Exodus 32
1 Forsothe the puple siy, that Moises made tariyng to come doun fro the hil, and it was gaderid ayens Aaron, and seide, Rise thou, and make goddis to vs, that schulen go bifore vs, for we witen not what bifelde to this Moises, that ladde vs out of the lond of Egipt.
Et le peuple, voyant que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne, se rassembla autour d'Aaron et lui dit: Allons! fais-nous un Dieu qui marche devant nous, car nous ne savons ce qu'est devenu ce Moïse, l'homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte.
2 And Aaron seide to hem, Take ye the goldun eere ryngis fro the eeris of youre wyues, and of sones and douytris, and brynge ye to me.
Et Aaron leur dit: Enlevez les anneaux d'or qui sont aux oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi.
3 The puple dide tho thingis, that he comaundide, and brouyte eere ryngis to Aaron;
Et tous ils s'ôtèrent les anneaux d'or qu'ils avaient aux oreilles et les apportèrent à Aaron.
4 and whanne he hadde take tho, he formede bi `werk of yetyng, and made of tho a yotun calf. And thei seiden, Israel, these ben thi goddis, that ladde thee out of the lond of Egipt.
Alors Aaron les ayant reçus de leurs mains, les jeta au moule dans l'atelier et il en fit un veau de fonte; alors ils dirent: Israël, voilà ton Dieu qui t'a tiré du pays d'Egypte.
5 And whanne Aaron had seyn this thing, he bildide an auter bifore hym, and he criede bi the vois of a criere, and seide, To morewe is the solempnete of the Lord.
Et Aaron voyant cela dressa un autel devant lui et fit publier: Demain c'est fête en l'honneur de l'Éternel.
6 And thei rysen eerli, and offeriden brent sacrifyces, and pesible sacrifices; and the puple sat to ete and drynke, and thei risen to pley.
Et à leur lever le lendemain, ils sacrifièrent des holocaustes et ils offrirent des sacrifices pacifiques; et le peuple s'assit pour manger et boire, puis ils se mirent à danser.
7 Forsothe the Lord spak to Moises, and seide, Go thou, go doun, thi puple hath synned, `whom thou leddist out of the lond of Egipt.
Alors l'Éternel parla à Moïse: Va, descends, car il forfait ton peuple que tu as tiré du pays d'Egypte:
8 Thei yeden awei soone fro the weie which thou schewidst to hem, and thei maden to hem a yotun calf, and worschipyden it, and thei offeriden sacrifices to it, and seiden, Israel, these ben thi goddis, that ledden thee out of the lond of Egipt.
ils se sont promptement écartés de la voie que je leur ai prescrite: ils se sont fabriqué un veau de fonte et l'ont adoré, et lui ont fait des sacrifices et ont dit: Israël, c'est là ton Dieu qui t'a tiré du pays d'Egypte.
9 And eft the Lord seide to Moises, Y se, that this puple is of hard nol;
Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Je regarde ce peuple, et voici, c'est un peuple au col roide;
10 suffre thou me, that my woodnesse be wrooth ayens hem, and that Y do awey hem; and Y schal make thee in to a greet folk.
or maintenant donc laisse-moi agir; il faut que ma colère s'allume contre eux et que je les détruise, mais de toi je ferai une grande nation.
11 Forsothe Moises preiede `his Lord God, and seide, Lord, whi is thi veniaunce wrooth ayens thi puple, whom thou leddist out of the lond of Egipt in greet strengthe and in stronge hond?
Et Moïse chercha à apaiser l'Éternel, son Dieu, et dit: Éternel, pourquoi ta colère s'allumerait-elle contre ton peuple que tu as tiré du pays d'Egypte par une grande force et d'une main puissante?
12 Y biseche, that Egipcians seie not, he ledde hem out felli, `that he schulde sle in the hillis, and to do awei fro erthe, thin ire ceesse, and be thou quemeful on the wickidnesse of thi puple.
Pourquoi les Égyptiens diraient-ils: C'est pour leur perte qu'il les a fait partir, afin de les tuer dans les montagnes et de les exterminer de la face de la terre? Reviens de ton courroux qui s'enflamme, et repens-toi de la menace que tu as faite à ton peuple.
13 Haue thou mynde of Abraham, of Ysaac, and of Israel, thi seruauntis, to whiche thou hast swore bi thi silf, and seidist, Y schal multiplie youre seed as the sterris of heuene, and Y schal yyue to youre seed al this lond of which Y spak, and ye schulen welde it euere.
Souviens-toi d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël, tes serviteurs, auxquels tu as juré par toi-même et auxquels tu as dit: Je multiplierai votre postérité comme les étoiles du ciel, et tout ce pays que j'ai promis, je le donnerai à vos descendants en propriété éternelle.
14 And the Lord was plesid, that he dide not the yuel which he spak ayens his puple.
Alors l'Éternel se repentit de la menace qu'il avait dit vouloir exécuter sur son peuple.
15 And Moises turnede ayen fro the hil, and bar in his hond twei tablis of witnessyng, writun in euer either side,
Et Moïse se tourna et descendit de la montagne, portant à la main les Deux Tables du Témoignage, tables écrites des deux côtés; elles étaient écrites aussi bien d'un côté que de l'autre.
16 and maad bi the werk of God; and the writyng of God was grauun in tablis.
Et les tables étaient l'ouvrage de Dieu, et l'écriture était l'écriture de Dieu gravée sur les tables.
