Exodus 21
1 These ben the domes, whiche thou schalt sette forth to hem.
Ce sont ici les lois que tu leur proposeras.
2 If thou biest an Ebrew seruaunt, he schal serue thee sixe yeer; in the seuenthe yeer he schal go out fre,
Si tu achètes un esclave Hébreu, il te servira six ans, et au septième il sortira pour être libre, sans rien payer.
3 with out prijs; with what maner clooth he entride, with siche clooth go he out; if he entride hauynge a wijf, and the wijf schal go out to gidere.
S'il est venu avec son corps [seulement], il sortira avec son corps; s'il avait une femme, sa femme sortira aussi avec lui.
4 But if the lord of the servaunt yaf a wijf to hym, and sche childide sones and douytris, the womman and hir children schulen be hir lordis; sotheli the seruaunt schal go out with his owne clooth.
Si son maître lui a donné une femme qui lui ait enfanté des fils, ou des filles, sa femme et les enfants qu'il en aura, seront à son maître, mais il sortira avec son corps.
5 That if the seruaunt seith, Y loue my lord, and wijf, and children, Y schal not go out fre;
Que si l'esclave dit positivement: j'aime mon maître, ma femme, et mes enfants, je ne sortirai point pour être libre.
6 the lord brynge hym to goddis, that is, iugis; and he schal be set to the dore, and postis; and the lord schal perse his eere with a nal, and he schal be seruaunt to hym til in to the world.
Alors son maître le fera venir devant les Juges, et le fera approcher de la porte, ou du poteau, et son maître lui percera l'oreille avec une alêne; et il le servira à toujours.
7 If ony man sillith his douyter in to seruauntesse, sche schal not go out as handmaidis weren wont to go out;
Si quelqu'un vend sa fille pour [être] esclave, elle ne sortira point comme les esclaves sortent.
8 if sche displesith in the iyen of hir lord, to whom sche was bitakun, he schal delyuere hir; sotheli he schal not haue power to sille hir to an alien puple, if he forsakith hir.
Si elle déplaît à son maître, qui ne l'aura point fiancée, il la fera acheter; mais il n'aura pas le pouvoir de la vendre à un peuple étranger, après qu'il lui aura été infidèle.
9 Forsothe if he weddith hir to his sonne, he schal do to hir `bi the custom of douytris;
Mais s'il l'a fiancée à son fils, il fera pour elle selon le droit des filles.
10 that if he takith another womman to hym, he schal puruey to the damysele weddingis, and clothis, and he schal not denye the prijs of chastite.
Que s'il en prend une autre pour lui, il ne retranchera rien de sa nourriture, de ses habits, et de l'amitié qui lui est due.
11 If he doith not these thre, sche schal go out freli without money.
S'il ne fait pas pour elle ces trois choses-là, elle sortira sans payer aucun argent.
12 He that smytith a man, and wole sle, die bi deeth;
Si quelqu'un frappe un homme, et qu'il en meure, on le fera mourir de mort.
13 forsothe if a man settide not aspies, but God `bitook hym in to hise hondis, Y schal ordeyne a place to thee, whidur he owith to fle.
Que s'il ne lui a point dressé d'embûche, mais que Dieu l'ait fait tomber entre ses mains, je t'établirai un lieu où il s'enfuira.
14 If ony man sleeth his neiybore bi biforecastyng, and bi aspies, drawe thou hym awey fro myn auter, that he die.
Mais si quelqu'un s'est élevé de propos délibéré contre son prochain, pour le tuer par finesse, tu le tireras de mon autel, afin qu'il meure.
15 He that smytith his fadir, ether modir, die by deeth.
Celui qui aura frappé son père, ou sa mère, sera puni de mort.
16 He that cursith his fadir, ether modir, die bi deeth.
Si quelqu'un dérobe un homme, et le vend, ou s'il est trouvé entre ses mains, on le fera mourir de mort.
17 He that stelith a man, and sillith hym, if he is conuyt of the gilt, die bi deeth.
Celui qui aura maudit son père, ou sa mère, sera puni de mort.
18 If men chiden, and the tother smyte his neiybore with a stoon, ether with the fist, and he is not deed, but liggith in the bed,
Si quelques-uns ont eu querelle, et que l'un ait frappé l'autre d'une pierre, ou du poing, dont il ne soit point mort, mais qu'il soit obligé de se mettre au lit;
19 if he risith, and goith forth on his staf, he that smoot schal be innocent; so netheles that he restore hise trauelis, and costis in lechis.
S'il se lève, et mArche dehors s'appuyant sur son bâton, celui qui l'aura frappé, sera absous; toutefois il le dédommagera de ce qu'il a chômé, et le fera guérir entièrement.
20 He that smytith his seruaunt, ether handmayde, with a yerde, and thei ben deed in hise hondis, schal be gilti of cryme.
Si quelqu'un a frappé du bâton son serviteur ou sa servante, et qu'il soit mort sous sa main, on ne manquera point d'en faire punition.
