Genesis 18
1 Forsothe in the valei of Mambre the Lord apperide to Abraham, sittynge in the dore of his tabernacle, in thilke heete of the dai.
Éternel se révéla à lui dans les plaines de Mamré, tandis qu’il était assis à l’entrée de sa tente, pendant la chaleur du jour.
2 And whanne he hadde reisid his iyen, thre men apperiden to hym, and stoden nyy hym. And whanne he hadde seyn hem, he ran fro the dore of his tabernacle in to the meting of hem, and he worschipide on erthe,
Comme il levait les yeux et regardait, il vit trois personnages debout prés de lui. En les voyant, il courut à eux du seuil de la tente et se prosterna contre terre.
3 and seide, Lord, if Y haue founde grace in thin iyen, passe thou not thi seruaunt,
Et il dit: "Seigneur, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ne passe pas ainsi devant ton serviteur!
4 but I schal brynge a litil watir, and youre feet be waischid, and reste ye vndur the tre;
Qu’on aille quérir un peu d’eau; lavez vos pieds et reposez-vous sous cet arbre.
5 and Y schal sette a mussel of breed, and youre herte be coumfortid; aftirward ye schulen passe; for herfor ye bowiden to youre seruaunt. Whiche seiden, Do thou as thou hast spoke.
Je vais apporter une tranche de pain, vous réparerez vos forces, puis vous poursuivrez votre chemin, puisque aussi bien vous avez passé près de votre serviteur." Ils répondirent: "Fais ainsi que tu as dit".
6 Abraham hastide in to the tabernacle, to Sare, and seide to hir, Hast thou, meddle thou thre half buschelis of clene flour; and make thou looues bakun vndur aischis.
Abraham rentra en hâte dans sa tente, vers Sara et dit: "Vite, prends trois mesures de farine de pur froment, pétris-la et fais-en des gâteaux."
7 Forsothe he ran to the droue of beestis, and took therof a calf moost tendre and best, and yaf to a child, which hastide, and sethede the calfe;
Puis, Abraham courut au troupeau, choisit un veau tendre et gras et le donna au serviteur, qui se hâta de l’accommoder.
8 and he took botere, and mylk, and the calf which he hadde sode, and settide bifore hem; forsothe Abraham stood bisidis hem vndur the tre.
Il prit de la crème et du lait, puis le veau qu’on avait préparé et le leur servit: il se tenait devant eux, sous l’arbre, tandis qu’ils mangeaient.
9 And whanne thei hadden ete, thei seiden to hym, Where is Sare thi wijf? He answerde, Lo! sche is in the tabernacle.
Ils lui dirent: "Où est Sara, ta femme?" Il répondit: "Elle est dans la tente."
10 To whom the Lord seide, Y schal turne ayen, and Y schal come to thee in this tyme, if Y lyue; and Sare, thi wijf, schal haue a sone. Whanne this was herd, Sare leiyede bihynde the dore of the tabernacle.
L’Un d’eux reprit: "Certes, je reviendrai à toi à pareille époque et voici, un fils sera né à Sara, ton épouse." Or, Sara l’entendait à l’entrée de la tente qui se trouvait derrière lui.
11 Forsothe bothe weren olde, and of greet age, and wommans termes ceessiden to be maad to Sare.
Abraham et Sara étaient vieux, avancés dans la vie; le tribut périodique des femmes avait cessé pour Sara.
12 And she leiyede, seiynge pryueli, after that Y wexede eld, and my lord is eld, schal Y yyue diligence to lust?
Sara rit en elle-même disant: "Flétrie par l’âge, ce bonheur me serait réservé! Et mon époux est un vieillard!"
13 Forsothe the Lord seide to Abraham, Whi leiyeth Sare, thi wijf, seiynge, whether Y an eld womman schal bere child verili?
Le Seigneur dit à Abraham: "Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri, disant: ‘Eh quoi! en vérité, j’enfanterais, âgée que je suis!’
14 whether ony thing is hard to God? Bi the biheeste Y schal turne ayen to thee in this same tyme, if Y lyue; and Sara schal haue a sone.
Est-il rien d’impossible au Seigneur? Au temps fixé, à pareille époque, je te visiterai et Sara sera mère".
15 Sare was aferd for drede, and denyede, seiynge, Y leiyede not. Forsothe the Lord seide, It is not so, but thou leiyedist.
Sara protesta, en disant: "Je n’ai point ri"; car elle avait peur. II répondit "Non pas, tu as ri."
16 Therfor whanne the men hadden risen fro thennus, thei dressiden the iyen ayens Sodom; and Abraham yede to gidre, ledynge hem forth.
Les hommes se levèrent et fixèrent leurs regards dans la direction de Sodome; Abraham les accompagna pour les reconduire.
17 And the Lord seide, Wher Y mowe hele fro Abraham what thingis Y schal do,
Or, l’Éternel avait dit: "Tairai-je à Abraham ce que je veux faire?"
