Exodus 1
1 These ben the names of the sones of Israel, that entriden into Egipt with Jacob; alle entriden with her housis;
Or ce sont ici les noms des enfants d'Israël, qui entrèrent en Egypte, chacun desquels y entra avec Jacob, et leur famille.
2 Ruben, Symeon,
Ruben, Siméon, Lévi, et Juda,
3 Leuy, Judas, Isachar, Zabulon, and Benjamin,
Issachar, Zabulon, et Benjamin,
4 Dan, and Neptalim, Gad, and Aser.
Dan, et Nephtali, Gad, et Aser.
5 Therfor alle the soules of hem that yeden out of `the hipe of Jacob weren seuenti and fyue.
Toutes les personnes issues de la hanche de Jacob, étaient soixante et dix, avec Joseph [qui] était en Egypte.
6 Forsothe Joseph was in Egipt; and whanne he was deed, and alle hise brithren, and al his kynrede,
Or Joseph mourut, et tous ses frères, et toute cette génération-là.
7 the sones of Israel encreessiden, and weren multiplied as buriounnyng, and thei weren maad strong greetli, and filliden the lond.
Et les enfants d'Israël foisonnèrent, et crûrent en très-grande abondance, et multiplièrent, et devinrent très-puissants, tellement que le pays en fut rempli.
8 A newe kyng, that knewe not Joseph, roos in the meene tyme on Egipt, and seide to his puple, Lo!
Depuis il s'éleva un nouveau Roi sur l'Egypte, lequel n'avait point connu Joseph.
9 the puple of the sones of Israel is myche, and strongere than we;
Et il dit à son peuple: voici, le peuple des enfants d'Israël est plus grand et plus puissant que nous.
10 come ye, wiseli oppresse we it, lest perauenture it be multiplied; and lest, if batel risith ayens vs, it be addid to oure enemyes, and go out of the lond, whanne we ben ouercomun.
Agissons donc prudemment avec lui, de peur qu'il ne se multiplie, et que s'il arrivait quelque guerre il ne se joignît à nos ennemis, et ne fît la guerre contre nous, et qu'il ne s'en allât du pays.
11 And so he made maistris of werkis souereyns to hem, that thei schulden turmente hem with chargis. And thei maden citees of tabernaclis to Farao, Fiton, and Ramesses.
Ils établirent donc sur le peuple des Commissaires d'impôts pour l'affliger en le surchargeant; car le [peuple] bâtit des villes fortes à Pharaon, [savoir] Pithom et Rahamsès.
12 And bi hou myche thei oppressiden hem, bi so myche thei weren multiplied, and encreessiden more.
Mais plus ils l'affligeaient, et plus il multipliait, et croissait en toute abondance: c'est pourquoi ils haïssaient les enfants d'Israël.
13 And Egipcians hatiden the sones of Israel, and turmentiden, and scorneden hem;
Et les Egyptiens faisaient servir les enfants d'Israël avec rigueur:
14 and brouyten her lijf to bitternesse bi hard werkis of cley and to tijl stoon, and bi al seruage, bi which thei weren oppressid in the werkis of erthe.
Tellement qu'ils leur rendirent la vie amère par une rude servitude, [en les employant] à faire du mortier, des briques, et toute sorte d'ouvrage qui se fait aux champs; tout le service qu'on tirait d'eux [était] avec rigueur.
15 Forsothe the kyng of Egipt seide to the mydwyues of Ebrews, of whiche oon was clepid Sefora, the tother Fua;
Le Roi d'Egypte commanda aussi aux sages-femmes Hébreues, dont l'une avait nom Siphra, et l'autre avait nom Puha;
16 and he commaundide to hem, Whanne ye schulen do the office of medewyues to Ebrew wymmen, and the tyme of childberyng schal come, if it is a knaue child, sle ye him; if it is a womman, kepe ye.
Et leur dit: quand vous recevrez les enfants des femmes des Hébreux, et que vous les verrez sur les siéges, si c'est un fils, mettez-le à mort; mais si c'est une fille, qu'elle vive.
17 Forsothe the medewyues dredden God, and diden not bi the comaundement of the kyng of Egipt, but kepten knaue children.
Mais les sages-femmes craignirent Dieu, et ne firent pas ainsi que le Roi d'Egypte leur avait dit; car elles laissèrent vivre les fils.
18 To whiche clepid to hym the kyng seide, What is this thing which ye wolden do, that ye wolden kepe the children?
Alors le Roi d'Egypte appela les sages-femmes, et leur dit: pourquoi avez-vous fait cela, d'avoir laissé vivre les fils?
19 Whiche answeriden, Ebrew wymmen ben not as the wymmen of Egipt, for thei han kunnyng of the craft of medewijf, and childen bifore that we comen to hem.
Et les sages-femmes répondirent à Pharaon: parce que les Hébreues ne sont point comme les femmes Egyptiennes; car elles sont vigoureuses, [et] elles ont accouché avant que la sage-femme soit arrivée chez elle.
20 Therfor God dide wel to medewyues; and the puple encreesside, and was coumfortid greetli.
Et Dieu fit du bien aux sages-femmes, et le peuple multiplia, et devint très puissant.
21 And for the mydewyues dredden God, he bildide `housis to hem.
Et parce que les sages-femmes craignirent Dieu, il leur édifia des maisons.
22 Therfor Farao comaundide al his puple, and seide, What euer thing of male kynde is borun to Ebrewis, `caste ye into the flood; what euer thing of wymmen kynde, kepe ye.
Alors Pharaon commanda à tout son peuple, disant: jetez dans le fleuve tous les fils qui naîtront, mais laissez vivre toutes les filles.