21 Sotheli if the seruaunt ouerlyueth o dai, ether tweyne, he schal not be suget to peyne, `that is of deeth, for the seruaunt is his catel.
Mais s'il survit un jour ou deux, on n'en fera point de punition, car c'est son argent.
22 If men chiden, and a man smytith a womman with childe, and sotheli makith the child deed borun, but the womman ouerlyueth, he schal be suget to the harm, as myche as the `hosebonde of the womman axith, and the iugis demen.
Si des hommes se querellent, et que l'un d'eux frappe une femme enceinte, et qu'elle en accouche, s'il n'y a pas cas de mort, il sera condamné à l'amende telle que le mari de la femme la lui imposera, et il la donnera selon que les Juges en ordonneront.
23 But if the deeth of hir sueth,
Mais s'il y a cas de mort, tu donneras vie pour vie,
24 he schal yelde lijf for lijf, iye for iye, tooth for tooth, hond for hond, foot for foot,
Œil pour œil, dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied,
25 brennyng for brennyng, wounde `with schedyng of blood for wounde `with schedyng of blood, `a wan wounde for a wan wounde.
Brûlure pour brûlure, plaie pour plaie, meurtrissure pour meurtrissure.
26 If a man smytith the iye of his seruaunt, ethir of handmaide, and makith hem oon iyed, he schal delyuere hem fre for `the iye which he puttide out.
Si quelqu'un frappe l'œil de son serviteur, ou l'œil de sa servante, et lui gâte l'œil, il le laissera aller libre pour son œil;
27 Also if he smytith out a tooth fro his seruaunt, ethir handmaide, in lijk maner he schal delyuere hem fre.
Et s'il fait tomber une dent à son serviteur, ou à sa servante, il le laissera aller libre pour sa dent.
28 If an oxe smytith with horn a man, ether a womman, and thei ben deed, the oxe schal be oppressid with stoonus, and hise fleischis schulen not be etun, and the lord of the oxe schal be innocent.
Si un bœuf heurte de sa corne un homme ou une femme, et que [la personne] en meure, le bœuf sera lapidé sans nulle exception, et on ne mangera point de sa chair, mais le maître du bœuf sera absous.
29 That if the oxe was `a pultere with horn fro yisterdai and the thridde dai ago, and men warneden `the lord of hym, nether the lord closide hym, and he sleeth a man, ethir womman, bothe the oxe schal be oppressid with stoonus, and thei schulen sle `the lord of hym;
Que si le bœuf avait auparavant accoutumé de heurter de sa corne, et que son maître en eût été averti avec protestation, et qu'il ne l'eût point renfermé, s'il tue un homme ou une femme, le bœuf sera lapidé, et on fera aussi mourir son maître.
30 that if prijs is put to the lord, he schal yyue for his lijf what euer he is axide.
Que si on lui impose un prix pour se racheter, il donnera la rançon de sa vie, selon tout ce qui lui sera imposé.
31 And if he smytith with horn a son, and a douytir, he schal be suget to lijk sentence.
Si le bœuf heurte de sa corne un fils ou une fille, il lui sera fait selon cette même loi.
32 If the oxe asailith a seruaunt, and handmaide, the lord of the oxe schal yyue thretti siclis of siluer to `his lord; forsothe the oxe schal be oppressid with stoonus.
Si le bœuf heurte de sa corne un esclave, soit homme, soit femme, [celui à qui est le bœuf] donnera trente sicles d'argent au maître de l'esclave, et le bœuf sera lapidé.
33 If ony man openeth a cisterne, and diggith, and hilith it not, and an oxe ether asse fallith in to it,
Si quelqu'un découvre une fosse, ou si quelqu'un creuse une fosse, et ne la couvre point, et qu'il y tombe un bœuf ou un âne,
34 the lord of the cisterne schal yelde the prijs of the werk beestis; forsothe that that is deed schal be his.
Le maître de la fosse donnera satisfaction, [et] rendra l'argent au maître [du bœuf], mais la bête morte lui appartiendra.
35 If another mannus oxe woundith the oxe of another man, and he is deed, thei schulen sille the quyke oxe, and thei schulen departe the prijs; forsothe thei schulen departe bitwixe hem the karkeis of the deed oxe.
Et si le bœuf de quelqu'un blesse le bœuf de son prochain, et qu'il en meure, ils vendront le bœuf vivant, et en partageront l'argent par moitié, et ils partageront aussi par moitié le bœuf mort.
36 Forsothe if his lord wiste, that the oxe was a puttere fro yistirdai and the thridde dai ago, and kepte not him, he schal yelde oxe for oxe, and he schal take the hool carkeys.
[Mais] s'il est connu que le bœuf avait auparavant accoutumé de heurter de sa corne, et que le maître ne l'ait point gardé, il restituera bœuf pour bœuf; mais le bœuf mort sera pour lui.
