roi de Gérare, envoya prendre Sara.
3 Sotheli God cam to Abymalec bi a sweuene in the nyyt, and seide to hym, Lo! thou schalt die, for the wooman which thou hast take, for sche hath an hosebond.
Mais Dieu vint à Abimélech en songe pendant la nuit, et lui dit: « Voici, tu vas mourir à cause de la femme que tu as prise: car elle a un mari. »
4 Forsothe Abymalech touchide not hir; and he seide, Lord, whether thou schalt sle folc vnkunnynge and iust?
Or Abimélech ne s’était pas approché d’elle; il répondit: « Seigneur, ferez-vous mourir des gens même innocents?
5 Whether he seide not to me, Sche is my sistir, and sche seide, He is my brother? In the symplenesse of myn herte, and in the clennesse of myn hondis Y dide this.
Ne m’a-t-il pas dit: C’est ma sœur? Et elle-même m’a dit aussi: C’est mon frère. C’est avec un cœur intègre et des mains pures que j’ai fait cela. »
6 And the Lord seide to hym, And Y woot that thou didist bi symple herte, and therfor Y kepte thee, lest thou didist synne ayens me, and I suffride not that thou touchidist hir;
Dieu lui dit en songe: « Moi aussi, je sais que c’est avec un cœur intègre que tu as agi; aussi t’ai-je retenu de pécher contre moi. C’est pourquoi je n’ai pas permis que tu la touches.
7 now therfor yelde thou the wijf to hir hosebonde, for he is a profete; and he schal preye for thee, and thou schalt lyue; sotheli if thou nylte yelde, wite thou that thou schalt die bi deeth, thou and alle thingis that ben thine.
Maintenant, rends la femme de cet homme, car il est prophète; il priera pour toi, et tu vivras. Si tu ne la rends pas, sache que tu mourras certainement, toi et tous ceux qui t’appartiennent. »
8 And anoon Abynalech roos bi nyyt, and clepide alle his seruauntis, and spak alle these wordis in the eeris of hem; and alle men dredden greetli.
Abimélech se leva de bon matin, appela tous ses serviteurs et leur rapporta toutes ces choses; et ces gens furent saisis d’une grande frayeur.
9 Sotheli Abymalec clepide also Abraham, and seide to hym, What hast thou do to vs? what synneden we ayens thee, for thou hast brouyt in on me and on my rewme a greuouse synne? thou hast do to vs whiche thingis thou ouytist not do.
Puis Abimélech appela Abraham et lui dit: « Qu’est-ce que tu nous as fait? En quoi ai-je manqué à ton égard, que tu aies fait venir sur moi et sur mon royaume un si grand péché? Tu as fait avec moi des choses qui ne se font pas. »
10 And eft Abimalech axide, and seide, What thing seiyist thou, that thou woldist do this?
Abimélech dit encore à Abraham: « À quoi as-tu pensé en agissant de la sorte? »
11 Abraham answerde, Y thouyte with me, and seide, in hap the drede of God is not in this place; and thei schulen sle me for my wijf;
Abraham répondit: « Je me disais: Il n’y a sans doute aucune crainte de Dieu dans ce pays, et l’on me tuera à cause de ma femme.
12 in other maner forsothe and sche is my sister verili, the douyter of my fadir, and not the douyter of my moder; and Y weddide hir in to wijf;
Et d’ailleurs elle est vraiment ma sœur; elle est fille de mon père, quoiqu’elle ne soit pas fille de ma mère, et elle est devenue ma femme.
13 sotheli aftir that God ladde me out of the hous of my fadir, Y seide to hir, Thou schalt do this mercy with me in ech place to which we schulen entre; thou schalt seie, that Y am thi brother.
Lorsque Dieu me fit errer loin de la maison de mon père, je dis à Sara: Voici la grâce que tu me feras: dans tous les lieux où nous arriverons, dis de moi: C’est mon frère. »
14 Therfore Abymelech took scheep, and oxun, and seruauntis, and handmaydenes, and yaf to Abraham; and he yeldide to him Sare, `his wijf, and seide, The lond is bifor you;
Alors Abimélech prit des brebis et des bœufs, des serviteurs et des servantes, et les donna à Abraham; et il lui rendit Sara, sa femme.
15 dwelle thou, where euere it plesith thee. Forsothe Abymelech seide to Sare, Lo!
Abimélech dit: « Voici, mon pays est devant toi; habite où il te plaira. »
16 Y yaf a thousand platis of siluer to thi brother; this schal be to thee in to hiling of iyen to al men that ben with thee; and whider euere thou goist, haue thou mynde that thou art takun.
Et il dit à Sara: « Je donne à ton frère mille pièces d’argent; cela te sera un voile sur les yeux pour tous ceux qui sont avec toi et pour tous; te voilà justifiée. »
17 Sotheli for Abraham preiede, God curide Abymelech, and his wijf, and handmaydens, and thei childiden;
Abraham intercéda auprès de Dieu, et Dieu guérit Abimélech, sa femme et ses servantes, et ils eurent des enfants.
18 for God hadde closid ech wombe of the hows of Abymelech, for Sare, the wijf of Abraham.
Car Yahweh avait rendu tout sein stérile dans la maison d’Abimélech, à cause de Sara, femme d’Abraham.