17 Forsothe Josue herde the noise of the puple criynge, and seide to Moyses, Yellyng of fiytyng is herd in the castels.
Alors Josué entendit les cris du peuple qui vociférait, et dit à Moïse: C'est le cri de guerre dans le camp.
18 To whom Moises answeride, It is not cry of men exitynge to batel, nether the cry of men compellynge to fleyng, but Y here the vois of syngeris.
Et Moïse répondit: Ce ne sont ni les cris de gens qui chantent victoire, ni les cris de gens qui déplorent une défaite; j'entends les voix de gens qui chantent.
19 And whanne he hadde neiyid to the castels, he siy the calf, and dauncis; and he was wrooth greetli, and `castide forth the tablis fro the hond, and brak tho at the rootis of the hil.
Et lorsqu'il fut près du camp et qu'il aperçut le veau et les chœurs, Moïse fut enflammé de colère et il jeta d'entre ses mains les tables et les brisa au pied de la montagne.
20 And he took the calf, which thei hadden maad, and brente, and brak `til to poudur, which he spreynte in to watir, and yaf therof drynke to the sones of Israel.
Puis il prit le veau qu'ils avaient fait et le brûla au feu, et le broya jusqu'à le réduire en une poudre, qu'il répandit sur l'eau qu'il fit boire aux enfants d'Israël.
21 And Moises seide to Aaron, What dide this puple to thee, that thou brouytist in on hym the gretteste synne?
Et Moïse dit à Aaron: Que t'a fait ce peuple pour le charger d'un grand péché?
22 To whom he answeride, My lord, be not wrooth, for thou knowist this puple, that it is enclynaunt to yuel;
Et Aaron dit: Que la colère de mon seigneur ne s'allume pas! Tu connais ce peuple et sa perversité;
23 thei seiden to me, Make thou goddis to vs, that schulen go bifore vs, for we witen not, what bifelde to this Moises, that ladde vs out of the lond of Egipt.
ils m'ont dit: Fais-nous un Dieu qui marche à notre tête; car ce Moïse, l'homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qu'il est devenu.
24 To whiche Y seide, Who of you hath gold? Thei token, and yauen to me, and Y castide it forth in to the fier, and this calf yede out.
C'est alors que je leur ai dit: Que tous ceux qui portent de l'or l'enlèvent. Et ils me l'ont remis, et je l'ai exposé au feu, et il en est résulté ce veau.
25 Therfor Moyses siy the puple, that it was maad bare; for Aaron hadde spuylid it for the schenschip of filthe, and hadde maad the puple nakid among enemyes.
Et lorsque Moïse vit que le peuple était sans frein, Aaron lui ayant lâché la bride, et deviendrait le jouet de ses ennemis,
26 And Moises stood in the yate of the castels, and seide, If ony man is of the Lord, be he ioyned to me; and alle the sones of Leuy weren gaderid to hym.
Moïse se plaça à la porte du camp et dit: A moi tous ceux qui sont à l'Éternel! Et tous les fils de Lévi se réunirent auprès de lui.
27 To whiche he seide, The Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, A man putte swerd on his hipe, go ye, and `go ye ayen fro yate `til to yate bi the myddil of the castels, and ech man sle his brother, freend, and neiybore.
Et il leur dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Mettez chacun l'épée au côté, passez et repassez d'une porte du camp à l'autre porte, et tuez chacun votre frère et chacun votre ami et chacun votre prochain.
28 The sones of Leuy diden bi the word of Moises, and as thre and twenti thousynd of men felden doun in that day.
Et les fils de Lévi exécutèrent l'ordre de Moïse, et en ce jour dans le peuple il tomba environ trois mille hommes.
29 And Moises seide, Ye han halewid youre hondis to dai to the Lord, ech man in his sone, and brother, that blessyng be youun to you.
Et Moïse dit: Accomplissez aujourd'hui votre consécration à l'Éternel, même au prix de votre fils et de votre frère, et cela pour attirer sur vous aujourd'hui une bénédiction.
30 Sotheli whanne `the tother day was maad, Moises spak to the puple, Ye han synned the moost synne; Y schal stie to the Lord, if in ony maner Y schal mowe biseche hym for youre felony.
Et le lendemain Moïse dit au peuple: Vous avez commis un grand péché; or je vais monter vers l'Éternel; peut-être pourrai-je expier votre péché.
31 And he turnede ayen to the Lord, and seide, Lord, Y biseche, this puple hath synned a greet synne, and thei han maad goldun goddis to hem; ethir foryyue thou this gilt to hem,
Moïse retourna donc auprès de l'Éternel et dit: Hélas! ce peuple s'est rendu coupable d'un grand péché, et ils se sont fait un dieu d'or.
32 ether if thou doist not, do awey me fro thi book, which thou hast write.
Puisses-tu maintenant pardonner leur péché! sinon, oh! efface-moi de ton livre écrit par toi.
33 To whom the Lord answeride, Y schal do awey fro my book hym that synneth ayens me;
Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Ce sont ceux qui ont péché contre moi que j'effacerai de mon livre,
34 forsothe go thou, and lede this puple, whydur Y spak to thee; myn aungel schal go bifore thee; forsothe in the day of veniaunce Y schal visite also this synne of hem.
va maintenant et mène le peuple où je t'ai dit: Voici, mon ange te précédera; mais au jour de mes châtiments je les châtierai de leur péché.
35 Therfor the Lord smoot the puple for the gilt of the calf, which calf Aaron made.
Ainsi l'Éternel frappa le peuple pour avoir fait le veau exécuté par Aaron.