18 sithen he schal be in to a greet folk and moost strong, and alle naciouns of erthe schulen be blessid in hym?
Abraham ne doit-il pas devenir une nation grande et puissante et une cause de bonheur pour toutes les nations de la terre?
19 For Y woot that Abraham schal comaunde hise children, and his hows after hym, that thei kepe the weie of the Lord, and that thei do riytfulnesse and dom, that the Lord bringe for Abraham alle thingis whiche he spak to Abraham.
Si je l’ai distingué, c’est pour qu’il prescrive à ses fils et à sa maison après lui d’observer la voie de l’Éternel, en pratiquant la vertu et la justice; afin que l’Éternel accomplisse sur Abraham ce qu’il a déclaré à son égard."
20 And so the Lord seide, The cry of men of Sodom and of men of Gomorre is multiplied, and her synne is agreggid greetli; Y schal come doun,
L’Éternel dit: "Comme le décri de Sodome et de Gommorrhe est grand; comme leur perversité est excessive,
21 and schal se whether thei han fillid in werk the cry that cam to me, that Y wite whether it is not so.
je veux y descendre; je veux voir si, comme la plainte en est venue jusqu’à moi, ils se sont livrés aux derniers excès; si cela n’est pas, j’aviserai."
22 And thei turneden han fro thennus, and yeden to Sodom. Abraham sotheli stood yit bifore the Lord,
Les hommes quittèrent ce lieu et s’acheminèrent vers Sodome; Abraham était encore en présence du Seigneur.
23 and neiyede, and seide, Whether thou schalt leese a iust man with the wickid man?
Abraham s’avança et dit: "Anéantirais-tu, d’un même coup, l’innocent avec le coupable?
24 if fifti iust men ben in the citee, schulen thei perische togidere, and schalt thou not spare that place for fifti iust men, if thei ben ther ynne?
Peut-être y a-t-il cinquante justes dans cette ville: les feras-tu périr aussi et ne pardonneras-tu pas à la contrée en faveur des cinquante justes qui s’y trouvent?
25 Fer be it fro thee that thou do this thing, and sle a iust man with a wickid man, and that a iust man be maad as a wickid man; this is not thin that demest al erthe; thou schalt not make this doom.
Loin de toi d’agir ainsi, de frapper l’innocent avec le coupable, les traitant tous deux de même façon! Loin de toi! Celui qui juge toute la terre serait-il un juge inique?"
26 And the Lord seide to him, If Y schal fynde in Sodom fifti iust men in the myddis of the citee, Y schal foryyue to al the place for hem.
Le Seigneur répondit: "Si je trouve à Sodome au sein de la ville, cinquante justes, je pardonnerai à toute la contrée à cause d’eux"
27 Abraham answerde and seide, For Y bigan onys, Y schal speke to my Lord, sithen Y am dust and aische;
Abraham reprit en disant: "De grâce! j’ai entrepris de parler à mon souverain, moi poussière et cendre!
28 what if lesse than fifti iust men bi fyue ben, schalt thou do a wey al the cite for fyue and fourti? And the Lord seide, Y schal not do a wei, if I schal fynde fyue and fourti there.
Peut-être à ces cinquante justes, en manquera-t-il cinq: détruirais-tu, pour cinq, une ville entière?" Il répondit: "Je ne sévirai point, si j’en trouve quarante-cinq"
29 And eft Abraham seide to hym, But if fourti ben there, what schalt thou do? The Lord seide, Y schal not smyte for fourti.
Il insista encore, en lui disant: "Peut-être s’y en trouvera-t-il quarante?" II répondit: "Je m’abstiendrai à cause de ces quarante."
30 Abraham seide, Lord, Y biseche, take thou not to indignacioun, if Y speke; what if thretti be foundun there? The Lord answerde, Y schal not do, if Y schal fynde thretti there.
Il dit: "De grâce, que mon Souverain ne s’irrite point de mes paroles! Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il trente?" II répondit: "Je m’abstiendrai, si j’en trouve trente"
31 Abraham seide, For Y bigan onys, Y schal speke to my Lord; what if twenti be foundun there? The Lord seide, Y schal not sle for twenti.
II reprit: "De grâce, puisque j’ai osé parler à mon Souverain, peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il vingt?" II répondit: "Je renoncerai à détruire, en faveur de ces vingt." II dit:
32 Abraham seide, Lord, Y biseche, be thou not wrooth, if Y speke yit onys; what if ten be founden there? The Lord seide, Y schal not do a wey for ten.
"De grâce, que mon Souverain ne s’irrite pas, je ne parlerai plus que cette fois. Peut-être s’en trouvera-t-il dix?" II répondit: "Je renoncerai à détruire, en faveur de ces dix."
33 The Lord yede forth, after that he ceesside to speke to Abraham, and Abraham turnede ayen in to his place.
Le Seigneur disparut, lorsqu’il eut achevé de parler à Abraham; et Abraham retourna à sa demeure.
